34 Exciting Creative Writing Topics for Grade 5
There’s no doubt about it—journaling is one of the most effective ways to inspire creativity and encourage an interest in writing in young students. For a student who is full of imagination and eager to express his or her inner thoughts, journaling can be an exciting alternative to more traditional school assignments like book reports and themes.
Best of all, because journaling offers so much more flexibility and freedom of expression, students are less likely to perceive the activity as “work” and more likely to feel like they’re having fun at school!
These 34 new creative writing topics for grade 5 students are designed especially to inspire new thoughts and ideas in your students. As they dream about fun topics like how they would get along with their favorite book characters and what sports they would add to the Olympics, students will feel inspired to get more detailed and descriptive in their writing—and as they make up their own origin stories about the Earth and reflect on the most interesting people they know, students will have the opportunity to fully express their own unique ways of looking at the world.
Have fun with these exciting new creative writing topics for your grade 5 writers and see what kind of inspired new ideas they can come up with!

Writing Help & Tips
Use the tips below to improve the writing process for your young writer and help to keep them engaged.
1. Writing Is Important
Show your fifth grader why writing is important. You can do so by modeling the importance of writing. For example, when you write stuff down do so in front of your child.
You can make this more powerful by explaining why writing is an important life skill to master. Explain the value writing offers in the situation. Do what you can to help your child see the value of writing.
2. Proper Writing Tools
Be sure your child has the proper writing tools. This means the correct writing paper for your child’s age. The paper could have a special design, lines, no lines, or a fun pattern on it that your child loves.
Children also enjoy writing with their very own “special” pens, pencils, or markers. You could make getting your child’s writing tools a big deal. Let your fifth grader know their writing tools are prized possesions. After all, they support them in learning a vital life skill.
3. Easy Access to Writing Tools
Leave plenty of journaling and writing supplies available for your child to use whenever they are feeling creative. Encourage your kids to draw and write as much as they want to.
4. Encourage Writing
Encourage your child to write, write, write. Write when they are happy, when they are sad, and when they are not sure how they feel. Ask them to write funny stories or record a daily journal entry.
To further encourage a child’s writing skill development, do not correct your child on the mistakes that he or she makes. Doing so could end up making them feel bad about writing. Remember, this is writing practice, not a test.
If you decide to go ahead and correct mistakes, you must be gentle. This will help your child feel a little better about your feedback and not take it to heart.
5. Make Learning Writing Fun!
Learning to write doesn’t have to be a hassle or boring for children, rather you can make it fun. When learning any new skill, it has to interest and engage a child.
Consider playing games together that involves writing. For example, you could play hangman or Scrabble. You could even create a word search that has your child’s name in it. Here is a list of 8 writing games for students with links to even more free printables.
Don’t forget to encourage your grade 5 child to write some fun stories that will make you both laugh and be sure to encourage them to draw or paint plenty of pictures if they are the more artistic type (or even if they aren’t!).
6. Reward Your Child’s Writing Efforts
When you are offering writing help for fifth graders, it is important that you reward your child when they do a great job. It could be with their favorite food, extra time to play their favorite video game, or spending quality time together. The reward could even be a new pack of markers and paints.
Remember, when teaching writing, you and your child can have a great time. You’re learning and laughing together. Plus, you’re making fun memories that will last a lifetime
If you enjoyed these Writing Printables for 5th Grade Students , please share them on Facebook, Twitter, and/or Pinterest. I appreciate it!
Until next time, keep on practicing those writing skills with your fifth graders…

5th Grade Grammar: Key Skills and Worksheets

Fifth grade grammar is when kids start dealing with writing more intelligibly and learn some skills that will help them perfect their writing. Learn all the skills covered in 5th grade grammar lessons.
5th Grade Parts of Speech and Grammar Usage
The Common Core Standards for 5th grade set forth the important literacy and language skills needed for a student to pass from 5th grade into 6th grade. The first skills examined are different parts of speech like conjunctions, prepositions and interjections.
What Is a Conjunction?
In 5th grade, students start by learning about what a conjunction is . They then dive into the different types of conjunctions.
- coordinating conjunctions - FANBOYS used to join phrases or clauses
- subordinating conjunctions - word connecting two independent clauses
- correlative conjunctions - two conjunctions working together in a sentence

Basics sentence combining
Perfecting prepositions.
In addition to the function of conjunctions, students examine the use of prepositions in a sentence. They look at how prepositions function and common prepositions through preposition worksheets or a list of prepositions .
Learning Interjections
Another fun feature of 5th grade grammar is learning about the fun of interjections . Students begin to see how interjections like yikes and wow function in a sentence to convey emotion.
Grasping Shifts in Verb Tense
In this grade, children need to grasp different shifts in sentences and sentence structure. Therefore, 5th graders must:
- understand how to use and covey verb tense in various situations
- learn to find inappropriate shifts in verb tense
- explore perfect verb tense like “She had written”

Past simple vs past continuous worksheet
Conventions of writing for 5th grade.
Fifth grade grammar is where students will find out how to construct narratives with paragraphs. It’s time for them to shape those blocks into chunks of information for others to decipher. This requires understanding writing conventions like figurative language, idioms and word relationships.
Exploring Figurative Language: Simile and Metaphor
At this grade level, your kids have an idea of what figurative language is but they haven’t had much chance to use it. However, they start to dive more into figurative language techniques like:
- simile - comparison with like or as
- metaphor - comparison without like or as
Literary term worksheets are introduced to get students used to these types of literary devices as they see them more in literature.
Introducing Idioms, Adages & Proverbs
In the younger elementary grades, the curriculum is focused on improving reading and understanding, but as students grow, the nuances of the English language become more important. Therefore, 5th graders use examples to understand:
- idioms - phrases with figurative rather than literal meanings
- adages - sayings that become truth
- proverbs - sayings that give advice
Mastering Word Relationships
Since 5th graders are perfecting their writing skills, it’s important for them to revisit the relationships between words like:
- homonyms - words that sound or look like other words don't share a meaning
- synonyms - words that share meanings or slightly different meanings with other totally different words
- antonyms - words with opposite meanings
Understanding Transition Words
As they build their writing skills, transition words and their importance come to the forefront. Students gain an understanding of transition words and how they are accurately used in writing to add clarity and flow to their writing.

Worksheet transition words
5th grade punctuation & spelling.
Rolling on the heels of learning word relationships and nuances in the English language, 5th grade students must also have a firm mastery of comma usage, spelling and roots.
Using Commas for Introductory Elements
The Common Core elements for 5th grade focus specifically on using a comma to separate out introductory elements and to set off tags. For example:
- No, thank you.
- It’s true, right?
Practicing 5th Grade Spelling Words
Fifth-graders gain a complex and complicated spelling vocabulary that goes beyond just the Dolch sight words . However, these are still incorporated.

Spelling bee quiz grades 3 5
Learning prefixes, suffixes & roots.
Additionally, students learn more about Greek prefixes, suffixes and root words to help dissect the meaning of words. Though students are just dipping their toes into this skill in 5th grade, it builds into the middle school grammar skills.

Prefix worksheet
Additional 5th grade grammar skills.
Fifth graders start to dive into the English language in not only their grammar but how English grammar can differ. They start to look at how sentence structure and grammar conventions can vary for specific types of writing like poetry, dramas and stories.
Consulting Reference Material
Consulting reference materials like dictionaries and glossaries becomes increasingly important to clarify meanings and pronunciation of words. Students start to look more definitions up in glossaries.
Mastering Context Clues
Cause and effect relationships and examples are examined to help break down the meanings of phrases or words. Students place more emphasis on the context surrounding a word or story to help them find meaning.
Important Fifth Grade Skills
As students enter the 5th grade, they start learning about their world through texts that have been left by great men and women of history. Learning becomes more objective in that it is no longer based on unique experience of the world, but on the digestion of other's experiences through words. Writing is the one human act that has no equivalence in the animal kingdom, and human beings learn from each other irrespective of time and space through that act. Once your kids are ready, you can move on to 6th grade grammar .
