Difference Between Verbal and Nonverbal Communication

On the contrary, Nonverbal communication does not use words for communicating anything, but some other modes are used, i.e. where communication takes place by way of unspoken or unwritten messages such as body language, facial expressions, sign language and so forth. The communication in which the sender uses words, whether spoken or written, to transmit the message to the receiver is known as Verbal Communication. It is the most effective form of communication that leads to the rapid interchange of information and feedback. There are fewer chances of misunderstanding as the communication between parties is clear, i.e. the parties are using words for saying anything.
The communication can be done in two ways (i) Oral – like face to face communication, lectures, phone calls, seminars, etc. (ii) Written – Letters, E- mail, SMS, etc. There are two types of communication, they are:
- Formal Communication: Also termed as official communication, it is a type of communication in which the sender follows a pre-defined channel to transmit the information to the receiver is known as formal communication.
- Informal Communication: Most commonly known as grapevine, the type of communication in which the sender does not follow any pre-defined channels to transmit the information is known as informal communication.
Definition of Nonverbal Communication
Non-verbal communication is based on the understanding of the parties to communication, as the transmission of messages from the sender to receiver is wordless i.e. the communication uses signs. So, if the receiver understands the message completely and proper feedback is given afterwards, then the communication succeeds.
It complements the verbal communication many times, to understand the mindset and the status of the of the parties, which is not spoken by them, but it is an act of understanding. The types of Non-verbal communication are as under:
- Chronemics: The use of time in communication is chronemics, which speaks about the personality of the sender / receiver like punctuality, the speed of speech, etc.
- Vocalics: The volume, tone of voice and pitch used by the sender for communicating a message to the receiver is known as vocalics or paralanguage.
- Haptics: The use of touch in communication is the expression of feelings and emotions.
- Kinesics: It is the study of the body language of a person, i.e., gestures, postures, facial expressions, etc.
- Proxemics: The distance maintained by a person while communicating with others, communicates about the relationship of the person with others like intimate, personal, social and public.
- Artifacts: The appearance of a person speaks about his personality, i.e. by way of clothing, carrying jewellery, lifestyle, etc. This kind of communication is known as artifactual communication.
Key Differences Between Verbal and Nonverbal Communication
The following points explain the difference between verbal and non-verbal communication in detail:
- The use of words in communication is Verbal communication. The communication which is based on signs, not on words is Non-verbal communication.
- There are very fewer chances of confusion in verbal communication between the sender and receiver. Conversely, the chances of misunderstanding and confusion in non-verbal communication are very much as the use of language is not done.
- In verbal communication, the interchange of the message is very fast which leads to rapid feedback. In opposition to this, the non-verbal communication is based more on understanding which takes time and hence it is comparatively slow.
- In verbal communication, the presence of both the parties at the place of communication is not necessary, as it can also be done if the parties are at different locations. On the other hand, for an effective non-verbal communication, both the parties must be there, at the time of communication.
- In verbal communication, the documentary evidence is maintained if the communication is formal or written. But, there is no conclusive evidence in case of non-verbal communication.
- Verbal communication fulfils the most natural desire of humans – talk. In the case of Non-verbal communication, feelings, status, emotions, personality, etc are very easily communicated, through the acts done by the parties to the communication.

Verbal and Non-verbal communication are not contradictory to each other, but they are complementary as somebody has rightly said, ” Actions are louder than words.” In short, both goes side by side and helps a human being, to interact and respond to other human beings.
Verbal communication is obviously an important part of life as we use words to communicate. Through long years of development, humanity has worked out the combined system of communication, that enables people to interact and transfer information either through verbal or nonverbal way.
Verbal communication founds on the use of language, which is defined by prominent linguist Sapir as “purely human and non-instinctive method of communicating ideas, emotions, and desires by means of a system of voluntarily produced symbols” (Sapir,2007, p.17).
Evidently, spoken language remains the most wide-spread and universal way of rendering information. Therefore, it is the most examined method of language; each road sign conveys specific meaning (“roadwork” or “overtaking prohibited”). Words in their entity serve the chief elements of communication. All the signs accepted in society may be translated by means of communication; their precise meaning becomes clear through the system of verbal and nonverbal devices. The latter affirm, doubt, and justify what is said. The speaker shows ironic or sarcastic attitude to the word by corresponding intonation solely.
Nonverbal communication plays a significant part in information exchange and provides effective personal self-expression because most part of information man receives through the visual channel. Researchers identify kinesics (messages sent by the body and face), paralanguage (voice characteristics: pitch, volume, pace), chronemics (connected with status and punctuality), proxemics (distance between communicators), olfactics (acceptable or unacceptable scents).
Nonverbal codes are considered more reliable and honest in comparison with verbal means because of their less conscious and controlled character.
There are similar expressive movements for different cultures. According to Hindle, “one of the expressions people of different cultures may produce when angry is characterized by opening the corners of the mouth in a particular way and by frowning…, clenching the fists, stamping on the ground and even hitting at objects” (Hindle,1972, p. 299).
Cultural differences in communication codes are object of study for many modern researches. Albert Mehrabian claims that first attempts to identify “the differences encountered during an interaction between members of different cultures” were done by Hall in 1959 (Mehrabian, 2009, p. 6).
One gesture may have different meanings in different cultures. Nodding for “yes” in most countries means “no” in Bulgaria; and vice versa for “not”. Acceptable in one culture may be supposed offensive in another. Indians break bread with right hand solely because the left hand is connected with toilet functions.
Interpersonal space plays a significant part of the process of communication. The attitude of the addressee towards the speaker changes if the comfortable distance is broken. Scientists pay attention to gender related traditions in various countries. In Islamic and Asian cultures touch to the opposite gender person may be considered offend or sexual infringement; in European culture touch of close friends is an ordinary expressive gesture. Shaking hands, men greet each other; this gesture is not adopted among women.
In the process of communication, people belonging to one ethnicity or social group create believes, myths, values. Thus, words bear cultural information revealing distinctions in the spoken language, as well. Ignorance of relevant nuances hampers from understanding a foreign culture. As a rule, notions of this kind are translated through explanation (national heroes, holidays, dishes, historical events etc). Thus, words are not only the signs which identify notions.
The unity of verbal and nonverbal devices enables effective communication. Learning major accepted and forbidden things of the culture you are going to interact with may be helpful to avoid misunderstanding.

Verbal communication is the use of sounds and words to express oneself. Verbal communication is a way for people to communicate face to face. There are different forms of verbal communication. The first one is interpersonal communication is to oneself. An example of this is having a conversation with themselves. This could mean that it can be one’s thoughts. The second one is interpersonal communication. The definition of this is when two people are having a one-on-one conversation. Verbal communication is the most common form communication. There are a fewer chances of misunderstanding as the communication between two parties are clear. Verbal communication can be done in two ways oral and written. Oral communication is lectures, phone calls, and seminars. Written communication for verbal are letters, emails, and text messages.
Nonverbal communication is communication without the use of words. Nonverbal uses body language, gestures, and facial expression. For body language is the first thing you see when a person is trying to get a person attention. If they are sitting up and their body is facing them, they are giving their full attention to that person. Gestures includes the moving of the hands and arms. Some people uses their hands to express themselves when speaking to someone or catch their attention. Facial expressions play a huge part of nonverbal communication. The look on a person face is the first thing a person see before they say something.
Verbal and nonverbal communication are use when conversating with someone. Communication is way to get information across to someone. When people are communicating to one another, the first thing that a person see is the person facial expression when conversating.

For effective communication to take place it is important for receiver to understand the message in the same way as the sender intended to, because same words may have different meanings in different cultures.
For e.g. two persons speaking different languages cannot communicate with each other unless there is a translator with them to translate the words for each of them. Similarly one person using slang language says “ where are my cheaters?” other person may think of cheaters as `glasses` whereas that person intended to ask for unfaithful workers. This is because some cultures like Japanese tend to use very classical language while other cultures may not.
Apart from this there are behavior constraints; every culture has their own rules of how to behave. The actions or words considered to be good in one culture may not be considered as same in other culture. For e.g. saying “ good morning ” may not be considered ethical in other cultures, they might prefer to say “ Assalam o alaikum ”, to shake hands with female employees may be considered to be professional by some females while other females may not be comfortable with this, some cultures exhibit their feelings and emotions openly by being aggressive, because they think it is good to spill out your anger while other cultures may think of this as non professional attitude and prefer to be calm and share only the rational aspects.
These and many other rules like how close to stand, whether to maintain eye contact or not, whether to express views openly or just conform to others so as not to be odd etc. varies from culture to culture (OTPIC, 2005,).
It is interesting to know that even importance of non verbal communication also differs from culture to culture. American doesn’t emphasize much on non verbal cues whereas Japanese and Europeans actively emphasize it. According to them, it is used when verbal communication is no longer able to explain the issue to other person. This happens when language differences exist between two people then they have to use the specific actions by which they can communicate effectively. However, non verbal cues have also different implications in different cultures. Every culture use different systems to understand the facial expressions, gestures, posture, pace of voice, touch, physical appearance, etc.
The research shows that some facial expressions` meanings are consistent within all the cultures like sadness, fear, anger and surprise, but they differ in the way of their acceptance in different cultures. Suppose Japanese explaining the reason of his absence at work because of death in his family. He may explain it with a smile due to his cultural rules of not to impose sadness on others, but this might be attributed wrongly by Americans because generally they perceive smile to be a sign of happiness and they may blame him to be liar.
Many cultures encourage being aggressive to have influence over others while other cultures may prefer to be calm and logical in motivating others to action. This is the reason why many employees are not satisfied with their jobs as they are abused by their authorities, but some cultures perceive it to be the right way of doing things (LeBaron 2003).
Apart from this, cultures tend to differ on the issue of dress code at the workplace as well. Many cultures perceive it professional to have same dress code for both genders while other cultures prefer to have different dress codes for males and females. Besides, same gestures have different meanings in different cultures. It is normal for an American to show disgust and anger by showing a finger while it may be attributed as non professional attitude by other cultures such as Europeans or Middle East ones (Reisinger 2009, 176).
Both verbal as well as non verbal problems are essential and cannot be avoided or ignored, though the entire discussion shows that it is more important to address the issues of non verbal communication at first because miscommunication as a result of non verbal cues may lead to various conflicts as discussed above. This may ultimately leads to high turnovers, low job satisfactions, decreased morale, poor cross cultural communications etc.
This does not imply that problem related to verbal communication is not important. They are but they can be given second priority because your actions are observed first and words later. How a person behave, show his feelings, deal with other employees is more important.
A person using familiar language, but acting against the rules, his expression and tone is weird and is unacceptable by other cultures at the workplace cannot be said to have using right non verbal cues. Therefore, to have diverse workforce at the organization, you must have the required strategies to deal with the issues of verbal as well as non verbal cues, focusing on non verbal of course; only then every organization can have an effective cross cultural communication.
To avoid such cross cultural communication problems one should try to study and understand the history of each others` cultures and be sensitive to ones` own non verbal cues as well as to others so as to use them accordingly. It will help to build an effective cross cultural communication system which can enhance and further intensify the relationships.

Verbal communication relies on the use of words, written and unwritten, to convey a message. Verbal messages are conveyed in a linear fashion, with a clear beginning and end, based on sentence structure. We almost always use a conscious plan to deliver verbal communication. We choose the words we wish to convey, even if they don't always come out exactly the way we intended, and are conscious of choosing to speak or write to deliver a particular message.
Nonverbal communication is much more complex. Instead of using words, we utilize many different techniques to convey information nonverbally. We may gesture with our hands, stomp our feet, or make particular facial impressions that convey a certain meaning. We may also demonstrate a willingness (or unwillingness) for physical touch during communication by shaking hands, rubbing someone's cheek, patting a person's back, or giving a high five. We may make or avoid eye contact with a person, or we may distance ourselves in ways that connote warmth or coldness.
We may not even speak at all, choosing silence to convey a message. Many of these forms of nonverbal communication are not planned—at least not to the degree that verbal communication is. Unlike verbal communication, we may not even be aware that we are delivering a particular message through our nonverbal communication cues, and these cues may conflict with the verbal message we had planned to deliver. For example, I might tell a student (verbal communication) that I am happy to see her, but if I do so while avoiding eye contact, rolling my eyes, crossing my arms, and maintaining a great physical distance from her (nonverbal communication), she isn't likely to believe my verbal message.
We rely on the combination of verbal communication and nonverbal communication to effectively discern intended meanings in the interactions we engage in each day.

To my way of thinking, one of the biggest differences between verbal and nonverbal communication is the ease with which one can lie. It is easy to lie using only verbal communication, such as on the phone for example. It is far more likely that your lie will become apparent through your nonverbal communication, which includes elements such as facial expressions, whether or not you are making eye conduct, and hand gestures. As the old saying goes, a picture says a thousand words, and I would argue that you can tell more about what a person is saying based on nonverbal communication.
Verbal communication consists solely of the words that you say. It is an auditory output that is completely controlled by the speaker. Nonverbal communication, however, is a lot more difficult to control. If one is telling a lie, one is far more likely to refrain from making eye contact and to be fidgety, for example. Nonverbal communication can also tell a story about your confidence levels, based on your posture and the tone of your voice. Based on the hand gestures that someone may use without realizing it, non-verbal communication can tell a story about the person’s frustration levels or passion about the topic they are speaking about.
In a nutshell, then, the difference between verbal and non-verbal communication is that non-verbal communication can tell a far fuller picture than verbal communication can. While verbal communication is a purely auditory medium, nonverbal communication involves other senses, such as sight.

Verbal communication uses sounds, words, and languages to get your message across, while nonverbal communication uses non-vocal tools like eye movement, body language, and tone .
Communication is the process of passing or exchanging ideas, emotions, information, and thoughts between two or more people. When a meaningful interaction happens among people, then effective communication takes place.
In simple words, the way people perceive and understand the meaning of words or sentences or physical actions, and then a process of communication happens. Communication is very essential at all levels in human life without which one can’t survive in this social environment encompassing personal as well as professional.
The main purpose of communication is to correctly pass the information to the receiver, thus creating clarity of thoughts and removing misunderstanding, else the whole idea of the communication could be defeated. But communication has discrete forms or types, the main are Verbal and Non Verbal Communication that is not clear to many.
Verbal vs Non-Verbal Communication
The difference between Verbal and Non-Verbal Communication is that in Verbal communication, thoughts or emotions or information is exchanged between individuals through the use of speech. Non-verbal communication refers to signals transmitted through facial expressions, posture, eye contact, gestures, tone of voice, body language , and other ways.
Any interaction where a person uses the words to converse then it’s recognized as verbal communication . Nonverbal communication is also considered as an indirect method through which people communicate with others without using words or language.

In Verbal communication , a person uses words or speech to exchange information or messages. It takes place in the form of oral as well as a written format between two or more persons.
Examples of verbal communication are meetings, letters, reports, emails, notes, memos, group discussions, interviews, counseling, face-to-face conversations, telephone calls, radio, etc.
Verbal communication plays an integral role in maintaining successful and positive relationships.

What is Non-Verbal Communication?
Non-verbal communication is the widely used method in the communication process where a person doesn’t use a single word or language to pass his/her message or information to other people. When a person doesn’t use the words to converse with others rather uses visual cues such as facial expressions, gestures, eye contact, posture, body language, tone of voice to express their feelings or convey the message, then it is called a Non-verbal communication .
When a person attending any meeting, appears for an interview, gets into the group discussion or in any activity, then how people carrying themselves through physical means explains their non-verbal responses. For example, poor posture in the interview represents unprofessional and casual behavior, avoiding eye contact or downward gaze reflects that a person is not confident enough, the person standing or sitting with crossed arms means he might be defensive, etc.
Non-verbal communication skills can’t be learned, they are peculiar to individuals as they reflect the personal attitude of the person towards life and other people.
This particular skill can make or break the relationships of the person at personal as well as at the professional front. It is not a structured method that is guided by specific rules & regulations rather non-verbal communication is a reflection of the person who is involved in the communication process.
One has to understand how their expressions can impact the other person and thus need to be very careful.

There are many differences between the two forms of communication, namely verbal and nonverbal communication. In some places, non-verbal communication assumes more significance than verbal communication and in other places it is the vice versa. Let us begin our understanding of these two types of communication in the following manner. Man is a social animal and cannot live alone. He lives in a society and interacts with others that are a basic necessity for him. Language plays a vital part in all interactions of a man in the form of verbal communication, but there is another form of communication which is equally important in a man’s interactions with others. This is known as nonverbal communication that is all about getting cues from gestures , facial expressions and eye movements of a person. Through this article let us attempt to highlight the difference between verbal and nonverbal communication while gaining an understanding of both concepts.
What is Verbal Communication?
First let us begin with Verbal Communication. This can be defined as the communication or exchange of ideas that occurs through words . This can be both written and oral . Verbal communication allows individuals to exchange ideas, opinions, values, suggestions and creates an atmosphere where an individual can connect with another. When we engage in a conversation with a friend, this is verbal communication because it allows us to use words to communicate with the other person. The significance of verbal communication is that it creates a condition where transferring information becomes very clear. Let us take the case of an industrial setting where communication is verbal, but mostly this is written communication. Through letters, various documents, reports, and memos, the workers communicate with others. This is not oral communication in most situations but written communication. Since words are used for exchanging ideas, we consider this as verbal communication. Now let us understand what is meant by nonverbal communication.
What is Nonverbal Communication?
Nonverbal communication is through facial expressions, gestures and also thorough postures . People communicate a lot non-verbally. Have you ever seen two people not knowing each other’s language communicating with each other? Though they feel a lot of difficulties, they somehow manage to tell each other what they want to convey the message with the help of facial expressions, eye contact and movement of hands.
Why go so far as to talk about people knowing languages? A mother communicates with her newborn child through her actions, and the child learns to understand her wishes in a quick time. An infant knows no language , yet a mother knows all about her child with the help of the movements the child makes and the manner in which he cries or emits sounds. This is all non-verbal communication.
Even in the workplace, at schools, on the streets nonverbal communication takes place. In the workplace, nonverbal communication can take place between team members and the manager. For an example, a subordinate learns to understand the mood of his superior with the help of his frown or facial expression. In a classroom, a glare from the teacher is often more effective than her shouting or scolding. This highlights that in real life, non-verbal communication takes precedence over verbal communication as the first impression that gets created is through one’s confidence and body language that is a type of nonverbal communication. Now let us summarize the difference between verbal and nonverbal communication in the following manner.

This kind of communication works always. However, it is not always the case that one speaks before people can derive the thoughts of that person. A lot of these thoughts can simply be derived from gestures, signals, or expressions. This kind of communication can be very effective if one sends the appropriate signals aimed at the right target (Abramovitch 1977, p. 82). This form of communication can easily be misunderstood if the wrong signals are sent to the recipients. Hands are significant in conveying non-verbal communication as they are used for gesturing. The facial expression and body language also play a big role in this form of communication. It is possible to know someone’s private feelings simply by looking at that person’s facial expression. For instance if a colleague is not in a good mood, one will simply need to look for the nonverbal communication that that person portrays. For communication to be effective, attention has to be given to that which is communicated non-verbally, good examples being the use of space, gestures and body language. Non verbal communication may differ according to different cultures and this may be the main cause of misinterpretation. There are cultures that take the nodding of the head vertically as an agreement while others take it as a refusal. There are those who would perceive a minors direct look into the eye as honest while others while perceive it as disrespect. For one to mask feelings or spontaneous reaction to information, the attention must be paid to the nonverbal behavior. It might be easy for one to control his/her voice or words yet still that person’s body language, facial expression as well as movement can expose his/her real thoughts and feelings. No matter the position that one holds at the place of work, the ability to interpret non-verbal communication adds to the ability of that individual to share meaning with others. This is because the shared meaning is what constitutes communication (Abramovitch 1977, p. 87).
To understand nonverbal communication, one needs to recognize that different people communicate on different levels. Every gesture usually communicates something and all that is needed is to pay close attention to it. If the verbal and non-verbal communication is not in harmony, it is more likely that the communicator will be lying or is of a different idea from that being communicated. It might therefore be reasonable for the listener not to pay attention to that person’s non-verbal communication. Non verbal communication might play a significant role during a job interview as the interviewer will be able to deduce the kind of person the candidate is, as well as his/her strengths and weaknesses. During a criminal investigation, the non-verbal signals that are relayed by the person under investigation may be even of greater importance that the verbal statements that that person gives. It might be easier for the investigators to determine if the person being investigated is lying, is hiding some information or if the person is speaking the truth. This will only be possible if the investigator understands and rightly interprets the non-verbal signals. Non-verbal communication is complicated and it may be challenging to understand its signals. This type of communication involves the whole body, the space occupied, the time taken, what is left out and how it is left out. Non-verbal communication flows from one to another and this makes it difficult single out one element and interpret it correctly from the series of other elements. This type of communication is constantly in motion just as human beings are and it does not replicate itself in the same place. This kind of communication unlike the spoken or written communication is irreversible. For the written communication, the communicator might be in a position to clarify, correct or retract the message that is conveyed. For the oral communication, one is able to give an explanation or restate with the intention of clarifying the point. It is therefore possible to correct oral communication, as much as the original message remains with its impact as well. It is not possible to separate a single non-verbal action from its context correct it and take it back. In speech, this kind of communication is always occurring and it becomes difficult to tell when a single non verbal message starts or stops and to exactly determine when the next one starts. The communication is only relevant in its context and if it is singled out then it might easily be misinterpreted and misunderstood hence leading to a wrong conclusion being drawn. One usually expresses himself or herself first through the nonverbal communication always without even consciously thinking about it. This communication portrays ones feelings and thoughts way before the person becomes aware of it. This kind of communication usually brings out the intentional as well as unintentional messages. It is common for people to concentrate on how someone says something than what that message is really. It is surprising that human beings use more non-verbal communication than the verbal one and in some cases this type of communication may add up or even replace the verbal one (Bull 1987).

All in all, non-verbal communications are universal. They be used differently by different people in different places or they may take a different form but they will remain to be non-verbal communications. Nonverbal communication forms a basis for communicating emotional massages as people rarely express their emotions through the spoken word. Most of the time people express their emotions none verbally. This is contributed to by the fact that some emotions might not be expressed well or fully in the verbal form. It is very easier to deduce deception for a speaker by keenly observing the person’s non-verbal communication. Such a person may for instance avoid eye contact, awkwardly pause during the conversation, and delay while responding to questions, changing body movement and posture frequently. They person might also smile less and reduce the rate of his/her speech. When such behaviors are noticed in the speaker, the listener(s) may be required to be a bit keener. People’s speech patterns speak a lot concerning the truthfulness in the messages being conveyed. This type of communication is very significant in the relationship that exists between the speaker and the audience. When people meet for the first time, the first conclusions that are made about the different parties are usually derived from the non-verbal messages that are displayed (Scheflen 1964). This is usually based on the dressing code, the physical characteristics and the posture. Nonverbal communication therefore affects the first impression made, for better or for worse. Assumed expectation is usually derived from the speaker’s maintenance of personal space, the dressing code as well as the physical characteristics right from the time the speaker meets the audience. As much as these expectations may neither be fair nor accurate, they always exist. Controlling the verbal and nonverbal communication is important in forming a good rapport with the audience (Ekman & Friesen 1969). Maintaining eye contact with them, using space appropriately and being formal enhances this kind of relationship. Nonverbal communication is usually perceived to be part of the message and it has the capability to contribute to or lead to detraction from the overall goal.
It is believed that whatever is not said is just as significant as what is said. Words just form a section of communication. From a facial expression, it is possible to determine whether someone is happy, surprised, fearful, angered, disgusted, interested or sad. Interpreting nonverbal communication needs no special communication. It may however require extensive training for one to be self aware of portraying nonverbal communication to others. Agreement between the two forms of communication enhances the establishment of a common understanding. A genuine and positive smile could indicate an agreement with an idea or a person. The attire that is worn also plays a significant role in bringing out a nonverbal message. What someone puts on is what people call a ‘fashion statement. A formal dressing code could be adapted while speaking in an official meeting. On the contrary, a casual code could be adapted if the message is targeted to people within an informal setting. Eyes have always been perceived to be windows to the soul. Maintaining an eye contact could be a show of interest or attraction, while disgust is indicated by an upward nose wrinkle and raising of the upper lip. The element of time keeping also falls under nonverbal communication. When a speaker arrives at a meeting on time, and sticks to the stipulated time, it speaks a lot about that person. It implies seriousness and commitment on the speaker’s side. It also says a lot about the gravity of the topic under discussion (Scheflen 1964). Culture plays a very significant role in any communication. In the case of nonverbal communication, culture determines what is and what is not allowed. Some cultures give room for lateness while others do not (Argyle & Kendon 1967).
Nonverbal communication just like the verbal one is a section of a society’s backbone. This kind of communication is necessary for helping people to coexist and build their own culture. For any communication study to be effective, one needs to grasp the basic concepts of not only the verbal but the nonverbal communication as well. Most of the time, these two forms of communication occur together. The non verbal communication is usually composed of three major components which include; the one creating the communication, the communication itself and the recipient (Darwin 1872). There has always been a misconception that sign language falls under the nonverbal communication. This is however not the case as sign language is categorized under the visual language-based communication. There needs to be a complementary relationship between the verbal and the verbal forms of communication. If not, then the result is confusion, disappointment and mistrust. Whatever is said must be complemented by the actions (Benjamin & Creider 1975). Nonverbal communication is significant in the clarification and making the verbal communication to be well understood. Facial and hand gestures are used to illustrate whatever is communicated. It offers the cues that assist in ensuring that the message is understood. This type of communication is important as it portrays one’s perceptions, beliefs and the person’s world view. They expose whatever is in a person. If one pulls back when a hug is offered it may signify that the person has an aversion to the physical touch which could be attributed to his/her past experiences (Argyle & Kendon 1967). The non verbal communication plays a big role in affirming a message. For instance, verbal communication demonstrating how to use online purchasing tools could be affirmed by the speaker taking a computer and demonstrating the same to the audience. It helps in reinforcing the message.
At the workplace, violating ones personal space is a nonverbal communication that might be offensive. Slumping in a chair could be a sign of fatigue or an indication that the person is sad. Boredom at a meeting could be expressed through yawning while anger could be expressed by folding the hands. Such clues can be used while encouraging someone positively respond when asked to do something. While at the workplace, it is possible to know the feelings of workers just by observing their body languages or facial expressions. - Differences Between Verbal and Nonverbal Communication
There are four fundamental differences between verbal and nonverbal communication. The first difference between verbal and nonverbal communication is that we use a single channel (words) when we communicate verbally versus multiple channels when we communicate nonverbally.

Try this exercise! Say your first and last name at the same time. You quickly find that this is an impossible task. Now, pat the top of your head with your right hand, wave with your left hand, smile, shrug your shoulders, and chew gum at the same time. While goofy and awkward, our ability to do this demonstrates how we use multiple nonverbal channels simultaneously to communicate.
Decoding a single verbal message is difficult due to the arbitrary, abstract, and ambiguous nature of language. However, think how much more difficult it is to decode the even more ambiguous and multiple nonverbal signals we take in like eye contact, facial expressions, body movements, clothing, personal artifacts, and tone of voice all at the same time. Despite this difficulty, Motley found that we learn to decode nonverbal communication as babies. Hall (1984) found that women are much better than men at accurately interpreting the many nonverbal cues we send and receive (Gore, 2009). How we interpret these nonverbal signals can also be influenced by our gender as the viewer.

The second difference between verbal and nonverbal communication is that verbal communication is distinct (linear) while nonverbal communication is continuous (in constant motion and relative to context). Distinct means that messages have a clear beginning and end, and are expressed in a linear fashion. We begin and end words and sentences in a linear way to make it easier for others to follow and understand. If you pronounce the word “cat” you begin with the letter “C” and proceed to finish with “T.” Continuous means that messages are ongoing and work in relation to other nonverbal and verbal cues. Think about the difference between analog and digital clocks.
A digital clock functions similarly to verbal communication. Unlike an analog clock, a digital clock is not in constant motion. Instead, it replaces one number with another to display time (its message). A digital clock uses one distinct channel (numbers) in a linear fashion. When we use verbal communication, we do so like the digital clock. We say one word at a time, in a linear fashion, to express meaning.
Now contrast this to an analog clock, that represents nonverbal communication in that we generate meaning by considering the relationship of the different arms to each another (context). Also, the clock’s arms are in continuous motion. We notice the speed of their movement, their position in the circle and to each other, and their relationship with the environment (is it day or night?).
Nonverbal communication is similar in that we evaluate nonverbal cues in relation to one another and consider the context of the situation. Suppose you see your friend in the distance. She approaches, waves, smiles, and says “hello.” To interpret the meaning of this, you focus on the wave, smile, tone of voice, her approaching movement, and the verbal message. You might also consider the time of day, if there is a pressing need to get to class, etc.

The third difference between verbal and nonverbal communication is that we use verbal communication consciously while we generally use nonverbal communication unconsciously. Conscious communication means that we think about our verbal communication before we communicate. Unconscious communication means that we do not think about every nonverbal message we communicate. If you ever heard the statement as a child, “Think before you speak”, you were being told a fundamental principle of verbal communication. Realistically, it’s nearly impossible not to think before we speak. When we speak, we do so consciously and intentionally. In contrast, when something funny happens, you probably do not think, “Okay, I’m going to smile and laugh right now”. Instead, you react unconsciously, displaying your emotions through these nonverbal behaviors. Nonverbal communication can occur as unconscious reactions to situations. We are not claiming that all nonverbal communication is unconscious. At times, we certainly make conscious choices to use or withhold nonverbal communication to share meaning. Angry drivers use many conscious nonverbal expressions to communicate to other drivers. Also, in a job interview, you are making conscious decisions about your wardrobe, posture, and eye contact.
Case in Point
Body language expert and author, Vanessa Van Edwards reveal some interesting facts about body language in western culture in an interview with AM Northwest Today on September 18, 2013. She explains that men are not as good at reading body language cues as women because they use different areas of their brain when decoding. She states, “women might be better at reading body language because … [they] have 14 to 16 active brain areas while evaluating others, whereas men only have 4 to 6 active.” Edwards also explains how men and women nonverbally lie differently because they tend to lie for different reasons; “Men lie to appear more powerful, interesting, and successful, … [whereas] women lie … more to protect others feelings”. The fourth difference between verbal and nonverbal communication is that some nonverbal communication is universal (Hall, Chia, and Wang, 1996; Tracy & Robins, 2008). Verbal communication is exclusive to the users of a particular language dialect, whereas some nonverbal communication is recognized across cultures. Although cultures most certainly have particular meanings and use for nonverbal communication, there are universal nonverbal behaviors that almost everyone recognizes. For instance, people around the world recognize and use expressions such as smiles, frowns, and the pointing of a finger at an object. Note: Not all nonverbal gestures are universal! Cultural Differences in Non-verbal Communication
As globalization suddenly gained popularity and widened the breadth of the global economy and society, the human interaction has also increased. Communication is an essential aspect of man’s life. Through communication, we are able to expressed ourselves, our ideas and thoughts and even share this to others. It is a vital human activity in order to carry out their everyday functions and other important human activities.

Communication is the process of transmitting messages and information from one point to another. This aims to avoid misunderstanding and conflict. Communication involves various skills pertinent to carry out the process properly like listening and analyzing. The communication process is utilized in various areas of life such as community, home, school and the workplace (Bergeson, n.d.).
Communication is the process of exchanging thoughts, ideas and emotions. There are various types of communication process based on communication channels and based on style and purpose.
Due to the diversity present in the global society, differences in culture and race arise. Diversity causes differences in communication. The differences in culture intensify the gap in communication between people from two different cultures.
Communication occurs between individuals everyday. The communication process of people varies according to the differences among cultures. People, therefore, communicate differently as they also grow up adhering to their inherent culture. The way we speak is influenced by our cultural environment. This particular attribute of communication poses problems in understanding members of other cultures. There is a high possibility for people to misunderstand the messages being conveyed by people belonging to other cultural groups because of the differences in the actions and styles that every individual has been accustomed to.
There is always a high possibility of creating misunderstanding and conflicts to occur between individuals belonging from different cultures. Difference in cultures is one of the reasons why there is diversity in the global community. Cultural diversity sets one culture apart from the other, distinguished by its discernible characteristics. The difference between cultures enables people to classify people according to their origins. For example, people can readily distinguish French people from the Japanese because of the immense difference between their cultural backgrounds.
The cultural heritage prevalent within a nation highly influences the lives of the people within that community. Culture is the embedded characteristics of a particular community that is instilled by the first settlers of the community and passed on to generations thereafter. Culture influences beliefs, lifestyle and practices of people. It also influences the way people act and speak in front of other people. Culture is an important aspect of the society because it molds and shapes its members.
The way people communicate with others is influenced by the instilled culture in a society. The non-verbal communication is one of the aspects of communication that is greatly influenced by culture. Most of human interaction happens in a non-verbal form. As such, a study conducted stated that almost 70 percent of human communication is non-verbal (Barnum & Wolniansky, 1989).
In all cultures, first impressions are very important. Those first impressions happen mostly on the initial meeting with other people. Non-verbal cues were consciously or unconsciously conveyed by people that form the first impressions even before verbal communication occur (Bente, Senokozlieva, Pennig, Al-Issa, and Fischer, 2008). Non-verbal cues and messages become clues when people are uncertain of the verbal messages delivered by others. This mostly becomes useful when we are speaking with people from different culture and speaking a different language. The non-verbal communication can be in various forms such as posture, feelings, facial expressions, touch, proxemics, and other nonverbal signals.
The problem with non-verbal cues lies in the possibility that it may bear a message different from an individual’s perception, based on his or her cultural background. Some people may understand non-verbal messages differently from the original intent of the sender because of the differences within the context of the culture at which the message has been applied. For example, the OK hand sign, the peace sign, and the Fonzie thumb sign all take different contexts in countries outside of the United States. In the United States smiling is very natural and usually shows that a person is happy. In Asian culture, smiling can mean the person is embarrassed or is suffering pain due to a tragedy. The Fonzie thumb sign in Greece means “get stuffed”, but in the U.S. it means great job or awesome. A simple gesture in the United States such as motioning someone with their hand to come closer can offend a Latin American, because for the Latin Americans, it is rude to make such a gesture.
Every behavior is anchored on the cultural context of a nation. The cultural context can be defined as the “web of experience” which includes thoughts, acts and the past experiences of an individual. It is the shared values of the individuals living in a society (Singh, McKay and Singh, 1998). Culture is socially constructed by the members of the society and as such, it is continuously altered and reshaped by generations.
It is relevant to understand the importance of high and low context communication for it provides the basis in understanding the non-verbal behaviors of people. All cultures are characterized by their discernible communication style ranging from low to high context communication. In high context communication, verbal messages are dominant and they occur mostly in the interaction. The Americans and other western cultures rely mostly in high context communication wherein a great amount of information is conveyed verbally (Singh et al., 1998).
However, in the low context communication, a big part of the message is conveyed non-verbally. The message is indirectly sent to the intended receiver. People from the holistic cultures such as the Asians, Native Americans and Hispanics rely most often in non-verbal communication in order to decipher the real meaning of the message (Singh et al. 404).
It is important that we understand the non-verbal cues of other people, especially those who aspire to be good communicators for it is an essential part in understanding other people. Non-verbal cues are sometimes part of the cultural beliefs and traditions of people for it is part and influenced by their inherent culture. In an interview of the popular television host, Barbara Walter with Colonel Muammar el-Qauddafi from Libya, Walters commented after the interview that, “He wouldn’t look me in the eye. I found it disconcerting…” (Barnum & Wolniansky, 1989).
In the United States, looking in the eye shows sincerity and honesty. It is important especially for interviewers because they determine if you are honest and sincere on what you are saying. This particular action is anchored in the cultural beliefs and tradition of the Arabs. In Arab culture, men show compliment to women by not looking at them in the eye because by doing so it could be interpreted as a physical attack towards them. The culture of an individual is a factor that dictates his or her non-verbal actions (Bente et al., 2008).
With the prevalence of diversity, there will always be the tendency of misunderstanding and development of conflicts. People may experience difficulty in understanding another person from another culture in the absence of proper appreciation and knowledge on the various types and contexts of communication.
Learning the non-verbal cues and other non-verbal aspects of communication is very important especially in dealing with other people from other culture and those who speak a different language and use a different communication style. The key is to know what we are looking for or our aim in conducting that communication process.
