Why Medical Assisting is My Dream Job
Ask any student in medical school what their dream specialty is and most of them would probably give you a highly-recognized field of expertise, such as general surgery, oncology, pediatrics, and more. Very rarely would you hear someone say that they dream of being physician assistants instead of becoming the physicians themselves?

I am part of this rare breed. I believe that becoming a certified medical assistant is a very rewarding career choice. There is something very noble about being behind the scenes, contributing to the big picture in very detailed and functional ways. No one really pays much attention to the physician assistant taking vital signs, blood pressure, and other clinical tasks. But I am convinced that they are the unsung heroes of the healthcare industry. I also hold the conviction that no specialist or doctor would be successful at their job without the support of a skilled assistant.
Medical assistants handle a lot of the legwork in a healthcare facility on a daily basis. From getting all your basic information to handling laboratory testing, drawing blood, filing documents, and scheduling appointments, they work alongside doctors to ensure that they have all the information that they need from the patient. They also need to have a high level of accuracy to ensure the proper diagnosis of patients and that the appropriate treatment or procedure is prescribed.
A lot of people find this kind of work too tedious and boring, but this is the kind of job description that honestly excites me. My administrative skills are strong and I believe these will help me in becoming a successful medical office assistant who can take on many responsibilities and be on top of them all. I understand why it’s so crucial to update patient charts and to be able to report to doctors accurately. I am also a structured person and thrive in following a consistent process to the letter. I also want to be in the medical field. All of these personal characteristics and passions are what made me decide to become a medical assistant.
Overcoming the Challenges of Medical Assistants
At the same time, I understand that I cannot thrive in this role if I romanticize the job duties. I know that while my skill set is perfect for the job, being in the medical field is downright challenging. There are long hours, intense shifts, unexpected emergency situations, and mystery illnesses. Career advancement is vague in this area of medicine as well. I understand why this is not a popular career choice.

However, I also know that a thriving passion can sustain one through the difficult parts of work. I personally love the idea of being someone’s right hand. I am a natural-born follower, and I’m good at routines. I know that the clinical duties of this role seem boring and repetitive, but I know that every single part of the legwork contributes to the overall well-being of the patient. I have learned that it’s important to see the task as more than just jotting down numbers for someone else to interpret. I should see it as getting all the crucial information to get the patient to a place of good health.
Even though it is not a road to becoming a surgeon or any high-paying health specialist, I would need to master medical terminology to be able to converse with doctors and patients well. I am determined to make the most of my education to get a solid foundation in the healthcare field and excel in the job I have chosen to pursue. In my spare time, I am also thinking of volunteering at our local clinic to gain some experience and develop a deeper appreciation for the role.
I hope that this career path I have chosen will lead to many more lives healed, and many more doctors being empowered. I also hope that as a medical assistant, I will play my small but unique part in improving health care in my sphere of influence. I also want to change the perception that a medical assistant does not deserve much appreciation and recognition. It’s time we honor them.
Why Do I Want To Be A Medical Assistant (Short Essay Sample)
Whenever I tell my peers that I want to become a healthcare office assistant, they give me this confused look. I often get asked, “Why become the assistant when you can be the doctor?” There is an underlying perception that the role of medical assisting is not so valuable in the healthcare industry, but I beg to differ.
I believe that without medical assistants, any hospital or clinic would fail to function well and care for patients accurately. They are the busy bees who work tirelessly behind the scenes, making sure that patients are received well, properly briefed, and promptly cared for. They are the hands and feet of doctors who are only able to see patients at a lesser frequency. They administer the protocol physicians recommend, and they glean all the information doctors need to be able to diagnose and treat people.
The reason why I want to pursue this role in the healthcare industry is simple: I want to make a difference in the lives of patients by making sure they are treated well. I want to concretely practice compassionate care for all people.

As a requirement for the completion of my course, I had to undertake an internship program. Of course, there are quite a lot of insights that I gained after undertaking my attachment at the Spring St. Dermatology, (73rd) street New York. In line with the specialization of the office I was attached to, I gained much experience in skin medical and cosmetics procedures.
Of the many insight that I got was a new meaning for professionalism and also to appreciate it. I learn that professionalism has to do with observing the ethics related to a given line of work, and maintaining the highest levels of integrity even in the most unfavorable circumstances. The experience imparted on my personal professionalism where I came to learn that it is about having a great personality, and having the knowledge about the concept of being a medical assistant. As such I practiced much professionalism while dealing with the patients such that I got a lot of positive feedback. However, there are always the low moments in everything, and at times I had to deal with angry and upset clients who gave negative comments. Since this is the nature of the job, I had to deal with it professionally. This changed the manner in which I deal with patient presentation. Whether they have negative or positive attitudes, I have to deal with them professionally.
The experience also impacted on the manner in which I relate with my co-workers. Through practical hands on experience of the actual environment that I will be working in, I came to realize that there will always be differing points of view between my colleagues and I. The good thing is that the experience taught me that there is always the good way of dealing with such differences in order to get a positive outcome.
Through the experience, I had hoped that I could gain experience with EKG’s, venipuncture, and urinalysis. However, this was not to be the case since the facility did not have this facility. Nevertheless, I did venipuncture and was excellent at it. In fact, I was frequently asked to do it since I never missed the veins. This was quite exciting and fulfilling on my side. They also called me an expert of doing pre acne extraction procedures; feeling amazing when the doctor asked me to do it. I felt I gain the trust that I was looking for to myself, because I do not have confidence when I started the job. After I familiar the procedures, I performed it professionally though there was not so much on the managerial part. I did not perform the clerical duties at the front desk (phone, billing and filling) but I did lab testing, data entry, instrument inventory, samples inventory and maintaining and organizing around the area. In regard to the computer skills that I learned from school, it was quite helpful but Spring Street site did not use Microsoft Word. I would, therefore, suggest the initiation of medisoft software class, since most medical fields are currently using the same or similar software. Another addition should be the Mac OS because many medical facilities are shifting to Mac OS. Regarding with the time management skills, I could say that the experience taught me to be good on a lean schedule and still deliver the right results. I got to work on time; never got late, and stayed longer hours. This went a long way in improving my set of skills which is a major development in my career.
In addition, I could say that the experience gave me more knowledge of being a medical assistant. It is well known that having the theoretical knowledge of a subject does not mean that an individual has the right qualifications for the job. As such, this was a time for me to gauge whether I am fit for the work I am trained for, and I am proud to say that I feel set for the task ahead. In conclusion, the experience was much of what I had expected to get. There were some low moments for me, especially when I was blamed for something that I had not done. However, this does not disregard the fact that it was an eye-opening opportunity for me, where I had an insight into the real professional world.

Essay on Medical Assistants

This research report is about Medical Assistants. There is no doubt that the main mission of contemporary medicine is to provide high quality medical services to patients of all ages in the most comfortable for them conditions. In such a way, the main thesis is the following: Medical Assistants have a noble vocation, aimed at providing health care for people and improving the quality of patients’ life, in their activity. Thus, the main aims of this project are to observe the activity of Medical Assistants, and to research specific features of their work, explaining the types of knowledge that Medical Assistants explore and the professions to which it leads.
First of all it is important to mention that Medical Assistant is a health care provider who works with a physician or other health professional, and help him in carrying out various procedures and a preliminary assessment of the patient. According to Lindh, et al (2002), “medical assistants perform routine tasks and procedures such as measuring patients’ vital signs, administering medications and injections, recording information in medical records-keeping systems, preparing and handling medical instruments and supplies, and collecting and preparing specimens of bodily fluids and tissues for laboratory testing”. Sometimes the term ‘medical assistant’ may be confused with the term ‘physician assistant’, but it is very important to remember that these terms are quite different in their essence, because physician assistants have a qualification to perform specific clinical, therapeutic and surgical procedures, while medical assistant have other range of their duties.
Observing the range of duties any medical assistant has in his/her work, it is important to mention that exactly medical assistant provides a great number of direct patient care and various medical support services in healthcare facilities. Medical assistants may be considered a kind of versatile healthcare personnel, and that is why they can be assigned on the performing of both administrative and clinical tasks. It is impossible to overestimate the necessity of medical assistants to many healthcare facilities, because they are able to reduce human resource expenses by handling both administrative and clinical duties. BLS (2009) mentioned that exactly to such versatility the demand for well-qualified medical assistants has increased in many times in recent years.
The mission of medical assistants is to improve the health of patients, who come to them for medical care, providing a wide range of medical services of consistently high quality. Medical assistants are called for to balance the goals and interests in achieving the social, medical and economic efficiency. Thus, they can work in various healthcare facilities, ambulatory healthcare centers, such as physician’s office, obstetrics or gynecology clinics, dental clinics, dermatology clinics, etc.
To fulfill all the necessary responsibilities medical assistants must have a certain amount of knowledge and skills that they receive in the process of theoretical and practical training. Observing the types of knowledge that Medical Assistants explore, we can mention that specific courses for this occupation cover not only medical disciplines such as anatomy, physiology, medical terminology, but also accounting, keyboarding, recordkeeping, transcription, and even insurance processing. Students who are going to become medical assistants may learn various types of clinical and diagnostic procedures, specific features of laboratory techniques, pharmaceutical principles, and, of course, be able to provide the first aid in any situation. In addition, each medical assistant may also be an expert in ethics, medical law, patient relations, and even in various office practices.
It is true that disciplined, executive and accurate medical assistant is a good assistant to the physician, and only combining their efforts both health professionals will achieve success in treatment. To be a good assistant to the physician in any healthcare facility, medical assistant needs to understand the meaning of every physician’s appointment and perform it not blindly, but conscientiously and consciously. To do this, a medical assistant should remember that it is not enough to be content with the knowledge gained in medical school, because it is important constantly multiply them to achieve a really good result in own practice by reading medical literature. This principle becomes all the more necessary in the frames that medical science is advancing all the time; more and more new treatments and diagnostics appear in it each year. However, medical assistant also should be able to understand the meaning and the need of a doctor’s appointment for the patient, and has important arguments to convince the patient in the benefits of an assigned treatment. All the doubts that a medical assistant has in own practice should be shared with a physician without any hesitation.
The behavior of medical assistant will be correct, if he/she places the interests of the patient before his/her own ones; while his/her personal interests, for instance, the fear of punishment for a mistake, gain the second position. Breen, Plueckhahn and Cordner (1997) stated that as much as a doctor, a medical assistant is responsible for the mistakes in the work before the court, but not judicial responsibility should guide the behavior of medical assistant, because the most influential responsibility is exactly moral responsibility.
As it was previously said, medical assistant must be able to provide first aid not only in a healthcare facility where he or she works, but wherever she/he is at the moment: at home, outdoors, in transport – everywhere. A refusal to provide first aid may be punished by moral and judicial responsibility.
Adding the question about professional opportunities that medical assistants have in their job, Verlin (2006) mentioned that “working towards gaining good qualifications like a degree, certificate or diploma will work wonders towards getting a top class job in the healthcare industry.” For instance, qualified medical assistants will always find many opportunities opening up for them in various specialized health care sectors, and these career opportunities may be advanced in many areas, such as medical or clinical office manager, transcription supervisor, healthcare administrator, lead medical assistant, executive medical office secretary, clinical team leader, etc. In addition, it is obvious that it is more important to medical assistants to continue own education in this area, because it is much better to become a Certified Medical Assistant than occupy the role of the general medical assistant.
To sum up, we have observed the necessity of medical assistants in our contemporary medical sector, explained the types of knowledge that medical assistants explore and the professions to which it leads, and proved that the main role of medical assistants is to restore, preserve and promote the health of people, and to save their lives in spite of any difficulties on their way.
