You might look at the internet in private, but anything you share can quickly become very public. Knowing these five types of internet abuse—which have been used by cyberbullies to embarrass, exploit and harass others—as well as strategies for protecting yourself against them, can help you avoid running into problems.
Social Exclusion

Social exclusion might be one of the mildest forms of cyberbullying, but it can cause serious distress: it's the online equivalent of leaving someone out of a group to which they should expect automatic membership. This could include an entire class not accepting a friend request from a particular classmate.
Tip: Focus on developing real-life relationships rather than depending on virtual relationships for social connection. If you or your child is being excluded online, this is probably an indication of a more serious social problem in real life. Talk to your parents, teachers, or a counselor if you're being socially excluded at school. Joining online or real-life groups based on your interests, hobbies, or activities is also helpful.
Tagging Without Permission
Tagging is a way of attaching a person's name to an online image so that their name appears on the image, or so that images of a particular person can be identified by searching for tagged images using their name.
Tip: Limit and censor images that you post of yourself, and that others post of you. Adjust the privacy settings of Facebook or the website you are using and so that tagged images of you cannot be seen by others.
Block people from accessing any information about you. If your image has been posted on a website, contact the website administrator and request that it be taken down. If the image is pornographic, you may be able to report the abuse to the police, although some teens have found themselves in trouble for others' posting sexual images of them online.
Flaming is the practice of posting derogatory comments about another person. It can include outing another person by revealing that they're gay when they haven't come out; character assassination by berating someone's character through exaggerating perceived faults in an unbalanced way; or posting untrue information about someone in order to damage their image or reputation.
Tip: Although abuse is never the fault of the victim, you can reduce the likelihood that it will happen to you by conducting yourself appropriately online, avoiding provoking negative reactions in others by comments you make, and treating yourself and others with respect. At the very least, any flaming that does happen will be unsubstantiated and unconvincing.
If you are the victim of flaming, report abuse to the owner of the website; webmasters are increasingly aware of internet abuse and have moderators who can remove offensive material.
Sext Re-Posting
Sexting is a risky activity, but when you are in a relationship, you can be drawn into sexting a picture of yourself to your loved one without thinking about the potential future risk of its being used against you.
Younger internet users, especially teenage girls, can also be flattered into sexting images of themselves, or flashing on a webcam, by predators, pedophiles, and pornographers who can use these images for cybersex . This is known as coercion and is a form of internet abuse. While you may feel embarrassed by such images of you being made public, it is not your fault.
Ask them to take the image down, and if they do not, report it to the website as being posted without your consent. If they continue to leave it online, and especially if they are harassing you in any other way, report it to the police.
Impersonation and Identity Theft
Impersonation is pretending to be someone else and can range from obvious mockery to actually borrowing or stealing someone's identity—such as their name, image, or identifying information—to carry out actions that are attributed to the victim.
Tip: For superficial impersonations, such as someone posting up a silly comment online using your name, add a comment below stating that it was not made by you. For more serious impersonations, like comments expressing controversial views you do not agree with, contact the webmaster and ask to have it removed. If your personal information is used to commit theft or another crime, you either confront the culprit to correct the matter or report it to the police.

The government should impose a code of ethics on Net-Cafes and computer centers. Parents should keep a strict watch on their children in this respect. Strict action must be taken against the web-sites that spread disinformation, immorality, vulgarity and computer virus . Internet should only be used as a source of vast information, fast communication and positive entertainment. Its wise and proper use can make it a real blessing for one and all.

‘Internet’ is the abbreviation of ‘International Network’. It is actually an international computer network connecting other networks and computers around the world. To have access to Internet, four things are needed. These are computer, Modem, Telephone connection and Internet service provider.
It is now possible through Internet to send or receive information to or from any part of the world. Books are essential for study and research. But they may not be available every time. Internet can solve this problem. We can get access into any library of the world to search for necessary information. Internet also helps traveler giving information about the environment of the spot and making arrangements for air ticket, hotel booking etc. Internet also helps the patients to get prescription and treatment of the famous doctors at a minimum cost. We can get important news of home and abroad from it. On the other hand, Internet provides us with the opportunities to enjoy music, movie, sports etc. In a word, it can be said that Internet plays a very important role in different fields of our life including trade and commerce, education and recreation and above all effective communication.
Internet has some harmful aspects beside its great contribution. Some miscreants spread Internet virus and destroy computers to fulfill their illegal ends. Some computer hackers use Internet to hack into other’s computer system and cause them harm. Nudity and pornography are also increasing on Internet which degrade moral values especially of our youngsters. Different terrorist groups also use Internet facilities for their terrorist activities. However, all these refer to the wrong use of Internet. The Internet system is, in no way, responsible for these problems.
Information is considered to be power. Information and communication technology represented by Internet is the sole tool to overall development of the present world. But it is a matter of great regret that many people in our country still do not have access to internet. So, we all should make a concerted effort for the large scale and multi-farious expansion of Internet in our country. Only then we will be able to keep pace with the advanced world.

Addictive pornography, excessive gaming, and obsessive social networking are some of the characteristics of excessive internet use (Bernardi & Pallanti 512). The most effective strategy for treating individuals with tendencies of pathological internet use is by training them on how to manage their time properly.
This enables the youth to utilise the internet for constructive purposes for a reasonable period. This can be done using several approaches (Walton 6). When a youth is being treated for pathological use of the internet, it is important to plan time used for every activity every day. This enables the patient to reduce time spent on the internet. It is not a realistic goal to stop the youth from accessing the internet completely (Sieberg 22).
However, the time spent on the internet can be reduced to a reasonable proportion of a day’s total time. Specific number of hours should be allocated. A pathological internet user may spend most of the time on only one programme or social network (Nalwa & Anand 662).

Another approach to minimising the amount of time spent on the internet by a user is through enhancement of the quality of social aspect of life for the youth. As the world becomes technologically advanced, life becomes busier and social activities diminish among the youth.
One of the major causes of excessive internet use is the lack of adequate social interaction among the youth (Grohol 2). Numerous social networking sites on the internet provide an alternative to the real social life. Since accessibility to the internet may be unlimited, a young user creates an ever-growing network of internet personalities, who are the major preoccupation for the young person.
In addition, pathological use of the internet is common among school going youth. Creation of a curriculum that allows more social activities and outgoing behaviour is a viable solution for this problem. This will reduce the urge to engage in internet social networking among youths. The youth are increasingly assuming inactive lifestyles where the computers and personal digital assistants dominate their activities during recreation time.
The education system encourages to focus on academic excellence without considering the importance of excellence in other activities. Thus, social life has been replaced by technology and the internet (Young 15). It is important for the education system to recognise excellence in academics and other activities. This will reduce the preoccupation of the youth with the internet.
Finally, the family as an institution can be used to reduce incidences of excessive use of the internet. The family is the basic social institution that determines the course of development of an individual (Subrahmanyam & Šmahel 31).
In most families, children and young adults are allowed an unlimited access to the internet by their parents. The parents even go further to pay for the internet data and connection. However, they fail to limit the children’s access to the internet since they believe that it is a major source of knowledge (Breslin & Decker 89).
They also fail to acknowledge that internet can be a source of other dangerous habits and preoccupations. Thus, there should be civic education to educate people on the importance of controlling internet use among youth. Parents are the only people with the ability to control the use of internet at home unlike in public institutions where internet and internet content access can be controlled by employing general restrictive measures (Saisan 3). Thus, it is imperative that families are eager to control the internet use among the youth.
Internet is an important source of knowledge and information today. It is used as a tool for learning, accessing information, and social interaction in today’s society. It is an important part of the modern society that cannot be separated from the youth in the near future. However, internet can destroy personalities and decrease productivity of individuals.

It is one of the latest inventions of modern science, it is small in size that can be easily carried with us. It has made our everyday life easy going and tension free. We cannot now communicate easily with anybody from anywhere.
Mobile phones have various uses. The mobile phone is used to communicate over long and short distances without wires. Because of its great benefits, the number of mobile phone users is increasing day by day. Mobile phones are used for taking photos and videos. It is also used for audio recording, sending messages, video calls, social media, etc. At the same time, parents can control their children in the cases of emergencies. Mobile is once easily available to help in case of an emergency. They say a lot of time and energy. Thus they established one to one relationship.
They also keep loved and near ones well-connected. Sitting at a place one can run one’s business at several places simultaneously in different cities and countries with the help of mobile phones. Too much use of mobile may harm our brain, eyes, ears, and create joint and muscle pain, etc. kind of physical and mental health issues. These days internet facility is also available on mobile payments. So people spend more time with their mobile phones. Its radiation may be dangerous to health. It may cause headache, earache, sleeplessness, blurry vision, and many more health problems.
Mobiles have adversely affected the reading habits, particularly of the children. The time they should devote in reading is occupied in enjoying video games. According to studies mobile phones can give rise to stress, anxiety, or addiction. It especially refers to teenagers. It has been observed that teenagers who use their mobile phones too frequently are more prone to anxiety, sleep disorders, stress, fatigue and lack of concentration, etc. Now ad ays use of mobile phones during driving is one of the main causes of accidents. Talking and texting messages while driving or walking is really a very serious problem with its users.
Number of mobile phones users is increasing day by day but in fact, many of us don’t have mobile etiquette. Its users often speak at a high volume. They are not even least concerned for other people nearby. The ringing of mobile phones at funerals, meeting’s and doctor’s clinics has become very common which is extremely awkward, irritating, and inconvenient for others present nearby. Sometimes it is noticed that mobile phones start ringing in classes even in presence of teachers. It’s a matter of serious concern for the parents. Before providing cell phones to their children they must teach them cell phone etiquette. Due to lack of mobile phone etiquette, jammers are being used at many places like schools, colleges, some areas of offices, hospitals, and other public places.

Technology is here to make life convenient.. Mobile phones are very useful and necessary in present time what we must be careful that they cause less harm to us. Online harassment, summary of findings.
Harassment—from garden-variety name calling to more threatening behavior— is a common part of online life that colors the experiences of many web users. Fully 73% of adult internet users have seen someone be harassed in some way online and 40% have personally experienced it, according to a new survey by the Pew Research Center.
Pew Research asked respondents about six different forms of online harassment. Those who witnessed harassment said they had seen at least one of the following occur to others online:
- 60% of internet users said they had witnessed someone being called offensive names
- 53% had seen efforts to purposefully embarrass someone
- 25% had seen someone being physically threatened
- 24% witnessed someone being harassed for a sustained period of time
- 19% said they witnessed someone being sexually harassed
- 18% said they had seen someone be stalked
Those who have personally experienced online harassment said they were the target of at least one of the following online:
- 27% of internet users have been called offensive names
- 22% have had someone try to purposefully embarrass them
- 8% have been physically threatened
- 8% have been stalked
- 7% have been harassed for a sustained period
- 6% have been sexually harassed
In Pew Research Center’s first survey devoted to the subject, two distinct but overlapping categories of online harassment occur to internet users. The first set of experiences is somewhat less severe: it includes name-calling and embarrassment. It is a layer of annoyance so common that those who see or experience it say they often ignore it.
In broad trends, the data show that men are more likely to experience name-calling and embarrassment, while young women are particularly vulnerable to sexual harassment and stalking. Social media is the most common scene of both types of harassment, although men highlight online gaming and comments sections as other spaces they typically encounter harassment. Those who exclusively experience less severe forms of harassment report fewer emotional or personal impacts, while those with more severe harassment experiences often report more serious emotional tolls.
Key findings
Who is harassed: Age and gender are most closely associated with the experience of online harassment. Among online adults:
Young adults , those 18-29, are more likely than any other demographic group to experience online harassment. Fully 65% of young internet users have been the target of at least one of the six elements of harassment that were queried in the survey. Among those 18-24, the proportion is 70%.
Young women , those 18-24, experience certain severe types of harassment at disproportionately high levels: 26% of these young women have been stalked online, and 25% were the target of online sexual harassment. In addition, they do not escape the heightened rates of physical threats and sustained harassment common to their male peers and young people in general.
Beyond those demographic groups, those whose lives are especially entwined with the internet report experiencing higher rates of harassment online. This includes those who have more information available about them online, those who promote themselves online for their job, and those who work in the digital technology industry.
Where harassment occurs: Online harassment is much more prevalent in some online environments than in others. Asked to recall where their most recent experience took place:
- 66% of internet users who have experienced online harassment said their most recent incident occurred on a social networking site or app
- 22% mentioned the comments section of a website
- 16% said online gaming
- 16% said in a personal email account
- 10% mentioned a discussion site such as reddit
- 6% said on an online dating website or app
Women and young adults were more likely than others to experience harassment on social media. Men—and young men in particular—were more likely to report online gaming as the most recent site of their harassment.
Responses to online harassment: Among those who have experienced online harassment, 60% decided to ignore their most recent incident while 40% took steps to respond to it. Those who responded to their most recent incident with online harassment took the following steps:
- 47% of those who responded to their most recent incident with online harassment confronted the person online
- 44% unfriended or blocked the person responsible
- 22% reported the person responsible to the website or online service
- 18% discussed the problem online to draw support for themselves
- 13% changed their username or deleted their profile
- 10% withdrew from an online forum
- 8% stopped attending certain offline events or places
- 5% reported the problem to law enforcement
Regardless of whether a user chose to ignore or respond to the harassment, people were generally satisfied with their outcome. Some 83% of those who ignored it and 75% of those who responded thought their decision was effective at making the situation better.
Those with more “severe” harassment experiences responded differently to their most recent incident with harassment than those with less “severe” experiences. Those who have ever experienced stalking, physical threats, or sustained or sexual harassment were more likely to take multiple steps in response to their latest incident than those who have only experienced name-calling and embarrassment, 67% vs. 30%. They are more likely to take actions like unfriending or blocking the person responsible, confronting the person online, reporting the person to a website or online service, changing their username or deleting their profile, and ending their attendance at certain offline events and places.
After-effects of online harassment: Asked how upsetting their most recent experience with harassment was, the responses ran a spectrum from being quite jarring to being of no real consequence:
- 14% of those who have experienced online harassment found their most recent incident extremely upsetting
- 14% found it very upsetting
- 21% said it was somewhat upsetting
- 30% reported it was a little upsetting
- 22% found it not at all upsetting
Taken together, half found their most recent experience with online harassment a little or not at all upsetting. But a significant minority, 27%, found the experience extremely or very upsetting.
Women were more likely than men to find their most recent experience with online harassment extremely or very upsetting—38% of harassed women said so of their most recent experience, compared with 17% of harassed men.
Again, there were differences in the emotional impact of online harassment based on the level of severity one had experienced in the past. Some 37% of those who have ever experienced sexual harassment, stalking, physical threats, or sustained harassment called their most recent incident with online harassment “extremely” or “very” upsetting compared with 19% of those who have only experienced name-calling or embarrassment.
When it comes to longer-term impacts on reputation, there is a similar pattern. More than 80% of those who have ever been victim of name-calling and embarrassment did not feel their reputation had been hurt by their overall experience with online harassment. Those who experienced physical threats and sustained harassment felt differently. About a third felt their reputation had been damaged by their overall experience with online harassment. Overall, 15% of those who have experienced online harassment said it impacted their reputation.
Fully 92% of internet users agreed that the online environment allows people to be more critical of one another, compared with their offline experiences. But a substantial majority, 68%, also agreed that online environments allow them to be more supportive of one another. Some 63% thought online environments allow for more anonymity than in their offline lives.

Data in this report are drawn from the Pew Research Center’s American Trends Panel, a probability-based, nationally representative panel. This survey was conducted May 30 – June 30, 2014 and self-administered via the internet by 2,849 web users, with a margin of error of plus or minus 2.4 percentage points.
