How to Write a Winning Data Science Cover Letter (2021)

motivation letter data science

“Why do I need to write a data science cover letter?”

Even if it isn’t listed as a prerequisite, a data science cover letter can still be a vital step in your job application process.

A well-crafted data science cover letter has the power to distinguish you from the crowd. It speaks volumes about you as a professional. What's more, it creates context around your resume and lets the potential employer see beyond the bulleted lists with qualifications and accomplishments.

If written properly, a data science cover letter gives insight into your personality and shows how you’ll fit the company’s team and culture. But, most importantly, it gives you a chance to address a company’s pain-point and demonstrate you have what it takes to offer a solution. And that’s precisely what can move your application to the top of the pile.

How to Write a Successful Data Science Cover Letter?

This thorough data science cover letter guide will help you build a cover letter to land a job in data science from scratch. It will take you through all the necessary steps:

So, quit staring at a blank page wondering what to write. It’s time to call your great storyteller alter-ego and get down to it.

A great data science cover letter should convey that you’re the perfect fit for the company. But you can’t create that impression if you’re not an expert on your target company first, right? So, before you start writing, here’s the initial step you need to take.

Research the company

That’s a must for any job candidate. But it’s especially important in the data science field. Why? Because data science serves a lot of industries. So, you must be informed about how things go down in a variety of businesses, be it security, stocks trading, food innovation, or consulting. Moreover, you should be familiar with their main competitors on the market and the technology your target company uses. And yes, there are clever ways to incorporate this knowledge into your cover letter. (And we’ll discuss how to do that to score yourself some extra points later in the article.) Fortunately, there are plenty of places where you can find all the information you need.

Why Start with the Company’s Website?

The company’s website is the first place you should look. Because it is all in there – services, projects, product descriptions, news… And of course, the “About Us” page and the company’s Mission Statement, where you can find out more about the company culture and their core values. So, here's a quick tip: just learn these by heart. Then make sure you mention some central details in your data science cover letter. That’s how you’ll prove your avid interest in this particular job opportunity at this company. After all, no employer wants to be just one out of many.

Spoonshot’s constant commitment to leveraging AI technology to help solve the F&B industry biggest challenges is why I’m so excited to apply for this position. My 3 years of experience in the food industry and my passion for data-driven research for answering hard questions with data have always driven me forward in my ambition to develop novel techniques to understand food data and build applications to address business problems.

Stackshare, G2 Track or similar sites:

Stackshare and G2 Track are crowdsourced platforms where companies’ team members share the technology they use in their workplace (Including top Fortune 500 companies like Amazon and Walmart). You can explore the company profile to find the application and data tools, utilities, devops, and business tools it employs on a daily basis. And, if you’re proficient in any of those, definitely add it to your data science cover letter.

With 3 years of experience in Tensorflow and Pytorch, I am confident I will be an excellent fit for Cinnamon’s next AI Research Engineer. My hands-on experience in infrastructure construction (AWS, GCP, Docker) and understanding key Machine Learning concepts has provided me with the innovative and technical skills necessary to successfully provide your company with appropriate technical solution approach to client issues.

Social media

Don’t forget to check out the company’s LinkedIn, Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter. These will get you up to speed with their latest projects and upcoming initiatives. Moreover, it might also give you a sneak peek into some recent team events and help you a sense of what the company culture is like.

Annual report

If you’re applying for a job at a publicly traded company, their annual report is a real gold mine. That’s where you can get an insider’s look at the industries the company is involved in, their business segments, a management’s discussion and analysis (MD&A) of the business financial condition… and even results over the past couple of years. You can also find the list of the board of directors, and executives, along with their occupations. In addition, the annual report shares details about their product lines, operating locations, and project leads. Not only is that a bonus for your cover letter, but it will also inform your data science interview preparation .

Read through the job description to tailor your cover letter.

This is super-important. Similar to your resume, you should target the data science position or internship you’re applying for. This doesn’t mean you should go overboard with self-praise. Just tie your skills and education to the company’s business goals, or to a pressing issue you believe you can solve.

I know that HEALTH[at]SCALE’s current plans involve designing and implementing new predictive machine learning and artificial intelligence algorithms to improve outcomes and economics of care. This project is a perfect match for my interests and an exciting opportunity to identify and formulate analytical problems underlying major healthcare challenges and match the world's patients to the best treatments possible. I would be happy to leverage my knowledge of machine learning, optimization toolkits, Python, and R to achieve groundbreaking results with this initiative.

How to Organize a Data Science Cover Letter?

This is the most essential part of writing a great data science cover letter. Your cover letter must be coherent and impeccable. Each paragraph should be well-thought-out to serve a particular purpose. So, you need an opening directed to the right person, an introduction that creates interest and curiosity, body paragraphs that bind your qualifications and skills to the company’s targets and plans for development. And, last but not least, a strong closing paragraph with a must-have call to action. Continue reading…

[Essay]   Motivation letter for scholarship in data science

I have written a Motivation Letter for my master's scholarship in Australia. I need somebody to check my writing whether this could be improved or not. Thank you in advance My passion for data science started when I trained in a short course with a computer institute in (Country Name). I found that data are powerful tools which can help business with analyzing the mass of data and making decisions. My first Master's degree was in Big Data Analytics, but since the course that I studied in the UK was only 1 year, and the undergraduate background is linguistic, so I still thought that the knowledge was not enough to further study at the Ph.D. level. Moreover, when I saw (Researcher name)'s research, it was very close to the research that I was interested in geography and climate analysis. It made me feel more like studying with this professor in order to improve my analytical skills in areas of interest. For this reason, I would like to continue my next degree at the (University Name). Throughout my years of study at prominent educational institutions in the UK, I have proved an outstanding level of academic performance and have shown particular strength in social science study that requires analytical and speculative methods. For my Master‘s dissertation, I studied in the topic “Mental Health Effects of the Fukushima Nuclear Power Plant Disaster to explore the effect of people after the nuclear plant disaster” that how the people affect their mind and work. Also, how many people's lifestyles have changed from before. My thesis, according to my advisor who has expertise in data science many years in the UK and USA. After working in the data analysis area for more than 4 years, I have acquired huge experience in many aspects of these jobs. It gives me a big picture of machine learning and AI should be able to help within the business, such as predicting sales trends, using statistics to predict customer annuity trends of each year, or using it with ETL in the payment process with real-time machine learning. My project at (Company A) focused on tracking car buyers whether they have visited the service center to check the car condition as scheduled or not and analyze potential customers who may come back to buy the car again. I also worked closely with the sales department to predict what future sales prospects will be. After that, at (Company B), I had to study ways to keep overdue tracking customers and analyze a person's behavior so that I was able to assess which debtors were likely to fail to pay the debt on schedule. Therefore, I would like to study how to use machine learning for preprocessing and use real-time data and business reports through automated ETL processes. Furthermore, with the SAS BI project, I joined to analysis of variance and models which was used to relate the factors considered, analyze the differences among the different user requirements and finally perform on the dashboard I strongly believe that a Master in Data Science, with focus on Advanced Machine Learning and Special Topic in Regression, would certainly be valuable in allowing me to catch my goals. At the same time, it would also let me to engage my conceptual and quantitative experiences in analyzing complex business problems, beginning new ways in research. With (Researcher name)'s research in ‘Machine Learning for Extreme Event Detection’. I would also like to study how the future climate in the Asia Pacific region will change as a result of global warming. I wanted to predict the critical damage locations, and data streams using machine learning approaches. I expect this research to be able to calculate storm paths, determine the duration of storms most frequently to strike, and use machine learning techniques to find out where the storm is most likely to have a major impact around the Asia Pacific. With these experiences, I am satisfied I can provide the best assistance to your research area. Moreover, the reputation of high-quality education standards and faculty members are the main factors that have encouraged me to apply for this scholarship. Finally, I desire to catch up on my dream to be a professional in data analyst that will benefit many people. Completing this degree should provide the experience for me to achieve my aspirations.

Motivational letter for Master in Data and Business Analytics

I hereby wish to state my interest for a place in Master of Science programme in Big Data and Business Analytics at ESCP Business School in Paris.

Nowadays, data is a powerful tool for business development, anticipating future environmental problems, and in the handling of disasters. ESCP Business School offers a course that links machine learning and big data. As I wish to research climate change, I plan to study both those fields. This cross-disciplinary program at Paris -1 Sorbonne is thus an ideal route for me to achieve this.

The ESCP’s postgraduate program would allow me to work with instructors who are involved in machine learning for extreme events and big data research, respectively. With them, I can advance the work I have already completed related to how climate change affects businesses. Over recent years, storms have regularly struck Japan, affecting more than 20,000 households. If we can use the data to predict these events, future loss may be decreased and people’s lives can be saved.

At the Fukushima University , I worked with an advisor on climate change from the Fukushima nuclear power plant explosion in 2011. I have studied how the post-explosion climate affects people, data which we imported into Python. I created models which will predict the behaviour and reactions of the people towards the place that they want to live in after an incident related to climate change. Seeing the outcomes of that model was incredibly inspiring to me because I finally realized how carbon energy from nuclear power affects global warming and people’s mental health. I want to repeat this experience. Successfully analysing this study pushes me to pursue climate charts in more depth.

In terms of data-driven predictions, I believe big data is a tool for improving automatic forecasts or decision methods. After I reviewed the ESCP curriculum, I became interested in the statistics and complex models subjects as they are helpful in predicting possible climate change. This course should provide me with an insight into how data is used to analyze the path of storms, and the site of earthquakes, and to visualize the impacted area.

In addition, I want to help people in disaster-prone areas. The first disaster prevention project I wanted to accomplish in my career was to create a natural disaster prediction application, such as a smartwatch or mobile app that would provide people with free notifications. This project uses data from relevant agencies, with the data collected including rainfall recordings and flood simulations, which can predict storms better than traditional systems. I plan to collect data consisting of images, place locations, and cloud coverage that can be processed by AI. The system will simulate climate diagrams to track and forecast flood damage, along with other methods. It can foretell the path of climatic disasters quite accurately and warn people in advance.

I hope you will consider me a suitable candidate for this degree as it will assist me in my career and prepare me to become a professional data scientist.

My motivation to be a data scientist

I am one person who I like been productive, innovative and results oriented. Data science been an interdisciplinary field about processes and systems to extract knowledge or insights from data in various forms, either structured or unstructured, which is a continuation of some of the data analysis fields such as statistics, machine learning, data mining, and predictive analytics, similar to Knowledge Discovery in Databases(KDD) encompasses all of my character traits listed above thus why I see data scientist career path its the perfect job match for me. And involving allot of technology to always produce good results.

What really motivate me to be a data analyst, is the potential I usually see in the big data which is currently available in the internet. From my own point of view in this data, lays brilliant business opportunity if well analysed and this will be the solution to the big problem of poverty and unemployment which is a big challenge to our nation.

In addition to job creation, another motivating factor is my love for technology and doing research. Data science career which is very experimental and involving allot of creativity job, is the perfect career path which undoubtedly match with my hobbies.

Another driving factor, for me to venture in data scientist career path, is my previous job in Kenya National Bureau Of Statistics(KNBS), where I worked as a research assistant in collecting ICT data country wide and also participated in data entry of the data. This increased my desire of been a data scientist to be able to sit and analyse this kind of data and deduce a meaningful information from it.

My believe in that best companies directors, CEO, managers and other top position require data science skills is another motivating factor. This is because they are in a capacity to determine important factors that will lead to success of the business. This include the capability to be able to easily tell his customers tastes, how to optimize production, causes of losses and many other factors from the available data.

Furthermore, my love in love and algorithms and mathematics, can be well quenched when I partake a data science career path which requires someone who got good mathematics background and programming skills with deep roots in algorithms. In addition, my curiosity I also guess will rely help me become a better data scientist.

Lately, I have been studying most of python libraries and framework, and the likes of numby, pandas and motplotlab with conjunction with web scraping library, beautifulsoup really empower me to undertake data scientist career path.

In conclusion, I like learning especially materials related to technology. As a matter of fact, I have solely studied two online courses, this is python and java courses from solo learn community and got certified in the two courses and also in progress with JavaScript course. I do understand that data scientist guys need to self motivated and able to learn on there own, thus, I actually see that I’m a good fit for data science job.

In my current role as a Data Scientist at Microsoft, I have been afforded the unique opportunity to spearhead a project focused on big data processing. This project has allowed me to drastically expand my predictive analytics and behavior analysis capabilities. Through my management, the project has produced substantial profitable results for Microsoft. I am well versed in deriving viable solutions to complex business problems through big data analysis and management.

During my position with Hewlett Packard, I worked extensively with machine learning and data mining techniques to infer marketing insights and forecast sales. 4 Cover Letter Writing Tips for Data Scientists

Learning how to put together a cover letter for the specific job(s) you want will help you land more interviews.

1. Research the company

data scientist computer with data

Hiring managers love to see proof that you’ve researched their company in your cover letter. Highlighting your research shows you’re genuinely interested and know how to take initiative.

There are many resources with information about your target employer you can reference in your cover letter:

Here’s an example of a candidate who connects research about the company’s upcoming expansion to the skills they possess that will help fulfill this goal:

It would be a pleasure to learn more about [Company]’s expansion plans and provide further insight into how my highly developed data analytic abilities, experience managing large data sets, robust predictive analytics, and machine learning skills can help your company achieve these results.

2. Restate quantified bullet points from your resume

To immediately grab the hiring manager’s attention, use metrics to display the tangible results of your data science work. The easiest way to get those metrics on your cover letter is by using the quantified bullets from your resume.

Adding hard numbers puts you petabytes ahead of the competition who only reference broad skills and vague accomplishments on their cover letters. Notice how the above cover letter is immediately strengthened by including the candidate’s quantified resume accomplishments :

Some notable contributions to my previous employers include: Conducted data regression analysis of the relationship between company stock prices and industry trends, achieving a 15% more accurate prediction of performance than previous years Used predictive analytics such as machine learning and data mining techniques to forecast company sales of new products with a 95% accuracy rate

3. Don’t rely on spell check

Employers use your cover letter as a beta test of your attention to detail, thoroughness, and observation skills. Submitting a cover letter with errors could make you fail that test because 49% of hiring managers throw out cover letters that contain spelling errors.

Think of your cover letter as a critical data set — you’d never hit submit without refining the set with different data filtration techniques to identify queries, redundancies, and fragmentation. It’s only logical that you’d treat your cover letter with the same care.

Unfortunately, running a simple Word spell check on your cover letter just won’t cut it. Word’s spell check overlooks many errors — awkward wording and misused homophones, for example. To reduce the margin of error, have a colleague or professional editor proofread and critique your cover letter.

4. Finish your cover letter with a call-to-action

data scientist numerical data

End your cover letter by:

Expressing thanks is important because it emphasizes that you have interpersonal skills to complement your technical skills . Asking for an interview is essential because it indicates you’re seriously interested in working for the company.

Here’s a closing paragraph that shows the candidate’s confidence and eagerness to continue with the application process:

Why Motivation is the Key to Learning Data Science

Set the right goals, create your own curriculum and make a roadmap for learning.

During my journey in studying data science outside of formal education, I found that motivation was the key to navigating the complexity of the subject and not getting disheartened by the wealth of information that makes up the well-publicised data scientist skillset. In the following article, I am going to talk about why motivation is so important when studying data science, explain how you can get and stay motivated, and share with you a copy of my personal learning curriculum and scoring system for learning data science.

Why is motivation so important when learning data science? If you Google something like ‘what skills are needed for a career in data science’ you will be presented with an extensive list of skills.

These will include things like:

Data science is cited as being its own discipline, but each of these areas is a discipline in itself. How then do you learn what appears to be an insurmountable set of skills in a reasonable amount of time? How do you know which skills to learn first? When starting out it can be very easy to quickly become demotivated and abandon your learning in the face of what appears to be an almost impossible task.

“Nobody ever talks about motivation in learning. Data science is a broad and fuzzy field, which makes it hard to learn. Really hard. Without motivation, you’ll end up stopping halfway through and believing you can’t do it, when the fault isn’t with you — it’s with the teaching”, Vik Paruchuri

So why does the discipline of data science appear to need so many skills? A quick job search containing the words ‘data’ and ‘science’ will give you an insight. Below are just a snapshot of jobs I found from a recent job search I did back in July. Each of these jobs would fall under the data science umbrella but each one requires a different set of skills.

How to get motivated

At the beginning of your journey, it is really important to have a plan. To make a plan you will first need a goal. In the face of rapidly changing technology within data science, and job roles and requirements changing regularly, I believe it is best not have a goal that is tied to a specific job title. By the time you get there that job may no longer exist.

Instead your goal should be a purpose, in other words, think about what it is that you want to be able to do. For example, my goal when I was learning data science was to ‘make a positive impact with data’. In order to make the biggest impact in the shortest possible time frame, my learning became focussed around the applied side of data science.

your goal should be a purpose, in other words, think about what it is that you want to be able to do

The most important skills on my list became around software development, data engineering, using existing data science libraries and knowing enough mathematics and statistics to understand what is going on and how to interpret results. If I was more focused on creating new ways to model data then my skills might have been more focussed on a research data science role and therefore the areas where I needed deeper knowledge would differ considerably.

Where to focus

Ok, so you have your goal and you know which set of skills you should be focussing most of your time on. In order to achieve your goal most efficiently, you need to make sure that you only learn the skills that are directly relevant to your goal. Additionally, you will more than likely have a background when transitioning into data science. For instance, you might have previously worked in software engineering or have an advanced maths degree. In which case, there will be areas in which you will already have extensive knowledge.

I recommend that rather than relying on an online course or educational institute to give you a curriculum that you instead create your own. There are so many fantastic resources out there for learning data science, many of them completely free (I previously wrote an article on my top 5 ). You can put together your own curriculum from material that suits your goals, background and learning style.

create your own curriculum

I wouldn’t dismiss online courses but my suggestion is rather than completing one or two of the popular MOOC’s (massive open online courses) to get the certificates. Instead, you pick and choose the relevant parts from a number of different courses. These days more and more course platforms such as Coursera are moving to subscription-based models so you pay on a per month basis rather than having to pay a one-off course fee. In addition to being able to choose the most relevant parts of the course for your individual learning path, you can also learn in a more cost-effective way.

How to stay motivated

Once you have your goals set and your curriculum determined you need some way to remain motivated. I recommend doing three things:

Here is a link to the roadmap I used when learning data science . When you open this you will be asked to make a copy, this will create an editable version on your own Google drive. If you prefer, I have also written a version of this into a series of blog posts they can be found here .

Thanks for reading!

Adept at statistics, mathematics and computer science, data scientists are professionals who collect and analyze high volumes of structured and unstructured data. They examine and experiment in order to find trends and create actionable plans for businesses. The role of a data scientist is to a great extent about the ability to communicate results after a thorough data evaluation, while employing deep learning models. A data scientist's annual mean wage can, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, reach as much as $ 133,900.

What to write in a data scientist cover letter, key takeaways.

Writing a cover letter for a position in data science might feel like walking a tightrope – choosing between buzzwords mentioned in the job description and original (or even innovative) content.

But trust us – you could have the best of both worlds. In fact, a professional data science cover letter needs to have the best of both worlds.

You may have heard that the cover letter is the place to show your achievements , but it’s also crucial to add some keywords. Why? We’ll get there.

First, let’s look at some other things you can mention in your cover letter.

data scientist cover letter example.jpg

So do you really need a cover letter for data science ? The short answer is – yes, you do. A well-written cover letter will complement your resume. It will introduce the hiring manager to your strengths and how they have helped you overcome challenges in the past.

It will also allow the reader to find out more about your projects, incl. the platforms you’ve built and the experiments you’ve designed.

That being said, some of the things a data science cover letter should include are:

Focus on the things you’ve created as a data scientist and how they’ve improved (or aimed to improve) company or team operations.

If you have not created anything on your own yet, talk about the teams you’ve assisted and the impact this has had.

Check out our comprehensive guide on what your cover letter should include for some additional inspiration.

Now let’s move on to the things that will make your cover letter stand out.

Choose the right salutation

Address your cover letter to the hiring manager whenever possible. If you don’t know who they are, try to find out. Look them up on company websites or social media pages. LinkedIn is a great source of information!

However, if there is no way for you to find the hiring manager’s name, you could use one of the following salutations:

No matter which one you go for, make sure to be polite. Overall, the language you choose depends on the position you’re applying for and the company culture.

Craft a strong introduction

Your cover letter’s introduction is the first thing the hiring manager will read. It’s your chance to get their attention and make it to the next stage of the application process.

For this reason, avoid focusing on where you found the job advert and how you decided to apply. It sounds a bit shallow and is what everyone else is doing anyway.

Instead, share what inspires you about the company and the whole data science field. What makes you the ideal candidate? How would having you on the team improve company operations?

You could also leave a sentence or two for your background and previous experience here, but without repeating the summary of your resume.

Emphasizing your data science skills in your cover letter

Although some experts advise leaving your hard skills for the resume and focusing on soft skills in your cover letter , this is not entirely valid for data science cover letters.

Don’t get us wrong, soft skills are extremely valuable and should definitely be present in your cover letter.

But they shouldn’t be the only skills you mention.

The best thing would be to combine soft and hard skills and show how they have helped you achieve your goals.

For example, you could mention how your time-management skills have helped you build an extensive statistical model using Python in just a couple of days. Or how your problem-solving skills have made it easier for you to help the PM team optimize project delivery times.

When it comes to cover letters for data science jobs, hiring managers want to see the depth of your industry knowledge, rather than its breadth. Listing skills aimlessly just wouldn’t work in this case.

Also, make sure to include the skills that are explicitly mentioned in the requirements section of the job advert. This will help you pass Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS) that screen cover letters for certain keywords before passing them on to recruiters.

Communication skills can be linked to your ability to work well in a team and handle conflict easily. Problem-solving skills will show that you are attentive to detail and are always on the lookout for potential issues. Time-management skills prove your ability to meet tight deadlines and work under pressure.

Show that you did your research before applying

You want to point the hiring manager to the fact that you know the company well enough. This works in your favor for two reasons:

It shows you’re aware of common industry/company issues It shows how excited you are to become part of the company you’re applying to (and not just any company out there).

You can also share how your skills will contribute to the company’s growth. This will prove exactly what you can bring to the table.

The final call to action

While a strong introduction is necessary in order to make a good impression, a great conclusion is what makes this impression last .

Thus, using the right words to end your data science cover letter can help you get invited to the next stage of the interview process.

Two things make up a memorable closing line – expressing gratitude for the reader’s time and consideration, and saying that you look forward to hearing from them soon.

Here, you can use traditional phrases such as “Looking forward to hearing from you” or “Looking forward to your reply”.

Pro Tip: In a cover letter email , you don’t need a street address. Your email address and phone number are enough. But—pay close attention to your subject line.

2. Start Your Data Scientist Cover Letter Right

The hiring team won’t read your data scientist cover letter without a reason. The first paragraph is where you give them one. Dig deep to find a fact that holds them like a clickstream. The trick?
