“The development of full artificial intelligence could spell the end of the human race” says Stephen Hawking, a significant figure in the field of Cosmology, Artificial Intelligence (AI) and theoretical physics (Cellan-Jones, 2014, para 1). But today in the modern AI world which is mostly known by many, as the fourth industrial revolution, the AI researchers refute and under-value Stephen Hawkings intimidating predictions. They keep themselves blind over the facts that AI brings forth more threats than benefits to individuals and societies. According to Rouse (2019), Artificial intelligence (AI) is the simulation of human intelligence processes by machines, especially computer systems. These processes include learning, reasoning and self-correction (para.1). This essay’s main concern goes on how an increase involvement of AI will impact individuals, organizations, and labor workforce in China. The problems which AI carries with itself in China are, increased rate of unemployment and immeasurable amount of funds being continuously invested in it. It will also look forward to different solutions to tackle these problems, including government providing subsidies to unemployed people and upgrading the educational system in China in order to confront the rapid technological changes. And in the end, it evaluates these solutions and finds one highly recommended solution.

AI is now rapidly changing the face of businesses and multinational organizations in more than 75 developed countries including China, which is currently the second country after United States leading in AI development (citation). International Monetary Fund reports that ‘Asia holds 65% of the worldwide responsibility for employing manufacturing robots where China accounts for 50% of Asia’s total industrial robot usage’ (Danmeng & Jia, 2018, para.5). China is already facing unemployment problems with over ‘50 million citizens currently unemployed’ (Trading Economics, 2019), mainly due to its enormous population with highest population rate of ‘1.393 billion people’ (Countryeconomy, 2018, para.1), and it is estimated to reach up to ‘1.433 billion people by the end of 2019’ (WorldOMeters, 2019, para.1). China is currently one of the countries, with most foreign Multi-National Company (MNC’s) factories running in it due to its inexpensive land, therefore, MNC companies with enormous funds adds more profit by minimizing their cost of production by replacing labors with robots. Apple Inc. in Eastern China has found that ‘Autonomous machines in China costs 130,000 yen per year ($19,000) which is equivalent to the cost of multiple workers doing the same job within a shorter amount of time’ (Danmeng & Jia, 2018, para.5). CEIC (2019) estimated that “On average, the monthly income of a middle-class citizen in China stands around US$330.” In addition, CEIC (2019) also reports that “China’s Labor Force Participation dropped to 68.72% by December 2018.” Due to an unpleasant wage rate and unfair work pressure, Chinese labors passion for work also disappears every year, making them directly dependent on Chinese government for financial Aids. As result of poor wage given to employees and firms maximization of profit by replacing human workforce with automated machines, the nuisance of unemployment continues to grow with an unstoppable rate.

AI bring forward multiple barriers and problems with its daily upgradation and improvement which mainly includes high unemployment rate and lofty cost of starting AI firms. Firstly, Danmeng and Jia (2018, para.4) states that “30-40% of the labors has been replaced with AI machines over the past three years”; their research makes it very specific that every year China has been witnessing an immense decline in unemployment rate with advanced AI. According to Ren (2018), 2.3 million employees working in industrial sector are either going to lose their jobs or more than half of them will be reassigned to new jobs before 2027 due to disruptive AI technologies. (para.1). “Chinese scholars and psychologists treat the situations of unemployed people as Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PSTD)” (Yang, 2019, para.3). This extreme downward unemployment rate has brought up significant consequences which includes rage, stress and depression due to poverty amongst unemployed. Yang (2019) also points out that social anger and unrest are also some of the emotional problems caused due to unemployment (para.2). Additionally, Yang (2019) also states that besides psychological suffering, unemployment has also been responsible for many physical problems like headaches, stomach ache and hair loss (para.3). Unemployment holds the middle and low-class citizens of China in a severe health condition which also decreases the nations productivity growth.

Secondly, China must be aware of the exorbitant amount of money invested in AI firms which effects the economy of China directly and indirectly. According to Barhat (2018) “Investors poured $4.2 billion into more than 200 Chinese A.I. companies between 2012 and 2017” (para.1). Following this, Barhat (2018) also reports that, an addition of $1 trillion is going to be invested to build and upgrade their AI industry within the next 30 years. Chinese investors are on a constant run in the flight for the latest technology in AI industry, with apparently more than $1.42 trillion invested and to be invested funds, which leads to more imbalance in their economy, which then leads to corruption and deceit amongst government heads. According to Distinguished Fellow and & Adjunct Professor at Carnegie Mellon University’s College of Engineering, Vivek Wadhwa, ‘Governments can’t make innovation by throwing money at AI firms, this will only lead to more corruption and bureaucracy’ (Barhat, 2018, para.11). Therefore, investing boundless amount of money in AI can easily destroy an economy of a nation by bringing almost irreversible imbalance in high, middle and low-class citizens of China.

There are limited solutions available to be addressed in order to tackle with the problem of AI related unemployment. Governments and Ministry of Education plays an important role in introducing new laws and policies as a solution to fight against this consequence in China. Firstly, government can start providing subsidies like UBI Policy and introduce more public jobs. Subsidies should be provided by the government to the unemployed in order to motivate them to start working again. According to Arthur (2016), “Universal Basic Income (UBI) is a payment made to all adult individuals that allows people to meet their basic needs. It is made without any work or activity test” (para.1). Government can introduce the UBI policy in China to improve the financial status of the middle and low-class citizens for a reasonably short-term. This policy encourages the citizens to get their self-esteem back and motivate them to start working again. “UBI takes the weight off the unemployed citizens shoulders by ensuring that everyone has enough money in their pocket for survival and also helps to keep money flowing through the economy, particularly after tens of millions of jobs have been disappeared” (Stollery, 2018, para.12). The Chinese government can also start providing public jobs to the unemployed to decrease unemployment rate. According to CompTIA (2019), “U.S. economy added 75,000 jobs in May 2019” (para.10). China can launch public organizations to promote and employ low-class citizens in public job for their survival and to balance the nation’s economic too.

Secondly, China’s Ministry of Education can directly bring an impact on the future of work by confronting present students with rapid and immense technological changes. According to McKinsey Global Institute report ‘around 40 to 160 million women worldwide may need to change their profession by 2030, which will often be replaced by high-skilled roles’ (Press, 2019, para.3). Most of the occupations which requires least qualifications are evidently getting and going to be replaced with AI robots and other automated machines. This predicted situation then leaves behind only those jobs which demands higher skills and talents. CompTIA (2019) state that over 89900 software and application developers, 25000 computer user support specialists, 22100 computer systems engineers and architects, 20100 computer system analysts and 17600 IT project managers were required by companies worldwide only during the month of May 2019 (para.11). Therefore, Ministry of Education can adapt present students with future intense technological competition by increasing the education level in schools and colleges through upgrading educational systems and hiring highly qualified teachers and mentors.

Artificial Intelligence has been increasingly developed since 2010 with the aim of bringing ease in work industry with both pros and cons attached to the idea from every aspect of life. Evidently, AI’s effect on future of work, is a very broad and complex situation which undoubtedly requires multiple approaches by governments and ministries in order to minimize its negative impacts on both individuals and society. Firstly, implementation of subsidy policy by government would be a financial support to unemployed people in short run. According to Brown (2015), many countries like Australia, Austria, France, Germany, Poland Sweden and UK has been witnessing the success of subsidy programs implemented (para.7). However, this approach requires huge amount of funds for a long period of time to aid 2.3 million unemployed low-class citizens, which can lead to economic imbalance or it can even crash China’s economy in worst case scenarios. Furthermore, it also increase laziness and procrastination to those who are not willing to work but are still applicable to access governmental subsidies due to their unemployment status. Secondly, Chinese government can provide numerous public sector jobs to their below average class citizens. This opportunity keeps them busy with work and helps them earn adequate income for living and covering their daily expense for survival. In addition to that, Caponi (2017) state that, increasing public sector jobs also assists in decreasing the unemployment rate (para.1). Regardless of work opportunities and adequate income, public jobs can lead to loss of creativity and poor IQ among below average class people, which leaves them far behind from the daily necessary education. Additionally, Caponi (2017) reported that, by promoting and offering more public jobs, overall productivity of an economy can face a downward trend. Lastly, Ministry of Education can have an impact directly on current and future consequences with AI related work by increasing the level of education in high schools and colleges. C. Yi, a professor at the Tianjin University of Finance and Economics reports that Ministry of Education must reform China’s education system that will be able to train students to develop skills needed in the future and adapt themselves to new AI based jobs (Global Times, 2018, para.18). This initiative taken by ministry of education brings multiple advantages. One of the advantages of upgrading educational system is that it leads to an increase in creativity. This initiative can also bring down the unemployment rate significantly, which then supports nations economic growth on a long run. On the other hand, this process will be time consuming and requires huge amounts of funds. All the different solutions emphasized has positive as well as negative outcomes. However, the best course of action would be initiatives to be taken by ministry of education like increasing education level in secondary and high schools to prepare students for rapid technological changes. Evidently, Ministry of Education plays a significant role in challenging the upcoming consequences of AI in the near coming future.

To conclude, Artificial Intelligence and its effect on future of work is a huge, and entirely complex concern which will bring a vast change to the future of work. AI’s growth can have a massive negative impact on individuals and societies in China, which includes high unemployment rate and lofty amount of money invested in AI companies manufacturing process. This essay suggests three overall solutions which includes introduction of subsidy policy, addition of public jobs in the economy by the government and upgradation of educational system by ministry of education. After evaluating these solutions, it highly recommends that ministry of education must change educational system not only because it confronts students with rapid technological changes, but it also increases young peers’ creativity. This also helps economy grow in the long term by minimizing the unemployment rate in the future.

AI, or artificial intelligence, seems to be on the tip of everyone’s tongue these days. While I’ve been aware of this major trend in tech development for a while, I’ve noticed AI appearing more and more as one of the most in-demand areas of expertise for job seekers.

I’m sure that for many of us, the term “AI” conjures up sci-fi fantasies or fear about robots taking over the world. The depictions of AI in the media have run the gamut, and while no one can predict exactly how it will evolve in the future, the current trends and developments paint a much different picture of how AI will become part of our lives. 

In reality, AI is already at work all around us, impacting everything from our search results, to our online dating prospects, to the way we shop. Data shows that the use of AI in many sectors of business has grown by 270% over the last four years.

But what will AI mean for the future of work? As computers and technology have evolved, this has been one of the most pressing questions. As with many technological developments throughout history, the advancement of artificial intelligence has created fears that human workers will become obsolete. 

The reality is probably a lot less dire, but maybe even more complicated. 

What is AI?

Before we do a deep dive on the ways in which AI will impact the future of work, it’s important to start simple: what is AI? A straightforward definition from Britannica states that artificial intelligence is “the ability of a digital computer or computer-controlled robot to perform tasks commonly associated with intelligent beings.”

“AI” has become a catchall term to describe any advancements in computing, systems and technology in which computer programs can perform tasks or solve problems that require the kind of reason we associate with human intelligence, even learning from past processes. 

This ability to learn is a key component of AI. Algorithms, like the dreaded Facebook algorithm that replaced all our friends with sponsored content, are often associated with AI. But there is a key distinction.

As software journalist Kaya Ismail writes, an algorithm is simply a “set of instructions,” a formula for processing data. AI takes this to another level, and can be made up of a set of algorithms that have the capacity to change and rewrite themselves in response to the data inputted, hence displaying “intelligence.”

AI will probably not make human workers obsolete, at least not for a long time 

To put some of your fears to bed: the robots are probably not coming for your jobs, at least not yet. 

Given how artificial intelligence has been portrayed in the media, in particular in some of our favorite sci-fi movies, it’s clear that the advent of this technology has created fear that AI will one day make human beings obsolete in the workforce. After all, as technology has advanced, many tasks that were once executed by human hands have become automated. It’s only natural to fear that the leap toward creating intelligent computers could herald the beginning of the end of work as we know it. 

But, I don’t think there is any reason to be so fatalistic. A recent paper published by the MIT Task Force on the Work of the Future entitled “Artificial Intelligence And The Future of Work,” looked closely at developments in AI and their relation to the world of work. The paper paints a more optimistic picture. 

Rather than promoting the obsolescence of human labor, the paper predicts that AI will continue to drive massive innovation that will fuel many existing industries and could have the potential to create many new sectors for growth, ultimately leading to the creation of more jobs.

While AI has made major strides toward replicating the efficacy of human intelligence in executing certain tasks, there are still major limitations. In particular, AI programs are typically only capable of “specialized” intelligence, meaning they can solve only one problem, and execute only one task at a time. Often, they can be rigid, and unable to respond to any changes in input, or perform any “thinking” outside of their prescribed programming. 

Humans, however, possess “generalized intelligence,” with the kind of problem solving, abstract thinking and critical judgement that will continue to be important in business. Human judgement will be relevant, if not in every task, then certainly throughout every level across all sectors. 

There are many other factors that could limit runaway advancement in AI. AI often requires “learning” which can involve massive amounts of data, calling into question the availability of the right kind of data, and highlighting the need for categorization and issues of privacy and security around such data. There is also the limitation of computation and processing power. The cost of electricity alone to power one supercharged language model AI was estimated at $4.6 million.  

Another important limitation of note is that data can itself carry bias, and be reflective of societal inequities or the implicit biases of the designers who create and input the data. If there is bias in the data that is inputted into an AI, this bias is likely to carry over to the results generated by the AI. 

There has even been a bill introduced into Congress entitled the Algorithmic Accountability Act with the goal of forcing the Federal Trade Commission to investigate the use of any new AI technology for the potential to perpetuate bias. 

Based on these factors and many others, the MIT CCI paper argues that we are a long way from reaching a point in which AI is comparable to human intelligence, and could theoretically replace human workers entirely.  

Provided there is investment at all levels, from education to the private sector and governmental organizations—anywhere that focuses on training and upskilling workers—AI has the potential to ultimately create more jobs, not less. The question should then become not “humans or computers” but “humans and computers” involved in complex systems that advance industry and prosperity. 

This paper is a fascinating read for anyone hoping to dive deeper into AI and the many potential directions in which it may lead.

AI Is becoming standard in all businesses, not just in the world of tech

A couple times recently, AI has come up in conversation with a client or an associate, and I’m noticing a fallacy in how people are thinking about it. There seems to be a sense for many that it is a phenomenon that is only likely to have big impacts in the tech world.

In case you hadn’t noticed, the tech world is the world these days. Don’t ever forget when economist Paul Krugman said in 1998 that “By 2005 or so, it will become clear that the Internet’s impact on the economy has been no greater than the fax machine’s.” You definitely don’t want to be behind the curve when it comes to AI. 

In fact, 90% of leading businesses already have ongoing investment in AI technologies. More than half of businesses that have implemented some manner of AI-driven technology report experiencing greater productivity.

AI is likely to have a strong impact on certain sectors in particular:

The potential benefits of utilizing AI in the field of medicine are already being explored. The medical industry has a robust amount of data , which can be utilized to create predictive models related to healthcare. Additionally, AI has shown to be more effective than physicians in certain diagnostic contexts . 

Automotive:

We’re already seeing how AI is impacting the world of transportation and automobiles with the advent of autonomous vehicles and autonomous navigation. AI will also have a major impact on manufacturing, including within the automotive sector. 

Cybersecurity:

Cybersecurity is front of mind for many business leaders, especially considering the spike in cybersecurity breaches throughout 2020. Attacks rose 600% during the pandemic as hackers capitalized on people working from home, on less secure technological systems and Wi-Fi networks. AI and machine learning will be critical tools in identifying and predicting threats in cybersecurity. AI will also be a crucial asset for security in the world of finance, given that it can process large amounts of data to predict and catch instances of fraud. 

E-Commerce:

AI will play a pivotal role in e-commerce in the future, in every sector of the industry from user experience to marketing to fulfillment and distribution. We can expect that moving forward, AI will continue to drive e-commerce , including through the use of chat-bots, shopper personalization, image-based targeting advertising, and warehouse and inventory automation.

AI can have a big impact on the job search

If you are moving forward with the hope that a hiring manager may give you the benefit of the doubt on a small misstep within the application, you might be in for a rude awakening. AI already plays a major role in the hiring process, so much so that up to 75% of resumes are rejected by an automated applicant tracking system, or ATS, before they even reach a human being.  

In the past, recruiters have had to devote considerable time to poring over resumes to look for relevant candidates. Data from LinkedIn shows that recruiters can spend up to 23 hours looking over resumes for one successful hire. 

Increasingly, however, resume scanning is being done by AI-powered programs. In 2018, 67% of hiring managers stated that AI was making their jobs easier.

Despite the increasing prevalence of automation and algorithms in the hiring process, many have been critical of the use of certain types of AI by hiring managers, based on the charge that it can perpetuate and ever create more bias in hiring. 

One particular example is illustrated by HireVue , a startup whose initial services included technology which aimed to use facial recognition software and psychology to determine the potential effectiveness of a candidate in a certain role. The Electronic Privacy Information Center filed a lawsuit with the Federal Trade Commission alleging that this software had the potential to perpetuate bias and prejudice. HireVue discontinued use of facial recognition software in early 2021, and now uses audio analysis and natural language processing.

It’s clear that the use of certain types of AI in the hiring process will likely be controversial as new technology develops. However, if potential employers are using AI to process your application, there is no reason that you cannot be utilizing similar technology to your advantage. 

AI is also a great place to focus your energy if you are looking to upskill in your career, or make your professional profile more competitive in the job market, especially when you consider that AI will have such far-reaching impacts across many industries.

AI and machine learning are at the top of many lists of the most important skills in today's job market. Jobs requesting AI or machine-learning skills are expected to increase by 71% in the next five years. If you are tech savvy, it would be wise to dive deep and learn as much as you can about interacting in the AI space. AI is definitely here to stay, whether we like it or not. Personally, I don’t think we have anything to be afraid of. The best way to move forward is to be aware of and adapt to the new technology around us, AI included.

Fast technological development and automatization have caused many changes in people’s lives. As soon as the industrial revolution impacted the manufacturing process, productivity skyrocketed, and corporations became major societal driving factors. However, a downside of the industrial revolution was the fast improvement of equipment that worked more efficiently, cheaply, and faster than any person could. From this perspective, the jobs that were previously executed by people were quickly replaced with machines. A similar concern correlates with the current technological development, namely artificial intelligence. Artificial intelligence (AI) is a machine’s ability to learn through certain algorithms, which creates an environment in which it can become fully autonomous and used in any industry while performing any task. There are multiple uses in which AI can be applied, including medicine, physics, the economy, and other essential areas of life. However, similarly to the development of automatization during the industrial revolution, AI may correlate with increased unemployment and further issues related to this concept. This paper argues that while artificial intelligence is an effective measure to be applied for better quality and practical work, people may lose jobs as a result of its global spread.

As mentioned prior, the current state of AI may be compared with the revolutionary automatization that has made mass production and fast and effective manufacturing possible in the previous century. Certain phenomena are relatively similar, including the fear of the unknown when it comes to the process’ impact on humankind. Yet, the perspectives to shape industries and improve them overshadows risks. It is essential to point out that, at the time, machines have partially replaced human beings since manufacturers found them to be cheaper to sustain, more proficient in operating without mistakes, and faster when it comes to production. An example is an automatization in the last half of the 21st century in the US. Researchers mention that more than 50,00 people have lost their jobs in 5 years in Youngstown, Ohio, resulting in an unprecedented number of divorces and criminal activity in the city (Su 38). This exemplifies that while unemployment caused by automatization is the driving factor, the correlating societal processes caused by a lack of jobs also have a significant impact on the area in which the incident occurs.

The unemployment caused by automatization is a documented phenomenon, and while the current job market has multiple options for individuals looking for an income, lower-skilled workers find it harder to be integrated. The same circumstances may occur due to the fast development of artificial intelligence and its wide use in all areas of life. Similar to the industrial revolution and the automatization in the last century, specific jobs are becoming less marketable. Corporations would instead invest in an automatic system with better skills and no limitations that people have in terms of lower productivity, wages, and time off. Thus, the two changes in the technological reals, the first being the industrialization through machines and the second being the revolutionary AI, may be similar in terms of effects on unemployment.

AI is a threat not only because of its limitless possibilities and ability to apply to any area and industry but also because people have certain characteristics that make it impossible for them to keep up with the power of the artificial brain. Since artificial intelligence is based on self-learning, it perceives reality, examines data, and determines solutions based on the algorithms that are input into the system. The current state of the technology industry does not allow this area to be fully integrated into every area of life, but since it is improving at a fast pace, this factor cannot be omitted. On the other hand, human limits make people more unreliable and less proficient compared to machines. People are not only limited in terms of how much they can operate but also their skills and knowledge. Even the best specialist with extensive experience in a specific area would not be able to compete with AI due to the limited abilities of the brain.

Artificial intelligence is able to constantly learn based on the input data, which already gives it limitless abilities to improve without having barriers, unlike humans. As a result, autonomous AI can succeed any expert and make the job market useless. This, however, requires time since the technology is not yet on a level that would allow every corporation to replace human beings with such autonomous systems. Nonetheless, the possibility of AI improving in the next decade is almost inevitable, which is a big risk in terms of all the jobs that will then be replaced. It is essential to refer to the amount of work one can do in a certain period of time.

An example is the job of a human resource manager, a person who has to go through multiple CVs and choose the characteristics of potential employees a company needs. Thus, this position implies data analysis and determining the most potentially effective employee for a specific organization. However, an automatic system is able to go through thousands of CVs in little time and organize the information in a way that the potential workers will fit the criteria that the company requires. As a result, the position of a human resource manager would be easily replaced by an AI that can examine extensive amounts of information and, based on an algorithm, proficiently pick the choices that align with the initial requests. The same argument may be applied to multiple other jobs, including data analysis, researchers, or even journalists. Having an AI that can examine extensive information and contribute to successful task accomplishments ultimately diminishes the need for humans to do the same job yet take more time, be less efficient, and require a monthly wage for the same amount of work.

While artificial intelligence is not yet developed enough to take over the job market altogether, certain industries appear to be vulnerable to change faster than others. There are multiple examples that portray how AI may have a negative impact on employment and create an environment in which current workers will not be needed anymore. Thus, transportation is one of the industries that is seemingly going to suffer from significant changes that are arguably going to revolutionize supply chains, thus, changing the way corporations operate. For example, one of the biggest employers in the US, Walmart, is already operating with driverless trucks, which have not yet been fully integrated but have been successfully tested (Holland). This implies that drivers will no longer be needed based on the testing results, which is a positive factor for the company but a negative one for the employees. The company benefits since the products will safely and timely be delivered in stores, mitigating the risk of delays or other circumstances that usually correlate with a person executing the same job. However, while it may be cost-effective for the organization, multiple people who are currently working as drivers will no longer be needed.

There are various jobs that investments in AI development can cover. However, this cannot be implemented at the moment since the current technology is not at an adequate level yet. Still, there is a possibility that artificial intelligence can replace people who work as doctors, teachers, shop assistants, pilots, and other essential positions in the near future. An example would be an AI figuring out the correct diagnosis for a patient based on symptoms and tests. While at the moment, this cannot be possible without a person monitoring the process, advancements in the field can improve the situation.

While it is true that the development of AI is potentially risky for people of all professions, certain positions on the market are more vulnerable than others. This also correlates with the aforementioned industrialization in which laborers were replaced with much more proficient machines able to execute the same work faster and without disturbances. As exemplified, drivers are vulnerable since there are big companies already creating automatic systems that do not imply the presence of people in vehicles. Another example is customer service workers who have to either assist customers with their problems, fix an existing problem, or provide different solutions to mitigate negative customer reviews. This is a task that relies on interpersonal communication, but it does not necessarily require a human being on the other side of the line as long as an AI can deal with the difficulty.

Customer service, while practical, is expensive for companies to sustain since multiple specialists are needed if the customer base is extensive. According to researchers, experts in robotics have predicted an extensive list of professions that will not be necessary once artificial intelligence reaches its full potential (Walsh 637). This includes such professions as retail workers, cashiers, couriers, and receptionists. While executing important tasks and being the backbone of the industry where they operate, these workers are considered low-skill workers since the responsibilities do not require extensive knowledge or experience. Thus, an AI can find the rooms that a customer requests at a hotel or scan products at a supermarket. Moreover, couriers can also be replaced through automatic driving vehicles. These positions are significantly more vulnerable to being replaced through automatization compared to ones that require expert skills in a particular area, yet the job market as a whole will change once artificial intelligence is more developed.

Now that the employees who are vulnerable to replacement have been discussed, it is essential to mention that such dispersion creates inequality in the job market. The concept also applies to the previously highlighted industrial revolution. The laborers working at factories and specializing in manual work could not find a similar job because most big companies were investing in machines that would do the same tasks yet more efficiently. As a result, the workers were left with positions that they were not familiar with. The situation may repeat itself in terms of the evolution of AI.

It may be argued that automatization in all industries will create job opportunities for individuals willing to work in IT and similar areas. However, it is reasonable to consider that multiple individuals do not have the right skills, expertise, or knowledge to acquire a position that implies proficiency in technology (Ernst et al. 6). As a result, those hired as a result of automatization will be the current experts operating in the same field. On the other hand, the low-skilled workers who used to work as drivers, cashiers, or couriers will not have an accessible job market that would align with their personal expertise. In this case, multiple individuals who, based on the new job opportunities, will have the choice to join the market by working in IT will not be qualified to do so. Thus, the argument that AI creates jobs rather than replaces them is redundant due to the fact that the jobs that it creates can merely be executed by experts with high skills and experience in the area.

The arguments exemplified prior are evidence that the development of artificial intelligence and its spread among the different industries offering people jobs will facilitate unemployment. Since further automatization creates an environment in which low-skilled workers are vulnerable, the changes correlate with a reform in the job market, which may result in people losing their current positions. Moreover, the industrialization of the last century, as well as the endless possibilities of AI, are direct illustrations of the need for human assistance becoming less significant. Based on these illustrations of the possibilities for negative change facilitated by artificial intelligence, it is evident that the job market that exists today with change drastically, and certain jobs will no longer require human involvement.

Robots and AI Taking Over Jobs: What to Know About the Future of Jobs

There are two sides to this coin: Robots and AI will take some jobs away from humans — but they will also create new ones. Since 2000, robots and automation systems have slowly phased out many manufacturing jobs — 1.7 million of them. On the flip side, it’s predicted that AI will create 97 million new jobs by 2025.

Will Artificial Intelligence (AI) Replace Jobs?

Some people don’t see it both ways. For example, Sean Chou, former CEO of AI startup Catalytic , thinks robots are stupid —and he’s not alone in his frank assessment. 

“All you have to do is type in ‘YouTube robot fail,’” Chou said.

Don’t misunderstand, though; it isn’t that the machines aren’t rising. It’s that they’re rising much more slowly than some of the more breathless media coverage might have you believe — which is great news for most of those who think robots and other AI-powered technology will soon steal their jobs. “Most of” being the operative words. 

Types of Jobs AI Will Impact 

The consensus among many experts is that a number of professions will be totally automated in the next five to 10 years. A group of senior-level tech executives who comprise the Forbes Technology Council named 15: insurance underwriting, warehouse and manufacturing jobs , customer service, research and data entry, long haul trucking and a somewhat disconcertingly broad category titled “Any Tasks That Can Be Learned.”

How Many Jobs Will AI Replace?

Kai-Fu Lee, AI expert and CEO of Sinovation Ventures , wrote in a 2018 essay that 50 percent of all jobs will be automated by AI within 15 years.

“Accountants, factory workers, truckers, paralegals, and radiologists — just to name a few — will be confronted by a disruption akin to that faced by farmers during the Industrial Revolution,” Lee wrote.

When considering those developments and predictions, and based on multiple studies — by the McKinsey Global Institute , Oxford University and the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics , among others — there is massive and unavoidable change afoot. Research suggests that both specially trained workers and blue-collar workers will be impacted by the continued implementation of AI.

Developments in generative AI tools like ChatGPT and Bard have raised questions about if AI will replace jobs that involve writing. While it’s unlikely that AI will ever match the authentic creativity of humans, it is already being used as a catalyst for writing ideas and assisting with repetitive content creation. 

For example, tasks like writing formulaic emails, creating social media posts and responding to customer service requests can already be offloaded onto AI writing tools or chatbots. In some cases, AI is used to create a first draft that is edited by a human.

When it comes to AI art and design, the technology has already produced work worth hundreds of thousands of dollars . And AI art generators like Midjourney and Dall-E are gaining traction. So what does this mean for artists and designers? Some view AI-generated art as a tool , while others view it as a threat . While many believe AI will never achieve the celebrity level of some human artists, graphic design and commercial art fields may be impacted as these tools become more refined and capable of following specific design prompts. 

Although AI is sure to change the future of work , there are many theories on the nature of that change. And many of them, you might be pleased to learn, are neither gloomy nor doomy.

Industries That Will Always Need Humans

We can take comfort in the fact that some jobs will never be replaced by AI. The jobs that AI won’t be able to replicate range from creative fields to empathic jobs as well as complex political and strategic jobs.

Some industries that will continue to rely on human workers include writing jobs , social work, criminal defense law, teaching and AI training engineers. 

These fields may still be aided by the advancement of AI in the future, but AI and robots can’t replicate the empathy and social intelligence that these fields require. For example, AI could be a helpful tool for educators when trying to gain an understanding of students’ varying levels of competence, progress and temperament — but teachers will still be masters of diving into students’ special interests and providing mentorship. And although jobs that involve writing can benefit from AI content generators, these tools still have shortcomings around accuracy and misinformation , so they are likely far from replacing human writers.

There will also be a demand for human workers to help adapt us to a new world with a larger AI presence. Chou noted that in order to facilitate technology adoption so it reduces workloads rather than increases them, you need people — and lots of them.

“The more technology encompasses and the more we demand of technology, the more people are involved in doing that,” he said. 

Chou cites video games as a good example. Back in the “DOS days,” he said, all it took was one hyper-dedicated “rogue” and six or so months of toil to create a game that could be disseminated as shareware. Now it takes a high-tech village to produce what Chou characterizes as a “movie studio-like undertaking” requiring voice talent, designer, sophisticated physics and a multi-million-dollar budget. 

“I feel like there’s this overwhelming sense that as we get more value from computers and AI, people become less important,” said Dan Platt, a senior principal of market innovation at AI company Narrative Science . “But I don’t see it that way. For the foreseeable and unforeseeable future, you will need contractors and plumbers and electricians and window installers — all these jobs that are immensely important and that the world does not operate without.” 

Workers in fields that require a human touch will continue to be in demand. Although AI is poised to aid many industries, human-to-human connection in the workplace will always be necessary.

The Benefits of AI in the Workplace

Among AI’s biggest boons, many experts believe, is its ability to save humans from having to perform tedious repetitive tasks that are part of their overall duties so they’re free to focus on more complex and rewarding projects — or just take some much-needed time off. 

“There’s always a concern that technology is displacing this current body of workers or tasks, and that’s true,” Chou said. “But what always happens is that work, and that output, gets redirected to things that are much more productive.”

Some think increased productivity and efficiency might even shorten the work week . Which seems good in theory but comes with its own set of issues. Namely: how will pay and benefits be affected? And who reaps the bulk of monetary rewards? Those remain unanswered questions.

“Up to this point, technology has created more work because it’s another thing you have to deal with,” said Justin Adams, former CEO at Digitize.AI and vice president at its parent company Waystar . “But I think there’s an inflection point where certain AI will get to a place where that actually flips.”

How AI Will Create Jobs 

Even now, armies of people around the world are involved in the development of AI. Per a New York Times story on the subject, “A.I. researchers hope they can build systems that can learn from smaller amounts of data. But for the foreseeable future, human labor is essential.”

Chou is in agreement with the necessity for human workers. “The number of people that are necessary to deliver better and better technology grows massively,” Chou said. “So you move from worrying about the impact of high technology to actually helping to create the technology. When you look at AI, there’s this nonstop need for training, for data, for maintenance, for taking care of all the exceptions that are happening. How do we monitor AI? How do we train it? How do we make sure that AI’s not running amok? Those are all going to become new jobs.”

Gigaom CEO Byron Reese has a similar, if more hyperbolic, take on how AI will affect human labor. As he opined in an essay , AI will be “the greatest job engine the world has ever seen.”

“In fact,” Reese said, “the BLS [Bureau of Labor Statistics] forecasts faster-than-average job growth in many occupations that AI is expected to impact: accountants, forensic scientists, geological technicians, technical writers, MRI operators, dietitians, financial specialists, web developers, loan officers, medical secretaries, and customer service representatives, to name a very few. These fields will not experience job growth in spite of AI, but through it.”

“But just as with the internet,” he added, “the real gains in jobs will come from places where our imaginations cannot yet take us."

Chris Nicholson, CEO of the San Francisco-based machine learning company Skymind.AI , shares a similar view rooted in even more distant history.

“Everybody uses this analogy, but when the Industrial Revolution came, a certain kind of job disappeared,” Nicholson said. “But many jobs, and many [new] jobs, were created. So when you think about, say, England before and after the Industrial Revolution, it wasn’t a poorer place where there was less work. There was a lot more work, but it was a different kind of work.”

As part of a Ted Talk he gave in 2017, futurist Martin Ford addressed the issue by harkening to the so-called “ Triple Revolution report ” that was assembled by a group of brainiacs and presented to President Lyndon Johnson in early 1964. The report argued, in Ford’s telling, “that the U.S. was on the brink of economic and social upheaval because industrial automation was going to put millions of people out of work.”

That was more than a half century ago, he noted, “and of course that hasn’t really happened. And that’s been the story again and again. This alarm has been raised repeatedly, but it’s always a false alarm. And because it’s been a false alarm, it’s led to a very conventional way of thinking about this” — thinking which holds that technology “may devastate entire industries” and “wipe out whole occupations and types of work.” Nonetheless, he continued, “progress is going to lead to entirely new things” — new industries with new job opportunities “that today we can’t really even imagine.”

It remains to be seen whether the forthcoming crop of AI-spawned jobs necessitated by the introduction of as-yet-undetermined products and services will provoke similar ire. But one thing’s for sure: when it comes to work, humans will be just as necessary as they’ve always been, only in different ways. In many of the same ways, too.

How to Prepare for AI in the Workplace

Amazon — whose warehouses buzz with robots and will be increasingly automated in years to come — announced that it would retrain a third of its 300,000-strong U.S. workforce to the tune of $700 million. Participation is voluntary in a program the company calls “ Upskilling 2025 ,” which is designed to teach employees skills they can apply to work in technical roles inside or outside of Amazon.

Skills to Cultivate in the Age of AI

More cynical observers might chalk that up to an expensive public relations campaign in light of less-than-flattering reports about how the company allegedly treats its workers. Besides that, Chou said, it’s infeasible. Why not simply make technology that’s more adaptable to more people, he wonders, so the learning curve is much lower? Retraining warehouse workers to be, say, engineers is completely unrealistic. Which isn’t to say there’s no value in additional education.

“I think that we should be trying to get people to understand a little bit about a lot of things so the jump is not very large and the opportunities come,” Platt said. “You're not going to train everybody to write in Python , but if you have people that are trained to understand the basics of engineering, or how things work, their chances [of not being displaced] are a lot higher.”

For Nicholson, surviving and thriving in an increasingly AI-powered world requires a multi-pronged approach. First and foremost, he advises, “Avoid bullshit jobs. If you’re bored in your job, it’s probably a bullshit job and the machines will probably eat it.”

Beyond that, his practical recommendations are surprisingly tech-less. And they can be summed up in two words: basic skills. For example, having solid verbal and written communication like listening, reading emotions, asking questions, writing clearly and structuring cogent arguments devoid of ambiguity.

“That's all very important,” he said, “and it's also very hard for machines to do. Barring a nuclear holocaust, there will be no lack of humans who need to be communicated with.”

Some math skills are crucial, too. Chiefly, deep knowledge of the so-called Riemann Hypothesis, a conjecture that the Riemann zeta function has its zeros only at the negative even integers and complex numbers with real part 1/2. Just kidding (thanks, Wikipedia).

But it’s a good idea, Nicholson says, to cultivate a decent understanding of statistical concepts, calculus and algebraic linear regression in order to comprehend the “ output of AI algorithms .” Arming oneself with that sort of foundational knowledge is key to “being able to adapt.” And in these tech-driven times, adaptation has no patience for slow pokes.

“People like to compare AI to electricity,” Chou said. “And I actually agree with that analogy. But electricity took one or two generations to go from idea to widespread adoption, whereas today we’re seeing the impact of technology occur much faster. And so the rate of fundamental social change is increasing, and it’s taking a toll faster than people are ready and able to adapt.”

But in order to survive and thrive, they must. And so, while big change is coming, a little advance planning — by workers who stand to be replaced and the companies that employ them — goes a long way.

In short, stop fretting and start acting.

“There’s no doubt that the AI revolution will require re-adjustments and a great deal of sacrifice,” Lee said. “But despairing rather than preparing for what’s to come is unproductive and, perhaps, even reckless. We must remember that our human knack for compassion and empathy is going to be a valuable asset in the future workforce, and that jobs hinged on care, creativity and education will remain vital to our society.”
