The nature and importance of social class

When identifying the social structure of the society it is necessary to remember that any theory, concepts and methods of its division into strata, classes or groups are conditional. Society itself is not divided into classes or strata, and such a division is the result of social construction, or rather, analysis and interpretation of economic and social conditions of life of people and society.

In general, the U.S. has always considered the state free from class and inequality. In America, people did not agree with European theories of classes, with a look at society as a hierarchy of classes, which predetermine all aspects of human existence. There became popular the theory of the stratum, according to which society is a “multistage continuous gradation of stairs”, where the place of man is not determined by production, as in Marxism, but the distribution factors such as education level, income, the presence of the property. Also it is important that people are more or less free to move from stratum to stratum according to their personal abilities and efforts. (Kingston, 200, p.5)

Social class can be defined as a stable large group of people within the society, community, with approximate equality in income, occupation and lifestyle, havesimilar values, interests and behavior.

Thus, social class in the U.S. is a group of people with similar social status, level of material well-being, education and other indicators. Although the division into social classes is rather conditional, however, in reality, no one doubts the division of the society to various class categories. There are several models of the U.S. division of society into classes. The simplest of them is a division of people into “rich”, “medium” and “poor”, but the reality is of course much more complicated.

Establishing the social class position

A person’s position in the society, his relationship with other people, habits, customs, beliefs, interests are largely connected with the place which he occupies in social community. The phenomenon of social position is the subject of works of many sociologists of the past and present. Numerous studies and observations of the behavior of individuals in social groups show that people with the same or similar status have closer contacts and closer relationships with each other. People, who are surrounded by equal by the status people, feel more comfortable, they do not have feelings of inferiority or vice versa, of superiority. Thus, people begin, unconsciously or consciously, to seek among the social environment people of the equal status and build on this basis social relations. In addition, numerous studies have shown that people with similar or equal status, as a rule, have similar attitudes and orientations, preferences, political priorities, and many other components of thinking and outlook.

In this regard, it is important to define the social position and social status, since they represent a completely different system of social relations and have a completely different content. To determine the differences in a particular social community (social class) is necessary to study the structural parameters that constitute the basic structural characteristics of modern society.

The above parameters can be referred to both a separate individual and to every social group. The totality of these parameters will determine the location or position of an individual or group in the social structure.

Establishing and analyzing the social class identity and class consciousness

According to the table in The New York Times, I can classify myself and my family to the higher middle class. When establishing my position I also used information about my parents because I am 21 years old and am a college student. Of course now I connect my position in society and social class with my family, because I am not yet 25 and I am not completely independent and don’t have independent position, respectively. Only when I finish my studies and will have a stable job and stable income, I will be able to have my own social status.

Belonging to a particular social class have great effect on the behavior and thinking of people, more than other aspects of social life. First, representatives of the upper middle and upper classes have more intangible benefits. Their children are more likely to study at prestigious universities, and will likely show better results than children of parents with not high social position. Secondly, the active life expectancy of wealthy people is greater than of the poor, as they have better life conditions and think more about their health. People belonging to higher middle and upper class have the opportunity to eat well, they do sports and usually have vacations; also they have health insurance and access to sanitation (children’s camp, spa). Third, people with a high income have a greater satisfaction from life, as belonging to a certain social class has an impact on lifestyle, on the number and quality of consumption of goods and services. According to the research, families with low income have more free time they spend watching TV but not playing sports, compared with the well-off families. Also, fast food, potato chips, frozen pizza and hamburgers are often included in the menu of families with low income. (Hamilton, 2010)

If to talk about and my family, I consider myself to be middle and upper middle class. That is why it is necessary to speak about the middle class position in the society.

Middle class is a set of social strata, occupying a middle position between upper and low classes in the system of social stratification. This class is characterized by heterogeneous situation of conflicting interests, consciousness and political behavior. (Hamilton, 2010)

As the primary social group, the middle class in developed countries (and in the USA) has a number of very important social functions. Basic among them is the social function of the stabilizer: having achieved a certain place in the social structure of society, the middle class tend to maintain the existing state system. It is necessary to point out that the middle class plays a leading role in the processes of social mobility, and it also reinforces the existing social order, protecting it from social cataclysms. In addition to the stabilizing function, the middle class plays an important role in other social processes. In the sphere of economic relations middle and upper classes play the role of economic donors, since these people are not only producers of a huge part of the income of the society, but also are major consumers, investors and taxpayers. In the cultural sphere the middle class is a cultural integrator – the guardian and disseminator of values, norms, traditions and laws of the society.

The middle class, which I belong to, is the bearer of the traditional family values, that, however, is combined with a focus on equality of opportunity between men and women in the educational, professional, cultural spheres of life. This class is a mainstay of modern society, its traditions, norms and knowledge. The middle class take active position in the political life of the country, being the guarantee of the evolutionary social development, the formation and functioning of the civil society.

Critics prove that there are interconnections between biography of a person, the social structure and culture of her family or social environment.

The third level – the inter-subjective or meaningful level of social consciousness means the world from within’ of lived experience that comprises how indi­viduals see themselves and one another. At this level, my actions are determined by individual and collective preferences of my neighborhood, in various spheres of life, encom­passing my behavior as a private per­son, consumer, worker, citizen and life­ style and voting behavior (in future). I received good education and hope to find a well-paid job; I have a different life style and preferences; I visit prestigious doctors and have life insurance; I live in prestigious region and my parents have stylish cars, etc. (Birdsall, Graham, 2000).

For instance, in the USA cultural diversity has a great impact on biographies of people and social relations. Similar to my parents, most of people prefer to marriage a person belonging to the same culture as his/her family. In contrast, a person coming from India or Japan would have a different biography influenced by her/his cultural traditions. For instance, cultural traditions of Hindus can be identified with a philosophy of life which involves peculiar social relations and views. In many Asian families, women play a secondary role in contrast to men. Most Japanese and Latino try to find jobs in their ‘regions’ in order to keep cultural traditions and norms. On the other hand, it limits their professional opportunities and social mobility.

In sum, there are interconnections between the social structure and culture which determine life of a person and his/her biography. In many cases, people are limited by their social class and culture unable to break social stereotypes. In other words, upward social mobility becomes impossible for poor social classes, deprived many persistent, hard-working and talented personalities a chance to compete on the labor market. Psychological characteristics and stereotype formation is therefore likely to involve efforts to differentiate groups, and where social reality allows people to positively distinguish themselves from other national or cultural group.

My Short Class Autobiography

I grew up in an upper-middle class family in a suburb of Los Angeles. My father earned his Ph.D. in electrical engineering from UCLA when I was five; my mom went to college part-time at CSUN , and finished her bachelor’s degree in English a few years later. Three of my four grandparents went to college. My paternal grandfather owned his own pharmacy; my maternal grandfather had a law degree, but was employed as a railroad worker. (My mom blamed the Depression for her father’s failure to find work as a lawyer).

My family lived in a nice single-family home with a swimming pool. However, my parents were always frugal. We never bought new cars until I finished high school, our vacations consisted almost entirely in camping, and my weekly allowance was $.05/per year of age (later I bargained for a raise to $.07/per year of age). Their fiscal restraint allowed my parents to invest in real estate, buying several homes as rental properties.

I went to public school for my entire K-12 education, with the exception of 4th grade, when my parents put me in a private Greek Orthodox school to avoid being bussed . I was always a good student, and fortunately, my elementary school offered ability tracking beginning in first or second grade, if I recall correctly. By junior high, I considered non-ability-tracked classes to be not only a waste of time, but very distressing. The “regular kids,” as I called them, were generally anti-intellectual and impulsive. There wasn’t much physical abuse, but there was a lot of emotional abuse, and the less I saw of the regular kids, the better.

Many readers will attribute my school performance and attitudes to my class background, but this is a deep mistake. True, virtually all of the students in my ability groups came from middle-class families. But most of the “regular kids” were middle class too, and I always saw my older brother, a mediocre student, as one of the regular kids. Furthermore, both of my parents discouraged my elitist attitudes, but I just ignored them.

My friends growing up all came from roughly the same social class as I did. The class background of my friends diversified only after I went to college. My best friend from my undergraduate days at UC Berkeley was the only son of immigrants from Latin America. My best friend from my time as a graduate student at Princeton came from a very poor family in the Poconos. But our class differences made no difference to us. Our common intellectual interests, values, and sense of humor were the glue of our friendship.

My childhood would have been much worse if I had grown up poor, but frankly, I doubt that my adult life would have been very different. As long as I had enough to eat, poverty per se wouldn’t have bothered me much. But based on my experience with non-ability-tracked classes, I would have been friendless and bored out of my mind. (These days, perhaps, I could have found solace on the internet at a public school or library). By the time I finished high school, though, there would probably have been plenty of scholarship money available for me. Even if there weren’t, I would have been fanatically motivated to put myself through college in order to escape from my origins.

You could say that growing up poor would have stifled my mental development, but I doubt it. Twin and adoption studies show that childhood environment has little or no long-run effect on IQ. You could say that growing up poor would have changed my attitudes. But I’m a difficult person to mould. I’m an atheist despite sixteen years of my mother’s Catholic indoctrination. If anything, I think that growing up poor would have made me more elitist than I already am, just as growing up Catholic made me more impious.

For my adult life to have been radically different, I would probably have needed to grow up in an absolutely poor family in the Third World, not a relatively poor family in the First World. My instinct in that situation would be to learn English and migrate to the U.S., but immigration restrictions would get in the way. This realization is part of the reason I have so much more sympathy for immigrants than I do for low-skilled Americans.

What if I had grown up rich? Again, I doubt it would have changed much. I would have gone to the Ivy League instead of UC Berkeley, but it’s not like Berkeley held me back. Perhaps I would have been less ambitious if I came from a rich family, but who knows?

From what I’ve seen , the standard function of class autobiography is to make middle- and upper-class authors feel guilty, and the lower- and working-class authors feel resentful. But reflecting on my class history doesn’t make me feel guilty. Rather, it confirms the common-sense view that in the long-run, differences in ability and character are the cause of class differences, and not the other way around.

Like all rich kids, you attribute your current position and success to your own merits, and think that your privileged class origin was meaningless in your own special case.

Think please, if it were so, why so few working class kid succeed in climbing to upper middle class level? In absolute numbers, there are enough high IQ working class kids to provide a sizeable portion of the middle class, yet they are not there, you cannot see them except as a few individuals. There must be many unseen barriers to realize their potential.

Another point: You think the only place for a person like you is in America. You think the rest of the world is a horrible place to be. In general terms, you are right. I am not an American (but Israeli) and think there is (intellectually exciting) life outside America.

Some humility would have been in place.

Poor people tend to have a stronger sense of group and community cohesion. Mutual aid is naturally very important to them–they need it to get by. Only rich people can afford to be individualists. Imagine never asking any of your peers for a favor or advice ever again.

What did your family do to try to keep you from going to college? Did they throw out your standardized test scores before you had a chance to see them? Did they tell you that you’d be better off going to vocational-technical school to learn how to repair washing machines? How many times did they suggest you drop out of Berkeley and transfer to community college? Once? Twice? More times than you can count? Did they repeatedly tell you that “college students don’t get jobs?” Did they say that there were “too many blacks in Berkeley?” “Family is important. We love you, God loves you, don’t you love us? If you loved us you wouldn’t go to college.”

Did your high school guidance counselor address the thirty or so best students in the school and tell them that they should all consider going to community college because it was “just as good” and that they would “get just as good an education there?” Were you told that the sports-oriented state campus that admitted anyone who graduated in the top third of their high school class was “a good school?” Were you told to research college options at your high school’s career center, only to find files full of colorful brochures that told you nothing relevant about the schools? Did your high school offer AP courses, or even tell you of the existence of AP tests? Were you told not to study for the SAT, because it would “artificially inflate your scores, and you’d get admitted to a school where you couldn’t handle the work.” In English classes, did you have to read the same Steinbeck stories that you read in junior high while your friends in the nicer school across town were reading translations of Racine and Moliere?

Did a guidance counselor in college ask you if “a four year college was appropriate for you?” When did you learn that Phi Beta Kappa was not a frat? When did you learn that stipends for graduate students were common at good schools and that you wouldn’t have to pay tuition to continue your studies? Have you attended lesser-known institutions, only to realize that the students at the so-called elite schools aren’t much smarter?

You overstate what childhood and adoption studies show–They show that identical twins reared apart (and mostly not in dysfunctional homes) are more similar than fraternal twins and that identical twins in the same home are more similar than fraternal twins.

Plenty of other studies have shown that a bad environment can do plenty of damage — lack of stimulation, head injury, lead poisoning, etc. Bryan and Arnold and others on this blog, you repeated maintain 1) environment and child rearing are of little importance, and 2)The well being of people born in developing countries is as important as the well being of people born here. Here is the opportunity to test your beliefs: If you truly believe what you say in these blogs–if you have children do the following: 1) Move to the least expensive place you can find, regardless of the schools. 2) Send your children to the local public school. 3) Do not give a dime to your children for higher education. and 4) Take all of the money you save doing this and fund the education of children in some developing country.

Anyone who cannot do these does not truly believe that there are not some people we care more for than others.

I agree with Brian. Poverty in the first world is almost irrelevant as a stumbling block for human development. There are so many options afforded to the poor to help them gain the neccesary skils(free secondary education, for the lucky poor vouchers, scholarships for good academic performance, financial aid). Now if you want to talk about third world poverty as a barrier to development then Im all ears. First world poverty rarely arouses any sympathy within me except in cases of child neglect or abondment. I guess my perspective would be different if I did not have so much personal interaction with poor people who were so incredibly self destructive(DRUGS).

Grew up in Southern California swimming pools on the edge of sprawl.

Parents professional. Dad a gentleman farmer.

Hit the college campus for fun. Fought the government.

Let myself get married and taught my son libertarianism.

Burned through Silicon Valley until the dot com bust.

Quit working, reasoning that someone else should pay the enormous cost of government.

Now I surf the web and sequester carbon in my large central California country lot.

Only rich people can afford to be individualists

A blanket statement like that is not going to get you very far. My father, who grew up dirt-poor in the coal mining/fishing Maritime Provinces of Canada during the depression was the strongest individualist I’ve known. He joined the Merchant Marine at age 16 during WWII and ended up in the US Army where he made a career as an NCO. I’m sure many of the readers here have similar stories.

He was white though – I guess that made all the difference! (But wait, what about all those black kids I grew up with on base who shared similar stories…)

Very nice. Of course you have attacked one of the main planks of modern “liberalism”, in stating that you are who you are based on who you are not based on where you come from, so I am shocked that you’ve been scoffed at as little as you have.

My experience with friends is that once you get past just the top 1% in an IQ distribution, class (inside a Western Democracy, US in Particular) becomes _almost_ irrelevant. However, genetics being what it is, there are an awful lot fewer poor kids (with lucky genes) with high IQs than rich ones whose parents used their brains to get rich.

I didn’t read The Bell Curve closely enough to remember if there were any studies showing that childhood IQ makes 47x the difference in adult-life than does class. Of course, even if there were, no one would read or believe them.

And they do. In absolute numbers, most “working class” kids do grow up having achieved success – maybe not having reached “upper middle class” but only because that is defined in a relative sense – eg not everyone can be “above average”. The middle class kids also must end life successful.

You’re missing the point. Of course the vast majority of people care more about their friends and relatives than about complete strangers, and there’s nothing wrong with that. But among strangers, there’s no reason to have any special affection for those who happen to have been born in the same country. Why should I care more about some stranger born in New York City than about some stranger born in Mexico City?

Matt: People with high grades and test scores generally don’t become tradesmen or go to third rate state schools. Class issues are money issues, there’s no difference.

One cannot choose which family to be born into. But we are best off in a society which allows us to get beyond the circumstances of our birth.

In a socialist country with collectiviost ideology, one can never get beyoind the very limited freedoms allowed. Everyone has the right to be equally poor, miserable and enslaved.

In a big welfare state country, everyone has an equal chance to be underemployed or unemployed or wait many years for a union job which they will then have to keep forver for fear of never getting another – they can send their kids to school since everyone can go to school but there are no choices regarding school and when they get out of school they will face the same job market you face. You cannot give your kids a better life – the state will give them the same life that you have.

In this country, we have the freedom to do better for ourselves. Many people have stories about their limited resources, how their parents never went to school, they were poor immigrants or were born into a poor family, yet they dreamt of sending their children to college and of making a better life for their family. They work hard and are able to do so: the kids become a lawyer or a doctor, then they send their kids off to get a PhD or to become an artist or to build a business empire – whatever they want. This is still easier to do in America than anywhere else on Earth. The possibilities are still endless.

Interesting autobiography. You make a convincing case for the importance of individual motivation. However, you would have been less likely to have been selected into ability-selected classes if you were raised in a family who spoke sub-standard English or had poor numeracy skills. Public schools in all but upper and upper-middle class neighborhoods tend to have few spaces available for advanced-track courses. And many strong students find out too late about the existence of AP tests and other important competitive strategies. It is not impossible to become academically or professionally successful without an upper-middle class background, but the process is more difficult and the pathway is usually much less efficient unless good peers/mentors are found. In some places they are scarce.

I’m an atheist despite sixteen years of my mother’s Catholic indoctrination.

I’m also an atheist despite a similar amount of Lutheran indoctrination and I don’t think it has anything to do with some kind of natural stubbornness at all. In fact I’m more likely to think of it as a consequence of my minister father’s technophilia that caused him to seek harmony between science and religion (eg “archeology supports the old testament, science supports the Flood with a vapor canopy theory”) and my mother’s determination to be proud of us no matter what we became. But it sounds like your identity is wrapped up in being a self-made man.

There must be many unseen barriers to realize their potential. Another point: You think the only place for a person like you is in America. You think the rest of the world is a horrible place to be. In general terms, you are right. I am not an American (but Israeli) and think there is (intellectually exciting) life outside America. Some humility would have been in place.

First, maybe it is not only the environment, but also breeding genetics? Perhaps breeding among unskilled poor labourers produces exactly that, except some genetic deviations. So you see, we won’t want to go down THAT way, because it might bring up fantasies about social-engineering. Instead I think that the US is better in social-terms than f.e. Germany, where low class kids are almost restricted to serve the life their upbringing has destined for them…

Also, I must say, as a German that intellectually, Germany is a waste land and most of Western Europe, too. So, yes, I regard the US as a part of the world worth living in, but I rather more recommend countries where state-run regulatory institutions and laws aren’t yet imposed on its citizens.

Last weeks edition of “the economist” had a popular article of some recent research on social mobility. It is not higher in the US compared to most european countries. Rather, it is the highest in the social welfare countries of northern europe.

And the world isn’t always so black and white. For example, northern european countries with their large social welfare state have private schools and a voucher program where kids (or their parents) can choose the school of their wish. This is, if I understands the debate in the US correctly, seen as a very hard reform to implement. Still, the “socialists” in some european countries have done it.

My apologies to be so harsh, but this is nauseatingly self-flattering tripe. Do you realize that (statistically speaking) more than 50% of your PhD classmates at Princeton had at least one parent with a PhD? That more than 95% of them had at least one parent with four years of college? Heck, when I did my econ PhD at Harvard I was struck by the fact that I was the only one in the entire class whose parents had not been to college (my parents were quite well-off, so no complaints).

You should really think a little harder about this and realize that with very high likelihood you would never have gotten a PhD at Princeton if your parents hadn’t already been overeducated and wealthy. You are unfortunately confirming the stereotype that libertarians are all about re-defining their good luck as merit.

From what I’ve seen, the standard function of class autobiography is to make middle- and upper-class authors feel guilty, and the lower- and working-class authors feel resentful.

That exactly is the point Bryan and you ought to show some gratitude to those that helped you get that far.

I will always look back at my life and ask what if my Dad or Mum had been to College ? (My Mum is an elementary school teacher and my Dad was a garbage collector till death) Or what if I was born White ? (I am Black) What is I was born American ? (I am Kenyan – A country in Eastern Africa)

I look back at all the kids who grew up in my neighbourhood and how intelligent some were (better than me in class) considering where they are today and the opportunities they could not get because of circumstances beyond their control. How can you assume what you have and claim you got it all on your own ?

I cant help but look at all upper-class white males I have met and really question how they got what they got purely on merit.

I am now an economics student at LSE. 4 years after my peers have graduated all because I couldnt afford to raise college fees after high school. How can I assume/claim it wont affect my life ?

IQ is not all, it is not even important. But lack of humility is a cardinal sin, and your soul will sweat and roast, Brian. In the fifties, the Communist Government of Hungary held countrywide IQ test in the schools, to identify high IQ promising children of true proletarian background. The Rakosi government needed people of this kind for its Communist legitimacy. My parents were politically reliable but my grandparents had been rich merchants, a very big problem for us in those times. Anyway, I was so salient and had such musical talents (I lost them in the meanwhile) that I was sent to the Gorkiy school in the Liget. Our class was 70 – 80% Jewish. I well remember a very blond skinny boy in the first raw, very shy and quiet, we had a special consideration for him, as he was truely from poor peasant family background. He must have been of high IQ, but he felt always uneasy in class, and one day he disappeared. We all protected him, as we believed that proletarians were chosen by history. But he couldnt cope. Conclusion: Somebody give a box to that unbearable four-eye child that thinks he is something.

I have had to argue this point so many times that I wrote it up in a short commentary article on my site. What I was discussing was not “social mobility” as measured in those studies. Being born poor and finding the American dream, retiring finally from a job that makes 75k/year after sending your kids to college – that is not counted as mobility in those studies.

Oh look, the elite libertarian economists are talking about class.

And guess what? They conclude — with a sample size of one — that it doesn’t matter for life outcomes.

Yep, total coincidence they grew up in happy households with educated parents with good habits and lots of cultural capital. Their success is due to high IQ, folks. It’s all due to merit, honest.

Come on. Is anyone really surprised by this self-deceptive tripe?

I wish I was privilaged enough to be able to share my class history. The great paradox of the “class autobiography” is that the only ones with the luxury of publicly sharing their pasts are those with the privilage of job tenture — a perk enjoyed by elites like Dr. Kaplan — or those with boring and innocuous pasts.

I’m a professional economist myself — one who coincidentially gets paid to defend the free market. But for god’s sake, I don’t try to justify my political views on the absurd grounds that class is irrelevant.

After being professionally snubbed time and time again by rich kids from Brown and Yale and even elitist Harvard assholes like Yglesias — kids with half my IQ whose sense of superiority rested on sailing and vacationing in the Hamptons rather than their ability to work a differential equation or write good copy — I know better. And so should you.

Congratulations Dr. Caplan, and all your self-righteous colleagues, for your social success. But don’t think for a minute that you’re fooling the rest of us. I hate to break this to you, but we don’t admire you. We feel sorry for you. Your self-deception is giving free-market economics a bad name.

Back in my childhood, I feel as if I was living life while being contained within a cage. I was born in Roswell which is 30 minutes north of Atlanta, GA. I had three older siblings and three younger siblings who captured the majority of my mother’s time and a work alcoholic father, caught up in a capitalistic engineering job playing the hunter/gatherer roll, my dad was never around and never attending any of my games, concerts, etc. As seen in the structural-functional theory as it relates to gender, my mother imitated to societies patriarchy views because during the seventies sexism dictated a woman’s place within society. We all attended public school and went without my father to the Baptist church while being forced-fed the same ideals and traditions that where instilled and passed down through my grandparents on both sides of my family. I grew up in what we now consider as a middle-class society and had a very narrow view of the world or the discrimination others endured. My family educational values were dictated through threats for nonconformity in my family to include occasional physical punishment that would be considered deviant behavior in today’s world.

Getting older through my teen years and trying to escape the shadows of my three older and three younger siblings, I forged the wrong path academically, while looking for acceptance from people my own age which usually resulted with hanging with the wrong people. I luckily developed good work ethic and habits because my father insisted we all work while school was out during the summer, so we would stay out of trouble and learn about how the economy worked. Upon barley completing high school. I met my now wife right after high school and soon after we met we moved into together and got pregnant with our first child. It was at that point we decided to get married and travel a little bit before we had the baby.

During our new travels, events, meetings, throughout the world really opened my eyes to the gender, spiritual, and cultural discrimination people come across. These views and encounters I experienced further fixed in me that if I wanted more out of life for myself, or for that matter my family later in life, I would have to get into a blue-collar job, so I won’t have as many delays, trials, and troubles. I wanted to make sure I achieved success from commitment, blood, sweat, and tears. My wife of thirteen years who chose the gender roles of her own mother and of my mother in working from the home, raising our children. The was the best choice for our family because we felt that someone else raising our children wasn’t the best option for them. Even with all the feministic controversy my wife chose the more liberal approach. While raising our three girls and two boys, me coaching or attending all sporting activities, karate tournaments, boy scout trips and meetings. I have not become my father. I was able to play the hunter/gather role in providing for my family, while playing a very important role in shaping our children to be able to handle what challenges and opportunities the world has to offer them.

After twelve years I decided to go back to school to get my bachelor’s in business administration. Since being in school, this new journey and opportunity to further my career it has allowed me to expand my educational knowledge. It opened my eyes to the many captivating cultures and diversified ways in which people live, view and cherish their culture and social norms. I have a new respect for individuals and their challenges when dealing with race, and color issues, these life experiences and perceptions have dictated and even altered their general and cultural beliefs creating a world very different from what I have perceived. The saying that with age comes wisdom, is very important along with my family and life experiences in creating the individual I am today.

My name is Humayun Rauf and I’m born in Karachi, Pakistan. I have been living in Houston for almost three years and currently staying at Cambridge Oaks which is walking distance to University of Houston main campus. Starting from fall, I’ll be starting my junior year and will be deciding what major is best for me to pursue. Also, I’m working almost full-time at the graduate school office and will be continuing to work until I’m able to find an internship in a top-rated company. In the summer, I’m involved in a peer advising program at the International Schools and Scholars Office. Secondly, it was a tough time for me to get used to the new culture and make friends. I grew up in what is considered middle to lower class society and had a very narrow and sheltered view or the world outside or the discrimination others endured. My family, religious and educational values were dictated through threats for nonconformity in my family to include occasional physical punishment that would be considered deviant behavior by today’s standards, potentially resulting in criminal charges.

To further monopolize more of my mothers’ time, she felt it necessary to play her maternal roll and had a fifth child nine years later. (TCO 1, 2, 3, 4,5) Growing older through my adolescent and teen years and trying to escape the shadows of three older brothers and a younger sister, I forged the wrong path academically, while looking for acceptance from peers which usually resulted with hanging with the wrong crowd. I fortunately developed good work ethic and habits because my father insisted we all work during the summer months to minimize the possibility of, kids being kids, and me getting into trouble. Upon graduating high school, by the skin of my teeth, I entered the Air Force. The Air Force hierarchy and structure reinforced and further instilled society’s views of conformity through rules and regulations. Protocols such as, the “Military Chain of Command”, allowed me to mature and changed my very sheltered views of society altering my perspective of society both national and globally. (TCO 3,4,5,6)

My new travels, endeavors and encounters, throughout the world, during my military years opened my eyes to the gender, religious and racial discrimination people encounter. These views and encounters I experienced further engrained in me that if I wanted more out of life for myself, or for that matter my family later in life, I would have to have my own business. In doing this it, would afford me the ability to prosper in a capitalistic society and allow me opportunities known to people living in the upper-middle to upper class. After starting my own business in the late 90’s, and after several years of setbacks, trials, and tribulations, I feel I have achieved success. I have still remained a blue-collar worker and I believe I have achieved success from dedication, blood, sweat, and tears, not to mention countless hours of hard work but never at the cost of my family, as in the case of my childhood upbringing. ( TCO 1,4,6)

I currently have a wife of over twenty years who chose the gender role of her own mother and of my mother in working from the home, raising our children. This was the right choice for our family because we wanted more for our children and felt that someone else raising our children wasn’t the best option for them. . Even with all the feministic controversy in the twenty-first century my wife chose the more liberal approach. While raising our three boys and me coaching or attending all sporting activities I escaped the views and actions my father instilled in me. I was able to play the hunter/gather role in providing for my family, while playing a very important and vital role in shaping and cultivating our children to be able to handle what challenges and opportunities the world has to offer them. (TCO 7,8) Finally, after twenty some years of business and reenlisting in the Air Force, I am fortunate enough to have the opportunity to further my education, something that wasn’t an important priority in previous years.

Since embarking on this new adventure and opportunity to further my career it has allowed me to expand my educational knowledge and know how. It opened my eyes to the many fascinating cultures and diversified ways in which people live, view and cherish their culture and social norms. Unfortunately, with the good there is always bad and I have a new respect for individuals and their challenges when dealing with race, color and creed issues. These life experiences and perceptions have dictated and even altered their societal and cultural beliefs creating a world very different from what I have perceived. The adage that “with age comes wisdom”, I feel is very important along with my family and life experiences in creating the individual I am today. This Sociology course has allotted me the opportunity to reflect on how truly influential these aspects were in shaping the person I am and are continually reinforcing my views with each day that I grow. Therefore, my experiences and personal engagements have played an elemental role in shaping and dictating my destiny. They have also prepared me to be a representation of a typical student at ISU because the institution makes a perfect environment for me to propagate my interest in all perspectives.

The decisions made in life are influenced by various entities. One of the biggest forces that influence the decisions is the social position of an individual. The social position dictates the formation of the cultural perspectives that are elemental to life and other entities. These cultural guidelines also dictate the moves an individual takes because of the influenced decision that have to be consistent with the expectations of the social environment.

Therefore, if I were born in a different cultural environment, my socialization could have been completely different from my present life. This is because my views for different aspects of life could have been different, and I could be acting according to the expectation and desires of that social status. Therefore, my desires and expectation of life would be different because I could exist in a different social class and setup. Therefore, my enrollment at ISU would have changed, and perhaps I would be in an institution associated with the social class.

This class has assisted me in the progression of various aspects associated with my social entities. This is because the class has exposed to numerous and critical operation of major social issues which has been essential to enhancing the level of my critical thinking and creativity. Before taking this Sociology class, I did not realize how much my life experiences and life chances are greatly influenced by many complex sociological factors. I realize now that using my sociological imagination allows me to connect my personal experiences, behaviors, and attitudes to the larger social structure. Some of the sociological themes that manifest in my life are how gender role socialization, resocialization, and social inequalities have played a role in contributing to my sociological autobiography.

According to Ferris & Stein (2014), gender role socialization is the process in which a person becomes masculine or feminine. Branching from the constructionist views on gender, what is considered feminine or masculine are socially constructed labels linked to behaviors based on the social context in which a person lives encompassing their society, its culture, and time period. By possessing a sociological imagination, an individual can understand that gender differences are not solely defined by inherent feminine or masculine behaviors or traits. My primary agent of socialization is my family that played a major part in my gender role socialization. Chris Cooley’s looking-glass self theory suggests that self concept develops from “how we imagine others perceive us and the feelings of ourselves based on the perceived judgments of others” (Ferris & Stein, 2014.)

Parents can act as a reflection to their children where their appraisals can contribute to their child’s sense of self. As a child, my parents enjoyed dressing me up in fancy dresses with most of my wardrobe comprising of the color pink, which in American culture, is a color usually associated as an appropriate color for girls. My parent’s positive reactions reinforced in me even as an adult, that dressing up in certain colors and styles are favorable and that others will perceive me as a “pretty girl.” Interactionist theories argue that gender norms are reinforced through face-to-face interactions. From a very young age, I learned and internalized gendered behaviors from my parents and siblings through social learning. American society encourages gender-stereotyped behaviors for females and males as accepted norms.

My gender influenced the type of games I grew up playing and the friends I was allowed to have. All the toys I received growing up were gender-stereotyped toys for girls such as Barbie dolls and princess-themed products. As the oldest sibling with two younger brothers, from an early age, I was not allowed to play with boys outside my family nor were my brothers allowed to play “roughly” with me because I was a girl. I believe because of social learning, I am able to understand why I have come it to find it difficult to watch when my son gets tackled in football or being open to the idea of my daughter participating in this sport, indicative of how pervasive gender is in my family life and American society in general (Ferris & Stein, 2014.)

Another important sociological theme is resocialization. Resocialization is the process of transitioning in life with the replacement of new cultural knowledge that discourage previous social norms and values. I can relate this theme to such as my experience transitioning to the role and status of a mother and wife. The ideal culture of America suggests that the course of life should follow along the lines of graduating high school, go to college to obtain a degree, get married, and have children, respectively. The ideal culture of America greatly influenced my parents to instill in me to pursue such a similar timeline of milestones to earn the achieved status of mother and wife. It is also during these years, my peers played a major role as an agent of socialization because I wanted to fit in and follow the norms and values in order to reach these statuses and roles. Prior to marriage, I had conformed to my social in-group by aligning my social calendar with theirs and doing similar hobbies such as going to the dance night clubs, all in order to avoid negative sanctions.

Based on a functionalist’s view, conformity is important for the smooth functioning of society to promote social cohesion and solidarity where everyone works together with shared norms and values. However, once I became someone’s wife, I had to conform to a whole set of new norms and values which included aligning my schedule with my husbands, setting up joint bank accounts, adopting my husband’s last name, being monogamous with only my husband “til death do us part,” and trying to start a family. I could not continue following my previous in-group’s behaviors and attitudes in order to be the ideal wife in America’s culture. Based on a functionalist view, American contemporary society supports that marriage is the foundation of a family and an important social institution to the smooth functioning of society.

In addition, transitioning to the role and status of a mother was yet another layer to my self identity. Upon finding out I was pregnant, I realized I had to replace even more beliefs and behaviors in order to prepare myself and my husband to be ideal parents of American culture. My self development is the total sum of my individual interactions with society and vice versa, which brings to thought who “I” am. Based on the sociological view of dramaturgy, I realized that I am questioning who “I” really am, since in a way, I act as an actor as my behaviors and mannerisms can vary depending on the social situation to please the generalized other. I understand that I had to be resocialized and act according given the social context as I took on the role and status of mother and wife. I also believe that impression management assisted me to adapt and learn the many aspects of our individual self within a society.

There are many social inequalities that addresses the stratification within a society impacting who gets what, and how and why they do. Some of the social factors that are typically linked to social inequalities are social class and race. These social factors have played an influential role in my life. First of all, my social class has contributed to shaping my sociological autobiography. According the Ferris & Stein’s (2014) U.S. Social Class Ladder, I grew up in a family that would be considered “middle class,” and even later in life, I am still in the middle class. This supports the postmodernism perspective on social reproduction according to sociologist Pierre Bourdieu (Ferris & Stein, 2014) which explains that social class typically passes down from one generation to the nest and remains relatively stable.

Although, I did benefit as an adult because I added value to my cultural capital gained from my parents by surpassing my parents educational achievements. I was able to obtain a four year college degree and earn a stable low-level management position at my current employment. This concepts makes me wonder if this postmodernist perspective may help explain why some of my coworkers who are at a much lower level hierarchy at work are unable to experience social class mobility. Moreover, race is a social construct proven to not be genetic based, but racism still exists. Race differs from ethnicity because according to Ferris & Stein (2014), it is a “socially defined category based on real or perceived biological differences between groups of people.” The social phenomenon of white privilege has made it more advantageous or favorable to being white, which affects everyone.

Therefore, racial inequality is a prevailing social concept that offers people different access to opportunities and resources. I am a product of miscegenation, because my race is a mixture of Lebanese, English, and Pakistani ancestry. During my childhood years, I attended a private all girl Catholic school where more than 90% of the students were white. It wasn’t until a school event in the 3rd grade when my parents came to school with me, did I realize how my parents and my own “biological” differences affected my embodied identity. Apparently, my classmates had assumed I was white because I had many “white” features such as brown hair, fair skin and light eyes, but they realized that my parents did not look more “white” like me.

My parents had a darker skin tone, dark hair, and deep brown eyes. Some students were initially confused and shocked when I told them my race (after they asked), and after that incident, a rumor spread that I was adopted just because I did not look enough like my parents. This made me feel out of place and isolated, realizing that the way I look impacted how I am perceived by others. This experience fits the symbolic interactionist perspective, where this approach believes that race is a part of identity that is created through interactions on a micro-level. I unintentionally experienced racial passing, where my physical appearances had made others believe I was “white.” However, the social context in which we live is not based solely on either of these social factors but rather our life chances are one of intersectionality, where multiple and complicated social factors all affect our lived experiences at once.

As you can see, there are many sociological themes including gender role socialization, resocialization, and social inequalities that have played a significant role in my own life. I can appreciate that my sociological imagination has allowed me to connect my personal experiences, behaviors, and attitudes to the larger social structure. Although my Sociology class comes to an end, I will continue to incorporate a sociological imagination to understand how complex social factors have influenced my life experiences and contribute to shaping my sociological autobiography.

I came into the sociological world on 19th September 1995, with a long and complicated birth of caesarian. My life started with a large scream, the doctors and nurses in charge, immediately sorted my gender. The doctors looked at me and immediately pronounced me a baby boy. This gender assortment then placed me into the social label that I had no influence in, as a social human being I therefore appreciate the biological concepts and hence I don't blame any human being of their social gender. Since the very day I was pronounced a boy, my parents have been treating in consideration of being a boy. My parents could buy me toys such as cars and robots, but not kitchen staffs. The car toys then began defining my life; I could envision myself making cars, which nowadays I see to be men oriented careers. Now I understand why my sister could play with the dolls hair and my mum's hairs because, I nowadays see most hair dresser to be women. All the staffs we are introduced in our tender age define what we live interacting with. The staffs I handled deprived me the staffs that are believed to be girlish and gave me what are believed to be masculine like toy cars. Gender role socialization is the gradual process in which an individual becomes either famine or masculine. (Ferris & Stein, 2014)

Ethnicity and Race differs a little bit, race is a socially defined category linked on perceived biological contrast between groups of people. The social phenomenon of being a white comes with certain challenges and merits, it affects anyone around. Racial inequality is an existing social concept that avails individual's different opportunities and resources. I was conceived from miscegeny, my parents are a mixture of English and Indian ancestry. When I was young in my tender ages the disparity was not conspicuous and therefore everyone knew that I was pure white. I went to a private boy's school that was populated with 85 percent white students; I was included in the list. We did the end year evaluation text and our parents came to school help grace the closing event. Everything was well with me in school, till some of my good friends saw my parents, the latter affected my stay in high school life the following years. My classmates believed that I was a white since I had light skin, brown hair and light eyes. The features never featured in both my parents since one was white and my mum was a middle east and for that I was never conforming to them. My mum had a dark skin color; she had deep brown eyes and, dark hair. My very good friends were seriously mesmerized when they saw my parents and for that reason I had to break their silence by telling them that I was not pure white. Some of my friends who were racists began spreading rumor that I was an adopted son and for that I was playing them prank. Unfortunately I lost those good friends of mine because since them they kept on ignoring my presence. This happening changed my perceptions of viewing people. This event symbolizes interactionist perceptions, which implies that human identity sometimes goes through the race. The identity in relation to the race begins on a micro-level. I unknowingly underwent racial passing meaning that my phenotypic morphology shaped the perceptive of my friends such that they saw me white yet I was not. Our lives are not shaped on social context but instead on social factors, due to these social factors the events in our lives happen are intersectionalities. Intersectionalities imply that several sophisticated social factors affect our life experiences.

Social Class is a social inequality that discourse the formation within a society influencing what a person gets and how to get it. Social factor that correlates with social inequality is the social class. This social factor has impacted both positively and negatively in many ways. First and for more my social autobiography has been shaped by my social class. According to the United State of America social class ladder, I can proudly say that I have been natured in the so called middle class family, and am foreseeing my life remaining in middle social class future due to the middle social class factors orbiting around my day to day life activities. This idea of stagnating in one social class due to where we were born is linked to postmodernism perspective social reproduction as per Pierre Bourdieu a sociologist. Bourdieu explains that social is hereditary and is passed from one generation to the other. The only benefit I claim from social class is that I have enriched my culture and this makes my parents happy. The only challenge I am projecting is that I will have middle class education in my entire life and even get a middle class job. This concept of postmodernist perspective will make me explain to my juniors, who are in lower hierarchy of job description, how the concepts have shaped our environment.

Religion is social factor that plays a role in shaping lives of individual. Alternative region shapes the attitude and believe in which people view things that happen in day to day activity. Just like race and ethnicity, region is another social factor that bares negativity and positivity in our lives today. I was born and raised in a religious family. I have grown in church as my religion since I was born, but is still wonder my duties in religion each and every day since it gets complicated each and every day I try to understand it better. Being a kid raised within the doctrines of church, the church has played a critical role of shaping my culture, my feelings and my social structures. When I began thinking about culture what cling in my mind is its definition as the doctrines, believes, values, knowledge, language and material objects that humans share in common and are transmitted from one generation to the other.( Croteau & Hoynes, 2013). Of all the aspects of culture I have come to realize that material culture involves the physical structures that are carried by fellow humans into our believes for example, clothing, tools, toys, housing and works of arts. Social structures include church institution for example Cathedral Baptism Church where I spent my life which defined my durable patterns and routines. The church has made me believe that some things are not right and unethical for example murder, stealing and fornication. The church have also deprived me night peer parties and alcohol, it has made me believe they wrong values of life.

Place of birth is another lethal determinant of my sociological environment. Being born in a certain country, county and locality influences several sociological factors in our live today. Born from wedlock of mixed originality I have enjoyed several merits that comes along side it, for instance it has made me know Hindu culture when I travel to my mum's place in India. It has shaped my multilingual skills. I was born in America and therefore I have been influenced by my relatives in India to claim their originality, something that has been traumatizing my brain since then as a result I have realized that place of birth comes' alongside challenges of sociological factors.

Technology has played a key role in depicting a faster revolving world. Through technology I have interacted with very many peers from across the globe. This has been made successful through the existence of social sites like face book and tweeter and many more. I have also been up to date with the trending world issues at a touch of button making me interact with every moment of my life even when am lonely. Technology has also realized that some website and information are distinct for the general public, family, kids and teenagers including the elderly.

How to Write an Essay as a Socio-Autobiography Using Sociological Concepts

Although you're probably familiar with the term "autobiography," "socio-autobiography" is a bit more confusing. However, a "socio-autobiography" is a story you tell about yourself, like an autobiography, that focuses on how your interactions with society have shaped you to be the person you are. Typically, socio-autobiographies are assigned in entry-level sociology classes. They help students understand that sociology is not an abstract science but that it plays an important role in students' daily lives.

Review sociological concepts to include in your paper. Your teacher might provide you a list of concepts that she wants you to consider when writing. If not, become familiar with some of the major sociological concepts, like how sociologists define "sociology," "community," "culture" and "customs." Because conflict is what shapes all stories, also review sociologists' explanations of helpful and harmful consequences of conflict.

Reflect on the concepts listed in step one, considering how they might have affected your personal development. For example, consider whether racial tension in your society shaped how you view people who are different from you or whether a community value of hard work in your neighborhood helped shape your attitude toward academia. Write these reflections -- without worrying about spelling, grammar and if they really make sense -- on a blank word processing document or in a journal.

Reread your reflections and decide which you would like to include in your paper. Create a timeline that maps your story out from the beginning to end. Place each of these events along the timeline. Reread the timeline and determine if there are any unnecessary details you need to remove, or if there are events you need to include to make your story make sense. Add or cross out events on the timeline.

Using the timeline, write your essay with a beginning, middle and end. At the end of the essay, include in your conclusion some reflection about how you view society as shaping or not shaping you as a person. Reread your essay, and include sociological terms when necessary and relevant to meet class requirements.

Introduction

Social class is an age old concept referring to a group of people with similar status, power, influence and wealth. Social class refers to the social stratification of the society based on social, economic and educational status. However, the definition of class is not uniform across the countries and societies. There exist different theories of social class division and its impact on us. The word 'class' derives from the Latin word “classis”. During census people were categorized into different “classis” based on their wealth in ancient Rome. Wealth is still the biggest factor in determining class strata. This essay will highlight different theories of social class and different social factors that differentiate social classes, subsequently touching upon the probable social challenges encountered by someone while moving from one social ladder to another.

Social Class: Theories

Social class models are based on economics, sociology and psychology. Historically the most popular model is the common stratum model that divides society into three simple hierarchy of upper class, middle class and lower or working class. According to this theory, society is divided into different classes based on mainly two factors, economic and social. Apart from the common stratum model, there exists a Marxian class theory proposed by Karl Marx. Marx believed that class is a combination of subjective and objective factors. Objectively, a class shares a common relationship in terms of output. Subjectively, members of a class believe that they share some common interests. This class perception is not only a common feeling of shared interest of one’s own class but it also indicates how the society should be. As per the class theory of Marx, two classes - bourgeoisie and proletariat constitute the major two strata of the social class. Bourgeoisies are the wealthy section of a society controlling power through money. Proletariats are laborers who depend on bourgeoisies to earn money by selling labor. Marx explained in his theory about how ultimately bourgeoisies would be eliminated from the society and all would turn equal. Marx envisions a classless society in which there will be no class, no state and no need for money and everything will be shared and the society will run based on needs and not based on profits. Max Weber was a 19th century German philosopher and sociologist who presented another class theory. Weber’s theory is known as ‘Three component theory of stratification’. According to Weber, society is not stratified on the basis of economic status alone; it is also dependent on status and power. In Weber’s definition class or economic position definitely creates social strata but it is not the only factor. Status is another factor creating divide in the society. For Example, poets or saints may not be rich but they enjoy very high status or social class in the society. Power is another factor dividing society into different classes. For example, a person working in FBI may not be affluent monetary wise but he has immense power giving him a higher status in the society.

Modern Day Class Strata

In modern day world, social class stratification is based on the common three stratum model. This model divides the society into three strata - the upper class, middle class and lower class. Upper class is composed of people who are born wealthy or who are wealthy through inheritance or both. In most of the countries the upper class is determined by wealth. For example, in underdeveloped countries and developing countries like India, China, Kenya, Egypt and others a financially wealthy person always belongs to the upper class. The same is applicable in most of the developed countries as well. However, in some countries only people born into high society or aristocratic bloodlines are deemed as members of the upper class. Those who have amassed wealth through business or commercial activity are viewed as nouveau riche (New Charter University). This is particularly apparent in Britain where the concept of royal family and royal blood decides the upper or royal class. The third kinds of people considered to be upper class are politicians. In most of the countries, politicians are vested with huge power which gives them a social status one notch above the rest. Middle Class is the most dynamic among all class definitions. The definition of this class category changes with changing society and changing time. The common definition is that middle class are those people working on behalf of the owners to control and manage the laborers and they also work in highly skilled areas. Middle class definition of US is very broad and includes people who in many other societies will be considered lower class. The middle class concept in developed societies is broadening as more and more labor intensive work is now being outsourced to developing countries with only high end works being retained in developed countries. Middle class population is educated and highly skilled and in most of the cases earns enough money to live a decent life with secure future. Depending on the annual income bracket ranging from $50,000 to $199,999, American middle class is segmented into upper and lower middle class with upper middle class potentially earning between the range of $150,000 to $199,000 and lower middle class earning within the range of $50,000 to $74,999 (New Charter University). Upper middle class people are usually graduates with professional degrees practicing professions like law, banking, corporate sector, finance, engineering and other occupations. Lower middle class people are also highly educated involved in white-collar professions of teaching, nursing and the like. Lower class also known as the working class are the people working in blue-collar low paying jobs in factories, construction sites, restaurants and clerical positions. They have little or no economic security as they always live in the fear of losing their jobs. They don't have adequate technological expertise like the middle class to work in better paying jobs.

Changing Social Class: Challenges

All of us are born into some social strata of the society and cultural setting. Based on the class we receive education, healthcare, community and religious influences. This brings in some common behavioral pattern inside us knowingly or unknowingly. Most of us are born and die in the same social class (AAAS). People born in lower class have every possibility that they will also die poor. People born in the upper or middle classes are most likely to die as same. Only an individual or a group of individuals can move up the social ladder through massive individual or social initiative. As we have seen in the previous section that the main difference between a lower class person and an upper class person is the special skill and knowledge. This can be achieved through better education. Lower class people cannot move into the middle class strata of the society because for better education often money is required which they do not have. This barrier can be minimized by making education more affordable to lower class. We have seen more people moving into middle class where the basic education is same for all and is affordable by all. The US is one of the great examples of a society which has decreased its lower class by making basic education available to all. Moving into upper class from middle class is not that easy. The main difference between a upper class and middle class person is money. The main three things determining the upper class are wealth, high born and power. Middle class people cannot be high born and hence in order to acquire the status of upper class they have to either attain power or money. Power can be achieved by getting into positions of importance like Member of Parliament or minister of local, state or central government. Money can be achieved by getting into business ventures. On the other hand, getting down to the bottom of the social ladder seems to be an easier process. Upper class people who are born amidst wealth and power may lose all of it if they maintain an extravagant lifestyle and make injudicious investments.

Social class is an old concept that determines the social stratification existing in a society on the basis of economic position, social status and educational qualification. There are different theories of social class like common stratum model, Marxian class theory and Weber's three component theory of stratification. In today's world social class stratification relies on the common three stratum model which divides society into three distinct sections - upper class, middle class and lower class. Usually, based on the social setting and the availability of resources for learning skill and education, people born into each specific class die the same as they were born into. But since the difference between a middle class and lower class is the difference in education and skill, if education can be made affordable to all then chances of lower class people going one notch up the social ladder to middle class position are higher, but the same is not true for people aspiring to reach the upper class position because then they have to earn enough money and power to earn high status. Compared to difficulty in social climb, it is lot easier for one to climb down the social strata. A rich person can turn poor if he does no work and wastes money making bad investments.
