Not A Hero Essay

Not a Hero Everyone might be familiar with heroes, no matter the imaginary or the real heroes, such as Batman and Martin Luther King. At the end of most stories, heroes would achieve their missions and become successful. I think that is what most people will remember about the stories or myths. However, people would barely mention or pay attention to the sidekicks in the stories. I guess the title “sidekicks” already sounds less important. On the other hand, sidekicks mostly just assist heroes and they are not the ones who achieve the mission at the end. Try to imagine, if Batman didn’t have such a great steward assist him, if Martin Luther King didn’t have the support from his people, would they be successful at the end? Even though many people seem to have the potential to be a hero, there is always only one hero who exists at the end. The famous ancient Chinese myth “Journey to the West” will be a good example. The story is about four monks who travelled all the way from China to India and overcame many difficulties in order to ask for the Buddha’s scriptures. One special thing about this group is there was only one human being among them, whose name was Xuanzang. Monkey King was his first disciple, Zhu Bajie was the second one (who originally was a pig) and Sha Wujing was his third disciple (who originally was a monster that lived in the river). Another similar example but from the modern society is the movie Inception. Inception is about a group of people who need to get into a person’s dream in order to change his business idea; they tried to plant a new idea in his mind. Similarly with “Journey to the West”, the master – Dom Cobb (Leonardo) started forming the group by himself. He started recruiting talented people to join him and help him to finish the mission. He has three sidekicks as well (since there would be only one hero exists in the stories, other people would automatically become sidekicks or we might call them disciples as well). His team included Ariadne who helped him to build the dream (the architect), Arthur who helped with the timing, and Eames who was a pretender. The biggest similarity between these two stories was the missions were achieved by a group of people instead of one person. Also, the characters have many similarities; no matter the central persons or the sidekicks. The central persons Xuanzang and Cobb have a lot in common for sure since they were considered as the heroes in the stories. Let’s compare Ariadne and Monkey King first. Both of them were talented and have great passion about what they were doing. However, they were both arrogant and too impulsive. Xuangzang punished Monkey King many times because he always acts before he thinks. On the other hand, Ariadne almost got killed because she entered Cobb’s dream without his permission and she didn’t know anything about Cobb’s dreams. Now let’s take a look at Arthur and Sha Wujing. They shared the same characteristics which are composure and improvisation. However, they might not be willing to take the risks because of they were too calm about the situations. Both Zhu Bajie and Eames have the optimistic attitude and always seem to enjoy their lives. I think their disadvantages included blind optimistism sometimes so that they might feel shocked by the unexpected outcomes or underestimated the risks which may have put them in dangerous. We probably still have the question of why a person can become a hero. Besides what Campbell said, heroes always have the “supernatural aid” to help them get through the hardships (69). I think what made some persons become heroes in the story is they have the same good qualities as the sidekicks have while they have other good qualities that the sidekicks don’t have. Xuanzang and Cobb definitely have talents. Xuanzang became a monk during his early age. He learned how to read and write Sanskrit much faster than his peers. On the other hand, Cobb was Show More

Odysseus' Selfishness Essay

Odysseus portrays himself as anything but a hero throughout Homer’s The Odyssey. Odysseus goes through his life believing he is the best. He has no regard for anyone’s feelings but his own, and he believes nothing and no one can harm him, not even the gods. Odysseus feels he is always the leader and no one can tell him otherwise. Odysseus: A True Modern Hero Essay

In Homer’s, The Odyssey, I believe that Odysseus is a true modern hero. During his long and perilous journey home Odysseus shows many heroic qualities that help save his men from many dangerous situations. He first shows his Valiant behavior during the war in Troy, he cares about his crew and survives the war. He also deeply cares about the welfare of his men on their return trip to Ithaka. Odysseus is a hero because he is a courageous leader, a quick thinker and a modest man.

Odysseus in The Odyssey: Hero or Not? Essay

The majority of those who read The Odyssey consider the protagonist of the story, Odysseus, a hero. On many occasions, however, Odysseus makes decisions beneficial to himself alone. For example, when Odysseus and his men find themselves on Polyphemus's island, Odysseus's actions are self-centered and at the expense of his men. This can be said for most of Odysseus's actions in the story, as his main objective is to reach his home. Having his men by his side when he returns seems a trivial thing to him. Odysseus could be considered a hero, but many of his actions say otherwise. Due to the many unfaithful and self-centered decisions he makes in the story, Odysseus is not a hero.

The True Hero : Odysseus Is Not A Hero

Odysseus is not a hero because he constantly puts his men in danger and makes decisions without thinking. Odysseus is sailing away from Cyclops Island and he is teasing Polyphemus about escaping. The crew tries to get Odysseus to be quiet, but his ego gets in the way, and he tells Polyphemus his name; leading to Polyphemus cursing him and his men to make the journey home slow and painful. Odysseus tells the Phaeacians in his story, “So they spoke, but they could not persuade my great-hearted spirit; and I answered him again with angry heart: “‘Cyclops, if any one of mortal men shall ask thee about the shameful blinding of thine eye, say that Odysseus, the sacker of cities, blinded it, even the son of Laertes, whose home is in Ithaca’””(Homer.9.500-506). Odysseus comments that his crew tried to calm him down and get him to stop talking, but he

Yes, I do agree that Odysseus was thoughtless, selfish and deceitful but these qualities were necessary for him to complete his journey and be seen as a hero on his return to Ithaca. Greek heroes like Odysseus were greater than the average man and achieved much notoriety and fame by being thoughtless, selfish and deceitful. Inevitability Odysseus, curiosity led him to make bad decisions after all he was only human and not a god. This is important to remember because without these character flaws Odysseus would have looked to perfect to be a hero.

In Homer's Odyssey Odysseus is a character who, sometimes behaves like a proper hero and also as a very self-centered character at other points. He earns the respect of his men during the Trojan War by making good sound decisions and caring about the welfare of his men. But, in his adventure home Odysseus is definitely not taking the responsibility of a hero among his men. On almost any page you turn to in the epic, you can find some act of greed or foolishness coming from Odysseus. He plays with the lives of his men with no regard for the well-being or their families. The Example Of Tocachus Is Not A Hero Of Odysseus

Odysseus is not a hero because he is selfish. First example is that he mounted Circe’s, a woman that helped Odysseus, bed. Odysseus said “ then, at last , I mounted circe’s gorgeous bed….” (Homer 10.386). This shows that Odysseus had mounted Circe’s bed and that he had a affair with Circe. He wasn't thinking about his wife and son. This shows that he is selfish. Also this shows that he cheated on his wife Penelope, he also never told her about it. Another example that proves he is not a hero when he was acting selfish by sacrificing his crew men. Odysseus said, “ comrades riven in agony/ shrieking out my name /.../ angler poised on a jutting rock /.../ gasping out their lives. (12.270-75). This shows that he is really selfish because instead of sacrificing his life he was thinking about him self and he killed his crew members. This also shows that he is not a hero because he was mean because when the crew members were yelling his name he never saved them all he did was watch them die. Third example is that when the nurce, Eurcilia bathed Odysseus when he was wearing a disguise, she found a scar on him that he got years ago. Then Odysseus threatened her. He told her not to tell anyone who he really is. Homer said, “ But Odysseus shot his right hand out, clutching the nurses throat”. (19.542-43). This shows that he is selfish because he doesn't care about the nurse. He would have killed her thinking she would spoil his plan. Also this shows that he is mean because he yelled at the nurse to not tell anyone who he really is. These details show that Odysseus is not a hero because of his selfishness because in every one of these evidences he only thinks about himself.

Analysis Of Andrew Carnegie's The Gospel Of Wealth

In this text, he makes a valid argument as to why the rich should administer their own wealth unto those with less fortune. He begins his argument by explaining how wealth has revolutionized the United States. Carnegie mentions how the Sioux chief's wigwam was similar in appearance when compared to the huts of those inferior to him, and then compares this to the differences in economic classes of the 1800s. Carnegie later states how the very definition of wealth has changed throughout the years, where the poorest farmer of the 1860s owns more luxuries than the landlord of just a few years prior. Carnegie includes these two facts because he wants to show how much society has progressed throughout the last few hundred years. Then, he begins his real

Did Andrew Carnegie's Philanthropy Make Him A Hero?

When you hear the word “hero,” what names come to mind? What exactly makes a hero? One thing I’m certain of is that Andrew Carnegie was definitely NOT one of them. A hero is someone with integrity, concern for others, and protects. Carnegie, a selfish but self-made, made poor and unethical actions and decisions, not owning the traits of a hero. As a philanthropist, he donated money to support education and other facilities. However, his philanthropy cannot cover up the fact that he was still a villain. That leads to the big question: Did Andrew Carnegie’s philanthropy make him a hero? In my opinion, his philanthropy did not make him a hero at all for various reasons.
