BAR EXAM RANKINGS
Neither the Florida Supreme Court nor the Bar Examiners ever publicly release how applicants rank on their exam scores compared to other applicants. Some high-scoring applicants will be invited to speak at public induction ceremonies at state appellate courts, but this fact alone in no way indicates that the applicant is the highest scorer on the overall exam or ranked in any particular place or percentile. Applicants, therefore, must avoid making public claims that they ranked in a particular place (1st, 2nd, etc.) or percentile. Applicants invited to speak at a court ceremony may only note that they received the invitation because they were among the higher scorers.
Actual score results from the examination will be provided by the Florida Board of Bar Examiners. For those applicants with portal accounts, the information will be posted to their portal. For applicants without a portal account (accounts created prior to June 26, 2017), the information will be mailed to each applicant's current mailing address, as filed with the Florida Board of Bar Examiners. You will not be able to obtain pass/fail information or actual scores from the Clerk of the Supreme Court of Florida or from the Florida Board of Bar Examiners by phone or email.
PLEASE DO NOT TELEPHONE EITHER AGENCY TO REQUEST SUCH INFORMATION.

How are General Bar Examination grades released? Once the Florida Supreme Court approves the release of examination results, the Court sends a tweet from its authorized Twitter account @flcourts. You will then be able to locate your results on your Florida Board of Bar Examiners applicant portal, as correspondence. The correspondence will contain your examination results, including your examination scores. Additionally the Florida Supreme Court releases General Bar Examination results on their website .
How do I access my examination results on the court’s website? If you cannot access your portal account for any reason, you may click on the link leading to the examination results on the court's website, and scroll until you locate your file number (not your Badge ID number) among the results provided. If you do not know your file number and cannot access your portal account, do not call the board or the Florida Supreme Court, as your file number is never given out over the phone. Please submit a Request to Reset Portal Access via the board's website.
What do I do if I cannot locate my file number on the court's website? If you cannot locate your file number on the court’s website, first make sure that you're using the correct file number; If the file number you are using has a "B" in it, it is an old number and you need to use the file number assigned to you when you converted your student registration and filed an application to take the examination. If you still cannot locate your file number, there will be correspondence in your applicant portal as to why your results are not included among those on the court's website.
Did I pass the examination? You can pass the examination either by the Individual or Overall method. If you did not pass both Part A and Part B individually, but did pass the “Overall” examination, meaning the average of your scores from Part A and Part B was at least 136, then you did successfully complete the General Bar Examination.
Can my essay responses be regraded?
Why was I not “Authorized to be sworn in?" In order to be “Authorized to be Sworn in,” you must pass the General Bar Examination and the MPRE, and your background investigation must be complete. If you have not been authorized to be sworn in, the letter containing your examination results will advise you of the reasons you have not been authorized to take the oath.
Who can administer my oath? If you are authorized to be sworn in, your oath and all information needed to be sworn in will be mailed to you with a letter from the Clerk of the Supreme Court of Florida. You may be sworn in by any judge, notary, or other person authorized to administer oaths of office. It is not necessary to attend an induction ceremony or otherwise travel to Florida to be sworn in.
Where do I send my completed oath? If you are authorized to be sworn in, you must upload your properly executed oath to your Florida Board of Bar Examiners portal account, within 90 days of the letter authorizing you to be sworn in. Your Certificate of Admission will be ordered, at no cost to you, when your properly executed oath is received by the board. Approximately eight weeks is required for preparation of the certificate. Your Certificate of Admission will be sent to you at the address of record in your portal account. Additional certificates may be purchased for $25 each.
When will I receive my bar number? Once the board has received your executed oath, your name will be forwarded to The Florida Bar’s membership records department. The Florida Bar (TFB) new member communication will be sent automatically via email once new members are received from the Florida Board of Bar Examiners and it will come from [email protected] You will also receive TFB new member communication via physical mail within 7-10 business days of the emailed communication. Both of these communications will include your new bar number, information on accessing your Member Portal, Continuing Legal Education, the Young Lawyers Division and available Bar resources. The physical new member communication will also include your new Florida Bar card. The Florida Bar begins sending information regarding annual renewals, which are due each July 1, as early as April each year and will continue to provide reminders until the end of the collection period.
What do I need to do to attend an induction ceremony? Information regarding the induction ceremonies, including a registration notice, is included with a letter from the Clerk of the Supreme Court of Florida. You are not required to attend an induction ceremony; however, many applicants have found attendance at the ceremony to be a valuable experience. In order for your name to appear on the program, you must advise the board, in writing, no later than 10:00 a.m. on the Wednesday prior to the ceremony that you plan to attend. After that time, you may still attend the ceremony, but your name will not be on the list provided to the court.
Can I attend an induction ceremony if I have already been sworn in? You may attend a ceremony even if you are sworn in prior to the ceremony. You will not complete a new oath at the conclusion of the ceremony.

Making the grade: The latest Florida bar exam results are in
Exams have been held online since the start of the covid-19 pandemic.

For the second year in a row, less than half of those who took Florida's online-only bar exam now can move on to become attorneys, according to results released Monday by the Florida Board of Bar Examiners.
Of the 3,343 who sat for the July 27-28 test, 1,483 people passed — or 44.4%. That's down from 47.4% passing who took last year's summer exam, which was postponed to October because of the coronavirus pandemic.
But counting only those taking the exam for the first time, nearly 72 percent passed. "Passing the bar" also means clearing what's called a character and fitness review, an in-depth background check.

Exams have been held online since COVID-19 forced social distancing and other precautions.
Florida's bar exam passage rates had been trending down in recent years, but have taken a nosedive amid the pandemic. The exam is usually given at the Tampa Convention Center but is now administered remotely.
Here's how the state's 11 law schools fared in terms of first-time test-taker passage rates. For comparison, the passage rate for the previous year's summer exam is in parentheses:
- Florida International University College of Law, Miami: 88.8% (89.3%)
- University of Miami School of Law: 82.5% (72.5%)
- University of Florida College of Law, Gainesville: 81.3% (83.9%)
- Stetson University College of Law, Gulfport: 78.8% (74.4%)
- Florida State University College of Law, Tallahassee: 73.9% (84.4%)
- Ave Maria School of Law, Naples: 67.6% (64.4%)
- Nova Southeastern University College of Law, Fort Lauderdale: 66.7% (67.4%)
- Barry University School of Law, Orlando: 59.2% (61.2%)
- Florida A&M University College of Law, Orlando: 56.8% (61.7%)
- Florida Coastal School of Law, Jacksonville: 53.3% (57.6%)
- St. Thomas University College of Law, Miami Gardens: 50.8% (66.9%)
In other results, those previously admitted to the practice of law in other states logged a 78.5% pass rate, compared to 71.7% last year, and those who graduated from law schools outside Florida passed by 62.5%, compared to 63.8% last year.
In Florida, as in many states, the bar exam is given twice a year, in February and July. The number of law graduates sitting for the winter exam is traditionally lower than in summer.
The pass rate for this February's exam was 27%, with 502 passing out of 1,854 taking the exam, including first-time and repeat takers.
The bar exam has always been an in-person, two-day exam; recent examinations have been fully online.
"Formal induction ceremonies, hosted by the Supreme Court and the 2nd through the 5th Florida District Courts of Appeal, will be held to swear in the new attorneys on Oct. 13," a press release said.

Just over half of those taking both parts of the General Bar Examination in Florida passed, according to results released by the Supreme Court of Florida Monday.
The General Bar Examination has two components. Part A includes the Florida portion of the exam, while Part B includes the Multi-state Bar Examination (MBE). Completion of both parts comprises the Overall Method.
Of the 2,794 applicants in the Overall Method, 51% passed. Of the 186 applicants who took only Part A, 55% passed, while only 36% of the 102 applicants who took only Part B passed.
The Supreme Court approved 1,417 candidates for admission to the Florida Bar. That number does not represent all passing applicants, as character and fitness investigations for some, required for admission to the Florida Bar, are still underway.
Induction ceremonies will occur on October 12.

Among first-time bar exam takers, nearly 65% passed — 1,432 of 2,794 total applicants.
Graduates from Florida International University College of Law performed best on the exam, with more than 81% receiving passing scores.
Students from the Florida Coastal School of Law had the lowest pass rate at just under 31%.
Pass rates for other schools are as follows:
— University of Florida College of Law: 78.7%

— Ave Maria School of Law: 71.4%

— Non-Florida law schools: 53.6%
— Florida A&M University College of Law: 52.6%
— Barry University School of Law: 49.2%
The results reflect the performance in the July 2022 General Bar Examination, which took place July 26-27 in Tampa.

Florida bar exam passage rate lowest in decade, says new report

People who took the Florida Bar exam for the first time in July posted the lowest passage rate for July test-takers in a decade, a review of the data by The News Service of Florida shows.
STORY: Fight over Florida prosecutor suspended by Desantis headed to trial
The Florida Board of Bar Examiners on Monday published results of the July exam showing that 64.4 percent of the 2,225 first-time participants passed. As a comparison, 80.2 percent of 3,034 first-time participants passed the Bar exam in July 2012. Since then, the lowest passage rate before this year was 67.2 percent in 2018.
Michele Gavagni, executive director of the Florida Board of Bar Examiners, noted this July’s exam was the first in-person July exam since 2019. The Bar exam was not administered in July 2020 because of the coronavirus pandemic and was administered online in July 2021. Florida International University had the highest passage rate among Florida schools this year, with 81.2 percent of 133 FIU law students who took the exam passing.
“This year’s graduates overcame many unusual challenges during their law school experience, and they should all be commended for their resilience,” FIU Law Dean Antony Page said in a statement.

The University of Florida law school had the next-highest passage rate, with 78.7 percent of 150 test-takers passing. Barry University School of Law posted the lowest passage rate among law schools currently operating, at 49.2 percent. Florida Coastal School of Law, a private school in Jacksonville that shuttered last year, had 13 students take the exam, with only four passing.
The Florida Supreme Court on Monday approved 1,417 candidates for admission to the Bar, according to a news release from the board.
“This group is not inclusive of all applicants who passed the examination as the character and fitness investigations for some applicants who passed the examination are ongoing,” the news release said.

Bar exam pass rate rises in New York, falls in Florida

- The July 2022 bar exam has been a mixed bag for states so far
- Test was given in person this year
- Many states opted for remote exams in 2021
(Reuters) - Two-thirds of the law school graduates who took New York’s bar exam in July passed the all-important attorney licensing test, bar officials announced Thursday.
That’s up slightly from 2021’s 63% overall pass rate, according to new statistics from the New York State Board of Law Examiners. But the percentage of those taking and passing the bar on their first try fell to 75% in 2022 from 78% in 2021.
New York’s bar exam is the largest in the country, with 9,609 people taking the July test.
Bar pass rates have implications across the legal profession that go beyond whether an individual law graduate may practice law. Law schools with low pass rate among alumni risk losing their American Bar Association accreditation, and low pass rates can constrain the entry level hiring pool for legal employers.

The July 2022 bar exam has brought mixed results nationwide, with most jurisdictions having reported their results. This year's test was administered in person, while many states held the exam remotely in July 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Two other key jurisdictions have yet to report full results. The State Bar of California has said it will release results Nov. 10. Texas, the third-largest bar exam jurisdiction behind New York and California, has released a list of bar passers but has yet to disclose its overall pass rate.
The national average score on the Multistate Bar Examination, which is the 200-question multiple choice portion of the test used by all states, fell by a fraction of a point from July 2021, to 140.3, the National Conference of Bar Examiners reported in September. That suggested July’s 2022 result would track closely to 2021’s pass rates, though the conference predicted there would be state variations.
Florida, the country’s fourth-largest bar exam jurisdiction, saw one of the larger declines this year. Its overall July pass rate fell 10 percentage points to 51% from 2021, while its first-time pass rate declined 8 percentage points to 64% this year.
Among those who took the District of Columbia’s July bar, 72% passed, down slightly from 73% the previous year. Similarly, Pennsylvania’s overall pass rate fell from 69% in 2021 to 68% in 2022.
Illinois and Virginia joined New York with higher overall pass rates. Illinois’ overall pass rate ticked up slightly from 67% in 2021 to 68% in 2022. Virginia’s July 2022 overall pass rate held steady at 75%.
