Despite what its name might suggest, the satirical website "Stuff White People Like" is an insightful commentary on the values and tastes of liberal members of the American "professional-managerial class." Besides calling attention to the "racing" of class, the site presents a portrait of these people that allows us to read the way structurally inherent anxieties around class reproduction and a historically conditioned quest for authenticity and individuality are sedimented in their everyday behavior and consciousness. The popularity of the site in 2008 reflected public interest in the intersection of race, class, and culture in the context of Barak Obama's presidential campaign.

At the core of this dissertation is a critical examination of the disjuncture between the policy and practice of sport for development. Drawing on a vertical case study of gender, sport, and education in the Pacific Island nation of Sāmoa, the study illuminates how a healthy islands through sport (HITS) policy world centered around using sport to create healthier bodies for a thriving nation is discursively created in inter/national policy but effectively separate and detached from the gendered logics guiding already existing translocal practices of sport for development. This practice, as described to me by my interlocutors, observed through twelve months of ethnographic fieldwork, and quantitatively surveyed, includes ideas about development centered around the translocal ʻāiga (family) rather than the territorial boundaries of the nation, tautua (service) rather than health behavior change, and alofa (love) rather than one’s body size. Locally imagined sport for development also intricately ties together notions of transnational mobility and globalization with shifting practices of masculinity and muscularity, raises important questions about the purpose and kind of education needed for development, and highlights a local field of action that ironically coexists with a prescribed policy world focused on using sport to recalibrate unruly bodies into virtuous bio-citizens. Contrasting etic and emic constructions of sport in development, this dissertation makes two arguments. First, it highlights how many Samoans view sport as a roundtrip ticket off island toward economic opportunity and the imagined good life. In this case, it is not necessarily the quest to produce a healthy body that attracts Samoan youth, especially men, to sport but rather its potential to move bodies into more central locations within a global economy of remittances that makes sport popular. Second, this study demonstrates how inter/national development policy does not drive local practice. Instead, development actors sustain policy through a strategic process of social interpretation and translation that serves to align practice with policy at the surface while concealing deeper disjunctures of practice below. By juxtaposing what sport for development policy in Sāmoa is intended to achieve with how it is actually practiced, imagined, and socially managed, this dissertation foregrounds a dialectic of development imaginations that multiply shape the ways “playing for the future” has been incorporated into the development imaginations of Samoan youth, educators, community leaders, and government officials.

This presentation is a contribution to the debate on the place of humanities at the university. Basically, it demonstrates that no university education is possible without the integration of humanities in the current curricula.

IELTS Opinion essays (Essay on Education)
Updated On Dec 01, 2021

- 1.1 Introduction
- 1.2.1 Opinion- In favour
- 1.2.2 Opinion- Shortcomings:
- 1.3 Conclusion
- 2 Here are some topics for opinion essay about Education :
Most of the students are scared of ‘Writing task 2’ of the IELTS exam . The test-takers will be given only 40 minutes to complete the 250-word essay. The essays will be opinion-based. In this section, the examiners will assess the fluency and task response.
Structure of IELTS essay
Since there are plenty of topics in IELTS writing task 2 , it is difficult to predict which topic will appear in the actual IELTS test. You should be a Jack of all trades ( have some knowledge on every topic). If it is an opinion essay then you can follow this structure to write your answer.
Introduction
The introduction part will be the most important part of the essay, as this paragraph will help you write the rest of the essay. The introduction part should include the topic or the question given in the essay. You can use synonyms and frame sentences. While writing the essay you should decide whether you are for or against the topic. This will make it easy for the examiner to judge your stand. Once you complete paraphrasing the question, give your opinion regarding the topic. Also for opinion essays , you need to include a thesis statement. The thesis statement should indicate what will be discussed in the forthcoming paragraphs.
Body of the essay
The body of the essay is where you explain your opinion in-depth. You have to keep in mind that you do not divert from the topic. There will be two parts of your body paragraph. The first one is important as it involves your opinion about the topic. And the second one will be your opposition to the topic. They are explained in detail below:
Opinion- In favour
In favourable opinion you can use phrases like ‘in my opinion’ or ‘I believe that’ before starting the question so that the examiner knows that you are talking in favour of the topic. The tone used while explaining maybe in the third person. This is usually used while trying to give an example contextual to the topic. While writing the IELTS essay on education, if you think positively about the education you can give interesting ideas in favour of education. If you are not aware of the facts you can highlight the main features of the education.
Opinion- Shortcomings:
We know that education is undoubtedly important but you should explain the shortcomings also. This is to show that, you understand both the sides of the topic given. Eg: You can also give your suggestions to improve the education system.
In the end, you can close the essay by giving some small notes with reasons. The opinion given by you must be consistent throughout the essay and make sure you do not have two opinions about the question given. You can also sum up the introduction part as well as the body paragraph part of the essay and conclude the overall essay on a positive note. Look at some of the examples we have on the education essay IELTS.

IELTS Writing Task 2: Education (Opinion Essay)
Some education systems make students focus on certain subjects at the age of 15, while others require students to study a wide range of subjects until they leave school.
What are the benefits of each system?
Which is better?
Sample Answer:
Many students are made to attend certain classes when they are 15 years of age, while others are required to learn various subjects before leaving school. Although an education system with a broad range of subjects can provide diverse knowledge, that with a narrower range is better as learners have more time for other activities desired.
Those supporting the former education system may claim that students can access a wider range of knowledge that they may need in their later life. Having a chance to attend many classes, students are taught numerous lessons related to various fields, many of which can be of great help when they grow up. For instance, in Vietnam, students aiming at engineering courses in university are only required to have good grades in Maths and Physics. However, the knowledge they have acquired in non-major classes like English or Computer Science can offer them a competitive edge when they apply for a job in a multinational company, compared to those who are not familiar with foreign languages or computers.
On the other hand, students who study only a few subjects have more time for other purposes than those studying so many. With fewer subjects to learn, they have extra time either for stress relievers such as playing some sport or taking a rest or for further research related to their chosen subjects. The former activity helps students relieve pressure at school and recharge their energy, whereas the latter is a good way of reviewing the lesson taught in class. Scientifically, these activities increase their study efficiency and academic performance, so such an education system is much better than that forcing students to learn various subjects.
In conclusion, although the knowledge learnt in various classes is potentially helpful, I believe that a study program with not so many classes is more beneficial to students who can have more time for deeper study or relaxation.

However, do not skip the issues you have never thought of. When choosing a topic, consider not what you consider easy to write about, but what will be interesting to read about. Choosing an “easy” topic may turn out to be a wrong track as you may have difficulties finding credible sources to support your views.

Education is the greatest innovation of mankind that had been transformed our lives and the behaviour in a preferred way. It is my belief that education is the development of assisting in one’s learning and stated as the act of developing the brainpower, critical thinking capabilities, social and cultural understanding which brands us to be a true humans. According to (Parankimalil, 2012) John Dewey stated that “Education is the process of living through a continuous reconstruction of experiences”. Education is an endless and ultimate process. As education begins with mother’s womb and finishes in the tomb indicates that to every human being education is important and valuable.
I strongly agrees that as a teacher, the main purpose of education is to train students through reconstruction of experiences along with socializing them in the norms and values of society and highlighting the values of a democratic society such as honesty, corporation, competitiveness and moral responsibility. The purpose of education consist of the invention of knowledge and knowledgeable students by nurturing the curiosity, enthusiasm and rationality within students. In my viewpoint, the main role of the school is to prepare individuals to live as members of the society with the skills that are essential to each of the learner for living morally, creatively and effectively in a democratic society within civic development, emotional and cognitive development. The popular author, the American philosopher Mortimer Jerome Adler suggested that the development of citizenship, self-improvement and occupational preparation are the three objectives of children’s schooling. (Wesleyan University, 2019).

In regard with education, to my belief that the system should have a procedure that follows. I strongly believe that the primary people of the educational system are the learners and teachers. A learner is someone who is learning about a specific subject or learning how to do something. Basically it is acquiring something generally in the context of acquiring a skill through experiences. A teacher is somebody who delivers to the learner about the importance of their life and living. I believe that teaching is training and guidance associated with ideas that gain from teachers through interaction. I strongly believe that a teacher can transform students by applying various different strategies that can change their lives. My personal philosophy of education is, I believe that every child is special and unique in their own way who desires a loving, safe and inspiring atmosphere by which they can learn through real life experience, hands on activities, where they can grow and mature through emotionally, physically, socially, mentally and rationally. My decision to pursue a profession in teaching is to develop students’ capability by believing in them as they are capable of creating something and assisting them to discover who they are. As a teacher it is my responsibility to guide students to reach their fullest potential. I believe that the class environment should be a safe place that motivates the child’s learning. I will help students to grow a deep affection and respect within the students and environment.
Personal communication with my students is one of the most important aspects of my teaching. My role as a teacher is to provide children the main gears that cultivate students learning of knowledge. It is my responsibility to diagnose and set the targets based on students’ needs, their abilities along with their learning styles. As a teacher, my role is to guide students by providing relevant information where students can learn by themselves. I provide the opportunities to discover by themselves and practice different skills. I Let students to do hands-on activities and provide them adequate time and space to apply materials and formulate them to do different experiments and allowing them to construct knowledge. To accomplish these goals, I teach according to the needs of every child so the students will have trust in them to achieve their goals. I strive to continue a classroom atmosphere that is conducive to learning. Students frequently work in groups or with a pair in order to emphasis on communicative rather than a teacher-centered approach, I use the audiovisual equipment as well as the other electronic resources. I know to be flexible and to adjust my teaching whenever necessary. A conducive learning atmosphere has to be one of mutual respect. In line with this I present the curriculum that contains the curiosity of the children makes them learning in essential to life. I make students to learn through various experiences and reconstruct new ideas. I integrate the curriculum with themes, integrated units, project-based works, group work, individual work, pair work and providing active learning through hands-on activities. I believe that to teach students, a curriculum is the key element in education. It is the reflection of education. A curriculum is the total learning experiences of the individual. The concept is dynamic as the changes occur in society. I strongly agrees that the main purpose of the curriculum is to advance educational assistance and activities and practices that it helps to improve students’ engagement in learning when accomplishing their goals. My personal philosophy of education believes that certain goals should be incorporated in the curriculum. A curriculum should be based on basic needs, social aspects, cultural factors, individual talents, intellectual, moral, religious and tradition. The main aim of the curriculum should be to deliver information and develop the elementary skills, attitudes, values essential to personal development which are essential for living in and contributing to a developing and changing society.

What is an opinion essay?
An opinion essay is where a writer shares a clearly formed opinion backed by research, logic, and anecdotal evidence. The purpose of an opinion essay is to clearly articulate a position, often in response to a question. It’s a writer’s way of demonstrating both what they think and why they think it.
Being able to express an opinion well is an important skill to have in the world. For example, being on social media exposes you to a wide array of opinions, so it’s good to be able to recognize which opinions are backed up with substantial evidence and which ones aren’t.
You will also find opinion essays in the Op-Ed sections of newspapers. The most famous op-eds, like those printed in the New York Times , are read by millions of readers and can have a serious impact on the way that people think.
How is an opinion essay different from other essays?
Opinion essays are only one type of essay that you might be assigned. Different essay types have different goals. Opinion essays are great for sharing an opinion, while persuasive essays are useful for convincing the reader that an opinion is correct. Argumentative essays also demonstrate why something is correct, but they do not rely on emotions as much as persuasive essays do. Expository essays explain the reasons why something is a certain way without taking a side.
Opinion essay: States an opinion and backs it up with facts
Argumentative essay: States a fact and backs it up with more facts
Persuasive essay: States a fact or opinion and tries to convince the reader to agree using facts and emotions
Expository essay: Explains a subject by laying out all of the evidence connected to it
How to structure an opinion essay
If this is your first time writing an opinion essay, a good way to start is by using the five-paragraph essay structure .
Paragraph 1: Introduction
Capture your reader’s attention with a good hook. Present the prompt and state your opinion.
Some tips for a good opinion essay hook:
- Use a surprising statistic.
- Profess an unpopular opinion.
- Ask a rhetorical question.
- Share an anecdote .
Paragraphs 2, 3, and 4: Body
Use facts and anecdotes to explain why you hold your opinion. Make sure you use credible sources! It’s not enough to just say what you think; you should also explain what evidence led you to that opinion.
You can also use these paragraphs to work through any counterarguments or alternative points of view that you might encounter. Addressing those in the body of your essay will strengthen your argument and help you clarify why you believe something to be true.
Paragraph 5: Conclusion
Draw a logical arrow through the body paragraphs and point it at your opinion. The conclusion is a place to remind the reader of your evidence and make your point.
What to include in an opinion essay
A clear opinion (thesis): Your opinion is your thesis. Forming your opinion might happen quickly in response to the prompt, or it might be something that you’ve been mulling over for a long time. Either way, your opinion should be clear from the start of the essay.
Novelty: A good opinion essay adds something to the discourse. Maybe your opinion doesn’t align with the mainstream. Or, if your opinion is generally agreed upon, you could find some interesting new research that supports it.
Semiformal tone: It’s easy to drift into a casual, conversational tone in opinion essays because you’re writing about a personal topic. Keeping a measured, semiformal tone that’s not too stiff or too casual will lend more credibility to your opinion.
What not to include in an opinion essay
“I think”: It’s true that technically an opinion essay is all about what you think. It’s OK to use this phrase to begin, but your essay will fall flat if you rely only on “I think” statements without providing external evidence for how or why you think those things.
Ambiguity: By the time you sit down to outline and write your essay, you should have a clear understanding of what you think and why you think it. It’s fine for your opinion to stretch over the course of your essay, but if you aren’t clear about your opinion at the beginning of the essay, you can’t expect your reader to have a clear understanding of your ideas after reading it.
Rambling: Stick to the subject. Again, because the material begins in your own head, it’s easy to get off track following your own wandering thoughts. If you need to, allow yourself to go off on those tangents, but just remember to go back and cut out any material that isn’t relevant to your thesis before you turn the essay in.
Write an opinion essay in 6 steps
1 brainstorm .
If you don’t have a prompt, this is where you will start brainstorming all of the topics you might want to write about. If you do have a prompt, then brainstorm all of the possible answers to it.
2 Research
In this step you’ll form your opinion. As you form it, continue to ask yourself why. Why do you believe something to be true? Do you have data to support it? Have you heard similar stories from multiple sources? If something sounds true to you, but you’re not sure why, continue to investigate it using primary and secondary sources. If it’s a valid opinion, you will find the support somewhere.
This is also a time to research any counterarguments or alternative perspectives. Including these in your essay shows you have done your research thoroughly. However, make sure you are presenting them in a way that still supports your point.
Create an outline according to the five-paragraph essay structure mentioned above. Adjust the paragraph count according to the assignment you’re given and how much room you need to explain or support your opinion.
4 Drafting
It’s finally time to write! Start with a rough draft and remember that it’s called rough for a reason. Write it all down. You’ll have time to clean it up and make it sound nice when you’re revising. If you don’t write anything down, you won’t have anything to revise. For opinion essays, include any quotes or research you’ve gathered and cite your sources.
Now is the time to revise , or clean it up. Make sure your essay flows logically; jumping from one topic to the next will disorient the reader. Check that all of your evidence supports your opinion. Listen to the way your essay sounds (literally, read it out loud to yourself). And triple-check that your opinion is crystal clear!
6 Proofread
The proofreading stage is where you get granular. Make sure your words are spelled correctly and that your commas and periods are in their places. If you aren’t confident in your proofreading skills, you can use Grammarly to review the essay with you.
Opinion essay outline (example)
If you’re not sure what an opinion essay should look like, here is an example of an opinion essay outline using the five-paragraph essay structure.
Prompt: Should students be required to do homework?
Introduction
Hook reader with a statistic about how much time the average student will spend on homework.
State the prompt: We accept homework as a natural part of our scholarly lives. But should we?
Thesis: I do not believe homework should be required of students because it widens inequality and damages students’ mental health.
Body paragraph 1
Homework widens the gap between socioeconomic classes because those with access to time and resources, like tutors, will do better on their homework and get higher grades in class.
Talk about the paper showing the gap in education investment between high- and low-income families.
Body paragraph 2
Homework creates extra stress in students’ lives and can have a negative effect on mental health.
Quote from Stanford study : “students in high-achieving communities who spend too much time on homework experience more stress, physical health problems, a lack of balance and even alienation from society.”
Body paragraph 3
Counterargument: Some may argue for homework as a way of instilling discipline and persistence in students, regardless of how well a student performs on the assignment.
While that is true, students learn and demonstrate discipline and persistence simply in the act of getting up and going to school five days a week. Provide an anecdote about your morning routine and getting ready for school every day.
Restate opinion: I do not think that homework should be required of students.
The way that homework exacerbates inequality and harms mental health creates costs that far outweigh the benefits of homework.
Opinion essay FAQs
An opinion essay is an essay where the writer forms an opinion about a topic, often in the form of an answer to a question, and uses factual and anecdotal evidence to support that opinion.
What is the purpose of an opinion essay?
Opinion essays are used to clearly and informatively articulate a position. Sometimes these positions go against the grain and need extended explanation. Sometimes they are a fresh take on an already popular belief. The opinion essay allows a writer to form an opinion and demonstrate to their reader why they believe it to be true.
How is an opinion essay different from other kinds of essays?
Opinion essays are different from other types of essays because the thesis is based on the writer’s own opinion. Other essays, like argumentative, persuasive, and expository essays, require the thesis to be formed around an external fact, event, or argument.

Some people think that some types of criminals should not go to prison. Instead they should do unpaid work in the community. To what extent do you agree?
Owing to the great variety of crimes that can be punishable by prison, some people argue that not all criminals are the same and it would therefore be more appropriate to give certain criminals community service instead. I agree that in some cases, prison may not be the best solution and community service would probably have more benefits.
One justification given for prisons is to keep society safe by removing criminals from the outside world. So the first thing to consider is if someone who has broken the law is a danger to other people. In the case of violent crime, there is an argument to keep the perpetrator away from society. However, burglary or possession of drugs, for example, does not involve violence against other people so the criminal does not present a direct danger to anyone in the community. Keeping these types of criminals in prison is expensive for the taxpayer and does not appear to be an effective punishment as they often commit the same crime again when they come out of prison.
Personally, I also believe punishments should reform people so they do not reoffend. A further reason not to put these people in prison is that they may mix with more dangerous and violent criminals, potentially committing a worse crime when they are released. By keeping them in the community, helping others, they not only learn new skills, but they could also develop more empathy and care towards others. If this occurs, society can only benefit.
Critics of this more rehabilitative approach to crime believe that justice should be harsh in order to deter people from committing similar crimes and that community service could be less likely to have that effect. However, there is very little evidence to suggest that long prison sentences deter criminals.
In conclusion, putting criminals who are not a danger to society in prison is expensive and, in my opinion, ineffective, both as a deterrent and as a form of rehabilitation. Community service for non-violent crimes benefits both society and the offender. That said, it would be useful to have more data to work out whether community service or prison is more likely to stop someone reoffending. I strongly believe that decisions on how best to deal with criminals should be based on evidence of what actually works.

The subject of how criminals should be punished is complicated, there are a lot of different opinions defending their points of view. There are two main ideas the first is arresting all the offenders, and the second idea is separating those not dangerous to society, and sending them to work in the community. In my opinion, I agree with the second idea, because there are many expenses with the prisons and the prisoners, so if lessen the population in this environment the conditions and the quality could be better than if there were overpopulation, avoiding justice being done right. Furthermore, these people aren't violent and dangerous to others, so with bad company in the prison, they might become bad people too. In this case, it's an awful idea to mix a different kind of person. Therefore, it's an excellent suggestion to oblige these people to do work in society, but with supervision in the right way and strictly.
On account of the differences between several types of crimes, not all criminals should be sent to prison. It is suggested that giving certain offenders community service would be more appropriate than just jailing them.
Honestly, I completely agree that the right way to protect people from harm is to imprison criminals who conduct violent crimes that endanger human physical health. Nevertheless, this penalty may be ineffective with offenders who have administrative guilts or non-violent offenses. Since they often commit the same crime after getting out of prison, this is just a temporary punishment to ensure the security of citizens for a certain period. The nature of the problem is these crimes originate from greed and bad habits which lead to their deviant behaviors but have not yet resulted in such severe consequences that affect human life.
From my perspective, the government would rather reform these types of offenders than deter them as a kind of punishment. It is better to have an alternative that perceptively impacts these people’s awareness which is to make them do community service. Jailing these criminals just increases their hatred and develops antisocial personality. By keeping and controlling them in a community, besides learning new skills, they amend their bad manner as well as develop more empathy and care towards others.
Given these points, the application of punishment should be based on the nature of each specific crime. Prisons should only be used for perpetrators committing directly dangerous crimes to people's lives. Making non-violent criminals do community service is more of a practical way to optimize tax wasted for prisons as well as give them a chance to fix their wrong behaviors.
There are several types of crimes and for each of them, a different sentence is dictated. A paramount question to be considered is whether community servers are more accurate than prisons for some crimes.
To begin with, community servers would help and support criminals through specialized psychologists. Not only would community servers help and support them, but also it would give them jobs to help them give the society back a contribution in return.
In addition, prisons only contribute to worsening the situation owing to the fact that criminals will commit crimes again. The key to excellent behavior is learning. If they learn suitable habits, they will adapt to society and help it.
Furthermore, it is necessary to have empathy with criminals and not judge them because their hate increases when they are condemned in prison. A further reason for this is that hate feeds hate. Nevertheless, some criminals must be in jail due to their danger on the streets. It is difficult to know that a person who kills someone else, is going to change even if he/she receives help from psychologists.
In contrast, most of society believes that all criminals should be in prison. However, prisons must be all comfortable like a hotel in order to bring for the prisoners a place to recover themselves. The reason why they must live in appropriate conditions is due to his mental health. For instance, in Norway, prisons are like hotels because the government considers that criminals need a second chance to live in a community
To conclude, it would be suitable for all criminals to live in accurate prisons in order to recover themselves. Despite the cost that kind of prisons are supposed to take, they are worth paying for them. In my opinion, safety is priceless and is more important than the cost.
There are many things to consider in punishing criminals or law offender, Technically Speaking, Prison sentence varies entirely depending on a Country's legal system.
I partially agree in reinforcing community service to those non violent criminals, whereas harsh punishment for violent criminals who committed felonious crime. This perspective is reflected on my understandings in a community where social injustice is prevalent. In my country misdemeanor crime and felony crime offender are detained in the same prison cell, they only differ in the duration of prison sentence. This is where the serious societal issues of crime rate initially rooted, non violent offenders are mixed up with serious offenders, doing and smuggling drugs all a while in prison.
Further reasons to justify harsh punishment for felonious crime is it can act as deterent for potential criminals, while community service may reinforce less serious offender to reflect on their own actions and give back to the community. Moreover it may help them develop empathy towards others.
In my conclusions punishment should vary on the severity of the crime of the perpetrator, Criminals should be legally convicted and fairness in prosecution of Criminals must be reinforce.
I do agree that people who have done serious crimes have to be locked in prison, but the rest of them it would be better to keep them busy with comunity work, maybe to pick up trash or plant trees, things like that in order to benefit society and also for them to learn new habilities.
It's complicated question. Of course, crime's circumstances mean a lot when we discuss the reasons, but social circumstances mean much more when we discuss the punishment. We might to observe punishment system from very top to down. But we don't have enough time for this and my English doesn't allow to do it:-D Nevertheless, the point is: punishment system is determined by social habits, assumptions and generally by the culture. Judicial system is one of the results of long-lasting complicating process of building society. As a last resort, we might to discuss about certain country, not about whole humanity. Regarding my opinion, I consider that drugs and non-violent crimes shouldn't be punishment with real prison sentences. I think right to keep and bear arms could be one of decision (yes, it would be a lot of accidents for the first time), and drug decriminalization could be another one.
Personally, I think that nobody was born a criminal. Every child comes to this world like an innocent angel, like a white sheet of paper, and only we - adults - are responsible for what was written on this paper. If a child was born in some problem family (alcoholics, drug takers, or criminals) it would have the only way in the future, and this way is not about good education and normal life. Unfortunately, this is how things are. So, in my opinion, and according to my experience in my local and school, most criminals became criminals because of circumstances. And of course, the worth way we can treat them is to put them into prison. Especially if we're talking about young criminals. So yes, I agree with this opinion and we definitely should give non-violence criminals some social works and - this is important - we have to give them the opportunity to get proper education and useful skills so they can find a job and will have a chance to avoid criminal society in future.
yes, I do. the criminals who aren't dangerous for the people can be active in the social. this idea has a many benefits for criminals, government and other people. the first thing is this that they will be active in the social and this has positive effect on them. on the other hand, government spending and taxpayers will reduce.

Share the Wealth
It’s time to stem the financial rivalry that has eroded public esteem for higher education—and for wealthy colleges to share their wealth advantages and endowment income, Bruce A. Kimball and Sarah M. Iler write.

Over the last four decades, public esteem and political support for nonprofit higher education have steadily eroded . The fundamental reason is that the wealthiest colleges and universities compete intensely to increase their revenue, wealth and spending, while the earnings growth of most Americans has lagged behind the cost of living, as we explain in our new book . How, then, can that rivalry be curtailed in order to restore public esteem?
The competition for revenue and wealth began 130 years ago among elite colleges and universities that devised now-conventional practices such as annual alumni funds , national fundraising campaigns and aggressive endowment investing . These tactics have proliferated throughout nonprofit, degree-granting colleges and universities in the United States, which number about 3,300 today and invariably feature a “How to Donate” link on their landing pages.
This competition yielded many benefits for higher education and the nation and was widely applauded through the 1970s . But the growth rate of the U.S. economy then slowed, and the earnings of middle- and working-class Americans trailed the cost of living, depreciating the benefits of the long-standing rivalry, particularly as the list price of tuition and student debt grew .

Meanwhile, the competition resulted in stratifying higher education into rigid castes of wealth with a high concentration in the small, uppermost tiers. As of 2020, just one-fifth of the total number of nonprofit colleges and universities owned nearly 99 percent of endowment in higher education; the wealthiest 3 percent owned 80 percent of endowment, and the richest 1 percent owned more than half. This stratification of invested wealth suggests that higher education is inequitable and even exploitative, in view of the rising list price and student debt.
In addition, the financial rivalry distracts from other worthwhile aims of higher education by encouraging the public to view a postsecondary degree as a monetary investment and, therefore, to undervalue liberal arts disciplines that are thought to lead to less lucrative careers . In fact, this view discourages some people from pursuing college at all , reducing the benefits that higher education provides to our democratic polity.
Finally, the competition contributes to student debt, even though the wealthiest institutions do not burden their own students with debt that they cannot repay. Nevertheless, the wealthiest colleges drive increases in the list price of tuition, at least in the private sector, and in the appetite for ancillary programs and amenities throughout higher education, including the public sector. The rivalry among the richest colleges therefore raises costs for less wealthy colleges, driving up their prices and forcing their middle- and working-class students to borrow more.
Government action will not stem the rivalry. Proposed and enacted remedies have been punitive, such as eliminating various tax benefits for higher education and, above all, imposing an excise tax on the endowment income of several dozen of the wealthiest private colleges and universities, as provided in the Tax Cut and Jobs Act (TCJA) of 2017. Such punitive measures infringe the financial autonomy and initiative of these nonprofit colleges, which is a great strength of American higher education. And these measures do not curtail the competition to increase revenue, wealth and spending.
Instead, we propose that trustees and leaders of the wealthiest elite colleges and universities adopt a new financial strategy for higher education, as happened 130 years ago . Rather than incessantly trumpeting endowment gains, launching fundraising drives and hiking tuition, this new strategy would encourage (1) cooperating rather than competing; (2) disavowing the goal of maximizing wealth, revenue and spending; and (3) aiming to strengthen all of higher education, rather than just themselves. In practice, this new cooperative strategy would mean deliberately sharing their wealth advantages and their endowment income.
Is this proposal naïve, even risible? Why would leaders of rich colleges and universities ever refrain from competing and risk their advantageous position? Self-interest will motivate them, we maintain, for the sake of their own institutions and the entire nonprofit sector of higher education.

Rich colleges and universities can share their wealth advantages at virtually no cost, while rebuilding public esteem and political support. For example, wealthy colleges could require that their highly paid portfolio managers provide gratis investment expertise to little-endowed colleges that cannot afford or even access those managers. In this way, cooperation would supplant the competition described by the late David Swensen , the renowned chief investment officer of Yale University: “Short of beating an archrival at football, posting the highest one-year investment result [of endowment] ranks near the top … of institutional aspirations.” In contrast, our proposal for sharing envisions small, little-endowed colleges throughout the nation participating in and rooting for Yale’s investment result, rather than envying it.
Another example is that wealthy colleges and universities could guarantee the bond issues of selected nonwealthy colleges, particularly historically Black colleges and universities, and lower their underwriting costs in bond markets. During the Great Recession of 2008–09, Harvard raised liquid funds by issuing $2.5 billion in bonds, and the university could have earned much goodwill by assisting similar efforts to issue bonds by small, little-endowed colleges struggling in the recession. There are many ways for rich colleges to share their wealth advantages at virtually no cost if they tried.
The wealthiest colleges could also earn goodwill for themselves and all of higher education by sharing minimal (to them) amounts of their annual endowment income.
Consider that, under TCJA, some of the wealthiest private colleges and universities are paying tens of millions of dollars of excise tax annually on their endowment income. These universities could spend these funds much more efficiently and effectively than the federal government, while rebuilding public esteem and political support for themselves and all of higher education.
For example, in 2020, the University of Pennsylvania pledged to contribute $10 million annually for 10 years to renovate aging school buildings in Philadelphia. Penn certainly could have found ways to spend the $100 million on itself. Why would the university choose not to?
The pledge cost Penn relatively little; the market value of its endowment increased by 38 percent , or $5.6 billion, in the following year. Also, the Philadelphia mayor and school board effusively praised the “historic gift” of the university. One searches in vain for public praise of Penn’s payment of the TCJA tax. Furthermore, what economist Howard Bowen called the “ equi-marginal return ” (often termed “ effective altruism ” today) from spending $100 million on renovating the school buildings is surely greater than from a wealthy university spending on ancillary programs or amenities or the TCJA excise tax.
Similarly, wealthy colleges and universities often have residual endowment income. Unlike foundations, they are not required to spend 5 percent annually of their endowments. Instead, many wealthy colleges and universities maintain conservative spending rules and add the excess endowment income to their principal, which improves their standing in the race for endowment size. Following this new strategy, these institutions could modestly increase their spending rules and subvent carefully selected, needful colleges or school systems across the nation.
In this way, wealthy elites would be investing to rebuild public esteem and political support for themselves and all of higher education. If only a few of them shifted from competition to cooperation, the rest of the 3,300 nonprofits would gradually follow, due to the well-known “ institutional isomorphism ” in higher education, which entrenched the financial rivalry over the 20th century. However, if the wealthiest colleges and universities persist in competing, the TCJA tax will likely never be rescinded, but increased, and other punitive measures will follow.
The wealthiest colleges and universities adopted and established a new successful financial strategy for higher education 130 years ago, and they can do it again today.
