Growing up, my family always stuck together. My parents put my siblings and me first all the time. They sincerely care about us. If the food were to run low, they would sacrifice eating to feed us. That’s how much their unconditional love is for us. I believe that the love and care my parents gave me has shaped me to be caring toward others. My parents supported and motivated me when I was unable to do it for myself. I am grateful for their constant support, and I know that whenever it comes to events or emergencies, they would put aside time and effort to be there.

Life with my siblings was incredibly frustrating but also entirely entertaining. Fighting over silly things, always blaming one another, yelling about who gets to watch their TV show first. We have created a long list of hilarious stories. For example, when my sister Crystal tricked me into taking a bite of raw onion when I was about Five. Also, when my brother cut a piece of my sister’s hair. From fighting over the remote to having each other’s backs when trying to sneak out. I would compare my family to the movie “Home Alone” because of how big their family is and how the siblings hate but love each other, and the parents will do anything for their children but discipline them when they have to. My family is precisely like that. Kevin, the main character, is similar to me when I was a child, I was irritating, and the youngest in our family. Even though we had tough times, we were able to forget and move on. Just like the boy in home alone was able to forgive his family for leaving him alone.

The influence of family traditions has affected my life enormously. What I am today and what I will become in the future involves the support and affection of my family. As a rule, family traditions are important in the life of each family and each family member. The maintenance of family traditions and conveying family history from one member to another is exactly what makes the family the solid unit, whose members feel close relations and unity. In this regard, I can refer to the experience of my own family, which like any other family has its traditions and history, which shape views and values of each family member.

In fact, family traditions and cultural legacy affects consistently individual self identification. Each family member is vulnerable to the impact of family traditions and cultural legacy since the early days of his or her life (Walker, 181). People cannot live in isolation from their family. As a rule, they start their life in the family and grow up in the family environment. Naturally, in such a situation, they are vulnerable to the impact of family. More important, they learn key values from the family and steadily individuals adapt those values to the extent that those values become their individual values. Anyway, personal views of family members are affected consistently by family values and traditions.

In this regard, I can refer to the experience of my family and my personal experience. My family has its own traditions which we observe and which are extremely important for us. For instance, if a family member is in trouble, we always help each other. The entire family unites its efforts to help the family member in trouble. This mutual support is very important for our family members but we do not consider that mutual support as something unusual. In stark contrast, we take the mutual support of family members for granted. Even when we are apart and have not seen each other for years, we will definitely help each other just because we are the family.

We learn our family values and how they were shaped from the history of our family. The history of our family is shared between its members from the elder generation to the younger. For instance, I recall my grandfather telling me about his life and the life of his parents. His wartime stories were particularly interesting for me because he participated in World War II and that was really hard time for our family. Also I recall his stories about the Great Depression, when our family was on the edge of survival. Definitely, I would tell the history of my family to my children and grandchildren just like grandfather did. In such a way, the process of sharing history of our family occurs, as the history is conveyed from an elderly family member to a younger one.

Each family member learns to respect our family history since early childhood. We learn to respect values of our family and its traditions. In the course of education of each individual family member, he or she learns basic family values, while the family history helps him or her to understand how those traditions and values were shaped and why he or she should respect them. For instance, as I learned the history of my family life in the time of Great Depression, I accustomed to take financial difficulties easy as provisional problems because I am certain that my family will help me as well as I will help my family and altogether we will stumble through the hardest time.

However, the family history and values go far beyond the regular actions we perform or stories we tell each other or recall together (Meinke, 156). In fact, the family history and values are uniting factors that make our family members really close to each other. Our family history is our past and our values have been conveyed from parents to children, generation after generation.

In fact, our family history and values make us feel being members of our unique but small community. For instance, achievements of my ancestors make me proud that I am a member of my family and I want to make my children and grandchildren to be proud of me. The family history and traditions and family values help people to feel being members of the small community – their family. However, this community is probably the most important in their life.

The maintenance of our family traditions and values is very important for family members because it helps our family to survive in hardest times. People attempt to convey their family history and family traditions from one generation to another not just because they want to tell each other noteworthy stories (Fierstein, 195). Instead, they want to share common values and respect traditions, which were important for their ancestors.

Thus, taking into account all above mentioned, it is important to place emphasis on the fact that family traditions, history and values are crucial for the formation of an individual cultural identity and personal values and views. The family is small but highly influential community, which people can never ignore.

My family has always had traditions. There are traditions that have been passed down for years and there are traditions that we have just begun. Some traditions may be only celebrated once a year and other traditions may be celebrated weekly or daily.

The Christmas Eve gathering is a tradition in my family that came from my father’s family and his Italian heritage. Every Christmas Eve my father’s family gathers for a fish based meal. We have different kinds of fish which my brother and I help prepare the day before with Grandma and Daddy. Some of which I was scared to try at first but afterwards it’s what I look forward to each year.

My Mom and Dad began a weekly tradition when my brother and I were small. At first we had pizza on Fridays during Lent because we couldn’t eat meat. Then we started having pizza every Friday. This developed into a tradition. We make our own sauce and dough and then everybody gets to choose toppings for 1/4th of the 2 pizzas. I normally have pepperoni pizza. If we don’t have pizza on Friday we miss it all week until the next Friday.

Some people may not think eating dinner together is a tradition but I do. It’s a daily tradition at my house. My Mom and Dad grew up eating dinner together with their families. Now we eat together every night even with a busy schedule. Sometimes we only eat half of our meal together but we do whatever is possible to try to spend time together at the dinner table. Studies show that eating together can actually raise your grades. We talk, laugh, and share things about our day in our daily tradition.

I began to believe in family traditions when I was young. I want to keep the traditions going that we have and make new ones. They keep me full, each year, each week , each day. Expecting to taste, feel and experience my family traditions.

In our family, there are several cultures and traditions that play a very important role in defining our family values and cultures. These traditions and cultures have been passed to our parents from our grandparents.

The two most vivid cultural patterns that are present in our family have been inherited by our parents from the blending of the culture from my maternal grandparents and my fraternal grandparents.

The cultural patterns

Every Sunday, our father always prepares supper for the family and he makes sure that we eat together as one family.

This tradition has been there in our family for a long period and helps us to bond together as a family unit.

Every night on the eve of my birthday or that of my siblings, our parents usually sneaks into our bed room and fills it with balloons which are stuffed with money and toys. My father usually writes several bunches of poems and leaves the written poems on our table.

When we wake up in the morning, our mother usually prepares for us a birthday morning cake which we enjoy together as a family as we read the bunch of poems.

Different roles in upholding the traditions

During our Sunday’s family dinner/supper, my parents dwells on teaching us on the way forward in regards to behaviour and especially the use of courteous words such as ‘please’ and ‘thank you’. They discourage talking when the mouth is full as well as placing of the elbows on the table.

Also during this time, my parents taught us the developmental skills like literacy skills when story telling during family conversations. During these conversations, my parents would learn more on our attitudes and interests. From these meals, my parents gauge our moods and needs thus helping us solve our problems in the end. My parents oversee the family to ensure that everybody attends to maintain the unity and stability in the family.

The dinner table or birthday party is a significant place for socialization especially for the children. These act as prime setting for socialization regarding the norms and rules on values of the family and the acceptable behaviour. From the nutritional perspective, the children master what is considered acceptable; basically the foods and non-food materials.

From the family dinners and birthdays, my siblings and I have discovered manners and behaviour restraints that the wider world requires. Through conversations of the family during birthday parties and family dinner, we learned of our parents’ interests and attitudes in relations to the world. We always help our father to prepare for the family dinner on Sundays. As the eldest, I helped my father prepare the foods and especially the desert and vegetables while my other younger siblings have inevitably prepared the table.

As part of our tradition, the family meal is a symbol of a shared family life. On Sunday’s, family supper/dinner acts to bringing us together in the family. This greatly leads to our social well-being at the same time providing predictable structure to our Sundays which is often reassuring especially psychologically. In our family, everybody is involved in this activity and this applies to the buying of food, preparations of food done by my father, making and laying the table, and finally serving of food. With all this participation, it is not a surprise that the provision of this family meal is a classic demonstration that we love and care for our family stability and unity. From the initial stages of shopping to clearing the table, each member of the family participates in this exercise responsibly and this promotes family solidarity.

The Reflection on the Tradition

Though we have a happy family, we also experience our setbacks. At the end of the day, the members of the family who are already exhausted after a busy day at school or work and probably maybe irascible meet for a family meal or party. Hostility may arise perceived at the dinner/party table maybe because of the injustices and behaviour which is unacceptable. Refusal to eat, complaining about bad cooking or lack of appreciation on whatever served on the table are some of the things that can lead to these conflict at the dinning/party table. Therefore, family dinners and birthday parties have many positive virtues that are sometimes fought with strain and negative consequences which greatly depend on the styles of parenting.

As a socially combining role, when we share a meal during birthdays or Sunday dinner, it brings people together in a network of reciprocal commitments and shared social relationships.

As a tradition routine, Sunday family dinner prepared by my father has been most frequent planned ritual activity in our family which usually takes place in our family house.

The family meal and birthday parties in specific have come to represent the dynamics of the family and overtime generations are complaining on its downfall. In the times of change, family meals and parties represented solidity and perhaps the complaint of the lost family may in fact be the response to feared exchange in the arrangements and frameworks of families.

These family traditions still influence me to date. This is due to the fact that they provide a source of identity on top of strengthening the family bond. I believe that the families that engage in frequent traditional practices report stronger relationship and unity than families that haven’t accepted rituals together. I will carry my family traditions in future because I view them as a way of offering comfort and security. This is because our family beliefs and rituals are the cure to the feeling that comes from our world which is fast-paced and ever-changing.

It’s relieving to have a few constants in one’s life. Am also for the idea that these family traditions teach values and this is achieved by for instance through family stories where the value of education, life-long learning and reading is instilled; and through regular family dinners or parties, the centrality of familial togetherness is instilled. With all this in mind, I will definitely carry these traditions in the future.

My home town where I lived half of my life in was in a little country town called Sanger, Texas. Although my older years of growing up I spent them in the city of The Woodlands, Texas. Even though these two places are both in Texas and in the South, there are still many differences in the cultures.
