Gábor Lövei’s scientific communication course for students and scientists explores the intricacies involved in publishing primary scientific papers, and has been taught in more than twenty countries. Writing and Publishing Scientific Papers is the distillation of Lövei’s lecture notes and experience gathered over two decades; it is the coursebook many have been waiting for. The book’s three main sections correspond with the three main stages of a paper’s journey from idea to print: planning, writing, and publishing. Within the book’s chapters, complex questions such as ‘How to write the introduction?’ or ‘How to submit a manuscript?’ are broken down into smaller, more manageable problems that are then discussed in a straightforward, conversational manner, providing an easy and enjoyable reading experience. Writing and Publishing Scientific Papers stands out from its field by targeting scientists whose first language is not English. While also touching on matters of style and grammar, the book’s main goal is to advise on first principles of communication. This book is an excellent resource for any student or scientist wishing to learn more about the scientific publishing process and scientific communication. It will be especially useful to those coming from outside the English-speaking world and looking for a comprehensive guide for publishing their work in English.

Description
Writing and publishing journal articles are essential aspects of a successful scientific career. Unfortunately, many scientists find the process of communicating about their work intimidating and confusing. Now in its eighth edition, How to Write and Publish a Scientific Paper teaches how to apply clear focus, good organization, and simple, straightforward language to write papers as well as communicate effectively in many other scientifically related applications.By providing practical, readable, and sometimes humorous guidance, this book enables researchers to gain the knowledge, skills, and confidence to succeed in communicating about their work. The authors not only guide readers in the craft of scientific writing—broken down into the separate tasks of writing the respective sections of a scientific paper and then publishing the paper—but also address important related psychological, ethical, logistical, and cultural considerations in communicating about science. Chapter topics include composing (and requesting) recommendation letters, writing grant proposals, providing peer review, editing one’s own work, preparing oral presentations and poster presentations, and working with the popular media. This is an essential resource for researchers—both native and non-native users of English—with limited experience writing scientific papers, such as graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, and early-career faculty members.
User’s Reviews
Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:
⭐Thrilling read. If you’re having trouble sleeping this is perfect for reading just before bed. If you’re wide awake and want to learn how to write and publish a scientific paper, it works for that too. I’m a grad student and this book was recommended to me by a prof from my undergrad university and it was worth every penny. It helped me get better at analyzing the quality of writing by others
⭐Outstanding. I have made it required reading for my graduate students.Anybody embarking on a career in science should read this book.I have been a professional scientist for 30 years, published 5 books and more than 70 peer-review journal papers, and I learned a lot from reading this work.
⭐This is an excellent companion to the book Scientific English by the same Robert A. Day but with Nancy Sakaduski as co-author. I was able to read completely both books in about two days each. Having published many scientific papers myself in past decades I recognize the important guidance that this book gives. I had to learn this stuff the hard way without such a guide.
⭐A very helpful book. Breaks down by each components and guides you through the common issues. I especially liked additional information provided on the less common situations.
⭐The book came printed upside down and backwards with the text chopped off at the bottom. How do I get my money back for this??
⭐This is one of the better how-to’s on the market.
⭐Great book! A must for graduate students. The main content is presented in a friendly approach for non-native speakers of english!
⭐A Classic.
⭐Got the book yesterday and immediately went through the first 9 chapters in one sitting. Logical presentation of material and easy to comprehend. The length of each chapter is just right, neither too long to get bogged down by details, nor too short and start looking for other books. Useful for ready reference. Will finish remaining chapters as needed. It is interesting to note that each chapter surely makes me want to read further! My first impression : this book is indeed one the best books I have in my personal library. The only minor issue is that Amazon delivered it without a bookmark, which I usually get with my previous orders.

How to Write and Publish a Scientific Paper

Criticism and testing are of the essence of our work. This means that science is a fundamentally social activity, which implies that it depends on good communication. In the practice of science we are aware of this, and that is why it is right for our journals to insist on clarity and intelligibility.

"This workshop is in 3 parts: 1 publishing sequence; 2 stalking your quarry; and 3 extracting the most benefit. Running through the workshop are 3 themes which I hope lead to 3 conclusions I draw: 1 we should address each different audience differently; 2 we need to learn to gauge the strength of our work; and 3 the development from bright idea → publication → glory! is not a self contained project completed in a linear sequence but a continuing program of iterative activities. Recent research shows that journal reviewing practices are neither objective nor fair. I propose a procedure to increase the likelihood of publishing important papers. This will be tested by Interfaces for a year.

Abstract: How to write an abstract was discussed by Prof. Lee Sun-Young. It should be clear, concise summary of a scientific paper. Generally it covers background and aim, methodology, results and conclusions. In original article one tries to answer the question as to why and how you did this study. In the introduction explain why it is interesting, do not repeat the title, and avoid goals stated in the background. Aim should focus on purpose of the study.

There is a newer edition of this item:

Now thoroughly updated and expanded, this new edition of a classic guide offers practical advice on preparing and publishing journal articles as well as succeeding in other communication-related aspects of a scientific career.
Writing and publishing journal articles are essential aspects of a successful scientific career. Unfortunately, many scientists find the process of communicating about their work intimidating and confusing. Now in its eighth edition, How to Write and Publish a Scientific Paper teaches how to apply clear focus, good organization, and simple, straightforward language to write papers as well as communicate effectively in many other scientifically related applications.
By providing practical, readable, and sometimes humorous guidance, this book enables researchers to gain the knowledge, skills, and confidence to succeed in communicating about their work. The authors not only guide readers in the craft of scientific writing―broken down into the separate tasks of writing the respective sections of a scientific paper and then publishing the paper―but also address important related psychological, ethical, logistical, and cultural considerations in communicating about science.
Chapter topics include composing (and requesting) recommendation letters, writing grant proposals, providing peer review, editing one's own work, preparing oral presentations and poster presentations, and working with the popular media. This is an essential resource for researchers―both native and non-native users of English―with limited experience writing scientific papers, such as graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, and early-career faculty members.
- Provides practical, easy-to-read, and immediately applicable guidance on preparing each part of a scientific paper: from the title and abstract, through each section of the main text, to the acknowledgments and references
- Explains step by step how to decide to which journal to submit a paper, what happens to a paper after submission, and how to work effectively with a journal throughout the publication process
- Includes key advice on other communication important to success in scientific careers, such as giving presentations and writing proposals
- Presents an insightful insider's view of how journals actually work―and describes how best to work with them

Reviews & endorsements
'The evolution of digital publishing has revolutionized the scientific publishing landscape, which made a new revised edition necessary (the previous one is from 2011). New items are, for example, the ORCID (that is a unique digital identifier distinguishing an author from any other researcher), the archiving of your (published) paper, warnings against predatory journals, digital poster presentations. There is also a new chapter on editing your own work before publishing … The intended readership is obviously the community of students who did not publish before, so the whole process is explained including the selection of a journal, submitting your paper, the refereeing, and how to react to it, and finally the post-refereeing stage of proofreading and publishing. … Also how to write a book review, give an interview, or write a book proposal. And for the really ambitious, how to become a science communicator.' Adhemar Bultheel, European Mathematical Society
