Whenever you use it, a persuasive essay needs you to show out valuable experiences and skills to your audience. Identify your audience

The audience determines the content of the essay. For example, a diverse panel containing readers not from an engineering profession would most likely read an essay from a student joining a university engineering program.

Identify at least three traits that reader would want to see

In an essay for joining a university, the readers expect to find out qualities like academic excellence, leadership and other extracurricular experiences. A company recruiter would search for the experiences relevant to the particular position applied.

The chances of making a connection in an essay increases when the author had the potential to establish how the readers would see his statement.

Write down your relevant experiences, traits and skills

Choose at least three of the most persuasive items, which you initially brainstormed and support the characters with concrete and convincing examples, which would inform your readers of the potential.

If you are trying to sell yourself in a university joining essay, show you leadership skills by stating a time you had succeeded in a leadership position.

Write a strong introductory sentence to get the reader’s attention

The advertising industry understands the power of the right words in the right order – and that’s a power that can be very useful in putting your personal statement together .

To get you started, here are a few useful ideas for your personal statement that copywriters and marketing experts are using to engage, inform and persuade people every day.

1. Grab attention

Advertising revolutionary David Ogilvy once said:

Five times as many people read the headline as read the body copy. When you have written your headline, you have spent eighty cents out of your dollar.”

What he meant is simple: you need to get attention from the outset.

But that’s not easy when someone is reading dozens of personal statements one after the other. While you won’t have a headline to work with, your first sentence needs to pique some interest. You could get there through humour or a clever play on words but one of the most effective techniques is simply to be personal.

You’re already unique and one-of- a-kind so be sure to highlight that immediately, whether it’s the personal story of why you’re so passionate about your chosen subject, or mentioning a specific area of interest that you’re enthusiastic about.

2. Benefits, not features

In copywriting, we understand that people buy things (or buy into ideas) for their benefits.

Take headphones as an example – it’s not a "wide frequency range" that gets people excited, but the promise of hearing and enjoying music like never before.

So, as you talk through your skills and relevant experiences, make sure you’re pushing through to the benefits.

If you’re bilingual, explain how that makes you an incredible communicator. If you’re a sporting hero, don’t forget to emphasise that it gives you discipline and makes you a great team player.

3. Structure your personal statement to sell

In the academic world, we often get into writing habits that aren’t a great fit for persuasion.

Think about the structure of your coursework: you start with an introduction and then build gradually to your big conclusion.

In selling, we don’t ever assume that people will wait around for our big reveal at the end. If it’s important, we put it right at the start where everyone will see it.

A good rule of thumb for structure would be:

It’s your main message followed by the evidence; not the evidence slowly building to the message.

4. Remember you’re talking to a human

Finally, advertisers are always thinking about their audience – and a personal statement should be no different. You’re not writing to an institution, but to a human being.

Think of your personal statement as a (remarkably one sided) conversation and write how you would speak – to someone you want to impress, not your friends. Some useful tips include using contractions (“I’m…” rather than “I am…”) and reading your personal statement aloud to see how it flows.

Your tone of voice can also capture some of the points you want to get across without taking up any of your precious 4000 characters. For example, there’s no need to write about how passionate you are for your subject if you’re able to write passionately about it.

There’s little worse than someone writing who claims to be enthusiastic but then writes with a cold, detached feeling. Aim to let your personality shine through in your choice of words.

I’m Constance, and I’ll show you how to write an essay about yourself in five simple steps. We’ll also write a sample essay together!

Let’s get started!

Write an essay about yourself in five easy steps:

Step 1. Plan the word count for each paragraph.

Planning the word count for each paragraph will be much easier when you know the exact number of words you need for an essay. It will help you organize your ideas and present them clearly and concisely.

Any essay has three key elements:

For example, you can follow the diagram below to easily distribute 300 words across the five paragraphs in a 300-word essay:

Step 2. Choose your essay’s main point and its supporting ideas.

First, you need to come up with one main, overarching point. To do that, you can choose one quality that describes you best. It doesn’t really matter if it is something people can see (your appearance) or not (your kindness, intelligence, etc.) as long as you pick just one.

For example, “ I am a kind person .” This thesis will be enough for now. In the next step, you’ll better understand how to expand it into an entire essay.

Now, divide your topic using the Power of Three to prove your main point using three supporting ideas.

The Power of Three effectively divides an essay’s main idea into supporting points. It is a three-part structure that helps produce your body paragraphs .

Let’s try it for an example of an autobiographical essay with the thesis, “ I am a kind person.”

For example, here are three supporting ideas describing a kind person:

Step 3. Write your introductory paragraph.

Here are the key components of an introductory paragraph in writing any essay:

The first sentence is the introduction, which should catch the readers’ attention and make them want to know the person in the essay (you).

Example of an introductory paragraph about yourself

“Although I am not perfect, others see my good qualities. Many people say I am a kind person because I am a good listener, I always try to speak positively, and I love helping others with their tasks. I like listening to my family and friends when they need support. I also like to use kind words and steer clear of negative and forceful language. And I am always ready to lend a helping hand whenever someone needs it.”

Note that our introductory paragraph goes from a general statement to three specific ideas that support our main idea.

A general statement (our introductory sentence) briefly sets the essay’s context. Next comes our thesis statement and three supporting ideas.

Step 4. Write your essay’s body paragraphs.

Keep this diagram in mind when writing your body paragraphs. Start with a topic sentence, and then provide a brief explanation and example/s.

Paragraph 1

“Many people tell me that I am a good listener. I listen carefully whenever people talk to me, making sure they know I am willing to hear them out and that they have my support. For example, whenever my friends want to talk to me about their problems, I listen carefully and avoid interrupting them. After they talk, I ask questions about their feelings and thoughts about their situation before giving them advice.”

As you can see, our first sentence in this body paragraph is a topic sentence . It gives context to our body paragraph and briefly summarizes it.

Our second sentence describes an empathetic person. And the remaining sentences illustrate our main point (topic sentence) by providing examples.

Paragraph 2

“Regardless of whom I am talking to, I always try to speak positively to make them feel good. I try to talk in a positive manner that inspires and encourages others and expresses my respect and gratitude for them. I also avoid mocking, insulting, or cursing at people. And even in uncomfortable situations, I try to offer constructive feedback instead of complaining or grumbling because I do not want any negative energy to rub off on the other person. The other day I spoke with my friend who had made a mistake. I never criticized her and offered some good advice to help her correct the situation.”

Paragraph 3

“I am always willing to lend a helping hand. I love helping others and finding ways to make tasks easier for them, especially my family. I always wash the dishes and clean our kitchen without my mother telling me to do so. I also like helping my dad fix things in the garage and repair things in our house. And I also like helping my siblings with their school projects and homework.”

Once again, paragraph 3 follows the body paragraph structure. Now, we’re all set for the final step — the conclusion.

Step 5. Write the conclusion.

If you want an easy and quick way to write a concluding paragraph for your essay about yourself, just restate your main idea and its supporting points using different words.

Let’s try this method to write the conclusion for our essay.

“No one is perfect, but it is great if people know you best for your positive qualities. Many people tell me I am a kind person, and it tends to draw them to me. I listen carefully and attentively whenever people talk to me. I speak in a positive manner. And I love helping others and making things easier for them.”

After reading through the scholarship essay prompt, breathe, and make a list of smaller questions you can answer, which relate to the big essay prompt question.

Let’s say the main essay prompt question asks you, “What were challenges or barriers you had to work to overcome?” Then the smaller questions might be something like:

Think of these questions as mini-prompts. They explain your story and help you answer the main essay prompt with more details than if you just answered it without a plan in place.

After considering smaller questions, it’s time to brainstorm your answers. Take out a pen and paper – or open up a document on a computer – and take your time in answering each mini-prompt. Organize your responses in order:

Don’t be afraid to let your strengths, challenges, and personal stories shine through in your essay! Scholarship and admissions committees love to see that you’re self-aware how you can improve as a person, or how you’ve grown because of your experiences. Honest writing can help tell the best stories (in this case, YOUR story).

Since this essay is all about you , you should make your answer as specific as possible! Avoid using generalizations (e.g., “I’m really good at music). Instead, go for more personalized statements (e.g., “My fourth-grade teacher Ms. Matay really inspired me to pursue my interest in the clarinet”). Your personal examples are what will help your scholarship essay stand out among the thousands of applicants..

You’re telling your story, so write from your perspective! You can narrate your story. You can provide an overview of what you learned from your experiences. However you choose to answer the prompt, we recommend writing in an active tone, and using “I” and “me” throughout your essay.

Most students worry about bragging in their essay, but we say go for it! This is your time to shine, so highlight your accomplishments and strengths. Review your essay to make sure that you’re keeping the tone informative and that you’re still on topic. (Brag while answering the essay prompt; don’t just mention random, unrelated but impressive facts about yourself!)You can use this brag sheet where you can brainstorm your accomplishments. While the worksheet is geared toward requesting letters of recommendation , you can still use it to write out your hobbies, interests, college list , and strengths to help you answer your scholarship essay prompt.

Just because it’s an essay doesn’t mean it has to be dry and boring. This essay is all about you, so let your personality shine through. If you’re the class clown, you can use a bit of humor. If you wear your heart on your sleeve, don’t be afraid to show emotion. Trying your best to express who you are as a person will have a huge effect on the admissions or scholarship committee!

If you’re applying for a scholarship, research the scholarship provider. If you’re applying to college, research the school. Understanding what makes the provider/college unique and what their motivations are, will allow you to incorporate that information in your essay. For example, many scholarships are funded by private companies that sell products. You might want to reference those products in your essay. A good example of this is Emily Trader’s essay for the Life Happens organization , where she uses her personal narrative to explain the importance of insurance planning, since that is the mission of the organization (which is funded by insurance companies).

The last step in answering your essay prompt is to double-check your work! One typo can be distracting and cause scholarship providers to scratch their head while reading the essay. In addition to proofreading for typos and grammatical errors, also consider whether the sentence or paragraph structure makes sense. Are you breaking paragraphs in the right place? Are you using topic sentences well to signpost your main ideas? Does the essay flow? Consider these “bigger” structural questions too. You might also want to ask a friend, family member, teacher, or guidance counselor to review your essay. You could spend all day on this, but don’t. Stick to about 15 minutes or your job search will get stuck in the mud.

“This applicant just isn’t a good fit.” Oh no! That’s the death knell. Avoid it like the plague. How? By using what you learned during your research. Once you have a picture of their perfect employee, find three ways that’s you. The key strategy is to find past job achievements that fit the abilities they want.

Say the hiring manager wants an HVAC technician skilled in servicing multi-split and residential systems. Brainstorm your past work accomplishments like this:

Early 2000s kids have a pretty funky paradigm when it comes to how big the ego should be. Generation Z falls right behind Millennials, who have been criticized for being overly encouraged as kids. If Millennials have gotten a bad rep for the participation trophies and such, what’s a Generation Z-er to do when it comes to trying to sell themselves to colleges?

Listen up, Gen Z: a place between humble and prideful exists, and that’s the exact place you want to reach in your college application essays. Here are five “what ifs?” of college essay humble-bragging and what to do about each of them.

If you’re afraid of bragging...

College essays are about selling yourself. If you were selling a pen, you would definitely want to talk to your buyer about the pen’s high-quality ink, super-comfy grip, and trendy appearance. You would never leave any of those amazing pen attributes out because you want the buyer to want the pen. When writing your college essays, think of yourself as the pen. Never, ever leave out something great about yourself because you are afraid of bragging. College essays are the only time you get to talk about all of the wonderful things that make you you without anyone judging you for it. So take advantage!

If you want to come off as confident…

Showing confidence in your college essays might sound tricky, but with the right anecdotes, you can fully achieve that confident aura without literally saying, “I’m confident!” If you’re passionate about something unique that you might not have mentioned in your college app thus far, write about it in the essay. Talk about the time you did an underground production of The Rocky Horror Picture Show even though you didn’t know anyone else auditioning for it. If you thought becoming a ventriloquist as a kid was really cool and eventually gave it a shot, write about it. The best way to sound confident without outright telling the reader so in your essay is to write a story that shows you are confident. That will be more than enough to sell them on you.

If you think you might sound full of yourself…

The “show, don’t tell” rule of writing applies in college essays too. For example, if you are writing an essay about your summer job, never say, “I was the best employee at the grocery store.” Rather, show that you were a great employee by telling a story about the time you caught a shoplifter or exhibited great customer service. You never need to tell the reader you are superior or the best in any way if you can show them instead.

If you feel the need to tell the reader your credentials....

There is a whole other section of the Common App where you list the leadership roles you’ve had and the awards you’ve won. You don’t need to mention them again in the essay portion unless the story you’re telling calls for it. Say you are writing an essay about the time you won a particularly interesting debate for your high school debate team—you can write about your accomplishment without sounding cocky. For instance, rather than saying “I was the best debater on my team, which is why I am captain,” you could talk about the reason you are so passionate about whatever topic you debated that day.

If you’re afraid you don’t sound like a competitive applicant…

The place for competing with what you’ve done in high school is in the rest of the Common App. The place for letting the college know who you are and what you’d be bringing to the college’s community as a person is in the essay. The best way to make yourself more competitive in the essay portion of your application is to write an essay that describes exactly who you are on a day-to-day basis rather than talking about your achievements. There are a few colleges famous for requesting applicants to pick one of their friends and have that friend write an essay about said applicant. While that type of essay might sound pretty nerve-wracking, the takeaway from the prompt is that colleges want to know what someone you hang around all the time thinks of you. Ultimately, a university is looking for a great addition to their campus, and in the case of writing a portrait of your personality in an essay, you should never have to brag, and you should have a lot of reasons to be confident in who you are.

Ultimately, the college essay is all about balance. Don’t tell the reader how great you are—show them instead. Admission officers will rarely be turned off by an applicant who wrote a great story about something wonderful they did, but they might find it a little off-putting if you call it wonderful yourself.

How to Sell Your Personal Essay: A Simple, 3-Step Guide for Beginners

Most essayists agree that the most difficult part of writing essays is finding the right home for their work. The truth is, even a fantastic personal essay won’t sell unless it’s relevant to a magazine’s readership.

So where do you start?

How do you market your essays to magazines? How do you choose the right market? Package your query? And introduce yourself to the editor? And what do you do when it gets rejected?

Tips for (finally!) publishing that personal essay

Before we go into this three-step plan, if you’re really keen to publish (and get paid for!) your personal essay, you might consider enrolling in my personal essay writing course . (That link will take you to The Write Life’s detailed review of the online class.)

But even if you don’t enroll, I want to help you get started… because your story deserves to see the light of day.

So here’s a simple, three-step plan for selling your personal essay to magazines and other publications:

Step 1: Identify your target markets

Long before you think about submitting your essay, create a list of potential markets for that particular story.

You might be tempted to focus only on magazines, but there are some great websites (like YourTango , Skirt! , and Salon ) that run essays. The Write Life also offers a list of magazines and websites where you might pitch your personal essay .

Review several back issues of each title on your list, paying close attention to the types of stories they’ve run in the past. Are the essays long or short? Do they run humor, or are the pieces more serious? Are they written in the first person? Do they include quotes from experts? Have they recently covered the topic you’ve written about?

Keep tabs on your target pubs and get familiar with what they’re running . Tear out the essays you like and study them. Do they follow a particular formula? Is there a subject matter they cover regularly? Is the tone snarky or straight-laced?

Look at the language they use. Pay attention to the adjectives and adverbs in their stories.

Make sure the story you’re submitting matches essays your target publication has already run in terms of style, length, tone, and subject matter. Then — and only then — are you ready to hit “send.”

Step 2: Pitch your completed personal narrative

Start with the first publication on your list of target magazines and hit Google with the publication’s name and the term “submission guidelines.” The publication’s guidelines may include submission info.

Other sites, like MediaBistro and Freelance Success , sometimes disclose editor contact information.

No luck? Hit the bookstore and check the publication’s masthead. There’s usually a phone number listed for the editorial department. Call the magazine and ask which editor handles the column you’re targeting. The receptionist may or may not give you that person’s email address.

If not, don’t worry. There are countless ways to get the information – trial and error being one of them.

The advertising page usually has email addresses, since after all, publications want advertisers to contact them. You can use the configuration listed for the advertising manager (e.g., [email protected]) and address it to the appropriate editor using that format ([email protected]). If you receive a bounce-back message, it’s time to turn to outside sources for help.

Unless I know an editor well, I typically start my email submissions the same way: In the subject line, I write “Column Name Submission: Essay Title.”

Once you have the subject line, demonstrate that you have read their publication and call out one or two of your favorite pieces. Then come up with a short introduction about you, your publication credits, and your story — no more than three or four sentences. Finally , paste the entire essay in the body of the email .

If there’s a news hook to my piece, or there’s a particular reason why I think it’s a good fit for that particular publication, I’ll write another sentence with those details. Something like: “The story is particularly relevant to your readers because it involves prescription drug addiction – a growing concern for women in your target demographic of [insert statistics].”

Step 3: Don’t take rejection personally

If your essay hasn’t sold, you have to face the reality that either it’s not that good, or that you haven’t knocked on enough doors.

It doesn’t mean you aren’t a talented essayist, it just means you might have to rework your story, try to explore the topic further, or find new markets that might be interested in your piece. Writers who publish a lot of essays submit a lot of essays!

Another reason essays get rejected is simple supply and demand. Most editors have an influx of essays waiting to be read, especially since fewer publications are running essays. And if you’re an editor who has 12 essay slots a year and you receive 1,200 essay submissions a month, well, you do the math.

Your job is to increase your odds by doing your homework and making sure your piece is a good fit for the magazine you want to pitch.

And before you send, be sure your essay is in the best possible shape. So triple check for typos, superfluous words, and your clear take-home message.
