Community: essay on community (737 words) | sociology.
ADVERTISEMENTS:
Here is your essay on Community (737 Words)!
Community is another fundamental concept used in sociology. Because human civilization grows and develop in the lap of community. It is a well known fact that an individual rarely exists alone. He always lives with his fellows in a group. It is also equally true that one can’t be a member of all groups existing in the world. Hence an individual lives and establishes relations with those people who reside in a close proximity with him i.e. within definite territory.

It is also obvious and natural that people residing in a definite area develop likeness, co-operation and fellow-feeling among themselves. As a result they share common customs, traditions, culture and develop common social ideas among themselves. This fact of common social living within a limited or definite geographical area gives birth to community.
But the origin and growth of community goes back to the origin of human civilization. Man has been living in community of some sort since his arrival. Community is the original and first abode of human civilization. The human civilization itself reared up in community. During pre-historic era man was leading a nomadic or barbarian life and was wandering here and there for food and could not settle up anywhere.
But when his mental horizon increased he learns the skill to collect food and other needs from a particular place mainly on river banks or fertile areas and permanently settled there. When a group of people or families lived together in a particular area which led them to share each other’s joys and sorrows, as a result a pattern of common living is created which marked the origin of community life. Gradually community life expands with the creation of different socio-economic, cultural and political relations among the people of a particular area. This lead to the emergence of different social, political, economic and cultural institutions. As a result a full- fledged community was created.
However, the term community has been derived from two Latin words ‘Com’ and ‘Munis’ which means ‘together’ and ‘servicing’ respectively. It consists of a group of people with common and shared interests. But in common discourses the term community very often wrongly used such as racial community, caste community, religious community etc.
Here the meaning of the term community differs from the one which is used in sociology. The term is also used both in a narrower and broader sense. In a narrow sense community refers to Hindu or Muslim community but in a broader sense community may refers to a nation or world community. It also refers to a village, a town or a tribal community.
When a group of individual or members of any group small or large live together and share a common life and have developed a strong sense of awe feeling among them they form a community. They enter into definite social, economic and cultural relations and have developed a sense of community consciousness which distinguishes them from others. A group of individuals or group of families living in Physical Proximity with each other in a definite geographical boundary constitutes a community.
But to understand the meaning of the term community we must have to give a look towards the definitions given by sociologists. But sociologists differ among themselves in their approach to the meaning of community. Some puts emphasis on area or ecological aspects where as others puts emphasis on psychological aspects.
(1) According to Maclver, “Community is an area of social living marked by some degree of social coherence”.
(2) According to Kingsley Davis, “Community is the smallest territorial group that can embrace all aspects of social life”.
(3) According to Ogburn and Nimkoff, “Community is the total organisation of social life within a limited area”.
(4) According to Arnold Green, “A Community is cluster of people, living within a contiguous small area, who share a common way of life”.
(5) According to E.S. Bogardus, “Community is a social group with some degree of’we-feeling’ and living in a given area.”
(6) According to G.A. Lundberg, “Community is a human population living within a limited geographic area and carrying on a common inter-dependent life”.
Thus, community refers to a group either small or large whose members live together in such a way that they share a common life and have developed a strong sense of community sentiment or consciousness among them which distinguishes them from others.

Definition – Defining Community
Definition Essay – Defining Community How would someone define the word community? A community could be anything. If one were to listen to an everyday conservation, the word community, would probably be used very little. The word community has multiple meanings, ranging from communist or socialistic society (Emerson) to the quality of appertaining to or being held by all in common (Oxford).
Due to the many meanings of the word community, people have learned to substitute community for other words. Most of the definitions are common has in a society linked by common interests but, would you really say a buffalo community? Of course not, you would say a herd of buffalo. Unfortunately, community is really only used if someone were to be talking about where people live. Even the meanings of community don’t announce themselves when people use the word.
Working with a service agency (YouVote), community is used quite a bit. We worked a lot with the community of Michigan Sate University. Would Michigan State University students all have common interests? We all have the common interest to come here but, not common degrees, or classes. If it’s different at MSU would it be different everywhere else? In the 1971 Webster Dictionary the last part of the definition reads, or region linked by common interests. In today’s society most people living in a community aren’t linked by common interests. A lot of people have different interests, beliefs, and way they go about living their lives from their neighbors.
A more accurate definition, is, a group of people living in the same locality and under the same government (Dictionary.com). Now wouldn’t that definition be more suitable? It probably best describes most of today’s community actually. Take for example here at Michigan State. There are people most all different cultures, backgrounds, and sexual preferences (please don’t take to offense).
Communities are just, for the most part, made up of people who live around each other. They may not like each other, or be like each other but one common interest they do same is they all have dreams. The word community has been changed to try to relate to how people live together today.

Defining Community
Small group interaction process: a case study.
There will always be conflicts in our daily lives. However, in our readings, conflict does not have to be negative; apparently, it depends on the circumstances, conflicts can be absolute. According to our text, the conflict has a way to convert energy to positive social learning. "Without conflict, attitudes, behavior, and relationships will always stay the same, regardless of whether they are fair" (Tubbs, 2012, p. 325). Positive conflicts can help to eliminate the issue or the cause of the problem. According to our text about "groupthink," which represents a form of social influence of the majority that results in a dangerous level of agreement by
Loss Of Individualism
Using individualism to think and live like others is not always bad. Being able to connect to a group of people brings happiness and a sense of belonging which is needed in people's lives. It is also good to want to be like others because in dire situations where mass populations are needed to comprehend directions, all these people are conscious and knowledgeable of the situation. However, the loss of individualism is a problem to society because there becomes a loss of diversion and spread of ideas which come from individuality. The belonging to a group is satisfying, but it leads to the overall loss of our individuality as people and a society, which is the barrier to against the individuality
Defining Community Essay

Analysis of Carol Tavris' In Groups We Shrink From Loner’s Heroics
This is modeled by the fact that people being in groups, causes them to act and think differently than they would have if they had been alone. In her essay, Tavris uses many examples of this: In the case of Kitty Genovese or the late Rodney King who was beat to death by police officers. People have a tendency to act differently in groups, others suffer due to people not wanting to “rock the boat” or they do not want to “embarrass themselves or others if they are wrong” (19). Tavris offers a solution to the way people act in groups, “By understanding the impulse to diffuse responsibility, perhaps as individuals we will be more likely to act. By understanding the social pressures that reward group-think, loyalty and obedience, we can foster those that reward whistle blowing and moral courage. And, as a society, we can reinforce the belief that they also sing who stand and watch” (19). If civilization can solve the dilemma of people acting differently when they are in groups with others, the world could be a much improved place.
Durkheim and the Relevance of His Theories in Modern Society
As organic solidarity is typical of complex, industrialised societies, Durkheim’s theory is very applicable to modern life and the first world in particular. Individuality is a major feature of people living in the western world today e.g. the USA, UK, and Ireland. This is evident in our political and social thinking. Much emphasis is placed on personal rights and the belief that nothing is more important than us. (Hughes et al, 1995) Meanwhile we are not self-sufficient; we rely heavily on the expertise of thousands globally to live our daily lives e.g. the food we eat, the clothes we wear, the cars we drive etc. (Macionis and Plummer, 2005)
Why Not Socialism? The Camping Trip
Community is built of two main elements. First, community requires communal caring. Members need to put themselves in positions where they are able to relate to other members and does everything “within reasonable limits of self-sacrifice” (65). The second is communal reciprocity. Individuals will serve other members of the community, not for exchange of goods, but to provide generosity and support. These elements of community appear in the lives of all individuals, even the most capitalist ones. Humans are entirely capable of these.

A community is a group of people who live in the same area, interact with each other, and share certain norms and values. A community is defined as a locality-based entity, composed of systems of formal organizations reflecting societal institutions, informal groups, and aggregates that are interdependent and whose function or expressed intent is to meet a wide variety of collective needs (Stanhope & Lancaster, 2012).

Analysis Of The Poem ' An Elephant Crackup ' Essay
When analyzing social patterns and behaviors, is there a significant difference between the psychology of an individual and groups? Collective and individual behavior is surprisingly similar, and depending on the circumstances, identical. Furthermore, Sherry Turkle in selections from her work Alone Together accounts
The Features of Durkheim's Social Realism Essay

As Durkheim said that “My work had its origins in the question of the relations of the individual to social solidarity. Why does the individual, while becoming more autonomous, depend more upon society? How can he [sic] be at one more individual?”(Durkheim 1976: 37-8) Durkheim is basically saying that as we move from a mechanical form of solidarity which has a simple occupational structure as there where fewer occupations compared to organic solidarity where with the development of society brought about more occupation’s to choose from means that there is now a more

What is a Community? Essay example
- 4 Works Cited
A community is established when more than two people share the same values and through time this personal connection evolves into a fellowship governed by rituals, traditions, and a particular form of communication that when taken together makes a group of individuals whether living in a specific geographical area or connected by ideals so distinct that their distinguishing marks allow them to stand out from among the crowd. They do not just believe in something like an organization but they need each other to survive and thrive. A good example is the Old Order Amish Mennonite community wherein the community serves as source of identity, strength and provides the reason why they should sustain the community’s way of life.
Community As A Community : The Influence Of My Community
I wouldn’t really say my community as a whole has an impact on me as a person but people in around me have had a huge impact on me for who I am today. The people who have the biggest impact on me is defiantly my family and friends, I have done so many things with them that made me the person who I am today.
Collective Behavior and the Assertion of Individuality: A Study
One of the facets of living within civilized society is that there are certain norms and social conventions that people must follow. Frequently, there is a large effort on the part of government, financial, and social institutions to keep people doing most of the same thing as others going to work, driving cars, buying homes, etc. Despite the fact that people engage in these efforts individually, the simple fact that they are all attempting to do the same thing, in much the same way, is indicative of the fact that they are engaged in collective behavior. THESIS: Those who are able to overcome collective behavior and allow for their individuality to determine their own outcomes exemplify the best of human nature.

Definition Of Community Essay

Excerpt from Essay :
Individuality Individuality can be very beneficial, and crucial to the success of organizations, and some community settings; it can also be destructive however, depending on the mission and goals or objectives of a community, particularly very large communities. Group interests are often the highlight of community existence; while individuality is encouraged, it does not supersede the interests of the group at large. One of the benefits of living in a community, is that individual members have the choice of whether to choose a community, or to leave (Smith, 2001). Traditionally the group majority will flesh out the needs of the group based on common interests. Typically individuality is expressed, but conforms to the overall group interests within a community environment (Smith, 2001). Collectivist vs. Individualistic Collectivist views tend to favor that which is in the best interests of the majority community view rather than what is in the best interests of the individual views (Putnam, 2000). Thus, to assist in the building of thriving communities, one would support more collectivist viewpoints, to ensure the well-being of the community is undertaken in the most efficient manner possible. Individualism often denotes that a community will not have very strong ties or bonds among the people (Smith, 2001). This can be damaging in the community environment. This may not be true, but historically this often has been the case (Putnam, 2000). Collectivist connotes very strong bonds among community members, and is preferred in community environments. It suggests that from birth people within a community are strongly united and bonded to support the community ideals. It implies strong bonds that are virtually impenetrable and unbreakable. It is much like a family environment; which is more likely to stand strong in stormy times or in unsettling economic trials (Smith, 2001). Community And Shared Interests Smith (2001) defined community in early terms as the area in which people shared a common life. It included people that lived within the same village, but also the people in the village that lived in the same place that shared the same interests and ideas. In this way, one might also deem the community those that shared the same political ideologies, or at least the same desires to have their community benefit from the same political ideologies (Lindeman, 1921). A community or the theory of the community from this perspective, may be approached as a value, or the value one perceives in the community based on the shared and similar interests of the community members living together. This may include the number of elements shared by community members, based on solidarity, trust , and mutuality (Smith, 2001). Some might consider a community in this perspective, more of a fellowship than an actual community, where members were considered part of a fraternity (Smith, 2001). Community as sharing the same language A community also includes individuals that share a common language. This may be natural, particularly for those members living in a particular place, which look to their community as an area where common life is shared; in this sense the community represents a place, or territory, where people share something in common; this shared element may be language and geography . Some refer to this as linguistics and locality (Smith, 2001). Community in this respect may be approached from the perspective of community studies, locality studies, or language studies (linguistic studies) (Smith, 2001). Community Shared History Shared history might be looked at from the perspective of shared communion (Smith, 2001) which often includes a community members' "attachment to a place, group, or idea" where a "spirit of community" may reside (Smith, 2001). This may also entail a communion around God, or creation, where a community may feel strongly toward a spiritual union within a historical place, or surrounding certain historical events that may have taken place within a certain geographical region during a specific point in history; this may have happened for example, during the time of Christ, and among Christians (Lindeman, 1921). Attachment often happens in these areas, where individuals have common ground to tread upon, especially based on historic events. Community Similar Goals Working toward similar goals also helps build a sense of shared identity and shared mission. In this sense the term community can help create a symbolic role or meaning, helping to create a common elective goals and interests, such as religious beliefs, occupational interests, ethnic origins or interests, sexual orientation or other interests that may reflect the self-conceptual model that makes up the community (Smith, 2001; Putnam, 2000). This often creates an important place role within…

Community health is a common term in the field of public health. In essence, community health refers to the discipline, which entails the study and enhancement of the health features or characteristics of biological communities. Noticing that the term community health often has a wider meaning, the usual use of this term focuses on geographical regions instead of people having shared characteristics (Aviles & Filc, 2010). The medical interventions for improving the community health entail improving access to health care, public health campaigns, just but to mention a few. Similarly, the term environmental health is a usual term in the field of public health, which deals with all aspects within the built and natural environment that may influence the health status of human beings. Environmental health involves all the chemical, physical and biological factors that are external to the individual and all the related aspects influencing behaviors. The aforementioned definition excludes behaviors that are not relative to the environment as well as those that have a relationship to cultural and social environment. On the other hand, occupational health is a common term within the discipline of public health. It refers to the identification and control of risks originating from chemical, physical and other workplace hazards with an aim of establishing a healthy and safe working environment. Some of the hazards that occupational health professionals address include electricity, dangerous machinery, chemical agents and solvents, heavy metals such as mercury, loud noise among others (Vonville, 2008). In essence, occupational health programs include training of safety training for workers who handle hazardous wastes. In addition, such programs encompass comprehensive training on environmental restoration for residents living closer to polluted industrial waste sites. All the three branches, community health, occupational health and environmental health are similar to some extent. That is, regardless of their specific areas of focus, all the three branches of public health involve interventions that improve the health status of persons by addressing risk factors. On the contrary, differences among the three disciples exist. For example, community health focuses on the health of a group of people including the levels of well-being with the group while environmental health addresses risk factors external individuals. Occupational health is more different from the other two disciplines because it focuses on improving the health of persons by addressing risk factors in their particular working environments (Vonville, 2008).
Personally, my professional experience attests to the need to maintain high standards of environmental health for the safety of all humanity. While I was at Haiti in 2010 after the occurrence of the earthquake, I witnessed how people suffered from cholera because of using contaminated water. In essence, environmental health can have a serious impact on people’s health, a situation that may threaten human life. In conclusion, it is pertinent to address community, environmental and occupational health issues for the well-being of humanity. The access to health information, provision of safe working environment and campaigns for educating the public on health matters is pertinent to build a healthy and productive society. Therefore, collective responsibility is significant for the realization of health objectives and a quality life for everyone.

Amitai etzioni a new community.
What is a community? To many it is a social group of any size whose members reside in a specific locality, share government, and often have a common cultural and historical heritage. For many this is an abstract term. Many people don’t exactly know what a community is. It can be felt or touched and sure enough it can’t be seen. Society also plays a role in this relative and abstract term of community. Meaning, the body of human beings generally, associated or viewed as members of a community. Amitai Etzioni in his article “The New Community” introduces and compares the ideas of two distinct types of social relations, “gemeinschaft” and “gesellschaft” and argues for the necessity of both to maintain the social foundations of morality. The German words “gemeinschaft” and “gesellschaft”, are terms used by German sociologist Ferdinand Tonnies, refer to “community” and “society” respectively.…
Ken Dempsey's Community
The similarity between the conflicting definitions of community is a common reference to humanity. Beyond this there is no basic agreement. There are different types of communities according to who is defining it. For example, some definitions don’t refer to geographical area at all while others emphasise this as the main characteristic of community, known as community of place. Yet there are conflicting ideas that community doesn’t necessarily have to be an external thing but comes from within an individual, the view that community can just be sharing a common belief or common lifestyle.…

The definition of a community, in simplicity, is a group of people who live in the same area, or the area in which they live. Unfortunately, this definition does not completely explain what a community is. A community would be individuals who share the same space and interact with each other either directly or indirectly via mechanisms or environment. A community is more than a cluster of individuals, it also will be constructed of families and aggregates (persons with many commonalities) that are interdependent or whose purpose is to fulfill a wide variety of the collective needs (Stanhope and Lancaster, 2008).Stepping back and looking at this description, you could imagine the complexity of interactions which would occur for its survival.…

Documentary Summary: Unnatural Causes
It is a term inclusive of both physical and nonphysical factors. The physical factors include the people in our town, the town’s infrastructure, its services, its conditions such as level of sanitation, and more. The nonphysical factors include the amount of money earned by the population, the interaction and support the town offers, and other social determinants. This is a broader definition of community than offered by the documentary, Unnatural Causes. Unnatural Causes does not explicitly define “community” but shows through many examples that a community is one’s immediate surroundings, predominantly the group of people by which someone is surrounded. From watching the videos, a community to me became more than what is around someone’s house; it became everyone and everything that affects a group of people, whether connected through geography or…

Introduction
Now days it is virtually impossible to stay out of some type of social network, text, and immediate communication source. There is a large demand for such networks because of the gratification of involvement. We want to be instantly connected with friends, activities, and social statuses. Virtually everyone wants to feel that they belong to a community or a group. This is done in many ways besides social networking, however this is one of the fastest growing community’s to-date.
Communities are made up of a vast majority of shapes, sizes, colors, and personalities. We are drawn to such diversities as much as we are opposed to them. A lack of understanding with cultures, beliefs, and activities often allow us to dismiss individuals instead of embracing them. Redefining community can be done through many ways. In this course we wrote on topics related to social networks, food, and even the University life, showing that community if much more than the neighborhood one grew up in.
Throughout this course we learned many ideal on community-related unities. Starting with the Hamburg steak, we will see that one common like is intertwined throughout most countries, regardless of the differences that normally separate them. Next we will move onto the Diverse Community of Orange and Green, which shows the communal association in supporting their university. The community is not defined by menial factors like age, race, sexuality, or religious beliefs; it is joined by common support for their university. And finally wrapping up we will read about social networks like Twitter and how positive communication on diversity can create understanding, respect, and favorable outcome.
Food-related Community: Hamburg Steak
Hamburger (or known as Burger) is a beef patty served between two slices of bread. This is considered the main meal or the favorite meal among Americans nowadays. The word Hamburger originally applied for the people from Hamburg. Hamburg is the largest city in Germany. Centuries ago when America was discovered many people emigrated from Germany, mainly from Hamburg, where the largest port of Europe was located. Hamburg’s port took people by sailing them from Hamburg to finally arrive to New York’s port. These immigrants arrived New York in the early 18 th century. While sailing to New York they were served those beef patties (or so called Hamburg steak) it was basically ground beef sliced into round circle patties, added regional spices with chopped onions and breadcrumbs. German-speaking immigrants brought their favorite foods with them when they first came, Hamburg steak was one of those favorite foods they brought and luckily the steak became popular and a standard meal among the poorer classes.
In the mid 18 th century, the German Hamburg steak spread around the U.S. It was also seen in some restaurants breakfast menus known as Hamburger or Hamburg beefsteak and the asking price was about 0.10¢. In the late 18 th century, the term Hamburger became an original American meal. Few decades later the Hamburger became the most popular and most consumed meal throughout the whole country. And that’s when restaurants started adding it to their menus. And the first appearance of fast food restaurants was in mid 19 th century. These restaurants main idea is to cook frozen food that was already prepared before it was frozen and to serve them as fast as possible in a low cost of money. By that period of time, a fast food restaurant, McDonald’s came out and created the first Burger that is considered fast food.
Hamburgers today are most likely to be found in fast food restaurants than in a higher-class restaurant. McDonald’s has the honor of having the best fast food burger out there. They serve the Big Mac; it is one of the world’s top selling hamburgers. Other major fast food companies, Burger King (also known as Hungry Jack’s in Australia), A&W, Culver’s, Whataburger, Carl’s Jr., Hardees, Wendy’s (known for their square patties), Jack in the Box, Cook Out, Harvey’s, Shake Shack, In-N-Out Burger, Five Guy’s, FatBurger, Vera’s, Bargersville, Back Yard Burgers, Lick’s HomeBurger, Roy Rogers, SmashBurgers, and Sonic. Also rely heavily on hamburger sales: Fuddruckers and Red are hamburger chains that specialize in mid-tier “restaurant-style”. These restaurants and chains serve not only the burger as meat between two breads, also the varies kinds of burgers that could be imagined like, cheeseburger, double cheeseburger, mushroom and Swiss, veggie burger, hot and spicy, chill cheese, chicken, etc… In few word in this paper am going to explain how that German steak after it came from Hamburg to New York and introduced to American people, and how some restaurants started added this German food to its breakfast menu, then in became more popular and consumers started seeing it all around America, then it became the signature of an America food, and finally it landed in its final stop to be considered a fast-food product (McDonald’s).
Hamburger now reflects McDonald’s, which an American fast food restaurant is more than it reflects any restaurant out there or even knowing that this food originally came from Germany many decades before. McDonald’s now has many-many restaurants throughout the whole world probably more than any other food or non-food chains. And whenever it opens a place in a country it always has the same main burgers like the Big Mac, cheeseburger, chicken burger, and the quarter pounder. And they always have some different added burgers to the menu for more choices for the consumer and those items are always different depending on the country or the community around that specific store. For instance, McDonald’s in Saudi Arabia have an item in their menu called “Marabou” with the choice of chicken or beef. And many other items that are not so related to the community but they are well consumed by people. And also in France they have the Croissant burger. In Germany they have the “Big McFeast”, “New York Classic” and “Big Texas Bacon”. Also in the U.S. they have some of that international menu item like the “Mac Rib”. What am trying to point out, is the varies items that McDonald’s have to add to its menu to basically try to interact with the community its targeting.
In this exchange of food, traditions we found in the main meal which was the Hamburg steak. To be manipulated and changed by adding new and different ingredients and toppings. To now be know as the American burger. Or even inventing new recipes and types of cooks like what McDonald’s do with their stores outside the U.S. and creates new signature to almost every nature around the world. That could result on having a new tradition. Even to other parts of the world. In the future the American hamburger could be changed and become the main dish for another country. In this case the Hamburg steak that belongs to Germany, by time transformed to Hamburger or burger and became a number one American tradition. And that sort of exchange happens usually from immigrating people to new places like in this case, the transformation of a food that was first served in a ship to immigrants to sharing this food with the people of the new land which in this case its New York to finally become an American meal served everywhere in the country. Nevertheless, there are positive aspects of this exchange. There is also some negativity. The positive thing about this sort of exchange is the sharing and trying new ideas of food and creating their own signature, and the negative side is usually when the exchanged is a bad habit that is a dangerous thing or something that could ruin other culture traditions like cigarettes, drugs, or whatever. But in this subject the exchange is considered positive because the majority of people are satisfied now after developing one food to a better one and in this exchange I don’t think there is anything negative about it.
School-related Community: The Diverse Community of Orange and Green
In this observation essay, I wanted to observe the student life in Stanford and from that point on I noted much more things than I expected. I started to walk back and forth in the aisle and tracking people moves and actions. I watched them closely interacting with each other and starting those small communities. There was a common thing running around between the individuals I observed. They all had that desire of making new friends with people who shares the same interest. This is where I developed what I will be writing about in this paper. While in Rebekah Nathan’s essay she also has the same type of observation and she mainly focused on some key points that I also will focus on in this paper. One of her key points was “Community” which I will speak a lot about in this paper whether it is the community created in the dorms, or the events that are created by it. Nathan also spoke about this field in particular, or even by involving in an event helps create more friends and communities, which also Nathan said; but she said that these events did not succeed at her University because the students did not involve interact in those events. The diversity of people she was talking about was mostly about the skin color and how they are weakly connected, but within the University of Miami it is a different case. In my observation watch, I mainly focused on the nationality of students and how diverse it is in UM and they succeed in breaking the barriers between all countries and created a new big diverse community, what I like to call “The Big Family of UM”.
The city of Miami is one of the most diverse cities in the US. It has more Hispanic citizens than Americans and also a lot of other races from other parts of the world. However, the most Hispanic race in Miami comes from Cuba, Venezuela, Colombia, México, Argentina, Brazil, Peru, and few from other parts of Latin America. As well as Europe, and Asia, and that ads to what makes Miami such a diverse city. The University of Miami is the best university in the area it is actually ranked in the 38 th place among all the US universities. That is a good thing to attract more and more people to come, live and study in Miami. That what makes UM one of the most diverse university in the US. The two main colors that represents UM are Orange and Green and “the U” is the logo for it. UM also has a great football team that plays in the college league football “The Hurricanes” and they are the mainstream and the first representative of the university. The mascot of UM’s team is an angry cane wearing the football jersey of UM and his name is Sebastian.
First of all I would like to talk about the dorms. In UM there are few dormitories where students can live-in during their study years, but there is a specific one called Stanford. It is only assigned for freshman and all freshmen must live there for their first semester. The reason of assigning a building just for freshman is to help them make friends with each other since they are all new. They don’t know anybody and they all share the same thing; which is making friends by putting them all in the same place. It makes it easier for freshman to make a lot of friends and build up their connections, that also helps their network to expand and so. Basically then, it is obvious to say that Stanford’s main idea is to help students create communities within the dorms. That is actually what is happening, when I first went to Stanford, and started my observation I had a lot in mind to write about, but what really I think is the most noticeable thing is that everybody there are friends, and all the dorm rooms were open for anybody to go in a hang out, and they hang out in groups. Even if someone didn’t know the person who actually lives their as long as he knows someone in that room then he kind of invited to get in and make friends with these people, and they do that because they all know that is the only way to make friends. However, Nathan might not agree with me based on her study, but still diversity and community in UM is different than any other university. Honestly that was quite amazing; it just makes making friends much easier.
Then, The dormitory holds all kind of people from different countries and different continents of the world with different backgrounds and as stated above that Miami is already one of the most ethnicity diverse cities in the US, so that what makes UM also a diverse ethnic university. That’s what makes it kind of hard for those students to create a community that holds all of those students together. That’s when Stanford come along trying instantly to gather those student to help them create their own community by doing all possible things to attract as much students as possible pushing them to meet and make friends. By hosting different kind of events like a movie nights, the super bowl night, and outdoors sports tournament events like football, basketball, baseball, soccer, etc… Once I was involved in one of those sport event, a soccer tournament to be specific and it actually helped me a lot to make a lot of new friends who they also share the same interest like me which is soccer. After that tournament was done, me and my new friends realized that the best thing about this tournament is that we actually met new people and made new friends, not only playing and wining. That made me actually more involved in events and gatherings. I believe others had been involved more too because everybody wants to make friends.
However, I also noticed that the board always giveaway T-shirts that are basically Orange or Green or the ones that has the litter “U” or the picture of Sebastian the mascot or even other words or phrases that are commonly used throughout the universities campus. Those T-shirts are also sold in the bookstore as well, and they are selling well. The reason of doing this is because that when wearing those shirts it makes students feel connected or united because they share something in common. The university itself also encourages them to wear those T-shirts by showing up Sebastian on campus from time to time to take pictures with and cheer them up, so that students will always have him in mind and never forget him. However, T-shirts are not the only wearable stuff that the students wear to display them selves as a UM student or fan of “The Hurricanes”. For instance, there are wristbands, shorts, bags, and other stuff as well. But the real question is does the majority of these students wear this stuff to show that they are from UM or to support the football team. So I looked up more and more to finally discover that three out of five which is the majority of those students wear T-shirts and stuff that has the name of the team “Hurricanes”, the picture of Sebastian or anything that is related to the football team more than the regular Orange and Green shirts. That means that the vast majority of students are cheering up for the team. There is a great team atmosphere between students and the community that brings all those different people together under one roof to care and share and feel like they are in a one big family that is called “Hurricane” or “the U”.
To sum up, we can say that Diversity and Community does exist in the University of Miami and that is totally a positive thing. The dormitories like Stanford, the events that are held within the UM campus, and the “Spirit clothes” made it happen by helping create these small communities and to finally in the end it becomes a big one. It actually doesn’t matter where students come from, their ethnicity, background, or whatever, as long as the university tries to work things out it, if they did a good job in the end it will finally happen. Not like the university Rebekah was in I honestly did not like Rebekah’s university based on what she wrote on her essay, but compared to University of Miami there are big difference here. I really like what’s going on in UM and they are making a good job put of it, and am proud to be part of UM’s big family.
Social Network-related Community: Twitter translates Appiah’s image
Appiah had always wanted to see an idol world, world without hate, world without wars, and world without discrimination. However, cosmopolitanism meant a lot to Appiah; he always wanted people to get together to share love and peace, he suggested making conversations with people from other parts of the world will help resolve some of the problems we have, to change this world we live in into a better place. Although, there are some people would not communicate with others who have issues that are not familiar with because of their pride, they think that letting go of their extreme pride might break their ego; but that is wrong, for instance, when homosexuality first occurred, a lot of people was shocked they ignored it and was instantly against it, but by time people started to accept it more and more; if people tried to accept homosexuality from the beginning, we would have reached this type of mentality long time ago. Anyway, most of these problems are now being solved and people are being more connected and more understanding because now we have much more advanced ways of communicating specially the social networking. Most of these ideas Appiah had, happens to be achieved in most of these social networks like: Twitter, Facebook, My Space, Google Plus, etc. By that, this finally brings us to the next part which is introducing Twitter, the social website that will be discussed in this paper.
Twitter is one of the largest social networks out there, Twitter’s main idea is to let people write what’s on their mind and also have the chance to discuss anybody’s idea as well, it is almost like Facebook, but more focused on sharing what is on your mind or so called the “status”. But the reason why Twitter is going to be the main subject of this paper is because in Twitter there are no friend requests, you do not need someone to accept your friendship; you can follow anybody, and anybody can follow you; by that you can share and also see what people you are following are thinking about, and these statuses can also be discussed. Twitter succeed on achieving most of Appiah’s image on cosmopolitanism like following different types of people, making conversations, and learning from one another; and how are these three subjects are connected with Appiah’s idea: which are help people reducing their ego, communicating with people with different backgrounds, and helping each other on understanding themselves.
First, Twitter allows you to connect and follow anybody you want, That means you can follow your friends, your favorite athlete, favorite singer, actress, or even important people like a politician or a president, that will let you be up to date on what is going on with the people you are interested in; for example, watching Obama on Television making a statement and he says something that made some listeners uncomfortable, but then, on his Twitter he explains what he meant and also can apologize if he may said something wrong, and by looking at the presidents status and what has he wrote in response to defend his statement and then maybe that will eventually help the followers to understand exactly what the president Obama meant. This also shows that there are no differences between people, no matter who you are or where you come from, anybody can follow you and you can follow anybody.
Then, communicating with people and making friendly conversation is also one of the things Twitter has to offer, you can share your ideas with anyone, and you can also involve in someone else’s sharing and discuss each other’s status and posts. This will help people with different ideas to discuss their ideas and see what responses they get to either support it or to deny it; for example, when someone shares something asking if he should buy a specific product or not, people who are following him will try to give him some ideas to help him make up his mind. That is communicating and caring to help each other, and of course everybody will respect the comments they get and that will make them to respectively reply to their posts as well.
Finally, Tweeter’s always try to learn from each other; when something unacceptably is shared, followers will always try to discuss and change the Tweeter’s mind and can also show the right from wrong also to learn and understand other people point of view and accept them. For instance, a Muslim Tweets saying something about alcohol and why it is forbidden in Islam, then a Christian sees it and discusses it with him and finally the Christian will understand why, and will probably respect that when he meets a Muslim in the future, then he can also educate someone else who does not know that. Therefore, too many people will understand each other and will think twice before judging others. That’s why you see more understanding people now than before, if that happened long time ago, Twitter or any social network by it could achieve world peace, the thing everybody now looks forward to.
In the first argument, in Twitter members are allowed to connect or follow anybody they wanted, that is also related to Appiah’s image of connecting and communicating with each other in favor of letting people know that all the people in this planet are human and they are all similar one way or another. Positivity is that Twitter also helps famous or well known people and the not so much know people to feel all the same and to live a normal life all united under this social network. Nevertheless, Twitter also helps individuals to reduce their ego and pride and makes communicating with others much easier, and educate them and telling them that they are not better than them, which they think they are; there is nobody who is better than any one.
The second part states that making good and friendly conversations. This will make members to talk together without any barriers; that is also what Appiah always wanted to happen is to help find world peace which he called social exchange in a globalized connected world, where everybody can share their social life without being afraid of being criticized because of the differences in mentality, and also to be connected and to show how others can help and work together to know others point of view and understand it, this will also reduce the ignorance that is going on around right now, and let people appreciate their views and backgrounds.
Finally the third paragraph is about people educating each other by correcting the mistakes that occurs frequently between people, that is something that will help expand the knowledge and learning from each other’s background and explains what’s right and what’s wrong to help critics measure twice before judging someone or judging a group of people, also by knowing each other’s background and ethics can make those who speak publicly on the television or the radio to always make the right statements trying to avoid wrong ideas that might cause a negative impact on the people he’s talking about or even the same group of that speaker. This will also show how much people care about each other.
In conclusion, from what is written above it is obvious that Twitter can accomplish what Appiah had in mind about reaching world peace, which might take a little bit of time to do so, but let’s hope it happens soon. Also the reasons above shows why Twitter had been chosen to talk about, when there are too many social networks like Facebook, My Space, Google Plus, and etc. it is because Twitter is most closely to Appiah’s image of cosmopolitanism. For the mean time, communicating with people and making conversation, learning about each other’s background, and finally understanding and accepting one another without negatively judging each other all these together will remain Appiah’s vision of the future world and hopefully to reach world peace as soon as possible.
Conclusion: Re-defining Community
Community-related unity is important to almost everyone. Researching common grounds like in Hamburg steak, Community of Orange and Green, and Social Networks we see that there are virtually a million different types of community. This is not necessarily where you were born, grew up, or what you are most familiar with, this exists in so many more places than that. A community provides a understanding of each other that may not normally be in place. A tolerance for differences to the extent they will be embraces instead of disliked.
In redefining community we see factors like age, race, sexuality, or religious beliefs that join people together. Stepping outside of what is known opens the doors for a whole new understanding of people. A community is a great thing to belong to, and there is some type of community on just about every corner. Picking the best option for you, may mean stepping outside of the comfortable or common, but it will also be more rewarding. Sharing views, desires and goals with others will more often than not benefit everyone involved. Re-defining community to be a positive set of basic values will create a much better outcome for everyone involved.

Community Definition and Description Essay
A community refers to a group of people with more or less common cultural beliefs, who live closely together in a defined area. These people practice similar economic activities, use similar methods, and mostly share the same views about various issues. Anciently it was meant to denote a group of people living preferably nearby and at a specific geographical location. Recently, with the advancement in technology which has removed some obstacles that hindered movement and communication, geographical location is no longer an issue. Community is an important part of human life; to a considerable extent, it determines the interaction and cohesion between human beings. Man is a social animal and one can not live without depending on others, hence the significance of the community in our society. This paper seeks to highlight the importance of community integration, and how the various components of religion address the issue of the community.

Religious studies are mostly concerned with the way people conduct themselves in society, have on many occasions been consulted in defining how the community should be run under various circumstances. In the ancient days, communities were run by the laws of the religion which the community was professing, and in case of any departure from what was expected of one the punishment was administered by the leaders of religion, for example, the Council of Chalcedon, whose judgment was considered final. This made community poses diverse differences from one part of the world to the other since religions were distinct from one another. Those people who believed in Celtic Christianity had different ways of life from the others who did not follow the laws of that religion. Nowadays communication has improved the transmission of various cultural beliefs to different parts, as a result, people of various locations in the world tend to exhibit similarities in the way they conduct themselves within their communities.
Anciently, the church had one vital law that Christianity was useless to an individual if one was to be saved alone, therefore people cared for one another and were very concerned with well being of the community as a whole. The Benedictine rule also emphasizes the importance of communal prayer and the use of the Book of Common Prayer which is believed to improve unity amongst people. For the years that Christianity has been there, the mainline has been for people to love and care for one another, as is evidenced by the monks and Cistercians who live together and share everything they have. Unfortunately, development and technology have made community just another term in the dictionary whose meaning is there for study purposes only, since people do not mind about others especially the unprivileged. Peter preached the canon law of love for all people and treating each one equally while it was Martin Luther’s wish that people should not fight and should live together in peace. The Lord’s Supper was also a sign of love to one another which every Christian is encouraged to observe.
The protestant church gives priority to dependency on the scripture alone as the source of guidance and dwelling on faith, and this has helped in making the community a better organ of society. According to the Protestants, every person in the community is an ambassador of spreading the word of God; hence each one had a role to pray in spreading Christianity, therefore exhibiting that community is inevitable. It’s is this unity that was being emphasized during the period of great awakenings.
On the other hand, the Eastern Orthodox Church depicts the community as reflecting the life that God lived with his disciples, and which human beings are required to follow. There is an organization of authority that reflects the importance of unity in the community and what should be done by everybody. It is the belief of the Eastern Orthodox, that ultimately all human beings will join God in heaven and live together as one forever. Christians are encouraged to live in a community and to extend their love to one another, hence fostering the teachings of Jesus Christ who suffered for everybody without discrimination.
Incidentally, the Roman Catholic Church beliefs that the current church is the continuation of the community church from ancient times. Though the Roman Catholic respects the justice of an individual to make his or her own decisions, it coaxes them to hold on to each other for spiritual support and to enhance Christian cohesion. There is a universal agreement that the church is a group of people with common interests, which include devotion to God and serving others in the community. In this sense, Roman Catholicism acknowledges that people must live as a community and individualism are against the will of God.
People used to live in communities in the past, and everything was done in a group knowing that the neighbor was part of one like one’s children or siblings. During the age of enlightenment, tolerance was emphasized while people were encouraged to be more subtle in their judgment against others in a move that boosted unity in the community. Surprisingly, nowadays the world is so disintegrated that people just care about themselves, and whatever happens to their neighbors does not matter to them.
The community is very vital to society, hence people should try as much as possible to be aware of others around them. In conjunction with that, Jesus stressed the need of the community by bringing his disciples together to live as brothers, and also through teaching the importance of loving our neighbors. Mother Teresa showed a good example by dedicating her life to serving humanity and making the less fortunate in society have a reason to smile. It’s paramount therefore for people to maintain cohesion amongst them, and to be their brothers’ keepers.

My Definition Of Community Essay

Show More Community is a concept that has a variety of meanings, in which sociological theorists have debated its true definition for years. However, out of all the definitions given, each one is related to a common set of ideas that a community, based on thousands of years of history and human interactions, is made up of unified groups of people in a specific area that that often share common interests and interactions with one another. Therefore, this is what constitutes a community in a generalized definition. Nevertheless, I have also developed my own definition of what makes up a community, and how this definition gives its own perspective on a community as well as its strengths and weaknesses. Therefore, based on definition there can be an challenges to study how people exactly interact with one another in a society, because surveys suggest that not everyone actively participates in community events that have interactions among others, weather that be from personal issues, mental or physical health, or just wanting to be more individualistic rather than wanting to be apart of a group. However, there are opportunities to also research my definition of communities by doing surveys, interviews, and secondary data to determine how active people are in their community, how often, how much they interact with others, and where. In doing so, this can provide data on how well a community is functioning and how interactions among its members seem to be

Empowerment theory address the inequalities between individual demographics some of which may include race, age, gender, and ethnicity (Robbins, et al., 2012). Social workers when utilizing empowerment theory must perform self-reflection on a regular basis to ensure they are not placing their beliefs or ideas upon the client, otherwise, they can be disempowering the client (Clark & Krupa, 2012). Social workers should not have the client as a spectator in their treatment. Social workers are one of the main culprits for assuming a person has a certain identity before asking any questions. In some cases, social workers will label others because they are confused by the flexibility people have on their sex, gender, and sexuality. Instead of continuously judging others for not fitting the norm, social workers can learn from Butler and apply it to their practice.…

A Discourse Community Study
Borgs states that “The concept of discourse communities developed from the concepts of speech community and interpretive community, and sits somewhat uneasily between them” (398). This means that when discourse communities were first thought of, they differed from others enough to be considered their own genre of community. Borgs also talks about how usually when you are a member of a discourse community it is because you want to be, which is not the case in other communities. A vital part of a discourse community is the communication aspect which is why I believe Swales made such an emphasis on having multiple ways to communicate within the community, having ways to give feedback, and the type of language used. Borgs pointed out that discourse communities are especially important to writing because knowing your audience (which could likely be a discourse community) is vital to the writing process and the end result.…

Writing a College Essay About Community and Examples
5 things to know when writing a college essay about community + real examples.
The vast majority of colleges have a series of essay prompts students have to complete along with their Common Application. If you’re applying to multiple universities, you’ll notice that many of these essay topics overlap, although the wording is never identical. One of the primary reasons for this similarity is that each college admissions committee wants to learn similar things about you. They’re all interested in learning more about who you are, what you’re interested in, and what goals you have in the future, and why you’ve chosen to apply to this university. One of these prompts is a college essay about community.

While it varies from college to college, the prompt will roughly sound like this:
Tell us a little about a community of which you consider yourself part.
Each university will add its own spin or add-on question, but they’re all asking roughly the same thing: what about your background has had a major impact on who you are today?
Here’s an actual example from Brown University to give you some context:
Tell us about a place or community you call home. How has it shaped your perspective?
At first glance, this college essay about community seems pretty easy. Not only is the question itself short but colleges also typically only request a short answer of a few hundred words. However, after you read over the prompt a few more times, you might realize how open-ended it is. What does it exactly mean by community? Well, that depends on how you want to answer the question. You can take it to mean literally the community in which you live or you can take it in more of a metaphorical sense to mean a group of people with which you identify for some particular reason. Maybe you see your weekly D&D group as part of your community.
Regardless of how you interpret community, the primary thrust of the question remains the same. This is the perfect opportunity for you to talk more about who you are and how you interact with your community at large. Admissions officers aren’t only interested in how you can benefit from attending the university. They’re also interested to know what you’ll be able to offer students, teachers, and the larger school community. This college essay about community is how you’ll illustrate what you can offer.
How to Write the Community Essay: Complete Guide
While all college essays are an excellent time to show admissions officers why you’re a great fit for the school, the community prompt is especially important. If you’re able to knock this essay out of the park, you can successfully convey to colleges how you would contribute to the school. Here, we’ll look at 10 things to know before you write a college essay about the community in an effort to help you write the best response possible.

It’s open-ended.
As we’ve mentioned before, this college essay about community is fairly open-ended. While this lack of direction can be daunting, it’s also an opportunity for you to get creative. Oftentimes, college essay prompts will have hidden questions inherent within the topic. For this subject, it’s not just an essay on a community experience. Admissions officers are also asking what kind of community you identify as being part of. Keeping this in mind, you should think about the different “identities” you have and what groups of people you spend time with at school, work, or elsewhere. Don’t limit yourself to the literal definition of “community” if something else pops up.
Here are some various ways you can interpret the word:
- Interest: Our earlier example of a D&D group being identified as a community would fall into this category. Any group of people who are brought together due to shared experiences or interests could count as a community.
- Place: This is perhaps the most literal definition of community that could be used. However, that doesn’t mean that it’s a bad choice for your response. If you’ve developed a close bond or sense of identity with people who you live near, work, or go to school, this is a great interpretation to run with.
- Action: If you’re involved in an organization, club, or chapter that seeks to bring about positive changes in the world or just within your local area, this would certainly count as a community. This angle would also be a great way to show initiative and action.
Stay focused.
If you’re an active individual with a lot of friends who participates in a bunch of extracurricular activities, you might be a member of a dozen communities or more! Although you might be tempted to mention all of these groups to show some dynamic in your application, we advise students to only stick to one.

First and foremost, the prompts usually only ask for a single community and following these directions is paramount. Secondly, you’re usually only given a few hundred words to respond. This barely gives you enough time to expound on the importance of one community. Focusing on more than one would spread your answer too thin.
Talk about yourself.
No matter what a college prompt might say, the answers should always be about you. Keep in mind that the primary purpose of these essays is to give admissions officers a better idea of who they are. Although the college essay about community does involve other people, the question is primarily asking what group you identify with. While you’ll no doubt mention and even describe other people, don’t forget to talk about yourself. This should be your primary focus throughout the piece as it’s what the college is most interested in learning more about.

Toot your horn.
At the heart of it, a college essay about community is asking you to toot your own horn…at least a little. As a member of a community, you need to be offering something to the group, not just benefitting. As we’ve just discussed, showing this reciprocity illustrates your ability to be a contributing part of a larger community. For admissions counselors, this is an important part of deciding whether or not you’ll be a fit at their university.

Since there aren’t many college essays on volunteering, this would be a great opportunity to talk about it. While you shouldn’t go overboard, don’t be afraid to earnestly talk about how you’re helping others within your community. Still, in order to make a college essay about community service unique, you’ll need to discuss how the experience shaped who you are today.
Get personal with your essay.
While all college essay prompts are designed to help admissions officers get to know you better, a college essay about community is one of the best places to accomplish this goal. As a result, one of the best pieces of advice we can give students is to get personal! Don’t be afraid to show off your quirky side, something unique about you, a little bit about your background, and everything that makes you…well, you! If you feel that the topic you chose is a little too personal for you to really open up, consider switching to another sense of the word “community” about which you’re more comfortable talking.

Pro Tip: If you’re able to connect your college essay about community directly with an offering from the university, you should definitely do it! This not only shows that you’ve done your homework about the school, but it also illustrates a connection between your goals and the university itself. This keeps admissions officers from having to find this connection on their own.
“Describe a Community You Belong to” Essay Example
East meets west.
I look around my room, dimly lit by an orange light. On my desk, a framed picture of an Asian family beaming their smiles, buried among US history textbooks and The Great Gatsby . A Korean ballad streams from two tiny computer speakers. Pamphlets of American colleges were scattered on the floor. A cold December wind wafts a strange infusion of ramen and leftover pizza. On the wall in the far back, a Korean flag hangs besides a Led Zeppelin poster.
Do I consider myself Korean or American?
A few years back, I would have replied: “Neither.” The frustrating moments of miscommunication, the stifling homesickness, and the impossible dilemma of deciding between the Korean or American table in the dining hall, all fueled my identity crisis.
Standing in the “Foreign Passports” section at JFK, I have always felt out of place. Sure, I held a Korean passport in my hands, and I loved kimchi and Yuna Kim and knew the Korean Anthem by heart. But I also loved macaroni and cheese and LeBron. Deep inside, I feared I’d be labeled by my airport customs category: a foreigner everywhere.
This ambiguity, however, has granted me the opportunity to absorb the best of both worlds. Look at my dorm room. This mélange of cultures in my East-meets-West room embodies the diversity that characterizes my international student life.
I’ve learned to accept my “ambiguity” as “diversity,” as a third-culture student embracing both identities.
Now, I can proudly answer: “Both.”
What We Like:
- The author uses very descriptive language that does an excellent job of setting the scene, making the piece as engaging as a short story.
- Although the subject is potentially generic (i.e. a story about having two different identities due to cultural differences), the author does a tremendous job of keeping it personal, insightful, interesting, and non-cliche.
- The story comes full-circle by discussing something that was different in the past and how the writer’s experiences have changed it for the better today.
- The author openly admits to having an “identity crisis” which captures the reader’s attention even more without being too overbearing.
The Pumpkin House
I was raised in “The Pumpkin House.” Every Autumn, on the lawn between the sidewalk and the road, grows our pumpkin. Every summer, we procure seeds from giant pumpkins and plant them on this strip of land. Every fall, the pumpkin grows to be giant. This annual ritual became well known in the community and became the defining feature of our already quirky house.
The pumpkin was not just a pumpkin, but a catalyst to creating interactions and community. Conversations often start with “aren’t you the girl in the pumpkin house?” My English teacher knew about our pumpkin and our chickens. His curiosity and weekly updates about the pumpkin helped us connect.
One year, we found our pumpkin splattered across the street. We were devastated; the pumpkin was part of our identity. Word spread, and people came to our house to share in our dismay. Clearly, that pumpkin enriched our life and the entire neighborhoods’.
The next morning, our patch contained twelve new pumpkins. Anonymous neighbors left these, plus, a truly gigantic 200 lb. pumpkin on our doorstep.
Growing up, the pumpkin challenged me as I wasn’t always comfortable being the center of attention.
But in retrospect, I realize that there’s a bit of magic in growing something from a seed and tending it in public. I witnessed how this act of sharing creates an authentic community spirit. I wouldn’t be surprised if someday I started my own form of quirky pumpkin growing and reap the benefit of true community.
- The author expresses the importance of rituals and family which is an excellent topic for a college essay about community.
- The topic of the essay is mentioned within the first two to three sentences of the piece, making use of limited space.
- The word “community” is explicitly used which shows admissions staff you know how to follow directions while also making it easier for them to understand what you’re writing about.
- The topic is unique to the writer and not something that many – if any – other applicants would be able to write about.
- It comes across as very authentic, personal, and genuine while still being engaging and interesting.
