13 reasons why we need to end violence in schools, no child should be afraid to get an education..

- Available in:
Schools should be a safe space for children to learn and grow. But for half of the world’s teens, this isn’t the case.
Millions of children experience violence, bullying and threats in and around the classroom, which can have lifelong effects on their physical and emotional health.
To protect this and future generations of children, we need to come together to demand change to end violence in schools. Here are 13 reasons why:
- Half of world’s teens experience violence in schools . Around 150 million students between the ages of 13 and 15 have reported experiencing peer-to-peer violence in and around school.
- Nearly 720 million school-age children live in countries where they are not fully protected by law from corporal punishment in schools . These children are unprotected from physical punishment by teachers and other authority figures.
- Globally, more than 1/3 of students aged 13–15 have experienced bullying . Based on available data, bullying is one of the most common types of violence reported in schools.
- Children who are already marginalized are especially vulnerable to bullying . Factors that increase a young person’s vulnerability to violence include disability, extreme poverty, ethnicity and sexual orientation or gender identity.
- In 39 countries in Europe and North America, 17 million young adolescents admitted to bullying peers at school.
- One in three students aged 13–15 is involved in physical fights in schools . Physical attacks by fellow students are most common among boys, while girls are more likely to become victims of psychological or relational forms of bullying.
- There have been at least 70 fatal school shootings over the past 27 years .
- Cyberbullying allows perpetrators to remain anonymous, but has tangible repercussions . Victims of cyberbullying are more likely than other students to use alcohol and drugs, skip school, get poor grades and have low self-esteem and health problems.
- An estimated 158 million children aged 6–17 live in conflict-affected areas where classrooms are often no safer than communities . Children going to school in conflict zones are forced to risk their lives to get an education.
- Globally, the cost of violence against children adds up to US$7 trillion a year . This cost undermines investments in health, early childhood development and education.
- Violence perpetuates violence . Children who grow up around violence are more likely to re-enact violence as young adults.
- Violence has lifelong consequences . Toxic stress associated with repeated exposure to violence in early childhood can interfere with healthy brain development, and can lead to aggressive and anti-social behaviours, substance abuse, risky sexual behaviour and criminal activity.
- Violence in schools is preventable . Students around the world are stepping up to demand the safety and education they deserve. It’s time to follow their lead.
Don’t let violence be an everyday lesson. Find out how you can demand change to #ENDviolence in schools.

According to Carquinez Review " A gun in the home increases the probability by 300 percent that a household member will be killed, and by 500 percent that a family member will commit suicide." How many more deaths will it take to realize guns should be restricted? In Article after article you read the pros and cons of handguns. Now the question is which one out weighs the other, the statistics of deaths or the right to be able to protect yourself? If you were to ask me a month ago where I stood on gun control, I would have told you it is the right of every American to bear arms. Now after looking at six different articles in Texts and Contexts on gun control and searching the web, my view on gun control supports banning guns, because too many lives are taken from this deadly weapon. With guns there is more crime and with concealed weapons there are more homicide rates. In the article "Tale of Two Cities" by Drs. J. H. Sloan, A. L. Kellermann, D. T. Reay, J. A. Ferris, T. Koepsell, F. P. Rivara, C. Rice, L. Gray, and J. LoGerfo, you see an example of two cities Seattle and Vancouver, which have common a geography, climate, history, similar schooling and unemployment rate. A big difference between the two cities is their handgun laws. Seattle handguns can be purchased for self defense and after a waiting period you can attain a permit to carry a handgun as a concealed weapon. In Vancouver it is the complete opposite, handguns are not permitted as a concealed weapon. J. H. Sloan etc. all state, "Over the seven-year study period, 388 homicides occurred in Seattle (11.3 per 100,000 persons-years). In Vancouver, 204 homicides occurred during the same period (6.9 per 100,000 persons-years) (252)," Looking at these two cities you can see that with concealed weapons there are 184 more deaths. Reinforcing the fact that concealed weapons are the problem is that the rate of homicides by knives and other weapons besides firearms in Seattle and Vancouver were almost the same.

How it works

Guns in America are ruining our society. Watch the news any day and you will most likely see either a school shooting ora shooting at some type of gathering. For some children going to school is horrifying because they are extremely disturbed by the school shootings that are going in our society. Children as young as kindergarten are learning how to act in the case of a school shooting. Yet, guns are killing innocent people by being able to have certain guns up for purchase, allowing people with health problems to access guns easily, and how easy it is to purchase a gun in the United States.
People with health problems are able to purchase guns so easily. As a community, we should be more protective when it comes to buying guns. We should be checking future gun owners background checks before letting certain people buy or even shoot a gun.
The reason that people with health issues should not be able to purchase or shoot a gun without a thorough check background check is that some people are psychotic and don’t care for themselves and or others and that can result to deaths of innocent people. Usually, it takes around 3 days to one week to get your background checked by the FBI. Since it only takes around three days to get a background check checked that might affect the reason why there are so many shootings because they might not be thoroughly checked.
Guns are ruining our society. As a society, we need to stop gun violence.

“Stop the Violence Don’t, Text and Drive” successfully employs ethos, logos and pathos to focus attention to its audience. Logos is employed to give the targeted audience the idea of the dangers associated with distractive driving in a very clear tone. The slogan, “do not text and drive” is the logos of the ad that informs the audience on the importance of safe driving. On the other hand, the punch on the face depicts the use of pathos where the punch symbolizes the pain triggered. Additionally, it shows that the punch is not as frightful as the car collisions. Lastly, ethos is rendered as evidenced in the endowment of the name of the sponsor. Through this, the audience is informed of the intentions of Ecovia; promotion of safe driving.
Road accidents are prevailing in the modern society with the sad reality that they are often triggered by very simple and similar errors as evidenced in driving while texting. The “stop the violence: don’t
text and drive” ad attempts to warn its audience on the dangers associated with various distractions while driving. The fact that the ad not only shocks but also strikes the audience implies that it is efficient specifically through the usage of an image that is captivating thereby enabling the audience to understand the dangers associated with careless driving. The ad clearly reveals that the rationality of the modern advertising is entirely semiotic thereby depicting that the success of modern ads as well as their perception to the intended audience often reflects a culture that has chosen impression over realism.
