Part 1: Thinking Through the Disciplines

Exploring academic disciplines.

Most college writing has some basic features in common: a sense of ethical responsibility and the use of credible and credited sources, critical thinking, and sound argumentation. In addition to these common features, each academic discipline, over many generations, has developed its own specific methods of asking questions and sharing answers. This chapter will show you how to use the lenses of various academic disciplines to develop your writing, reading, and thinking.

3.1 Exploring Academic Disciplines

Learning objectives.

The following table shows one version of the main academic disciplines and some of their branches.

Since the makeup of the different branches is always in flux and since the history of any institution of higher education is complicated, you will likely find some overlapping and varying arrangements of disciplines at your college.

Part of your transition into higher education involves being aware that each discipline is a distinct discourse community with specific vocabularies, styles, and modes of communication. Later in your college career, you will begin your writing apprenticeship in a specific discipline by studying the formats of published articles within it. You will look for the following formal aspects of articles within that discipline and plan to emulate them in your work:

Different disciplines tend to recommend collecting different types of evidence from research sources. For example, biologists are typically required to do laboratory research; art historians often use details from a mix of primary and secondary sources (works of art and art criticism, respectively); social scientists are likely to gather data from a variety of research study reports and direct ethnographic observation, interviews, and fieldwork; and a political scientist uses demographic data from government surveys and opinion polls along with direct quotations from political candidates and party platforms.

Consider the following circle of professors. They are all asking their students to conduct research in a variety of ways using a variety of sources.

write a essay discipline

What’s required to complete a basic, introductory essay might essentially be the same across all disciplines, but some types of assignments require discipline-specific organizational features. For example, in business disciplines, documents such as résumés, memos, and product descriptions require a specialized organization. Science and engineering students follow specific conventions as they write lab reports and keep notebooks that include their drawings and results of their experiments. Students in the social sciences and the humanities often use specialized formatting to develop research papers, literature reviews, and book reviews.

Part of your apprenticeship will involve understanding the conventions of a discipline’s key genres. If you are reading or writing texts in the social sciences, for example, you will notice a meticulous emphasis on the specifics of methodology (especially key concepts surrounding the collection of data, such as reliability, validity, sample size, and variables) and a careful presentation of results and their significance. Laboratory reports in the natural and applied sciences emphasize a careful statement of the hypothesis and prediction of the experiment. They also take special care to account for the role of the observer and the nature of the measurements used in the investigation to ensure that it is replicable. An essay in the humanities on a piece of literature might spend more time setting a theoretical foundation for its interpretation, it might also more readily draw from a variety of other disciplines, and it might present its “findings” more as questions than as answers. As you are taking a variety of introductory college courses, try to familiarize yourself with the jargon of each discipline you encounter, paying attention to its specialized vocabulary and terminology. It might even help you make a list of terms in your notes.

Scholars also tend to ask discipline-related kinds of questions. For example, the question of “renewable energy” might be a research topic within different disciplines. The following list shows the types of questions that would accommodate the different disciplines:

Key Takeaways

Think about your entire course load this semester as a collection of disciplines. For each course you are taking, answer the following questions, checking your textbooks and other course materials and consulting with your instructors, if necessary:

After you’ve asked and answered these questions about each discipline in isolation, consider what underlying things your courses have in common, even if they approach the world very differently on the surface.

Based on the example at the end of this section, pick a topic that multiple disciplines study. Formulate four questions about the topic, one from each of any four different disciplines. Ideally choose a topic that might come up in four courses you are currently taking or have recently taken, or choose a topic of particular interest to you. Here are just a few examples to get you started:

3.2 Seeing and Making Connections across Disciplines

Section 3.1 “Exploring Academic Disciplines” focused on the formal differences among various academic disciplines and their discourse communities. This section will explore the intellectual processes and concepts disciplines share in common. Even though you will eventually enter a discipline as an academic specialization (major) and as a career path (profession), the first couple of years of college may well be the best opportunity you will ever have to discover how disciplines are connected.

That process may be a re discovery, given that in the early grades (K–5), you were probably educated by one primary teacher each year covering a set of subjects in a single room. Even though you likely covered each subject in turn, that elementary school classroom was much more conducive to making connections across disciplines than your middle school or high school environment. If you’ve been educated in public schools during the recent era of rigid standardization and multiple-choice testing conducted in the name of “accountability,” the disciplines may seem more separate from one another in your mind than they actually are. In some ways, the first two years of your college experience are a chance to recapture the connections across disciplines you probably made naturally in preschool and the elementary grades, if only at a basic level at the time.

In truth, all disciplines are strikingly similar. Together, they are the primary reason for the survival and evolution of our species. As humans, we have designed disciplines, over time, to help us understand our world better. New knowledge about the world is typically produced when a practitioner builds on a previous body of work in the discipline, most often by advancing it only slightly but significantly. We use academic and professional disciplines to conduct persistent, often unresolved conversations with one another.

Most colleges insist on a “core curriculum” to make sure you have the chance to be exposed to each major discipline at least once before you specialize and concentrate on one in particular. The signature “Aha!” moments of your intellectual journey in college will come every time you grasp a concept or a process in one course that reminds you of something you learned in another course entirely. Ironically the more of those “Aha!” moments you have in the first two years of college, the better you’ll be at your specialization because you’ll have that much more perspective about how the world around you fits together.

How can you learn to make those “Aha!” moments happen on purpose? In each course you take, instead of focusing merely on memorizing content for the purposes of passing an exam or writing an essay that regurgitates your professor’s lecture notes, learn to look for the key questions and controversies that animate the discipline and energize the professions in it. If you organize your understanding of a discipline around such questions and controversies, the details will make more sense to you, and you will find them easier to master.

3.3 Articulating Multiple Sides of an Issue

Regardless of the discipline you choose to pursue, you will be arriving as an apprentice in the middle of an ongoing conversation. Disciplines have complicated histories you can’t be expected to master overnight. But learning to recognize the long-standing binary oppositions in individual disciplines can help you make sense of the specific issues, themes, topics, and controversies you will encounter as a student and as a professional. Here are some very broadly stated examples of those binary oppositions.

These binary oppositions move freely from one discipline to another, often becoming more complicated as they do so. Consider a couple of examples:

Of course, these two brief summaries vastly oversimplify the evolution of multiple disciplines over generations of intellectual history. Like the chart of binary oppositions, they’re meant merely to inspire you at this point to begin to note the connections between disciplines. Learning to think, write, and function in interdisciplinary ways requires practice that begins at the level of close reading and gradually expands into the way you interact with your surroundings as a college student and working professional.

For a model of how to read and think through the disciplines, let’s draw on a short but very famous piece of writing (available through the Avalon Project in the Note 2.5 “Gallery of Web-Based Texts” ), Abraham Lincoln’s “Address at the Dedication of the Gettysburg National Cemetery,” composed and delivered in November of 1863, several months after one of the bloodiest battles in the American Civil War.

write a essay discipline

Notice that each reader, regardless of academic background, needs a solid understanding of how rhetoric works (something we’ll cover in Chapter 4 “Joining the Conversation” in more detail). Each reader has been trained to use a specific disciplinary lens that causes certain passages to rise to prominence and certain insights to emerge.

But the real power of disciplines comes when these readers and their readings interact with each other. Imagine how a military historian could use social psychology to enrich an understanding of how a civilian population was motivated to support a war effort. Imagine how a political scientist could use military history to show how a peacetime, postwar governmental policy can trade on the outcome of a battle. Imagine how a social psychologist could use political science to uncover how a traumatized social structure can begin to heal itself through an embrace of shared governance.

As Lincoln would say, “It is altogether fitting and proper that we should do this.”

What is discipline? It is not just an act of obedience to rule, but it is a controlled attitude of various parameters, by not disturbing the social fabric of the society and also not spoiling the personal relationship of one another. When we say, discipline is a part of obedience to the civil rule and regulation, it is true to an extent and we consider it as a good conduct part of compliance. But contrary to our thoughts we can find that the same logic what was accepted as discipline can never be the yardstick of obedience in some other part of the world. When we keep discipline in the right frame, our actions will not hurt others.

Discipline doesn’t mean that you succumb to the unethical demand of your peers or superiors. You can become a successful person if you can lead a disciplined life. It is a balancing act of good and evil. For example, when you have enough money, instead of spending it impulsively, you can use it systematically in a much-disciplined manner. Discipline in school means going to school on time, following all the rules and regulations of the school, completing all the given tasks within the deadlines, etc. Many people do not like to be told what to do and they most definitely do not like to be told what to read. This fact is one of the reasons the school systems have such trouble educating some students. The thing is life is not here to give us all the things we want and if we do not have enough luck to be born extremely rich or extremely gifted our best solution is to have discipline at school. But this can be a problem, mostly because the things they teach us in school tend to be suited for one type of student and it happens to be the rarest one.

Discipline at school is not something that you have to do the conventional way, the thing is you can trick the system if you know how to approach the problem. You know what tasks you have and you can calculate how much time it can take you to do it then you just split that time into manageable segments. After you do the calculations you can spread the segments through the day so you do not even notice them and you will find that you can do much more then if you sat every day for a couple of hours in a row. The solution is simple as that and when you implement it in your daily life you will have discipline in school in no time just be patient and stick with the plan even if it has a lot of room for spontaneity.

Essay on Discipline – Types, Principles and Challenges (Essay 9 – 1000 Words )

Introduction:

Discipline is probably one of the most mentioned word you heard while growing up. It never gets old because discipline is required in all stages of life. Being disciplined sounds like a very heavy thing but it is simply the act of obeying the rules set for you as a guide for behaviour. Guides for behaviour are mostly used in schools and organizations. At home, being disciplined is basically following the right thing and displaying acceptable behaviour according to morals. Consequences of indiscipline at school and at home were severe such that children opted to be in their best behaviour. Teachers have a hard task in shaping the behaviour of children and they had to be “bad cops” every time in order to ensure discipline of students. In professional lives, discipline and code of conduct for employees is controlled by leaders and managers. It is really hectic when it comes to discipline in adults because the forms of punishment as consequences of indiscipline are hard to apply on people you respect especially those who are older than you. As a manager, it is important that discipline is maintained.

Types of Discipline:

There are three types of discipline based on behaviour modification. These types of discipline are aimed at correcting misbehavior. Misbehavior is any behaviour that is inappropriate according to the guidelines for behaviour that are set for a specific area.

The first type of discipline is preventive discipline. This type of discipline focuses on preventing certain type of behaviour from being displayed by the subjects. It actually diverts them from misbehaving and cause improvements in that area. It has been used in most schools to prevent absurd behaviour among students due to the restrictions put in place by the guide for behaviour.

The other type is supportive discipline. This type of discipline is aimed at supporting the virtues in an individual like self-control and it helps them get back on track easily. It is supportive through provision of positive feedback to the subjects, showing interest in the activities of the subjects and helping the subjects whenever they have difficulties so as to encourage good behaviour.

The third type of discipline is corrective discipline. This discipline is involved with the problem and deals with it directly. This type of discipline is known to be uncomfortable and intimidating and so people try to avoid sing it. Despite the discomfort and intimidating effects, it is a very effective type because the subject will have to go through the consequences of their misbehavior. It has been used to cease disruptive behaviour among students and its effectiveness has been realized.

Principles of Discipline Management:

Discipline is not just performed by anyone in whichever way they like, it should follow the principles of discipline in order for it to be effective. Discipline should search for a balance between finding disciplinary action and its long term effects. As a parent or a teacher, it is upon you to discipline your child but how you do it matters because the child may end up having feelings of hate towards you, which leads to more inappropriate behaviour. The reason why teachers tend to quit their jobs within the first years of practice is the lack of finding a balance while controlling behaviour of a child.

Another principle is the use of affective approach in discipline. According to the theories by Freud Sigmoid and Carl Rodgers, behaviour, implications of how adults discipline children were felt differently and that is why an effective approach is preferred.

Behavioral approach to discipline is a principle that is vital in controlling behaviour. According to a behaviorist theory by Skinner, there is classical conditioning and operant conditioning, both aimed at controlling behaviour. Through positive and negative reinforcements, behaviour can be corrected and that makes the disciplining act successful.

Cognitive approach to discipline was developed due to the cognitive developmental theories. Controlling behaviour is highly dependent on the cognition because thought processes influence behaviour. Using the psychological approach to change someone’s thinking will result in change of behaviour. This approach works for all ages because cognitive development is for all stages of life.

Challenges Facing Discipline Management:

Management of discipline is affected by factors which challenge the process. One factor is the lack of effective communication. When the guide for behaviour has not clearly been communicated to the subjects, incidences of misbehavior may be noted. It would be inappropriate to discipline the subject because they had no idea it was a wrong thing to do. In order for discipline to be effective, clear communication of the required behaviour should be communicated.

Lack of respect to authority. As time goes by, we realize that respect diminishes especially in schools. In the olden times, teachers received utmost respect from the students, some were even feared. Nowadays, respect has deteriorated and most of the teachers are young. Discipline management in situations where leaders are not respected is sort of impossible.

Economic difficulties also contribute to ineffective discipline managements. Due to increase in population, management of discipline is hard because misbehavior incidences increase due to poverty and discipline management is compromised through these economic hardships. There are also less resources to use in discipline management.

Disruptive behavior of the leader causes ineffective discipline management. Disruptive behaviour of leaders is in the form of lack of interest in the activities of the subjects and the lack of commitment in improving the behaviour of their subjects. Leadership and management roles involve disciplining but that cannot be possible in situations where the leaders and managers lack interest in their subordinates. Leaders and managers should always take part in improving the behaviors and personalities of their subjects so that working with them become easier.

To conclude, discipline is actually the art of shaping behaviour. The management of discipline requires specific regulations through principles to enhance its effectiveness. The challenges facing discipline management are situational and can be avoided. As a leader or a manager, the role of discipline should be under your control at all times in order to gain respect from your subordinates.

What concepts should I cover in writing an essay on discipline?

Consider developing a structure for your discipline essay before you start writing. The format should have an introduction, main body, and conclusion that comprehensively address all crucial aspects of the subject.

All pertinent information that a reader needs to be aware of should be covered in the points you utilize to describe the issue. This includes a succinct explanation of discipline, its function in achieving goals, the significance of discipline in daily life, and the benefits of leading a disciplined lifestyle.

What guidelines ought to guide me when I write the introduction of my discipline essay?

An essay’s introduction is a critical section of the paper. The opening of your discipline essay should be able to achieve the following goals:

Setting the tone for the entire discipline essay begins with the first sentence of your introduction.

Here is a simple illustration to begin your essay with:

For thousands of years, the disciplines of psychology and philosophy have debated the art and skill of discipline. According to ancient Greek philosophers, discipline is a “sophrosyne,” an ideal of mental clarity and sterling character that fosters restraint, equilibrium, and moderation.

Additionally, your introduction should be able to establish a backdrop that is historical, geographical, and social (when required). An outline of your argument is essential when presenting one since it provides the reader with context.

What should the body of my discipline essay look like?

Paragraphs that structure your ideas and themes should be included in the body of your discipline essay. The body paragraphs of your essay are crucial for supporting your thesis (which is presented in the introduction).

Each paragraph in the essay should make sense in relation to the one before it and the one following it. The subject or idea of a single paragraph should also be the only focus.

At this stage, it’s crucial to remember that readers take mental rests at the end of paragraphs and only take in information in little bursts. It is best to avoid using long paragraphs in your discipline essay.

The main body of your discipline essay gives you the chance to elaborate on the points you made in the introduction. To make an impression on the reader, use brief, succinct sentences that are backed up with evidence from reliable sources, such as quotations, statistics, and facts.

Never leave a paragraph unfinished while giving proof. Your primary task as an essay writer is to connect your work and your evidence on discipline to the paragraph’s main themes. This can be done by analyzing, elaborating, and adding to the body’s description of the evidence.

How should my essay on discipline be concluded?

The final paragraph you need to write for your discipline essay is the conclusion. An effective conclusion will:

The greatest spot to summarize your important points and remind the reader of your arguments is in the essay’s conclusion. Don’t just summarize each paragraph and reiterate each point made in the discipline essay’s body.

The conclusion should tie together all of your arguments regarding discipline in a way that amply demonstrates how the various ideas are related.

Include a larger perspective of the subject and the implications of your argument in your conclusion. The summary should be able to:

You might even think about concluding your discipline essay with a declarative statement or a quotation.

Long and Brief Discipline Essay

Essay on discipline 1 (100 words).

Most of us don’t like discipline and especially don’t like the word. We don’t want the word “discipline” mentioned in our classrooms, homes, workplaces, or even institutions. That is so because we value freedom over adherence to any laws or regulations.

But we must realize that some discipline is necessary for our own wellbeing. Without any self-control in our actions or conduct, we will be completely aimless wayward missiles with a ton of ammo but no idea where to aim.

In other words, we all have the capacity to achieve success and do well in life, but without discipline, we are unable to find a way to get there, ultimately failing.

Essay on Discipline 2 (150 words)

Most kids think of discipline as a collection of rules that their adults have forced on them. Many kids believe that punishment is unnecessary and that they should be allowed to do anything they want.

The reason for this is that the kids don’t understand why the elders made those regulations in the first place. Elders and guardians always have the best interests of kids in mind, thus a lot of the rules and restrictions they place are just for the kids’ security and well-being.

There are also some straightforward exercises in a discipline that you can perform on a regular basis. You’ve probably heard the proverb, “Early to bed and early to wake, make a man healthy and wise,” for instance.

Your health and personality will undoubtedly benefit if you are disciplined about going to bed early and rising early the next day.

Similar to this, if you follow some simple rules every day with discipline, such as washing your hands before eating, refraining from talking while you eat, and always acting appropriately, they will improve your life.

Essay on Discipline 3 (200 Words)

I am aware that you are already disciplined, especially if you are a student. How frequently did your teacher tell you to pay attention or you would have to leave the class?

Or how frequently did your parents forbid you from playing outside or going on adventures because you didn’t do well on your test?

These are a few discipline-related examples that were allegedly introduced to foster your growth. The discipline enforced in this situation is necessary, and you must create a habit of adhering to it.

Your teachers, parents, or other adults have disciplined you, but there is no damage in it because their main concern is your welfare and improvement.

As long as the goal for which discipline is being used is good, discipline is good. Such discipline transforms you for the better and alters how others see you. It brings you admiration from teachers, friends, and family.

You will be admired and respected and set an example for juniors and younger people to follow. You’ll have greater composure, serenity, and career and personal success. Discipline is essential in many aspects of life, including school, work, and personal relationships.

Essay on Discipline 4 (250 Words)

According to the definition, discipline is “the technique of teaching people to respect rules or a code of behavior, using punishment to correct disobedience.”

The explanation makes it clear that the major goal of discipline is to teach people how to immediately respect established rules and regulations.

There is also a clause for punishment or consequence, which is intended to ensure that the rules are followed and the discipline is upheld.

A person imposes discipline on themselves or others, frequently for justifications and to achieve desired outcomes. It’s likely that your decision to self-study for 4-5 hours every day at home, regardless of the circumstances, will boost your grades and give you a steady career. As an example.

For instance, if a police officer pulls someone over for driving carelessly or without a helmet, it is merely to protect that person’s safety and the welfare of society as a whole.

However, care must be taken when establishing rules and regulations, and any inconvenience brought on by the rules’ observance must also be taken into account.

For instance, it would be an overreaching of authority if the policeman in the scenario above jailed the offender in addition to fining him for a very small infraction.

Similar to the last example, disciplinary action cannot be justified if your school management dismisses you for a week for failing to turn in an assignment.

Essay about Discipline 5 (300 Words)

Introduction

Discipline, in the general sense, is a strategy to keep yourself and your actions in check; frequently, it also refers to meeting all of your obligations and deadlines on time.

Although discipline is beneficial for growth and advancement, when it is imposed by another person, it may also cause issues. I shall discuss both excellent and terrible discipline in this post.

Good Discipline

To achieve desired objectives, good discipline is applied for all the right reasons. For instance, your teacher’s stringent request that you remain silent throughout the lecture is meant to force you to focus on it so that you can raise your grade.

When your father wants you to leave early at any cost, it is simply for your protection and advantage and is another illustration of effective discipline.

Similar to this, there might be countless instances of discipline that is used to improve things.

Bad Discipline

Bad discipline refers to any disciplinary measure that has been implemented without a justification or with malicious intent.

Even good discipline can be classed as bad discipline if it is applied too firmly and causes someone stress and emotional distress.

Let’s say, for example, that your friend’s parents are so overly concerned for him or her that they won’t let them attend your birthday party or any other comparable event.

The punishment in this instance appears to have been applied without an obvious cause, and your acquaintance may find it to be somewhat gloomy.

Absolutely! Individuals who are disciplined are also mentally and physically focused. They are, therefore, able to align their body & mind with their ideas & goals to make excellent decisions

This depends on what you are attempting to accomplish with your essay. For example, a conversational tone for a discipline essay can be a great way to initiate discussion on the concept amongst your readers.

Discipline is only effective to a certain extent when the person enforcing it is thinking about the subject’s welfare. Any discipline also needs to be approached objectively and logically, and any undesirable results must be avoided.

Discipline Essay Sample

Discipline is the key to success. It is what separates those who are successful from those who are not.

Discipline unifies an individual’s life and allows them to accomplish their goals more easily than without it. Discipline helps individuals maintain self-control, which in turn leads to better organizational skills and increased productivity. This essay explores how discipline affects one’s life, both positively and negatively.

Essay Example on Discipline

Thesis Statement of Discipline Essay Discipline is very crucial for running life smoothly but at the same time, there must be a level for it. If a person is subjected to excessive discipline then he starts feeling like in the manacles. Introduction of Discipline Essay Discipline is the quality of behaving or thinking in a controlled way, especially when this involves minding one’s behavior. Discipline is self-imposed control to do something for a specific purpose. Discipline is that part of life that identifies and distinguishes us from other living beings. The human mind is considered the most advanced form of development and that is why we include ourselves in the category of rational beings. But this rationality sometimes becomes a burden on many people when they get exhausted with the high pressure of discipline. Here in this essay, we will focus on the benefits and negative consequences of it by doing the research and pondering over the issue. Main Body of Discipline Essay Why Discipline is Important to live for Human Beings? If a person is doing his work in appropriate discipline then he can achieve the best in his life in major cases. On the contrary, nothing of such sort happens with the students and people who are indisciplined in their lives. Finishing your goals, giving respect to the people, courteous behavior all are part of the discipline. Some narrow definition of it also includes following customs and traditions in the discipline. In order to achieve a goal, individuals must have the dedication and commitment to complete their tasks. In doing so, they require self-discipline. This type of discipline is often necessary for people who need to complete a long-term project or an important assignment that requires many hours of work. Discipline can be found in every aspect of our lives – from teachers disciplining children in school, parents disciplining their children at home, athletes disciplining themselves on the field/court/rink by taking care of their physical health and fitness through diet and exercise, laborers performing physically demanding tasks with the little complaint because they know it’s only temporary. Our society is filled with examples of discipline as it is displayed everywhere we go on a daily basis. In fact, discipline is often considered an important aspect of leading a fulfilling life. How to develop self-discipline? The first step to developing discipline is to recognize that nothing happens magically. It takes time and willpower to make a change. Discipline isn’t something we’re born with – it’s something we learn over time and through trial and error. Either we want what’s best for our future or we don’t, but the one thing that remains consistent is self-discipline. Developing self-discipline requires motivation, willpower, and commitment; all skills which can be learned by anyone who is willing to put in the effort. Get Non-Plagiarized Custom Essay on Discipline in USA Order Now Why parents should be more disciplined with their children? Parents should not only punish their children for misbehavior but also let them know why they are being punished. Discipline is an essential part of parenting. It begins by having boundaries and expectations for your child(ren). Children need to learn discipline as it helps them make good choices, stick to the rules, and respect authority/others. As a parent, it is important to be both a role model and a mentor for your child(ren), which means enforcing the rules you create for them at home throughout their life from toddlerhood all through adolescence, college-age years into young adulthood. Being disciplined as a parent will teach them that they must first learn self-discipline before they can expect others to do what’s right – including their teacher(s) in school and future employers when they’re older. Discipline in the workplace – how does it affect productivity and performance? Discipline at work creates a better organizational structure and an easier path to reaching team goals. An employee that is disciplined can be trusted to do their job well. It shows that they have the self-control needed to get important tasks completed, while also being respectful to others in the workplace by following rules/policies. Employees who are disciplined are responsible for their actions because they take pride in their work performance and know it will reflect them as a person. Their dedication to doing what is right helps build stronger relationships with co-workers which leads to increased productivity within an office setting. Buy Customized Essay on Discipline At Cheapest Price Order Now How Excessive Discipline is a cause of snatching the right to Freedom? When a person is subjected to follow an excessive level of discipline he starts getting a feel of suffocation. You might not be interested in taking up a job as your father or elders did in their life but traditional discipline can make you do that. You may be asked to remain silent and courteous in front of your elders to suppress your dreams and self-respect. At this stage, discipline becomes more like that of a grip for hanging you. Discipline is an important part of raising children to become responsible adults, but it shouldn’t be used as a way to control or manipulate them. When this happens, it can lead to resentment and anger which causes parents and their children not to trust each other. It’s also extremely difficult for the child(ren) involved to form healthy relationships with others later on in life because they were never taught how – including friends, classmates, teachers, etc. A child that was forced into the discipline at a young age will grow up thinking everything must be done by force instead of being taught right from wrong through positive examples. Conclusion The conclusion that could be drawn from the above essay example is that we should be balanced in the following of discipline. The need for our actual behavior is also crucial to keep our identity alive. After all, we are human beings who are rational and cannot lose out on identity at any cost. Parents need to give their kids firm boundaries and guidelines, but they also must show them love so that they aren’t afraid of making mistakes. When children know they are loved unconditionally by their parents, it gives them the power to face challenges with more courage and confidence – which is what makes self-discipline such an important life skill. As a parent, you can make discipline less intimidating by focusing on training your child(ren) rather than punishing them – then their focus will be on doing what’s necessary for success at school or work instead of getting into trouble because all they’re thinking about is making you mad and how quickly they can avoid it again next time. Your job as a parent isn’t easy; however, finding ways to communicate with your child(ren) while still enforcing discipline in a positive manner will allow them to grow up knowing how to be their best self.
