Why School Uniforms Should Be Required

School is a place to learn, grow and acquire the necessary fundamentals to become a productive adult in society. I believe school uniformity create an environment where kids can learn and focus on their education. School uniforms should be required in grades pre-kindergarten to twelfth grade. I recognize that school uniforms create structure and discipline, equality and a sense of belonging amongst each other, and lastly school uniforms are cost effective. There have been many on-going debates for and against school uniforms for years. In the following paragraphs I will support my claims on why school uniforms should be required. In high school back in 1997 our school did not require for us to wear uniforms. Everyone was free to wear what they wanted and school staff was quite lenient with the dress code. Amongst my peers I noticed a lot of kids seem to have no discipline in their life, school was not a priority for them. Our school had a very high drop-out rate, tardies and absences were also high. I believe that if our school would have required the students to wear uniforms, it could have made some type of difference. According to one surveyed parent pro school uniforms, "School uniforms send a signal that school is something to be serious about. Researchers have actually found that school uniforms don’t make students better behaved. According to a study of more than 4,500 students, those who wore a school uniform did not have fewer behavior problems or better attendance. Forcing students to wear uniforms lead to more problems and misbehavior instead of encouraging discipline. Students could get into trouble if they did not wear their uniforms correctly. Many kids in today’s society cannot stand the thought of someone telling them what to do, especially what to wear. Instead of encouraging respect, uniforms may cause rebellions. For example, in 2009, a group of students at John A. Ferguson Senior High School rebelled against their school uniforms. Instead of following their school uniform requirements, the students wore what they thought would be a better school uniform to school. Not only uniforms don’t earn schools the respect from its students, but it may also lead to more problems.

It helps students to behave seriously within the walls of the institution as well as outside since they are aware that people will recognize their school uniform.

However, some people believe that there is no link between school uniform and academic achievement. Some also say that uniforms make children unimaginative since they cannot express themselves through their clothes.

On the other hand, school uniforms help to reduce conflicts between students which result from differences in their social status and class. It is difficult for students to gauge their peer’s financial condition if they are wearing school uniforms. But the other group maintains that students belonging to wealthy families try to show their status by wearing expensive accessories like watches, pens, etc. or perfumes, and such other things. In this case, the school uniform has no purpose.

It is difficult for low-income families to buy school uniforms every passing year, and it may create a strain in their budget. Hence, school uniforms are not cheap and can feel unnecessarily expensive for low-income families.

Hence, it isn’t easy to choose a side when it comes to the practicality of school uniforms. But, in my opinion, I cannot imagine my school without any uniform. Even though we may not have liked it when we were in school, looking back, it brings back nostalgic memories.

In some Asian countries, students' uniforms are like sports suits, and they are very comfortable and lively. Of course, different schools have different rules. When students rise the national flag, they must be wearing the uniforms to show the respect to our own country. However many students don't like school uniforms. Many people say that there are too many rules in school. It is not easy to follow all the rules and standards of the school. This will increase the burdens of the students. School uniform is not only to facilitate the management of schools, but also conducive to the physical and mental health of students. Imagine such as non-uniform school uniforms, students will be part of each other in the dressing competition, so that both the impact of their studies, but also give families the financial burden on the family economy at the same time not too good of their classmates will also create a psychological contusion. Every school in the world has its own regulation about the way to wear. Some schools require students to wear the uniform, while some allow them to wear casual clothes. Besides, many people think that students should wear casual clothes to feel comfortable when studying. However, in my opinion, wearing school uniforms is better for three reasons below.

The first and most important reason is to make everyone to feel equal, and make the class less straggler. When students are allowed to wear casual clothes, they will wear what they like, and what they buy.

Many students wear expensive clothes, while the others wear the cheap ones. By the wearing way, they know that who are rich, and poor. Therefore, it will make a difference between students and create discrimination, which means there are two group that exist in a school: the wealthy and the poor. Besides, wearing many kinds of clothes can make the class look like a mess. For example, few students wear red clothes, some wear blue clothes, while some wear clothes that have many colors, and they all study in a class.

When teachers look the whole class, they will feel that it is not so different from a big and colorful mess. Thus, I think schools should require students to wear uniforms to prevent this situation.

The second reason is that wearing uniforms can help everyone know they are students and their schools. This is very convenient in many aspects. For instance, if a student do a lot of good things such as helping old people, or returning the things that they have collected, people will think that the student are taught very well, and the school that the student are studying is very good at education.

Thus, the school’s reputation is spread out, which is very helpful for the school. Besides that, when students do bad things, their schools will know more easily and have suitable ways to punish them.

The third reason is that wearing school uniforms is a beautiful tradition and very meaning to students. The uniform has existed for thousand years and many schools still keep it to now. Wearing uniforms is a beauty of schools’ cultural, so there is no reason to remove that tradition. In addition, the uniforms show the prettiness of every student. Male students look stronger, and female students look more beautiful while wearing uniforms. Moreover, wearing them in a long time make students to feel sympathetic with them, and to love their uniforms and schools more.

In conclusion, wearing school uniforms is better than wearing what students want. It is not only convenient, but also very important to the school and students. Besides that, it is also a beautiful cultural of a school. Therefore, although few people do not like to wear them, students should wear them, and feel proud of them because it is the symbol of their school.

Why students should have to wear a uniform

The idea of uniforms started a few centuries ago, and the first educational place to use them was Christ’s Hospital in the United Kingdom in the 16th century (Baumann and Krskova 1005). Nowadays, different stakeholders in the education sector such as the parents, administrators, educators, leaders, teachers, the community or public, and above all the students themselves have varied opinions on whether to wear or not to wear uniforms by the students. There is a heated debate over adoption of a formal dress code policy in learning institutions. When that is going on, meanwhile the education standards in the majority of schools are something of concern. They are below expectations of many. There are numerous cases of student indiscipline, poor attendance, and negative attitudes among other discouraging things. One may ask when the rain started beating us. Everyone should go back to the drawing board and review some of the education policies that have been neglected and yet very impactful such as the policy on wearing uniforms. This paper discusses pertinent points that justify the need for students to wear uniforms. Most of the education needs in schools can be easily attainable when the uniforms are made compulsory and part and parcel of school culture (Brookshire 66).

School uniforms provide a powerful statement of belongingness among the learners in various ways. Many children enjoy this rite of passage from home to school especially when they are joining the school for the first time. There is a sense of excitement putting that unique garment that identifies one to a particular community of students. There is that feeling of oneness when students are in uniforms unlike when they are in home clothing. The value of a community is enhanced when they all appear the same without contradictions regarding the mode of dressing. Regardless of their home backgrounds and family status in the society, student uniforms are the common denominator. It bonds them to feel like one big family that shares common challenges and successes. Apart from the aspect of belongingness, the learners also develop self-esteem. The uniforms help to foster self-esteem among students whereby the external differences among them are dissipated (Spencer par.4). Also, it is reported that uniforms aid in reducing poor attendance of learners attributed to inferiority and others making fun of those students from lower class families. Those who are truants and tend to evade school can easily be spotted or identified by the public when in uniform and appropriate action is taken.

School uniforms help in reducing social pressures among the students. That is said so because most teenagers are at a developmental stage of social identity where they examine themselves and what they want to achieve. That coincides with them trying to compare themselves with their peers. On top of the list of things they compare themselves with are the dresses. Some force their parents to spend so much on clothing to appease and look fashionable before their friends and peers. School uniforms can help the learners mostly in high schools to resist the peer pressure of purchasing trendy clothes. The uniform policy has helped to curb social pressures among many students. According to the US Education Department, about 49% of the US public schools in 2014 supported the idea of a formal dress policy or uniforms (Brookshire 12). It should be remembered that the uniform trend began in earnest in the 1980s and picked up momentum in the 1990s.There were many cases of gang violence related to dress and hence the need to adopt a formal dress policy.

It is also widely reported that students who wear uniforms are more disciplined than those who do not. School uniforms have a psychological impact on the minds of students that they are bound by a common code of ethics and rules. It instills a mental entitlement to obey what the institution demands of them. In fact, most surveys have revealed that schools that do not have a formal dress code policy are the ones that lead in student unrests or indiscipline cases. It has been discovered that students who wear uniforms listen better and are ready to comply with what is required of them (Baumann and Krskova 1003).The students tend to pay attention to instructions given to them by the administration and the teachers hence boosting discipline levels. It can be remembered that the former US president Bill Clinton provided the momentum for school uniforms in his famous state of the union speech in 1996 (Wilde par.4). That was heightened by increased violence in public schools because of designer jackets. School uniforms are therefore a necessity to curb violence and enhance student discipline.

About the point of discipline, it can also be concluded that uniforms help to develop or nurture favorable personalities in students. As the students wear uniforms, they learn how to comply with the school rules or regulations. In the long run that helps in shaping their personalities. They become law-abiding citizens as they step out there in the society. That cannot be said with the same breath for non-uniformed students. Most of them are easily lured into drugs and gang violence (Reynolds 36).

If there is one thing that has become an issue in the society today is the issue of social class variance. Not all students come from similar social class backgrounds. Some come from wealthy families, middle class, and others from low-income families. In most public schools, there is mixed demographics regarding the social class status of students. If they are allowed to wear home clothes, then there will be a discrepancy in their clothing. It is the school uniforms that help to reduce the economic and social barriers among the students (Wilde par.6).It bridges the social gap mindset that the students are different. It makes them perceive one another as sister and brother from one family regardless of their home social status backgrounds. It is a leveler of children from all social class backgrounds.

Students should also have to wear a uniform because it identifies them as students and not just an ordinary person in the society. It promotes both student and school identity. That blazer, that shirt, those pants or sweaters are the ones that each school is identified with. A student in uniform is likely to evade danger or be protected by the members of the public in case of trouble. Students in uniforms are given priority in public places because of the identity portrayed by the uniform. Well, designed school uniforms enhance pride in the students to continue being identified with such a school. It makes the learners take pride in how they look like. There is that team identity that is developed when the students are in uniform. They identify themselves with the successes and challenges that their school faces. It influences psychological urge that promotes synergy and working together among the teaching staff, management, and the students.

It has also been confirmed by various student responses that uniforms help them to save time. That comes about in the morning when they have to dress and come to school. In comparison to home clothing, they do not have to waste time to decide on what to wear every day. Most teenagers especially girls are cautious of how they appear in public (Baumann and Krskova 1011).They may waste time grooming in the morning to appear presentable. That contributes to lateness and ultimately poor performance. Those with identity crisis will spend so much time to get it right in fashion sense. Time management is a crucial component for achievement in life. Uniforms help the students to focus more on academics rather than on their appearance which saves time.

Several studies have revealed that there is a strong correlation between school uniforms and the performance of students. Students who wear uniforms are more disciplined than their non-uniformed counterparts in most schools. Both discipline and academic success complement each other. It, therefore, translates that uniformed student’s pay more focus on their academic performance than in their clothing outlook. Those who do not wear uniforms waste time and energy by investing so much in their clothes and how they will appear in them. School uniforms are a student motivator in learning. They create that psychological feeling that the students have a common objective which is to excel in their studies. The uniforms aid the students to remain focused and avoid distracters that may be influenced by non-formal dress codes (Spencer par.7).

When it comes to safety matters, the school uniforms aid in alleviating intruders who may have wrong intentions in the school compound. The students in uniforms will make it easy for an intruder to be identified and appropriate action is taken. There have been many cases of shootings in US schools recently. That points to the fact that there is a security lapse somewhere. Home clothing can easily be used to conceal firearms and other crude weapons, hence the need to promote uniforms in the learning institutions.

During these hard economic times, no parent would want to spend extra money on clothing to appease or fall into the demands of their children. The home clothing encourages students to compete on the latest fashion trends which are arguably expensive for the parents. Parents of students who do not wear uniforms have to set aside a huge budget for new outfits the entire academic year. The changes in weather and fashion trends influence their frequency of purchase. In other words, wearing uniforms is cost-effective, and the saved money can be used on other vital errands. Normally two or three sets of uniforms are required in a single year at an affordable price, unlike the many clothes that would be demanded by the non-uniformed students at high prices.

In conclusion, this paper is of the opinion that students should wear school uniforms and that all the stakeholders in the education sector should positively support the formal dress code policy in schools. The notion that academic success is in mind and not in appearance is invalid based on recent research findings in psychology. There is a huge impact that uniforms play in psychologically influencing a sense of purpose and commitment to academic success, which is paramount than anything in school. All the points discussed to justify the reasons why students should wear uniforms. The formal dress code improves the climate of a school and thus enhances its academic performance. The benefits of school uniforms are numerous, and therefore it should be embraced by all and sundry. The idea of a school uniform cannot be thrown away because the uniforms play a massive role in the lives of the students.

Even though it may not be safer, they can deal with what is going on faster so it could result in less people getting injured. Also it’s easier for the staff/ administration to enforce a dress code. When children are at a school without a dress code people wear whatever they want. There will be more kids wearing what they want which would be harder in enforcing a dress code. By having school uniforms most people will follow it and less people will disobey it. Lastly, parents also like school uniforms. Some parents don’t like the fact on kids dressing how they want, but school uniforms will make the school a better place and keep the parents happy. Why Are School Dress Codes Important

Students need to be taught at an early age that we should respect one another no matter what we wear ; similarly students need to be taught that what a person wears does not define who they are. When students learn to respect others no matter what they wear it makes them be more open minded, and makes them more respectful and kinder. One example is that when people wear what they prefer and feel more comfortable in people will respect them more because they were taught from a young age to respect each gender no matter what they put on their bodies. Many people believe that school uniforms decrease bullying but actually in the article ¨School uniforms¨ it states that in a 2007 study school uniforms increased the number of assaults by 14 and school incidents rose by 12%. If we did not have school uniforms we will learn to respect one another and be kinder which will help us in the

Why School Uniforms Should Be Required In Public Schools

Two, by wearing school uniforms it can create a positive culture and climate on campus, instead of be rude, disrespectful and all riled up. Lastly, by wearing school uniforms this can end the feud between the rich and poor, because everyone would be dressed the same. So all people should start caring about what their children are wearing to school and possibly think about a school that has a good environment and have school uniforms. This matters because school uniforms will create a great environmental future for all

The Negative Impact Of Uniforms On American Society

Indirectly school uniforms will help increase the safety in schools. Most gang members are perceived that they are in a gang through the color combinations of their clothes. Take, for instance, blood represented by the color red and hell represents the color black. There won 't be any room to promote gang activity if everyone is wearing that same school uniform. The department of education was reported, when school dress became a mandatory policy in public schools, incidents of vandalism went down by a massive 69% and cases of assault decreased by a whopping 85%, which are both know forms of gang activities. Students are against the concept of wearing school uniforms because they believe they would be unable to express their personality through the combinations in clothes, but safety outweighs individuality. In addition to safety, the perception that students are individuals through their clothing is a folk tale. Everyone shops at the same shops that are trending in the market and various people buy the same clothes. Every person looks almost alike. In a similar way, there is no difference between people wearing similar clothes and students wearing the same uniform. On top of that, a student’s individuality should not be based only upon on his or her appearance but in accordance with his/her grades, attitude, and behavior. School uniform will help refocus the student’s attention towards education.

Blue Valley Argumentative Essay

For example, when the Long Beach Unified School District made students K-8 wear uniforms, suspensions in elementary dropped by 28%, suspensions in middle school dropped by 36%, there was a 51% decrease in fights with students K-8, and a 34% drop in assault and battery in kids K-8. This shows that the crime in the Long Beach Unified School District decreased after uniforms were implemented in grades K-8. It also prevents gangs from forming on campus and a display of gang colors. Also it helps identify intruders in school because everyone will be wearing a uniform, so the intruder will stand out and it will help keep the school safe. The last reason that it stops most crime is, it may discourage students from committing a crime which will also help keep the school and students safer. This shows that when schools implemented school uniforms it stops most

Individuality Vs Conformity

School uniforms could eliminate all competitions, or even the feeling of low self-esteem stemming from the perception that some are more or less inadequate than others. School uniforms could even terminate the hierarchy that over runs schools all together. Though it may seem school uniforms fix problems and are generally regarded as a “good thing”, not all share in the enthusiasm. According to the article, Individuality vs. Conformity: The Issue Behind School Uniforms, there is an argument against school uniforms that states, “...forcing a uniform on students limits the choices they can exercise in this aspect of growing up and rebelling against authority...(Caruso, P. (1996)).” Do uniforms correct faulty behavior or increase the risk of creating it? It seems there is no quick fix to behavioral problems, but school uniforms could offer a chance at eliminating certain behavioral rebellions, angry outbursts, classroom disruptions, etc… Nothing is 100%, not even uniforms are perfect, but they are a step in the right direction for taking behavioral delinquency into control and slowly poke holes through the rugged armor it has acquired. The same can not be said for school violence. It is not something one should take lightly, especially when it comes to

Persuasive Speech On School Uniforms

A school uniform would make schools safer. The idea of wearing uniforms to schools was originally introduced to reduce violence in schools in 1996 by the Department of Education (Underwood, 1). School uniforms reduce violence because it puts the students on an equal level. When everyone is wearing the same thing it makes it harder to put differences between the people without getting to know them first. If we spent more time trying to get to know someone then it would be less likely that we would be mean to them. Another reason that schools would be safer is that the

The Disadvantages Of School Uniforms

In the article of Dr. Alan Hilfer from 2009, “Disadvantages of a School Uniform Policy” stated that “We need free thinking children of to become thinkers of tomorrow, not droned who will continue making the mistakes of previous generations”(Hilfer, 2009). Feelings on school uniforms seem to differ as much as the reasons for having them, hate it, or love it. Recent studies done in the University of Alabama states that: “Student Uniform use was not significantly correlated with any of the school commitment variables. In addition, students wearing uniforms did not appear to have any significantly different academic performance” (Brunsma & Rockquemore, 1998). The problem whether schools should still be continuously implemented is a highly debatable topic. Uniforms nowadays are acting as collars to students, and schools are holding the leash. Children and adolescents in school are in that adapting period of life, they want to find out and learn about consequences on their decisions. Schools need to create an environment that encourages creativity and inspire them to break out of their shell. The tradition of uniforms is a repetitive and binding curse that needs stopping. This paper tackles how school uniforms produce more problems than it could handle.

Thesis Statement On School Uniforms

Many students that know uniforms will be beneficially, but don’t agree with school uniforms will continue to disagree with implementing them. It can be easily agreed that school uniforms may take away their self-expression in school, but what matters more in school is the way of learning. It can also be agreed that many students do not accept the self-expression of their classmates and make fun of them. Students, parents, and school administration should be able to recognize the benefits that school uniforms come with.

The fact of the matter is that everyone is different because no two people are alike in this world, but then again, this is a learning institution we are talking about.

Importance of School Uniform (Pros)

Here, we will look at specific factors that can be considered significant in students wearing uniforms.

As earlier mentioned, by wearing school uniforms, the rate of bullying in schools has significantly reduced. Bullying occurs due to cultural differences amongst students. You will find that different cultural groups have unique beliefs and values that are unique to one another. The act of bullying occurs as students tease those of different cultures from them. By wearing the school uniform, it reduces the victimization since all students appear the same.

School uniforms help in saving parents money since they are cost effective. Wearing trendy and designer clothes every day to school is an expensive affair, especially to those parents that strain to make ends meet for their children. When it is back to school, there are fewer things to buy more so the everyday clothes. The uniforms can be purchased once a year and be worn all through the year.

School uniforms go a long way in promoting the school’s spirit. A spirit of togetherness and unity is inspired. You can witness the spirit when the students are participating in school activities such as competitions outside of the school. The uniform automatically ignites a higher sense of school pride.

The primary reason as to why the society and schools emphasize on the uniforms is to create a sense of equality for the students in the learning institutions. Not all students are privileged and come from wealthy families. By wearing uniforms, social status for more unfortunate students will no longer be an issue. It leaves students who face low self-esteem with one less problem to make them worry.

Wearing school uniforms encourages discipline in school. It is a constant reminder to the students of where they are, making them pause and think of the consequences most of the times before impulsive actions.

Where there are pros, there have to be cons as well. Wearing uniforms limits some factors for both the school and the students. There has been a growing debate regarding this in recent times, to the point that some schools don’t require their students to wear any uniform. However, the number of such schools is way smaller in comparison to those still requiring every child to be dressed in proper school uniform. All in all, some of the cons of having students wear school uniform include:

Self-expression and creativity of students get hindered. Their identity is stripped, and a lot of students tend to feel oppressed.

The issue of comparison, more so for the girls, is inevitable. Who wears it best is what they strive to achieve with the school uniforms and it may even create a more significant divide than when not wearing uniforms.

Resentment of the students towards the school and its administration happens because they feel like they have been forced to wear the uniform. A majority of students do not want to wear the uniforms, and as a result, behavioral problems around the school occur.

School uniform acts as a band-aid to more significant issues. There are those who believe that the uniform is meant to try and solve much more significant problems like bullying and school attendance. The clothing that students wear has a small impact. The more prominent issues should get addressed on a higher platform rather than laying the entire burden on uniforms.

Even after some well-written outline of essays on school uniform, the argument on whether a school uniform violates the students’ right of expression will remain a never-ending discussion. But the truth is, wearing of uniforms should all depend on the circumstances and the image a given school is trying to portray. Regardless, the importance of school uniforms seems to win the day today even as I write this conclusion and even after so many school uniform essays have been written. On a final note, we should try and find permanent ways of solving the growing issues faced by students. We should not rely on school uniforms to swipe the problems under the rug, this does the students no good.
