BTS and the Band’s Celebrity Role Essay

The issue of becoming a celebrity in the modern, highly competitive world of show-business depends on a variety of factors. The ability of an artist to meet the requirements of time, the expectations of fans, as well as the effective management, might lead to the top of worldwide popularity. One such celebrity artist is a Korean boy-band Beyond the Scene (BTS), which managed to occupy the global music arena within several years.

The popularity of the group emerged as a part of a so-called Korean wave in pop music. The band claimed its global fame and recognition by releasing their 2015 album “Hwayang-Yeonhwa PT. 2” that occupied “top album chart and top song chart” (Choi et al. 2). This album and the consecutive releases have gained the band millions of fans around the world. According to their YouTube channel, the number of BTS’s followers equals to 23.4 million people with more than three and a half billion views in total (BANGTANTV). As per 2019, the monetary worth of the band is approximately $60 million (Gomez par. 16).

Apart from great album releases and concert schedule with venues in different parts of the world, the group is actively involved in producing such merchandise items as comics, books, or clothes under the BTS label represented in an online shop.

The Big Hit Entertainment Company that guides the band in the world of business facilitates the releases of films, and mobile simulation games, and books. The book, under the title “The Most Beautiful Moment in Life: The Notes,” and the documentary films “Love Yourself in Seoul” and “Burn the Stage: The Movie” tell the stories about the band’s experience in the music industry. There is also a so-called BTS Universe, an alternative universe of the group, which is a unique element of fans’ activity (Jin-ha par. 14-17). Thus, the band plays a significant celebrity role in the contemporary world of the music industry, which is justified by its monetary worth, a number of fans, and an array of secondary material releases.

How Kim Namjoon, RM of BTS, inspired me to be a better leader

It is no secret that kim namjoon and bts, overall, have been a big inspiration in my life for the last 2 years, but it is important to express how namjoon played a role in inspiring me as a young leader..

Positive role models, motivational, impactful leaders and individuals are crucial in our society today. We are living in uncertain times where young leaders have to rise up and tackle important issues. As someone who has been in leadership roles, I often look to fellow leaders for guidance, advice, insight and inspiration.

I am so grateful for being introduced to BTS’s music, as I was able to learn from them, understand and agree with their imperative philosophies and life lessons, whilst also being an ARMY who loves and supports them wholeheartedly. At the same time, I took the opportunity to learn from Kim Namjoon (RM) because he is a humble, inspiring, generous, golden hearted man who is also the leader of BTS, and notably, a leader of a movement for self awareness and self love.

It’s okay to make mistakes

A beautiful lesson that all leaders can learn from Namjoon is that is okay to make mistakes, and take responsibility for them. In a world full of corruption, problematic behaviours and decisions, we unfortunately have situations where leaders are not willing to be held accountable. Instead, they take criticisms as “personal attacks,” and in some instances, would rather play the victim card than account for what they have said or done.

Unlike the “status quo” of many leaders, Namjoon opposes the thought of disregarding critiques and comments when it comes to possible problematic behaviour expressed, especially things from the past. He acknowledges past mistakes, and is open and honest about learning and unlearning. In fact, he has gone on to educate himself, and to ensure that he does not repeat past mistakes. He teaches us the importance of growth of a person: you are not perfect; you may make mistakes, but it is your responsibility to be willing to change in order to become a better person.

Be Open to New Ideas and Knowledge

One thing that many ARMYs have loved about BTS’s music is that the majority of it is based off of intellectual ideas, theories and academic pieces or critical, fictional pieces. Ranging from psychology theorists such as Carl Jung to writers such as Murakami, BTS has directly and indirectly encouraged ARMYs to read more and embrace new ideas, views and concepts that we may have not considered before.

This goes hand-in-hand with Namjoon’s open willingness to learn and grow. Being exposed to new sources and pools of knowledge, whether they are in the form of experiences or in written form, so that we are able to provide more insight and constructed ideas to the team.

Giving Others a Voice

Despite being the leader of the group, Namjoon ensures that members’ voices are heard and respected. It is comforting and encouraging to watch interviews, concerts and discussions, and notice that members of BTS will be given the chance to speak and express themselves. This is important because it teaches us all that each member of any team should have a voice, a voice that will allow themselves to be empowered and heard.

In leadership, this is important for groups, teams and movements you lead. Do not be the single voice. Allow people to speak out, to express themselves and be themselves. By encouraging and dialogue and inclusivity, you will be able to achieve a more unified approach to tackling issues, challenges, or working towards goals! When it is time for others to shine and step forward, allow them to do so.

Dedication and Perseverance

An important lesson to learn from Namjoon is not to give up on yourself, your team and the goals that you have. You have dreams and aspirations that are worth pursuing, and there may be major barriers in the way, but it is definitely possible to work towards achieving them.

For Namjoon’s, he had a passion and a dream to become a famous rap artist and producer. Obviously that has been successfully achieved now, but it was not an easy road to get where he is today. What we can learn from him and all members of BTS is that there will be “road blocks” and “rivers in the way” but it is possible to build bridges to surpass anything that tries to prevent you from succeeding.

Love Yourself and Speak Yourself

“Tell me your story. I want to hear your voice, and I want to hear your conviction. No matter who you are, where you’re from, your skin colour, gender identity: speak yourself. Find your name, find your voice by speaking yourself,” Kim Namjoon.

Perhaps the best message that is needed in society today is the beautiful, empowering, uplifting message of BTS. “Love Yourself” has been an era of BTS which has now become an intrinsic part of who they are and what they represent. Namjoon, being a leader and spokesperson, has eloquently expressed the meaning and process behind “Love Yourself”. It starts with a person understanding and becoming aware of who they are, followed by being able to face themselves and their fears. After this, they’re able to reach a point where they can love themselves and openly express who they are, what they identify as, and be unapologetic about it.

BTS has made their message clear about the Love Yourself Process. In order to truly love others, you need to be able to love yourself. Unfortunately, this has been difficult for many, but it is crucial to achieve. It is also vital for a leader to take part in this process, because it will allow them to become leaders of integrity, who are genuine, who stand by their beliefs, and will not lie and be consumed by superficiality.

It is these, and many more lessons, that BTS and Namjoon have taught me, and have allowed me to become a better leader. BTS is leading a movement of change, a revolution of self-love, and the revival of vibrant, honest and giving leaders who selflessly care about the people they represent and work with.

Korean boy band BTS, also known as the Bangtan Boys, are well-known for their dominance over the global music industry. But did you know they’re also active philanthropists?

Made up of seven members — Jin, Suga, J-Hope, RM, Jimin, V, and Jungkook — BTS took to the world stage in 2013 with their first album 2 Cool 4 Skool . They quickly became one of the most popular names in K-pop, shattering records in South Korea and abroad to garner fans from all over the world.

Despite their global success, the Korean pop boy band never let stardom go to their heads.

In 2018, BTS became the first South Korean act to top the US Billboard 200 chart, which ranks the 200 most popular music albums in the United States. In the same year, they partnered with the UN for Generation Unlimited , a global initiative to invest in education and skills training for young people to prepare them for the workforce.

From donating to charity to championing social causes, each member of BTS has taken it upon themselves to make the world a better place. And they’ve inspired their fans to take action, too.

In September, BTS is joining a lineup of amazing international artists for Global Citizen Live , a 24 hour global broadcast to defend the planet and defeat poverty. As part of this advocacy event, Global Citizens everywhere can take action on the world’s biggest issues ahead of three international conferences this year: the UN General Assembly, the G20 meeting, and the COP26 climate conference.

We’ll be announcing more details soon about BTS’ performance as part of Global Citizen Live . In the meantime, need a little inspiration from one of the most iconic pop acts of the 21st century? We’ve rounded up seven ways that BTS inspires others to create lasting change in the global fight to defend the planet and defeat poverty.

1. BTS partnered with UNICEF to end violence against children.

Since November 2017, BTS has partnered with the Korean and Japanese Committees for UNICEF to launch Love Myself, an effort to combine the group’s promotion of self love and mental health with UNICEF’s campaign to #ENDViolence against children.

Your comment of encouragement counts💜 Join us in spreading the LOVE MYSELF message! All the proceeds from LOVE MYSELF LINE stickers will go to the #BTS LOVE MYSELF fund 👉Global: https://t.co/bk3gXZT5aQ 👉Japan: https://t.co/SIlOTQ3Q0A #BTSLoveMyself #ENDviolence #LoveMyself pic.twitter.com/x1TLvMV3cb — LOVE MYSELF (@bts_love_myself) August 11, 2021

Love Myself highlights a signature message found in BTS’ many songs and albums: before you can love anyone else, you have to first take care of yourself. The group encourages fans to post images of themselves promoting self-love on social media with the hashtag #BTSLoveMyself, as well as donates proceeds from the campaign to UNICEF to support victims of school violence, domestic violence, and sexual assault.

It’s just that loving myself, Doesn’t require anyone else’s permission, I’m looking for myself again.

"Answer: Love Myself"

In 2021, BTS renewed the Love Myself campaign to continue supporting violence prevention programs and help children and teenagers affected by violence around the world.

2. They also support everyone’s right to learn.

Singer Jimin grew up in Busan and attended the Busan High School of Arts to study dance. Since 2016, the South Korean superstar has made several donations to support education in his home community, donating money and resources to help students in need of financial assistance.

But he’s not the only member of BTS who supports children’s right to pursue education.

In 2019, J-Hope donated almost 100 million won (approximately $85,000) to provide scholarships for low-income students at Jeonnam Girls’ Commercial High School in South Korea, according to Soompi.

3. BTS has continuously stood up against racism.

In the wake of worldwide protests against racial injustice in June 2020, BTS took action. In addition to speaking up about the harms of racism, the group made a donation of $1 million to Black Lives Matter to support racial justice initiatives.

"When we're abroad or in other situations, we've also been subjected to prejudice. We feel that prejudice should not be tolerated; it really has no place," singer Jin told Variety about the donation.

Within 25 hours of their donation, BTS fans — known collectively as ARMY — joined together to match the group’s donation, giving another $1 million to the Black Lives Matter organization.

#StopAsianHate #StopAAPIHate pic.twitter.com/mOmttkOpOt — 방탄소년단 (@BTS_twt) March 30, 2021

And earlier this year, BTS made a public announcement regarding anti-Asian hate, arising from the COVID-19 pandemic and xenophobic remarks and actions targeting Asian communities around the world. In a statement posted on Twitter, the group shared how racism has personally affected their lives and called for an end to ignorance and hate against people everywhere.

4. They help the most vulnerable access lifesaving health care.

The Bangtan Boys are huge proponents of helping people everywhere have access to health care, especially those who struggle to afford the treatments they need.

In honor of his 28th birthday, Suga donated the equivalent of $88,000 to Keimyung University Dongsan Medical Center, which went towards paying the hospital bills of children in need of financial assistance, according to Billboard.

"I wanted to help the children, who cannot receive proper treatment because of financial hardship, and see them become healthy and bright," Suga said in a statement.

He’s not the only BTS member to inspire others to give. Last year, J-Hope donated 100 million won to help children whose families faced financial hardship because of the COVID-19 pandemic. A member of ChildFund Korea’s Green Noble Club because of his frequent and generous donations to support the welfare of children, J-Hope made sure that people did not have to sacrifice the necessities when taking care of their families.

The giving nature of the boys inspired their fans to take action relating to health, too.

Since 2013, supporters of BTS from around the world have worked together to donate money and resources to support accessible health care initiatives. Some of these initiatives include donating funds to help children in Peru and Canada receive costly surgeries and comprehensive care, as well to organizations that assist kids with disabilities in Busan.

5. They don’t believe any child should be hungry.

With a global fanbase and successful marketing campaigns, BTS has been able to donate money to causes that are in desperate need of resources to save people’s lives. To this end, the group has taken it upon themselves to support several initiatives that are helping prevent children from going hungry.

In 2014, BTS teamed up with Love Food Bank to deliver food to children experiencing food insecurity in Korea. That act of love has sent ripple effects through the world, inspiring their fans to create lasting change and ease hunger for people everywhere.

💜BTS 6TH ANNIVERSARY DONATION PROJECT💜 #BorahaeBundles @BTS_twt ———————— Hello everyone! We have come to the end of the FoodBank project in honour of BTS’s 6th Anniv. Special thanks to those who gave us support and contributed in making the project a success! Thanks all 💜💜 pic.twitter.com/gd5FDgSBJt — Borahae Team ⁷ (@btsborahaeteam) June 8, 2019

In Singapore, BTS fans organized a food drive with Food Bank Singapore in honor of the band’s sixth anniversary in 2019. The group’s global fanbase ARMY also sent 128 sacks of rice to singer J-Hope’s hometown of Gwangju, as well as more than 1,540 pounds of feed to animal rights organizations.

When the group launched a collaboration with McDonald’s to produce a special BTS-themed meal in nearly 50 countries, fans used the opportunity to coordinate a special giving campaign, ShareARMeal. Following the timeline of the BTS x McDonald’s collaboration, ShareARMeal organized donations and food drives in regions around the world to ease food insecurity.

6. BTS also cares about the environment and climate change’s impact on human lives.

BTS signed on to defend the planet and defeat poverty when deciding to perform at Global Citizen Live this September, but they have long been proponents of saving the environment.

Global Superstar @BTS_twt are teaming up with Formula E as global ambassadors to shine a light on important social issues and raise awareness of climate change ⚡ pic.twitter.com/R2T6767lg4 — ABB FIA Formula E World Championship (@FIAFormulaE) December 19, 2019

In 2019, the boys became global ambassadors of the ABB FIA Formula E Championship, the street racing series that uses electric cars to raise awareness about air pollution and the future of clean energy.

That care has encouraged fans to commit to individual action to help the environment. From partnering with organizations that provide relief from wildfires to planting more than 8,000 trees in the Amazon rainforest, BTS has inspired people around the world to take action against climate change.

7. They want to help people affected by crises around the world.

While all of the boys take part in philanthropic efforts, J-Hope continuously steps up to provide funding and resources to the organizations that need the most help. So it’s no surprise that earlier this year, the K-pop star donated over $89,000 to the One Stop Center in Tanzania, which assists children who were victims of violence.

"Many people around the world are suffering from COVID-19," J-Hope said in a statement , according to Soompi. "I came to support children overseas following the support of domestic children in hopes that the warmth of sharing could reach them in the nooks of the world."

Throughout the pandemic, BTS has raised awareness about the importance of protecting ourselves and others from COVID-19 in Korea and abroad. J-Hope’s understanding that global issues must be addressed in addition to domestic concerns has long inspired BTS’ fan base to help people in crisis around the world.

One of the ways the fanbase has honored the group’s giving spirit is by donating to organizations assisting with the fallout of last year’s explosion in Beirut, which killed over 200 people and caused long lasting repercussions for the city.

The dedication of the BTS members and their fans has been part of a global movement of individuals taking action on today’s most pressing issues, highlighting the change that can come about when just one person decides to stand up for what’s right.

And this September, Global Citizens everywhere can have the chance to join BTS’ mission by tuning into Global Citizen Live on Sept. 25! Find out more about Global Citizen Live  and how you can join BTS to move the world — one action at a time —  here .

You can join the Global Citizen Live campaign to defeat poverty and defend the planet by  taking action here , and become part of a movement powered by citizens around the world who are taking action together with governments, corporations, and philanthropists to make change.

Bts leader rm and his top 7 motivating and inspiring quotes, the k-pop idol group's rapper rm is not just a huge talent on stage—he offers pretty amazing inspiration to the young and old alike with his motivational quotes. read them here, mind and spirituality, demai granali.

In the midst of the pandemic, Korean supergroup BTS has become a source of light and hope for many people. Not only through their music, which sing messages of self-love and positivity, but fans all over the world have also found solace and inspiration from their amazing success story and genuine friendship.

Their seven-year journey from rookie idols to global superstars have been well-documented in films, livestreams, and fan clips, which have now become a treasure trove of quotable quotes from each member. The group’s leader, RM, known for his articulate expressions of his thoughts through song lyrics and in his conversations with fans, has some of the most inspiring words that can resonate with anyone experiencing a slump or going through a rough time.

BTS in Dear Class of 2020/YouTube Originals

Bts slayed the vmas 2020 stage in their slick, retro-inspired looks.

Here are seven of the most inspiring and motivating quotes from RM, a.k.a. Kim Namjoon, who celebrates his birthday today (September 12):

1. “I think that there’s no need to live your life based on the standards of others. Everyone says ‘dream big,’ but I don’t think you have to live so fiercely like that all the time.”

Speaking to fans via social networking platform VLive on August 27, 2016, RM casually shared his thoughts about the pressure to become successful or accomplished.

Especially in the age of social media, where everyone is seemingly judged according to looks, lifestyle, clout and other superficial concepts, RM’s message feels like a comforting hug to anyone who may feel they are lacking or inadequate compared to their peers.

He adds, “Some people live fiercely although they don’t seem to. So if you hear, ‘You shold be more diligent. You don’t seem to have a dream,’ don’t be discouraged. That’s not the truth. The person who tells you that might not know what he wants to do or what he is up to. Just trust yourself and live a healthy and happy life like me. So find what makes you happy and work hard in your school or work.”

2. “This nightmare will repeat. Everyone will be sad, will be sick, from time to time. You will fall down sometimes. But we want to shout out, ‘I’m fine.’”

On a VLive broadcast on September 2, 2018, RM was making a commentary on their album 'Love Yourself: Answer', which was released a week prior. Discussing the song “I’m Fine,” he explains the meaning behind the “repeating nightmare” mentioned in the bridge part:

Can you see it too? The dim moonlight?  Can you hear it too? That faint echo? I yell it out myself, casting a spell on this repeating nightmare, I’m feeling just fine, fine, fine

According to RM, the song teaches us to accept and face the reality that life will throw us many curveballs. However, no matter how tough and how often these things happen to us, we should never think of them as reasons to lose hope and give up. Instead, we should look forward to overcoming these obstacles and know that in the end, things will be alright.

3. “Happiness is not something that you have to achieve. You can still feel happy during the process of achieving something.”

At the 2015 HYYH On Stage concert in Seoul, RM explained the meaning behind the concept of their album Hwa Yang Yeon Hwa ('The Most Beautiful Moment In Life' in Chinese). Here, he emphasized that a beautiful moment in life does not only pertain to times when we feel happy or satisfied, but also when we are faced with difficulties as these are part of our growth and learning process as humans.

He adds, ”So if you change the perspective a little bit... I know many people are going through tough times right now, but this moment can be the most beautiful moment of our lives. Something can be beautiful because there’s something horrible. So there are tough times, life can be tough or it can be good, so just hang in there. If you can accept that those hard times are part of the beautiful moments in life, I think you can truly understand our Hwa Yang Yeon Hwa.”

This quote is a perfect reminder for anyone who feels lost, uninspired, or dejected that life is not just about the destination but also the journey. Take time to appreciate the small things and use the inspiration from those to keep you focused on the big goal.

4. “Go live your life. You really don’t know when and where your life might have a turning point so make sure to live (to see through them) and let’s live life to the fullest.”

In a VLive broadcast in November 2016, RM talked about how he never planned on becoming a K-Pop idol who dances on stage and holds fan meetings (he really just wanted to be a rapper).  His words remind us that even though things don’t always go as planned, we should keep moving forward and enjoy the ride. After all, life can be full of surprises, so when opportunity strikes, have courage to take and grab it.

5. “Doing my best in the things that are in front of me is the best way that I can answer the question of my existence.”

In the Break The Silence docu-series released last May, RM touched on the burdens of becoming a globally recognized artist. As expectations for BTS to exceed their current success grows, he reminds himself and his members to stay grounded and not cave in to the pressure.

This quote is a great pick-me-upper for anyone who feels overwhelmed by heavy workloads and responsibilities. He also said, “Focusing on the present and doing my best to live for tomorrow are the only things I can do now.”

What Keeps Me Calm: My Daily Routine with BTS

6. “There are many sad days. But rather than sad days, we hope to have better days. That’s what makes us live. That’s what makes us dream. That’s what drives us to desire for something.”

On VLive discussing the songwriting process behind “2! 3!,” a track from their 2016 album Wings, RM tackles the universal human experience of going through good days and bad days.  Here, he basically reminds us that nothing is really over until it’s over, so no matter how long it may take, you should never lose hope that better days will come.

7. “I hope you know your limits well, but don’t stay within those limits. Overcome the limits each day."

RM has always been big on self-reflection. Despite his numerous accomplishments as an individual artist and as leader of BTS, he has always maintained his “rookie mentality” and hunger for learning.

Through this line from Break The Silence, he reminds us that there is no set deadline when it comes developing oneself. He encourages us to look deep into our character, recognize our strengths, embrace our weaknesses, and work on improving our flaws so we can become the best version of ourselves.

17 Of BTS’s Most Inspirational Lyrics That Will Resonate With Everyone

17 Of BTS’s Most Inspirational Lyrics That Will Resonate With Everyone

There are plenty of things to love about BTS, and it’s easy enough to fall for the group’s quality music, spectacular choreographies, and lovable members. But one of the reasons BTS has become so widely popular is that people connect with their music on a deeply personal level: their songs are about following dreams, challenging norms, and staying true to yourself in the face of uncertainty. Because the members themselves overcame adversity to achieve their dreams, they have an incredible gift for penning lyrics that inspire audiences around the world to do the same. So no matter what stage of life you’re in or what your hopes and aspirations are, here are some of our favorite BTS lyrics that may inspire you:

1. “O!RUL8,2?”

“Who are you living for? My heart stopped when I was nine or ten. Put your hand on your heart and ask what your dream was, What it really was.”

inspirational essay on bts

To start, we’re throwing it way back to the intro track from BTS’s 2013 EP “O!RUL8,2?” RM’s lyrics challenge us to look inward and ask ourselves what  we want from our life. With a lyric that references a medical scare as a reminder that we should not take our time for granted, RM next advises us: “Never be late to do what you wanna do.” So if you’re late (or, rather, “L8”), let this be your wakeup call!

2. “No More Dream”

“What is the you that you dreamed of? Who do you see in the mirror? I gotta say Go on your path Even if you live for a day Do something Put away your weakness.”

inspirational essay on bts

BTS’s debut song boldly demands that we face ourselves and question ourselves about who we want to be. The lyrics ask us what our dream is, daring us to truly live by finding our own path instead of simply going through life doing what is expected or what we’re told.

“Adults tell me that hardships are only momentary To endure a little more, to do it later Everybody say NO! It can’t be any later Don’t be trapped in someone else’s dream.”

inspirational essay on bts

In “N.O,” the guys point out the injustice of an education system that puts enormous pressure on students to be the best in school, teaching them to become studying machines instead of following their dreams. BTS rouses us to question  why.  Why put off these dreams? Why not say no?

“I worked all night, every day While you were out clubbing.”

inspirational essay on bts

If you really want something, you simply have to put in the work for it. Instead of messing around with their free time, the members devoted it to crafting music and perfecting choreographies — and their efforts paid off!

5. “Moving On”

“We were always hoarse from an uncertain future and worries, Seeing all the senior artists at the end of the year awards. Let’s not forget those things, but put them away.”

inspirational essay on bts

In this sweetly sentimental song about moving out of their trainee dorm, the boys reminisce about their days as young idols. Despite being able to to put away some of the worries of their early careers, the boys resolved not to forget these more difficult times as they moved forward. After all, these struggles are what laid the groundwork for BTS’s later success — although when this song was released in 2015, the boys still had no idea of all that they would achieve!

“I believe in myself; My back hurts in order to let my wings sprout.”

In a song filled with gorgeous imagery about shedding fears and trusting in your path, this lyric is particularly inspiring. Sacrifice and effort can be heavy burdens to bear, but they are the beginnings of the budding wings that will eventually grow so you can soar to new heights!

7. “Not Today”

“If you can’t fly, then run. Today we will survive. If you can’t run, then walk. Today we will survive. If you can’t walk, then crawl.”

Until you’ve grown those wings, you may have to resort to other, less graceful methods of moving towards your goals. But BTS doesn’t care whether you’re flying, running, walking, or crawling: all that matters is that you’re not giving up. Not today!

8. “Boyz With Fun”

“I’m becoming weird. You can’t go to the peak by being normal, baby.”

Just an important reminder that part of what enabled BTS to reach new heights of success is that they let their quirky, often weird personalities shine — and we all should do the same!

“I still believe, even though it’s unbelievable: To lose your path Is the way to find that path.”

inspirational essay on bts

Life is not always straightforward, and sometimes you may feel as though you’re drifting and unsure of how to achieve your dreams, or of what those dreams even are. Let this lyric from the vocal line’s song off the “Wings” album reassure you: in time, you might find that getting lost is what enabled you to find your path in the end!

10. “Intro: The Most Beautiful Moment In Life”

“What am I doin’ with my life? This moment won’t ever come again I’m asking myself again, am I happy right now?”

inspirational essay on bts

We could all probably stand to ask ourselves these important questions from Suga’s reflective intro track more often. It’s a good reminder to not waste our time, but rather to strive to live each and every moment as the most beautiful in life. (In case you were wondering, Suga’s own response to the question is the next lyric: “The answer is already there: I’m happy.”)

11. “So What”

“In the middle of the road, in the moment you want to give up, Shout out even louder: So what?”

inspirational essay on bts

Off their newest album, “Love Yourself: Tear,” “So What” is a song about letting go of worries and fears. So what if others judge you? So what if you fail? You’re not going to give up your path for these concerns, so there’s no point in having them; the only solution is to keep moving forward.

12. “Never Mind”

“If you think you’re going to crash, step on the pedal harder. Never mind, never mind, Even if it’s a road of thorns, we still run.”

Another robust rap intro by Suga, “Never Mind” offers a powerful message about not allowing fears to hold you back. Suga tells us to never mind the possibility of failing or getting hurt: accelerate more, run through the thorns, and chase your dreams!

13. “Paradise”

“Who says a dream must be something grand? Just become anybody We deserve a life Whatever, big or small, you are you after all.”

inspirational essay on bts

With all this talk about dreams, BTS reminds us in “Paradise” that we don’t all have to strive for something as large-scale as the guys’ own aspirations. You don’t have to want to be a superstar; you simply have to be who you are and live the life that appeals to you.

14. “Tomorrow”

“Follow your dream like breaker. Even if it breaks down, Don’t ever run backwards, never. Because the dawn right before the sun rises is the darkest.”

In “Tomorrow,” BTS gets real about the frustration and despair that can go hand in hand with chasing your dreams. In spite of these difficulties, the lyrics caution us to keep our eyes on the prize, because just as dawn comes after the darkest part of night, breakthroughs often happen after the toughest of trials!

15. “Spring Day”

“The morning will come again. No darkness, no season is eternal.”

inspirational essay on bts

Continuing with the theme of nature from “Tomorrow,” the lyrics from “Spring Day” give us a gentle yet powerfully reassuring reminder that no matter how dark things are, morning always comes in the end. If we wait out the cold winter of our hardships, we will come to a spring of our own.

16. “2! 3!”

“It’s alright, now count 1, 2, 3 and forget. Erase all sad memories. Hold each other’s hands and smile.”

Whenever you’re feeling down, this calming track from the “Wings” album will instantly lift your spirits. Rather than dwell on sadness, just count to three, smile, and draw strength from the people around you.

17. “Magic Shop”

“I do believe your galaxy. I want to listen to your melody. The stars in your Milky Way, How will they appear in your sky? Don’t forget that I found you anyways. At the end of my despair. You’re the last reason. For me who was standing at the edge of the cliff. Live.”

inspirational essay on bts

Finishing off our list, “Magic Shop” is the latest BTS track in which the guys express their love and appreciation for ARMYs. It’s a touching reminder that inspiration is a two-way street: as much as BTS motivates us to discover our hopes and live to our full potential, we inspire them with our energy, our galaxies, and our melodies. It is because we believe in them that they are able to inspire us to believe in ourselves.

Creative Production Inspirations and Lessons from BTS in Kpop, Pt. 1

BTS, a seven-man K-Pop hip hop group, has been a creative inspiration to me in ways that I didn’t believe would be possible for my cynical-of-mainstream heart and mind. With their recent win of Mnet’s Asian Music Awards (MAMA)’s Artist of the Year Daesang, they have literally started from the bottom to win the most prestigious award for Korean musical acts. Thus I found myself writing about why this phenomenal group resonates with me and my creative development, and why I think it transcends borders for so may fans.

BTS is the English name based on their Korean name, Bangtan Sonyeondan, which translates to “Bulletproof Boy Scouts”. It’s quite a high-flown title and reminded me of something like “Fullmetal Alchemist” at first. As they’ve explained in a few interviews, they chose this name because their music is meant to reflect the issues that teenagers and youth in their 20s in society, and use their songs as a shield against prejudice.

And I’ve been delighted to find BTS’s name and motto remains true, in their musical production as well as their visual direction that engage with social consciousness themes for a youth age group. They have done this in an unpretentious way that allows young fans to have open conversations about difficult topics on family, mental health, inequality, sexuality, and more. As someone who has enjoyed Cinema Studies in university, some have called my cultural media interests esoteric and niche and out of touch with what’s “popular”, but BTS has shown that you can have it both ways; Their strength lies in their simultaneous presentation that is both accessible and self-reflexive, with both breadth and depth.

Throughout the rest of this winding article, I will present what ingredients in their oeuvre makes them such a creative and commercial success, and key points that I believe any commercial artists of any medium who strive to talk about social consciousness in their work can learn from.

School Stress = Societal Stress

BTS’s first single kickstarted a thematic trilogy in three albums that deftly tied school stress with societal stress. They debuted on June 13, 2013 with the song No More Dream. Writing credits for No More Dream include BTS rappers Rap Monster (Rapmon), Suga, and J-Hope. Although the song’s MV production has straight-forward dance numbers and appeal shots with a rebellious school theme, the lyrics are brimming with the youthful empowerment of what’s to become iconic of their music.

“What is the you that you’ve dreamed of? Who do you see in the mirror? I gotta say Go on your path Even if you live for a day Do something Put away your weakness”

“… Sick of the same day, the repeating days Grown-ups and my parents keep instilling confined dreams to me Number one future career is a government worker? It’s not a forced dream, a ninth inning relief pitcher Throw a fast ball at the waste of time that is night study sessions Rebel against the hellish society, Dreams are a special pardon Ask yourself about your dream profile Become the main subject of your life That has always been suppressed”

Three months later, the boys released N.O., with an MV that very obviously criticized the competitive nature of school without necessarily fermenting creative and intellectual capitals. Instead, the members are shown as puppets who literally swallow pills and are brainwashed into doing schoolwork obediently. In the lyrics, it also neatly tied in desire of material wealth with competitive education. The song’s writing credits include Rapmon and Suga.

“A good house, A good car, Will these things bring happiness? In Seoul To the SKY,* Will parents really be happy?

… Who is the one who made us into studying machines? They classify us to either Being number one or dropping out They trap us in borders, the adults There’s no choice but to consent Even if we think simply, It’s the survival of the fittest Who do you think is the one who makes us step On even our close friends to climb up? What?

Adults tell me that hardships Are only momentary To endure a little more, to do it later Everybody say NO! It can’t be any later Don’t be trapped in someone else’s dream We roll (We roll) We roll (We roll) We roll”

For reference, South Korean culture deeply exalts education as the key to modern success. I cannot think of many other nations in which there is this much emphasis placed on secondary and post-secondary education, insofar that it is expected of secondary students to spend much longer hours than in Western societies in regular school classes, followed by cram school and night classes, for the sake of landing a stable desk job. However, it creates competitiveness that feels much more like a rat race, and where success is not guaranteed unless you are number 1. BTS’s bold debut singles criticize this system, where creative problem solving, innovation and learning are secondary to winning at all costs.

If you know about the work that I do, I write stories related to systems of authority that entrenches power, and I often examine youth and how they negotiate with a society that they are coming to terms with, but often dispossesses them as it’s not created to benefit them . Students are often at the forefront of movements because they have the most to gain in supplanting outdated visions of society, even though history underrepresents their stake, expression and decision-making.

BTS, in their cinematic and lyrical storytelling, have created an affective allegory for the fractures of power between students and society. Their early works are literal, straight-shooting and keenly aware of the hearts of many students, Korea and beyond. N.O’s MV’s representation of the teacher on the same side as the police paints a stark picture of sociopolitical forces that have no obligation to protect students, who are powerless except when it comes to their voices and their dreams.

Despite (or because of?) their rebel image, BTS models for Smart, a school uniform company

From humble beginnings

The first time I really took note of BTS was shortly after their debut in June 2013. I had seen their debut MVs and thought their rapping sounds a lot better than most mainstream Kpop, but there was that “first moment” where I thought this was a group with heart.

It was part of their media play at the time that three members of BTS come from underground hip hop roots, and there was nothing like it in any of the rest of the Kpop stars and debuts at the time. The leader, Rap Monster (Rapmon), and Suga, were underground rappers in their respective hometowns, and lead dancer J-Hope was part of a street dance crew. In Aug 2013, Rapmon and Suga were interviewed by Korean underground Hip Hop artists at a local cafe, and the reception was downright frosty. The underground seniors denigrated Rapmon and Suga of selling out, subjected them to homophobia (of looking “effeminate” and “gay”), of not being real to hip hop, of not having endurance, because they became part of the Korean idol industry instead.

The Kpop idol industry as a whole has been criticized as “manufactured”, as agencies scout talented teens and put them in groups where they train for years in performance skills, with dance, vocal talent, and interviewing as a requirement, and foreign languages, acting, modelling, MCing, composing, and other performance arts skills as strong recommendations. It can take years before trainees debut, if they ever do, and many trainees end up leaving the trainee life because it requires a lot of hard work, economic struggle and interpersonal sacrifice. It is also a highly stratified industry where big name agencies not only have the largest marketing reach with large production values, but also ensure that their idols get the best broadcasting exposure. Depending on the company, some idols may not have any say in their music’s visual and lyrical concept. And in 2013, there were only a handful of Kpop household names that produced hip hop. Thus, to those jaded underground hip hop seniors, this isn’t “real, talented work”.

What the underground hip hop nay-sayers don’t understand is that something that works within the existing commercial paradigm can also be revolutionary and artistic. They feel threatened by their own singular identification with machismo and explosive individualism, their stronghold on this certain style of hip hop that avoids fan service, homoerotica, and male beauty like the plague. What they forgot is that hip hop is a medium to tell stories, not just of one monolithic type, but to reflect upon society.

But what got me was Rapmon’s and Suga’s respectful and thoughtful responses to the underground seniors. They said that they see their point of view and understand hip hop culture, but that it doesn’t mean their current music path is not meaningful. They are polite but firm that they sought something different than their rapper hyungs, and their measured responses really showed a brotherhood. It made the underground seniors look jealous, homophobic, and outdated in their hold on culture; That the true split isn’t about art but about having financial stability. Suga even said that he hated the reality of starving and only performing to two people at his stages in the underground, and that admission of difficulty isn’t a weakness. As individual artists, they pivoted, they found and developed their audience, and they are humble about their opinions and thankful towards new artistic opportunities. They treat each opportunity as potential for further collaborative growth . This is something that any artist can learn from.

Of course, Rapmon and Suga responded to the feud in their iconic mixtapes, true hip hop style:

In 2015, Big Hit Entertainment, BTS’s agency, became the second highest selling agency in terms of number of album sales. This is noteworthy because Kpop has been monopolized by the Big 3 for nearly a decade. They are SM Ent, YG, and JYP, three agencies who take the vast majority of all music awards, sponsorships, sales, broadcasting rights, and has huge fan-bases internationally that form loyalty not only to the idols but to the agencies themselves. But here’s the kicker: Big Hit Entertainment started out as a small company, and has only BTS and the ballad duo Homme on its roster, whereas the Big 3 has many other groups. And they look fit to repeat the paradigm-breaking sales again this year.

Big Hit’s CEO, Bang Shi Hyuk, received three awards this year for Best Executive Producer and Composer. In one of his interviews, he said that he promised to help them become an established team if the members “not only compose and write lyrics but also independently participate in producing and stage management. They are steadily fulfilling this”. Bang Shi Hyuk also encouraged BTS members to tell their own stories through music, and thus there has been a creative flowering of personal songs, ranging from Rapmon rapping about his anxiety about his place in hip hop, Suga’s struggles with depression and wealth as a marker of success, to vocalist V’s guilt over his own expressive personality, and songs about the homes that all of the members left behind.*

And it makes so much sense. The best executive producer is the one that finds opportunities for the company’s talents to grow for years and years to come, and it’s only going to enrich the industry and future networks for generations to come. The underground seniors, by comparison, squandered opportunity and didn’t encourage two of their own to grow in their arts.

Just for fun, here’s a video of BTS members roasting their CEO and staff (and each other) during their debut summer:

* Due to the rigours of idol training, broadcast and production schedules, all young Kpop groups stay in a dorm together, and only get to see their family a few times a year within a promotional or trainee year. The youngest member, Jungkook, was 13 when he first began as a trainee.

The Aesthetics of Complex Storytelling

Kpop wouldn’t be the phenomenon that it is without its visual appeal that crosses linguistic boundaries. Beautiful, model-like aesthetic and sleekly synchronized dances are the expected arsenal of any Kpop group, and each group aims to have high production value in their MVs, concepts, and live stage performances. But there is something that sets BTS apart in this aesthetics competition, and it’s their relentlessly intricate and sensible visual and lyrical storytelling.

It wasn’t until 2015 that BTS reached their breakthrough year to truly rival the popularity of groups from the Big 3. By the end of 2014, BTS already gained recognition for their strong dance numbers, their rebellious visuals, their hip hop lyrical finesse, and their straight-shooting social consciousness lyrics. The advent of a new album trilogy highlighted a new maturity in 2015. It’s entitled “The Most Beautiful Moment In Life” (in Korean: Hwayang Yeonhwa, henceforth HYYH), and it changed their fates.

HYYH tackled a subject that the vast majority of youth experience, but few pop musicians articulate well: Mental health and the desire to belong in society.

The first single of HYYH Pt. 1, I Need U, was a departure both in terms of musical style and its visual aesthetics. Instead of a complicated, dynamic dance number, the 5.5-minute MV wove an intricate story starring all seven members. Scenes of happiness together as a group contrast with scenes of social isolation and disorder. The intermingling of the scenes was aptly edited to the swells of music, suggesting that each member is reliant on the wellbeing of the others. Gradually, psychological violence and mental suffering tear the group apart, cumulating in scenes of hurt, death and suicide of all seven characters. It was the very image of youth who burned too strongly at the fringes, and burned out without proper societal support. The lyrics warble: “It goes round & round, why do I keep coming back/ I go down & down, at this point, I’m just a fool.”

Taken in isolation, I Need U could have functioned as a beautifully executed but melodramatic fare. However, it became the first of a series of films in which I Need U functioned as the dramatic climax to a vignette of seven lost boys and their lives, and thus the rest of the films and media tell a story out of order. Less than four months after the release of I Need U, BTS released a 12-minute film entitled Prologue. The creative direction with non-linearity, temporal lingering over character expression and set pieces, and self-reflexive cinematic techniques speaks the language of arthouse films. It lends the series a sense of self-awareness and depth that I have not seen the like of in K-pop (apart from indie and solo Korean artists).

By watching Prologue, viewers question if the catalyst for psychological breakdown was due to domestic violence, or if everything that happened in HYYH was a dream brought on through loss of identity and depression. In any case, these “lost boys” have no outside authority figure that they respect, but they survive by supporting each other through their latticed friendship. And because HYYH respects that the topic of mental health is difficult to articulate, the films takes a poetic, experimental and handcrafted feel.

The non-linearity, indirect articulations and memory-like fragments (using film-within-a-film techniques) echo the uncertainty of figuring out one’s identity despite mental anguish. Instead, viewers work through allegory and the gesture, presence and motion or its lack in the characters, and how different sounds and light conjure unique emotional feedback. For example, the oldest vocalist Jin is frequently seen with a camera or camcorder. His footage mingles with that of the broader cinematographic frame, creating a messy feedback loop of multiple organic perspectives, memories, and realities, insofar that we don’t know who is the reliable narrator anymore. The self-awareness that HYYH has of its difficult subject matter shines through in how the camera relays the scenes with simultaneously measured and apprehensive configuration – natural sunlit scenes interspersed with scratchy film footage, flat environments and wide angles interrupted by tall structures – and it all contributes to a non-exploitative exploration of mental health.

“I don’t know if this is reality or a dream My Kafka on the seaside Don’t go to those woods over there My heart is still shattering on you”

In November, six months since I Need U, the album HYYH Pt. 2 released with its new single, Run. This MV pushed non-linearity and allegorical storytelling to a fever pitch, creating montages that seem surreal, dream-within-a-dream, and like reels of memory unbound. Two key characters break the fourth wall, creating troubled pauses that seek psychological resolution. The pacing in this MV is more upbeat, filled with youthful mischief and delinquency, but with an underlying tension of social dissatisfaction. The youngest vocalist, Jungkook, says , “If I Need U had happiness in sadness, [Run] is about sadness within happiness.” Produced by the largest number of members thus far – Jungkook, V, Rapmon, J-Hope, and Suga – Run’s lyrics suggest the complexity and necessity of loving someone with psychological suffering (including oneself):

“Memories are crumbling like Dried flower leaves On my fingertips and under my feet And behind my back Like chasing butterfly or wondering in dreams I follow your traces Please guide me please stop me Please let me breathe

Let’s run run run again! I can’t stop running Let’s run run run again! I can’t help running Only thing I can do is run Only thing I can do is love you”

The HYYH-themed stories were also spread out over different sources, creating a transmedia that encouraged fans to ask questions and seek out the next source of Big Hit releases. Physical albums had photos that gave hints to the characters’ fate, while interviews, live performances and behind-the-scenes shared more context for the storyline. Even the choreography gave suggestions about the characters’ inter-relations. Additional MVs such as Dope and Fire answer the premise set out in HYYH as alternate realities, satires, and imaginations. For example, in Dope, the boys are in the costume of the careers that they idealized in contrast to their I Need U realities; V dresses as a private investigator who could put a stop to his character’s domestic violence traumas, while Jungkook dresses as a cop in contrast to his character’s unpremeditated street beating.

The live dance performance of Run also pairs Suga and Jungkook closely together, emblematic of their relationship in HYYH.

The live dance performance of Run also pairs Suga and Jungkook closely together, emblematic of their relationship in HYYH.

And all the while, it fostered an open environment where fans shared their personal experiences and challenges with mental health. There are countless comments about how BTS’s music brought them from the dark. BTS has done something important: It’s music and art that listen to and acknowledge the concerns of its own generation.

Just when we thought that BTS concluded its HYYH epic, BTS launched a series of seven mini-films in Sept 2016, one for each member’s solo in promotion of a new album called Wings. The seven mini-films are designed on minimalist sound-stage that once again breaks the fourth wall with shifting sets and spatiotemporal abstractions. It expands upon the old relationships and psychological conflicts in HYYH of when the friends were present and absent from influencing each other at key pivotal moments. And the promotions clearly engaged an audience who sought layered, experimental cinematography with great music: Wings’ album sales broke U.S. Billboard records for best-selling K-pop album.

The single, Blood, Sweat and Tears (BST), is the start of the new era of the Wings album. BST examines the psychology of shame and temptation, of a reality where there is not only godliness, but also demonization and sin. In a country where Christians account of 29.2% of the population, BTS has begun to engage its young audience with questions of embodied shame and sexual identity politics with overtly Roman Catholic and Neoclassical aesthetics and symbolism. Dozens of fine art pieces, including Herbert Draper’s Lament for Icarus, a statue of Laocoön, Bruegel’s Fall of the Rebel Angels, and Ceiling frescoes of the Cathedral of St. Nicholas tease at deeper metaphors in the storyline. Where V was the first to fall in HYYH, he became the fallen tempter in BST. Where Jin was the lens through which the viewers understood the boys in HYYH, he became the Dante looking into the inferno in BST.

The beauty of BTS’s success from the HYYH era onwards is that their aesthetic and music allow both surface enjoyment and deeply cultural examinations . And that kind of design is very difficult to do, as visual directors and producers must be aware of countless aesthetic details and how they may be perceived across cultural climes, but simultaneously make it an accessible spectacle that engages the senses. For something like transmedia, that coordination complexity intensifies because there’s even more moving parts. But the payoff for BTS has been incredible: It makes both new discoveries and continual engagement with their audiovisual performativity an absolute joy to behold.

Stay tuned for Pt. 2! It’ll come out faster with the more encouragement I receive. ^^

This is the article I was waiting for, this is the analysis I needed to read. Thank you for knowing the precise story before telling it, and for being so thorough in your analysis.

Tanya Kan

Thank you so much Radia! That’s really kind of you to say. I look forward to writing more about BTS – the second part is a bit delayed because I’ve just been taking business classes, and I feel excited that I can incorporate new perspectives into how I describe BTS’s successes! I still need some time to digest the new things that I’ve been learning though, haha!

This is beautiful. You showed me again why I like BTS so much. I’m looking forward to part 2

Thank you so much for reading the article! I look forward to adding more in the future. So much has happened since Love Yourself “Her”‘s release!

Thanks a lot! I’m doing in research in those guys for a project in Psychology. Thanks.

Thank you Alexandre for reading the article! Good luck on your Psychology paper – if you ever release it publicly, I’d love to read it and learn from your insights!

As I have gotten more into BTS, I have found it hard to put into words how much they mean to me and others. This article has proven to be one of the best writings of BTS I’ve found. You talked about their lyrics and the meanings of the music videos that most other authors glaze over. Thanks for the time you put into this and I can’t wait for pt 2!!

Wow, thanks so much, that means a lot! I feel like their perseverance and artistry has inspired me so much, as do the creative energies of the rest of the team at Big Hit Ent. One of the translation sites that I feel like opened my eyes to BTS’s lyricism and storytelling is Muish’s Ramblings ( https://muish.wordpress.com/bts-directory-of-ramblings/ ). And I really like how positive the fandom can be to support each other on self-care, mental health, self-expression, and even studying (especially after Pied Piper!). I also very much look forward to writing pt 2, especially with the new Love Yourself campaign and UNICEF partnership! Still trying to find ways to encapsulate that as well.

WOW ! Loved your article, you encaptured exactly why I couldn’t stop falling in love with them and why I still fall in love with them every single day, the more I learn and read about them. I hope in your next part, you will talk about Spring Day, I think it is by far my favorite BTS MV. Let’s not forget that BTS also puts references to great books in their music videos and albums (that I still haven’t read but definitely will ^^) But maybe you should wait for Hixtape to drop before doing the second part, because I think we will have so much to talk about with it ! Anyway, loved your article, can’t wait to read more :)

Thanks so much for your positive comment, and for being excited for the second part of this article! Spring Day is also one of my favorite BTS MVs, it’s so deeply thought out! I’m also excited about Hixtape and I also anticipate the follow-up to Love Yourself: Her, which I am guessing would expand upon the HYYH story. I can’t believe how much they’ve achieved since I wrote this article, there’s going to be so much for my writing to cover!

Hello. I hope you incorporate the HYYH notes in LY:Her in your future part II blog. Your blog was very insightful and informative. Thanks for sharing ^^ And I have a feeling this story might not be resolved for the next two years.

Thank you so much for your positive comment & thoughts! I very much agree, it’s definitely a HYYH ~ Forever! I’ve been loving how they’re expanding the universe with so many elements, including the LY:Her as you mentioned, not just through digital video alone. It’s really a master class in creativity. I can’t wait to write more about it!

I honestly just stumbled into your blog and its beautiful. Im pretty new into BTS since my sisters finally got me hooked and I needed a new aesthetic reference. To be honest, I thought that songs were good enough to catapault them to the top (I dont understand korean so I just believed they were well written) but when my social media started exploding with ‘theories’ I figured there was more to it. To my shock their videos was so new to me. The aesthetics and whatever continuity I could pick up was breathtaking. Your article explains a lot more and now Im excited to back track on these textures I missed out.

Thank you, this article was so informative without being discriminating to a new fan such as myself.

Thank you so much, your kind comment really brightened my day! I love how accessible BTS had made their music, but also made it incredibly immersive with so many layers of detail, and textures as you say! They also deeply inspire with how they also don’t discriminate against fans of any sort. I look forward to writing more about them! Thank you for your encouragement!

I too just stumbled onto this story. I find it all fascinating. I’m curious if you ever wrote a part 2. I would love to read it.

Thank you so much for reading this blog post, I’m humbled that you find this older piece of writing still relevant and interesting! There is honestly no better time to write about BTS and their growth in the past two years, and their sincerity in their art and message when it comes to #LoveYourself. I just hope to find the free time to do so soon!

Come to think of it, I don’t think I’ve uploaded my BTS fanart onto this website yet, haha!

I’m new to BTS and have been slowly going through all their content. Your article is so well written and especially helped me understand the HYYH era, which I mainly glossed over because I didn’t understand it, though I liked the songs Dope and Fire. Afrer reading your analysis, I’m now interested in looking at the HYYH era content with this new appreciation for the underlying meaning behind it all. It’s been a few years since you wrote this article but it would still be great to read part 2. Your analysis is really helpful and insightful. I haven’t read anything like it so far, thank you for your writing!

Thanks so much for enjoying the article, your comment means so much to me! I would love to go into more detail with HYYH and also how BTS is extremely reflexive with their artistry, especially with the Map of the Soul: 7 + Agust D-2 era. I personally hope and believe that they’re going to continue to build on the HYYH era content, with the announcement trailer of NetMarble’s unnamed new BTS game! I will hope to take some time this summer to write a new update and part 2. Thank you so much for reading and commenting!
