In Romeo and Juliet, which is more powerful: fate or the characters’ own actions?

In the opening Prologue of Romeo and Juliet , the Chorus refers to the title characters as “star-crossed lovers,” an allusion to the belief that stars and planets have the power to control events on Earth. This line leads many readers to believe that Romeo and Juliet are inescapably destined to fall in love and equally destined to have that love destroyed. However, though Shakespeare’s play raises the possibility that some impersonal, supernatural force shapes Romeo and Juliet’s lives, by the end of the play it becomes clear that the characters bear more of the responsibility than Fortune does.

Though the Prologue offers the first and perhaps most famous example of celestial imagery in Romeo and Juliet , references to the stars, sun, moon, and heavens run throughout the play, and taken as a whole that imagery seems to express a different view of human responsibility. In Act 1, scene 4, Romeo says that he fears “some consequence yet hanging in the stars” when he and his gang approach the Capulet’s ball. In his next mention of stars, however, Romeo doesn’t refer to their astrological power. Rather, he uses the image of stars to describe Juliet’s otherworldly beauty. Most of the subsequent celestial images in the play follow in this vein, from Romeo’s love-struck comparison of Juliet to the sun to Juliet’s own wish to “cut [Romeo] out into little stars” when he dies. Throughout the play, these astral images are more often associated with the two lovers than with divine fate, emphasizing that, as the play’s action escalates, we cannot simply place the blame for the tragedy on some impersonal external force.

It’s true that Romeo and Juliet have some spectacularly bad luck. Tybalt picks a fatal fight with Romeo on the latter’s wedding day, causing Capulet to move up the wedding with Paris. The crucial letter from Friar Lawrence goes missing due to an ill-timed outbreak of the plague. Romeo kills himself mere moments before Juliet wakes up. It’s also true that the lovers aren’t solely responsible for their difficult situation: Their friends, their families, and their society each played a role in creating the tragic circumstances. However, even if we allow that fate or some other divine force caused Romeo and Juliet to fall in love at first sight, thereby setting the action into motion, Shakespeare makes it clear that the characters’ own decisions push that situation to its tragic conclusion. Either Romeo or Juliet, it is suggested, could have halted the headlong rush into destruction at any of several points.

Romeo’s propensity for rash action gets him—and his beloved—in a lot of trouble. His impulsiveness has made him a romantic icon in our culture, but in the play it proves his undoing. From the very beginning, Shakespeare cautions us not to view Romeo’s sudden fits of passion too idealistically—after all, Shakespeare makes a point to show that Romeo’s love for Juliet merely displaced another, earlier infatuation. Through his hasty actions, Romeo arguably drives the play toward tragedy more aggressively than any other character. He climbs over Juliet’s wall the night they meet and presses her to bind herself to him. He kills Tybalt in a blind rage. Then, thinking Juliet dead, he poisons himself. Romeo never thinks his actions through, and his lack of foresight makes him responsible for their dire consequences.

Though Juliet proves a strong-willed partner for Romeo, she bears less of the blame for their joint fate because she, at least, is wary of the speed at which they progress. In the balcony scene, she compares their love to lightning, which flares up suddenly but can just as quickly fade into darkness. Unlike Romeo, each of Juliet’s fateful choices is a logical response to a situation. She agrees to marry him because she needs evidence that he is truly committed to her. She takes the potion not out of despair, but because she believes Friar Lawrence’s plan will set things to rights. Though each of her choices ends up getting her and her lover deeper into trouble, those choices are at least the result of sober, careful reflection. Only when she sees her beloved dead does she succumb to his style of rashness, killing herself out of grief.

Romeo and Juliet concludes with a strong condemnation of the characters’ actions. In the closing family portrait, the Capulets and the Montagues gather around the tomb to witness the consequences of their absurd conflict. Even if you don’t believe that Romeo and Juliet could have saved themselves, you must admit that their families’ blind hatred caused the situation, not the gods. As the Prince notes, even “[t]he sun for sorrow will not show his head” on that tragic day—even the heavens are pained at the human foolishness they see below.

The main theme of Romeo and Juliet tragedy revolves around three things– love, family, and conflict. The play Romeo and Juliet tragedy has been borrowed from the Italian author Arthur Brooke’s tale The Tragical History of Romeus and Juliet but the work of William Shakespeare has made its place in the history of English literature. It is considered that from the Romeo and Juliet tragedy the dramatical skills of William Shakespeare were more recognized which makes Romeo and Juliet notorious. From the eighteenth century till the current date Romeo and Juliet tragedy has influenced many other stories.

The main plot of the Romeo and Juliet tragedy centers around two teenage lovers who have been referred to as Star crossed lovers and this label directs to the inevitable fate they meet. The two feuding families namely the Montague and the Capulet possess deep hatred towards each other but Romeo and Juliet perdue their secret love against this strong dislikes of their families continuing for decades. The Capulet organized a party where Juliet was to meet County Paris as her suit where Romeo along with his two friends Benvolio and Mercutio enters in disguise and in this incident the two adolescents fall in love and promise each other to be together forever. Here Juliet,’s nurse helps her to flee and get into an eternal relationship of marriage.

Hereby chance Juliet’s cousin Tybalt comes to know about the secret meeting and vows taken by the two young lovers and fate befalls on them. Tybalt sends a challenge to Romeo for a brawl which Romeo refuses but his friend Mercutio gets angry and ready to fight Tybalt. Romeo tries to stop the fight and by this time Mercutio gets killed by Tybalt. The death of Mercutio makes Romeo furious and in turn, he kills Tybalt. Count Paris came to know about the murder and banished Romeo. Juliet, unaware of these incidents, was worried about Romeo being late to meet her. Later, as the Capulet family mourns, the death of Tybalt delays the marriage of Juliet with Prince Paris. Friar Lawrence arranges for spending a night with Juliet with Romeo before he leaves for Mantua. Juliet’s parents are angry as Juliet refuses to marry Paris as they are unaware of Juliet’s secret marriage with Romeo.

Friar Lawrence helps Juliet by providing a sleeping draught which will make her unconscious for some hours and will be proved to be dead in front of the Capulet family and in the meantime Romeo will be made aware of the secret plan. Fate betrayed again where the messenger could not reach Romeo for an epidemic in the city. News of Juliet’s death reached Romeo who couldn’t withstand the news and decided to kill himself. He manages to get poison from an apathy shop in Mantua and reaches Verona in the grave of Juliet.

Here Romeo meets Paris who came to grief over Juliet’s death and kills him. After killing Paris Romeo drinks the poison and kills himself. Friar Lawrence comes in due course to rescue Juliet as per their plan but finds Romeo’s dead body lying beside Juliet’s grave. Juliet, after returning to her senses could not bear the pain of Romeo’s death, stabbed herself and died beside Romeo. Later the two feuding families arrive knowing about their children’s death and ultimately leads to peacemaking and both the families promise to erect monuments in the memory of Romeo and Juliet and their eternal love story.

In the play Romeo and Juliet, Romeo is the tragic hero. The theme of tragedy plays a great role in the play Romeo and Juliet. By analyzing Romeo’s tragic flaw, his noble birth, his series of poor decisions, the suffering of Romeo that extends beyond himself, it is evident that Romeo and Juliet is classified as a tragedy.

A person must posses certain qualities that classify one as a tragic hero. One of these qualities is the noble birth of a character. In the play Romeo and Juliet Romeo being the tragic hero, possesses that quality. Romeo is a Montague, and in the city of Verona the Montagues are a well known and respected family. It is a known fact that the Montagues are of noble birth when it is said by Benvolio in Act 1, Scene 1, Line 141: “My noble uncle.” Benvolio is referring to Lord Montague, who is the father of Romeo. The Montagues are also a rich family, and that is one of the reasons for the respect for Romeo.

In the next scene the audience realize that Romeo ha fallen for another, which is Juliet. “For I ne’er saw true beauty till this night.” – Said by Romeo in Act 1, Scene 5, Line 52.The audience can quickly identify Romeo’s flaw of falling in love too quickly and deeply when he forgets about his feelings for Rosaline and concentrates on Juliet.

Juliet too realizes that Romeo’s love for her was too fast when she said : “It is too rash, too undvis’d, too sudden.”( Act 2, Scene 2, Lines 117-118). If Romeo did not go to the party he would not have met Juliet. It was unnecessary for Romeo to try to stop the fight between Tybalt and Mercutio. If Romeo did not try to stop the fight, Mercutio would not have been killed, and the fight between Romeo and Tybalt would not have existed. Romeo says in Act 3, Scene 1, Line 94 : ” Courage, man; the hurt can not be much.”, when he tries to stop the fight between Tybalt and Mercutio. Romeo makes the wrong choice when he decides to fight Tybalt for the death of Mercutio. “Either thou, or I, or both, must go with him.”( Act 3, Scene 1, Line 1290. This quote refers to Romeo’s challenge for Tybalt.

If Romeo did not fight Tybalt he would not have been banished from Verona. Another one of Romeo’s poor decisions was the decision to commit suicide, which was also his last decision. “O true apothecary, thy drugs are quick, thus with a kiss I die.” Said Romeo in Act 5, Scene 3, Line 120, right before he died. If only Romeo decided not to drink the poison he would have been alive to see Juliet wake. All these decisions caused Romeo, the tragic hero, to end his life tragically. The suffering of the tragic hero also extends beyond himself. Due to the actions of Romeo, Mercutio and Tybalt died. “When he tries to make peace between them and Mercutio is fatally wounded, Romeo remarks pathetically ‘I thought out for the best.’ “- Comments Phillis Rackin author of Shakespeare Tragedies. “Mercutio’s soul is but a little way above our heads”, remarks Romeo after Mercutio’s death, caused by Romeo. Tybalt’s death also results from Romeo’s poor actions. After Romeo’s death Lady Montague dies of a heart attack. Lord Montague says to the Prince in Act 5, Scene 3, Line 209: “Alas my leige, my wife is dead tonight.” Because of Romeo, Juliet decides upon her own death. She argues with her father, drinks the potion, and later stabs herself, all for the love for Romeo. Verona’s peace is disturbed by all the commotion of the fights between the Capulets and the Montagues, caused mainly by Romeo. There is still no peace in the streets of Verona.

The families of both Romeo and Juliet suffer over the loss of their children, and everyone is unhappy. Since Romeo brought suffering upon people rather than himself, he is truly the tragic hero and makes the play Romeo and Juliet a tragedy. It is obvious that in the play Romeo and Juliet, Romeo is the tragic hero. This is evident when the audience see Romeo’s noble birth, his tragic flaw, series of poor decisions he made and the fact that through his actions he brought suffering upon other people. Most plays, stories or novels have a moral. The moral of Romeo and Juliet is not to rush into things like love, hate and important decisions. All people should think twice about every decision they are making. From all the evidence stated in this paragraph along with the paragraphs above it is said that Romeo and Juliet is classified as a tragedy.
