In a short essay question you have to discuss different possible answers to a question, make an overall judgement, and explain why this is. These questions are worth 9 marks .
This can involve identifying the most important factor or deciding how successful something has been.
You get marks for the points below:
TIP 1: Use iFACE to plan your answer TIP 2: Remember to explain your factors
* Write an introduction to your essay (describe a background fact or state the factors to be discussed)
* F actor Discuss the F actor named in the question , explaining why it is important (2/3 facts required).
* A lternative Discuss A lternative factors by saying “However…” and then outline another point of view/factor. Give 2/3 facts about these.
* C onclusion C learly answer the question: What was the main factor? or Was it successful?
* E vidence Give one piece of E vidence to support your conclusion

S4 National 5 – Prose Essay Questions
Look through the following and think which ones would be ideal for ‘Flowers for Algernon’. Then think about how you would answer the question and make a paragraph plan.
Answers to questions in this section should refer to the text and to such relevant features as: characterisation, setting, language, key incident (s), climax, turning point, plot, structure, narrative technique, theme, ideas, description…
Each question has the same two part structure:
- The opening line gives the central idea of the essay-

2. The second line clarifies the line of thought that should be developed-
Briefly describe what happens at this point and go on to explain why this is crucial to the fate of a main character.

- Choose a novel or a short story in which setting in place and/or time is an important feature.
Briefly describe the setting(s) and explain the importance of this feature to the story.
- Choose a novel or a short story or a non-fiction text or group of texts which deals with an important human issue (such as the abuse of power, conflict between good and evil, loss of freedom or hatred between individuals or groups).
Show how the author reveals the issue through the portrayal of people and events throughout the text, and show how your understanding of the issue has deepened.

- Choose a novel or a short story in which you feel there is an incident of great importance to the story as a whole.
Describe the incident and go on to show its importance to the development of the characters and the central concerns of the text.
- Choose a novel or a short story which has a character who affects you emotionally.
Describe how you feel about the character, and show how the writer leads you to feel this way.
- Choose a prose work (fiction or non-fiction) in which the writer uses a memorable style/voice/narrative technique.
Explain in detail how features of the writing style/voice/narrative technique contribute to the effectiveness of the text.

4. Choose a novel or a short story which gives you an insight into an aspect of human nature or behaviour.
State what the aspect is, and show how the characters’ actions and relationships lead you to a deeper understanding of human nature or behaviour.
- Choose a novel or a short story with an ending which you find satisfactory.
By looking at the novel or short story as a whole, explain why you find the ending satisfactory in bringing to a conclusion the main concerns of the text.
- Choose a prose work (fiction or non-fiction) in which the setting is an important feature.
Explain how the writer creates the setting, and then go on to show how this feature contributes to your understanding of the text as a whole.
2009 Exam Paper
- Choose a novel or a short story in which a character is in conflict with his or her friends or relatives or society.
Show how the conflict arises and what effect it has on the character’s fate in the novel or short story as a whole.
- Choose a novel or a short story which deals with the effects of evil or war or deceit or a breakdown in society or a breakdown in relationship(s).
Show how nay of these negative pressures affects the main character in the novel or short story and go on to show whether or not she or he tackles it successfully.
- Choose a non-fiction text or group of texts which interests you because of its detailed and vivid description of scenes, events, people.
Show how the detailed description makes the scenes, events, people vivid for you and increases your understanding of what is happening.
2008 Exam Paper
- Choose a novel or a short story which has a turning point or moment of realisation for at least one of the characters.
Briefly describe what has led up to the turning point or moment. Go on to show what impact this has on the character(s) and how it affects the outcome of the novel or story.
- Choose a novel or a short story in which you feel sympathy with one of the main characters because of the difficulties or injustice or hardships she or he has to face.
Describe the problems the character faces and show by what means you are made to feel sympathy for her or him.
- Choose a non-fiction text or group of texts which uses setting, or humour, or description to make clear to you an interesting aspect of society.
Show how the use of any of these techniques helped you to understand the writer’s point of view on the interesting aspect of society.
2007 Exam Paper
- Choose a novel or a short story in which two of the main characters have a disagreement which is important to the outcome of the novel or short story.
Identify the reasons for the disagreement and go on to show how the effects of the disagreement have an impact on the rest of the novel or short story.
- Choose a prose text (fiction or non-fiction) in which a society or a person or a culture or a setting is effectively portrayed.
Show how the writer’s presentation of the subject makes an impact on you, and helps you to understand the subject in greater depth.
- Choose a novel or a short story which has a striking opening.
Show how the opening is effective in introducing the character(s) and/or the atmosphere and/or the setting.
2006 Exam Paper
- Choose a novel or a short story which deals with an important human issue: for example, poverty, war, family conflict, injustice, or any other issue you regard as important.
State what the issue is and show how the characters cope with the issue in the course of the novel or short story.
- Choose a novel or short story in which the main character makes an important decision.
Explain why the decision is necessary and go on to show how the decision affects the rest of the novel or short story.
- Choose a non-fiction text or group of texts which presents you with an interesting place or topic.
Briefly identify the place or topic and go on to show how the writer’s presentation mad this interesting to you.
2005 Exam Paper
- 4. Choose a novel or a short story in which a character changes in the course of the story.
What factors seem to cause the development? What effect does this have on the character and on the outcome of the story?
- 5. Choose a prose work or a group of prose works (fiction or non-fiction) which deals with a topic of interest to you.
Explain how your interest was aroused and how the treatment of the theme or topic contributed to your enjoyment of the work.
- 6. Choose a novel or a short story in which you feel there is an incident of great importance.
Briefly describe the incident and go on to highlight its importance in the story as a whole.
2004 Exam Paper
- Choose a novel or short story which deals with family life.
Show how the relationships within the family affect the events and outcome of the story.
- Choose a novel or a short story which as an unexpected ending.
By looking at the story as a whole explain why the ending is surprising, and explain whether you found it satisfactory or not.
- Choose a prose work or group of prose works (fiction or non-fiction) dealing to some extent with a less pleasant side of life.
Show how this less pleasant side of life is portrayed and made more real for you by the description of the people and/or places and/or events.
2003 Exam Paper
- Choose a novel or a short story where one of the main characters is female.
Show how the character’s contribution to the content and outcome is important in the story as a whole.
- Choose one or more than one work of fiction or non-fiction which deals with a serious aspect of life.
State what the issue is and go on to show how, through the plot and characters, the play increased your understanding of this issue.
- Choose a novel or a short story which has an incident or moment of great tension.
Describe briefly what happens at this point in the story and go on to show how it is important for the outcome of the story as a whole.
